Others say...
"Great Teaching Tool" I thoroughly enjoy this chess application. I am not a great chess player but the teaching tools contained in Chessmaster are excellent and I can see steady advancement in understanding the game.
I have had none of the problems mentioned in other reviews when running this program on my laptop.
"Very poor software" I bought this program with my eyes open and had read many of the reviews about bugs and computer problems. I have not hit any bugs so far, but the main problem is that this program places huge computing demands on a computer. I have 1 gig of memory and a 4 ghz processor. This is thin by today's standards but this computer can run a dozen large applications at once without batting an eye. Chessmaster hangs up the computer and uses up all available memory and computing power. The result is that the computer moves at a painfully slow pace. The only way to play is to hit "force move" which is not even available in rated play mode. Even with imaginary players rated at 1500, the computer pretty much makes random moves unless you give it 30 minutes to think about each move.
You should not need a brand new computer in order to run something as basic as a chess program unless you're Gary Kasparov or something. I have a much better program on my cellphone, which obviously does not compare in terms of memory and processing power.
Other problems are that despite the huge number of available boards, none of them look good and the layout is difficult to read and a strain to the eye. The game analysis function is not very helpful--it will tell you that the worst move you made is when you stepped into an unavoidable mate. Obviously, games are not lost at that point.
This program does have a lot of bells and whistles and if you have at least 2 gigs of memory and a very powerful processor, you might want to coinsider this program as a beginner.
"Lemon. Don't buy this game" This game has a very annoying bug, confirmed by several different people. If you play a rated game, the game won't rate you properly (you can lose points even if you win the rated game), which makes it useless to play rated games. Rated games are, in my opinion, the most fun part of playing chess on the computer, thus making this game useless. I downloaded all patches available but no luck. I contacted Ubisoft support and it is really pathetic and disrespectful. In the end they took my 20 dollars and I have a lemon in my hands. I think I will complain to a consumer advocate group. Don't buy this game, it has a defect and the company refuses even to discuss it.
"Excellent Chess Education for Beginners" When I bought this game, I already knew how to place chess as far as the rules were concerned but had no clue when it came to strategy and therfore wasn't very good. This game has taught me a lot about chess and has helped me to enjoy the game a lot more. It has lessons to teach you everything from how the pieces move to basic chess strategy, opening tips, an endgame course, and more. It also has a lot of computer opponets to play against that all have different ratings (some are easy and some are hard).
I rushed through the chess lessons and improved my game a lot. Now I'm going to practice my newfound knowledge, and then I plan to go through the lessons much slower so that I can master each principle. Most importantly, understanding some basic chess strategy has enabled me to love this game more. Playing chess isn't a total mystery like it used to be.
There is also a lot of recorded famous chess games, which you can watch and study. Some of them even give comments explaining why certain moves were made. After I go through the lessons again I plan to watch these famous games and learn more from them. Really no matter how little or how much you know about chess, I think you can always learn more with this program by watching the games of master chess players. Another cool feature is that it contains a database filled with thousands of known openings. If I don't do well in an opening, then I got to this database and study what I should have done differently.
Another educational tool it has is that you can set the board up with any position and then play from that position. I use this tool by putting a position which I previously didn't know what to do in. Then I play against the Chessmaster (the expert computer chess player) putting the Chessmaster in my shoes to see how he responds in it. This has helped me a lot.
You can also play against other people online or using a LAN.
As far as chess education is concerned, I can't think of any way that they could improve on it. The only way I can see room for improvement is in the chess sets, boards, and wallpapers available. There are several beautiful chess sets available (mostly from the House of Staunton Chess Sets), but there are also a lot of chess sets that are not visually appealing at all. Some of these chess sets are colored similar to the chessboard and it makes it difficult (for me anyway) to quickly see exactly what pieces are where because it all kinda blends together. Although there are different chess boards available, they all match a paticular chess set. I wish there was a way to mix and match different chess sets with different chess boards. There might be a way to do it that I just haven't found yet. I would also like to see a way for you to modify chess sets. For example, take a chess set you like and keep the style but change the color to Red or Blue or Yellow. I think that would be really cool. They do have both 2D and 3D chess sets, as well as a few animated chess sets.
