Others say...
"Just a way to charge for doing nothing" I am in the same boat as others. MS stopped online access for the older product. I do not think this was made know when I got my copy of 2004. I do not see that they have improved anything for the money they want for the newer version. I had something similar with Quick Books. The last update release for the version I had, made it stop working with IE 7. When removed and reinstalled it worked with IE 7, then I downloaded the updates and it quit working again. So for a 2nd time I wiped it out and reloaded from the CDs. This time I did not download the updates and it continued to use it for another 18 months. MS is using the same sort of tactic here. I'd like to know how much new code there is in the 2008 release. It is time for a good open source version of this software. Where developers have no incentive to create obselence without a meaningful improvement. This really annoys me. Maybe MS is trying to soak us to find the money to pay all those EU fines. They used to give MS Money away when you bought Tax-Cut. I guess not anymore.
"Product activation problems" I was a pretty happy Money 2004 user and decided to upgrade to Money Plus Deluxe for my new Vista Ultimate (32-bit) PC and have had trouble since. I have had to contact customer service via e-mail twice regarding product activation issues. Phone support has banker's hours and is also toll call, so I avoided this option.
The first issue occurred when I tried to enter the product activation key. There are a number of boxes where you enter the code. The problem was that I could not enter the last digit in each box. The solution was to enter the activation key in Notepad, including the dashes, then copy and paste it into the first box in Money. Come on Microsoft, there is no excuse for this, it is running on your operating system and entering text in a box is very basic stuff. (yes, I did update to Money SP1 and it still wouldn't work)
The second issue also had to do with product activation. The EULA states that you can install Money on two separate computers, or two times on the same computer. I finally got it installed and activated on my laptop, but when I attempted to install this on my desktop PC, I got the following error: "this key has already been installed on the maximum number of computers". Microsoft support wants me to supply my Hardware Fingerprint code to them, and they said they will generate a new key. I am still in the process of this, but I am assuming they will allow me to activate this. Even so, this has been a major hassle. I just want it to work, there has to be a better way.
So now I need to contact Microsoft every time I upgrade hardware or buy a new PC so that I can access my financial information? I don't appreciate being treated like a criminal after paying them. I will be looking for a replacement to this. I am done with Money.
"Please bring back 2004 " I used the 2004 version until I could no longer download staements from my bank, and I never had a second of trouble. After my forced upgrade, I've had nothing but problems. I've spent days online with support and even more time implementing the fixes they wanted done. This has been going on for 6 months. In that time I have been unable to download statements correctly or balance any accounts. With the fixes Microsoft is asking of me becoming ever more complex and causing system wide problems, I have no option but to dump the software and start all over again. Meaning I will lose 5 years of data. I am buying Quicken but based on reveiws have very low expectations. Microsoft, if it ain't broke PLEASE don't fix it!
"Upgrading to this was a big mistake" I've been using Microsoft Money for about 10 years, and have been happy with it for the most part. I was using the 2004 version, but I thought budgeting features could be better, so I thought I would try Money Plus. As the title of this review states, Big Mistake! A much documented (note to self - read complaints in user forums before buying any software!) but unresolved issue is that the program takes about 10 minutes just to start if you happen to have the Spending Tracker on the Money home page (in Vista at least). The Spending Tracker module in the Budget section behaves the same way. It is one of the features I thought would make budgeting better than 2004, so I was fuming when I found out I can't even use it. Then I went to the Bills list and realized that I can't select more than one bill at a time to see what my bank balance would be after paying the selected bills. This might not be an issue if you haven't been using Money for 10 years, but I have become very dependent on this feature! So, I'm going back to 2004, and might consider Quicken. Buyer beware!
"It works" This product is the same as the 2004 version I had been using. I upgraded primarily to allow my wife to bea able to check the accounts on line and to have them automatically update, or at least easier than what we were doing. This part of the program has worked without problem. However, I downgraded my ranking because of the interface for the product. The 2004 version was a little "clunky" comparatively, but at least all of the tools were right there for you to use. However, MSMoney's attempt at being intuitive did not work for me. First, it failed to merge my accounts from the 2004 version. Second, I had to set up all of my accounts again. Lastly, I had to go in and figure out how to allow for automatic entries. I chose MS Money because I thought that it would be something that I was familiar with, however with all of the tweaks over the last 4 years they have made it difficult for the person wishing to upgrade. Would I purchase this again? Yes, because now that I have it set up, it works beautifully. We are happy that we don't have to go to the websites to manually download our information. I am still getting used to the differences but our primary reason for the upgrade was the automatic merging of banking data into our local register. If you were happy doing this manually (by going to the bank website) then I would say keep what you have until it is no longer supported.
Enjoy!

What our customer's say!
"Newer versions move closer to quick expiration and online-only features", I used Quicken for about 10 years. I switched to MS Money in 2004. I loved Money 2004 compared to older Quicken. I decided to upgrade to Money Plus so I could keep online updates working. Bottom line - both Quicken and Money get the job done - with a lot of frustration and questionable business practices. I would say that I don't have a choice - but I guess I do - I just prefer the advanced feature set more than I hate their corporate shenanigans, for now.