I hope this review helps you make an informed decision when you decide if you want to purchase this product, I know I'm glad I did.
"Can You Improve On A 10" Not. After uninstalling Chessmaster 10 and installing Chessmaster-Grandmaster on a computer with a quad core chip, 2 gigs of ram with a 3D video acclerated 512 meg video card what a disapointment. This new version is harder to navigate, has less features and does not produce like CM 10 did. A bust conceived to make money. The new and improved. What a croc of sh.... There is nothing new and it is certainly not improved. I uninstalled Grandmaster and reinstalled Chessmaster 10. It is the best computer chess game for learning since Chessmaster 5 which I wish was still available. The Saint

What our customer's say!
"ChessMaster Challenge", ChessMaster Challenge is easy to use, easy to learn, and entertaining. It allows you to set up your settings to your taste and style. It allows you to choose any level you want (novice to grandmaster) to challenge it. It is highly recommended for anybody in the Chess world.
"An incredible amount of Chess fun and learning for under $20", The reviewer right below has stated it very well, so I won't bore anyone with too many details. This version of Chessmaster contains a true library of things to learn from various Masters of the game and is targeted at the Novice & Intermediate. The tutorials are done in a way that you don't have to be a strong Chess player to follow along. The puzzles, drills and game analysis are excellent ways to better understand the strategy & tactics behind winning Chess. My young daughter is finally wanting to learn Chess and I really appreciate how many areas of Chessmaster have been modified to apeal to children, while still not changing the other areas for us adult learners of this great game!
It's really amazing just how much quality content you get for under $20. If you like or love Chess or if you are just interested in learning how to play the game better, I'll bet you will have hours upon hours of fun with this program.
"The Art of Learning", I've only played one game against this computer software; computer opponents don't really interest me. Of course it's capable of beating most players, but it also has some colorful "personalities" to choose from: who have inherent weaknesses so you can win sometimes. I am giving the full five stars due entirely to the tutorials by Josh Waitzkin that are included. These are worth much more than the cost of the software. Josh explains all the basic tactics, etc., and then takes you through some grand-master games explaining the subtleties and allowing you to try your hand ocassionaly. With audio accompanying the animated chessboard, some deep concepts are learned painlessly. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of material covered; I expected a brief introduction: instead it is a full course (and I haven't even looked at his end-game course yet). I learned more (and enjoyed it more) than I have from many chess books costing far more.
"Great value", I've elected to start to play chess, and, since everyone here in Central Europe seems to have begun playing before they left the cradle, I needed something that could take me from the very basics to more advanced techniques. While I find it astounding that something as tried and true as chess doesn't have more free, online tutorials available, I have to say that the Chessmaster Grandmaster software has been thoroughly useful. There are actually three "academy" programs, all of which begin at the most basic level (i.e. this is the board, these are the pieces, the king is usually recognized by being the tallest piece, pawns move like this) and proceed to more advanced levels. The software also has extensive tutorials on learning to "see the whole board", something I was delighted to see and training I very much needed. After each tutorial, there's a useful quiz covering the info, which also builds on info from previous tutorials. Once you've gotten a few tutorials under your belt, the game then shifts to actual play, where you challenge computer generated players of gradually increasing rank. While playing, there are several tools made available to you, including clear indications of moves available to you (and your opponent) and a "blunder alert" setting that warns you of potentially foolish mistakes and suggests alternatives (the PC acting out the moves of consequence in both cases in addition to providing them in algebraic notation). All said, I'm immensely pleased with this purchase, and am already proving a challenge to some of my more experienced opponents here.
As the software has about ½ of its design as primarily educational, and is geared more to adults, its "fun factor" is a bit low, hence the moderate fun rating given. Regardless, it's a great way to learn the game, and teens to adults who wish to learn will find it immensely useful in their endeavours.
"I like it. Works on Windows Vista 64-bit", Bought this in August 2008. Works fine on Windows Vista 64-bit. I've taken up an interest in chess lately. Aside from knowing both how the pieces move and that everyone on Yahoo Games can beat me, I didn't have any clue how to play the game. Slowly but surely this is changing. The lessons are extraordinarily helpful and they do not throw too many concepts at me at once. I sure can't speak for advanced players, but for beginners, this software is wonderful. For $20 (and less for used), it is an excellent buy.

"Superb for its intended use", A lot of people criticize Chessmaster for what it isn't. It isn't the strongest chess engine. Correct. That honor currently belongs to Rybka. It's database functions aren't industrial strength. Correct again. ChessBase and Chess Assistant beat it easily in this category. Chessmaster, however claims to have a very strong engine (absolutely true), perhaps the most convenient and capable way out there of playing against the engine at less than full strength (rated personalities), and excellent instructional material. It delivers on all of these and more at a very reasonable price.
Also, some say that there isn't much change from upgrade to upgrade. I don't have version 10, but I had used 9000 for quite awhile. It didn't work well on a newer computer, so I purchased the Grandmaster edition. Not only have I had no problems with the program, but I was also pleasantly surprised by the (IMHO) much cleaner interface and excellent chess sets. From 9000, at least, I found it a real step up.
I have the big database programs, and they are great for what they are. But for what Chessmaster is (at a fraction of the cost) it's pretty hard to beat.
"It's worth $20", I've owned Chessmaster 10 since it first came out, but was hesitant to buy the Grandmaster Edition based on some of the reviews. True, it is very similar to its predecessor, but for me was worth Amazon's $19.95. Finally, no cd is required (I know, you could download no-cd patches for earlier versions, but this made upgrading especially troublesome). This to me was almost reason enough to buy it. Second you can customize the interface with various skins, and add your own avatar, which I really appreciate. Third, the chess engine seems a little better. Even though I usually play the mid 1500-level players, their gameplay seems improved. For me, however, the best new feature is Josh Waitzkin's "The Art of Learning" module." Hearing his blow-by-blow description of his match with Jeff Sarwer is amazing.
I'm running this under Window's Vista Ultimate, and have had no problems whatsoever. Once again, for me this upgrade *IS* worth $19.95, though I probably wouldn't have paid $49.95 for it.
"Great way to start playing chess", This is my family's favorite computer game now. I find the tutorial and games with audio commentary fascinating...almost like watching a good movie. My kids (6 & 10) enjoyed the tutorials, and they love to play against the computer simulated players (with name and personality). At this price, it's a great bargain. It's a great way to start to learn to play chess, and the kids are getting pretty good.
"Excellent Chess Tutorial & Game", This is the best version so far. It's particularly good for those who are new to the game or who want to learn new strategies. It includes both the classic tutorials which are comprehensive, as well as the new "art of learning" tutorials narrated by chess expert Josh Waitzkin. The tutorials overlap but that is a good thing since it reinforces all the knowledge. Anyone interested in learning chess can't go wrong this this program, especially for the discounted price it's selling at these days.
"THIS PROGRAM IS AWESOME", I started playing Chess in 2000 and at the time thought I was ok. I was playing online. After getting beat up I purchased Chessmaster 6000 (maybe 8000) and used the Academy to get better. And now we are at the Grandmaster addition.
I have both Fritz and Chessmaster. I use Fritz for my serious study and game analysis. I bought Chessmaster for my kids. I already have Chessmaster 10th Edition on my home pc but lost the disk so I bought Grandmaster Edition for my laptop.
Many improvements in the Grandmaster addition. Over 20 3d Chessboards that are awesome. They added a bunch of House of Staunton chess sets that are 3d and very realistic looking. Four animated kids sets that are insane. I was even playing with them. The Josh Waitzkin academy is phenominal. I love sitting back and just watching him explain his annotated games.
So if you want a great program to analyze and study game and be able to store millions of games in a database buy Fritz. Read D. Lester's review. I completely agree with him.
If you want a kids game with insane graphics, an awesome chess course, mini chess games, chess coach, teaching while they play, and much more Chessmaster is the best. Period!