Key notes on this new version: - Yes, it seems to take forever to complete an update. It isn't doing anything either - no CPU usage, no network traffic, nada. This is lame. I use a personal firewall, and I used to be able to block Money 2004 from connecting for software updates to money (and thus expiration notes, ads, etc). With Money Plus, it seems to have consolidated the updates and quotes features, so I either get everything or nothing. It actually tries to do updates randomly while you're running the program. You'll notice that on the Update Now screen, you no longer have the "Download Money Updates" checkbox. Note that the "online update" takes up to 30 minutes even with my personal firewall disabled. - The Help/Manual is now "online-only" and isn't searchable. That really irks me, even though I know it is probably not going to help me anyway.
Other than that, I generally like the interface and reports.
As with a lot of other people, I wish MS would just charge a yearly subscription fee instead of forcing upgrades. The older versions have everything, and I'd pay the upgrade price to keep using a functioning old copy and they could have their endless revenue stream.
"Money One", Money One for 2008 is a good program to purchase. It is easy to down load. I had no problems with any of the down load processing. The program works great.it is a great tool developed by Microsoft to monitor and help you control your expenses. I would suggest everyone purchase a copy of this program.
"Works pretty much like Money 2007 except WPA", I have been using Microsoft Money for over 10 years and have been pretty satisfied with it. I only upgraded because I was almost out of online banking time with Money 2007. After reading some of the Quicken reviews I am glad I still have Money in spite of some drawbacks.
With every new edition of Money the file size has been getting larger and larger. It used to fit a backup on a floppy disk. No more.
Some of the problems people complain about in the reviews can be solved by changing the settings. One example is of the names on downloaded transactions remaining how you put them.
I do not like the WPA feature, though. I am going to need to do a factory restore of Vista and will need to contact the Money people in order to get a new install code because you are limited to 2 installs and I put it on my laptop too.
With Windows needing restores about 12-18 months I will be in contact with Money support lots more than I would like.
"Money Plus Deluxe - Good but needs a serious upgrade", I use both Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe and Quicken 2008 Premier. While Microsoft Money has an easier to use interface, it lacks a considerable number of items found in Quicken that I wish they would incorporate. First, by right-clicking on a payee in Quicken, you can get a full report of transactions to that payee, while in Money you are given a very limited report. Also I entered depreciation for my car and Quicken correctly did not add that to my Income & Expenses Report, while Money did. I also notice that Quicken has more tools, like a loan calculator, that Money does not have (Money did have in earlier versions, but it appears it was removed). You can enter home inventory in both programs, but in Money the only way I found you could access it is by finding how to modify your home page to include home inventory, while in Quicken home inventory is simply under a pull-down menu. I'm not clear why Microsoft seems to hide this feature. If your financial needs are simple, then the interface of Microsoft Money is probably the best thing to get. However, for more complicated financial situations, I found Quicken to be much more encompassing. Microsoft needs to do a serious upgrade to Money and it can start by simply looking at its main competitor.
"Bugs Galore", Money Plus Deluxe 2008 has given me 6 hours of time to get to know the tech support in Chihuaha, Mexico. After two long sessions the tech guy finally gave up and gave me the number to the refund department. He said there are many known problems, and the Service Pack 1 has not fixed them. Don't waste your money or time with this product.

"Not that good", I upgraded from Money Deluxe 2004 to Money Plus Deluxe 2008 version and find that it is not as good as the 2004 version for just banking needs. My 2004 version would always update when I started the program, this version I always have to update manually and then sometimes it goes through the motions of updating but doesn't. It does have some good features that allow me to tract other accounts including stock portfolio which by the way seems to be the only thing that updates automatically. I emailed Microsoft with my concerns several months ago and so far no response
"2007 redo with one major problem", Have been MS Money user for over 10 years, if memory serves. Which I think is, in part, how I got into this problem. Bought Money Plus bundled with TaxCut 2007 - net cost approximately $5-$10 vs. stand-alone TaxCut package (downloaded not store purchase). Install went fine, was upgrading Money 2007, which was the most recent in a series of upgrades since my original version. Long story short - no material changes over 2007 - in fact, in my opinion, there haven't been an significant upgrades for about 5 years, maybe more. Save, perhaps the invention of online banking expiration, thus forcing the user to upgrade. But I digress... The major problem was that Money Plus seemed to max out my processor (CPU = 100%), basically crashing my computer whenever I ran the program. Did some on-line research, found others had same problem and fixed it using File - Repair Money File - Remove all bills data. Apparently, the new version does not play nicely with old bills data. Seems to work okay now, so in essence I've paid $5-$10 to continue my on-line banking for additional year.
"Alright program to keep you in check.", The program is great for your basic needs. It connects to the banks very well and you can stay up-to-date on your finances. The budget is great but you have to make sure to input all you catagories or it doesn't give you a very good breakdown. The down side is you always have to log in to your MSN account to open the program. I don't know if there is a way to disable this fuction. It is a bit of a hassle just to see you money.
"Not worth it!", I had Money 2007 and there was an annoying bug! So I bought Money plus thinking that bug would have been fixed. Guess what! it is still there! Not only the bug but everything looks exactly like 2007.
Bottom-line upgrade if you really have to otherwise not worth the money!
"Money Plus", This product is very easy to use. It is very user friendly, and offers several different ways of visualizing your finances. Two thumbs up.
