Others say...
"OK DVD Player" This DVD player was a decent deal. The video quality is good and it remembers the last place on many DVDs to pick up at that point. The biggest negative that I can say is that it starts up slow and is slow to load in a DVD. It may be due to the advanced features loading. It tricks us sometimes by making us think that we didn't hit the on or off button. It's OK.
"Another great Sony Product" I have always had great success with Sony products and have always leaned towards them as a first option when purchasing new. Our previous DVD player was a Sony and had lasted for 11 years, through 3 young children and a move to a new house. The pick-up inside the unit was shot and it was time to shop for another. I'm very pleased with the DVD Player, it's ease of setup and it's flexibility of controls during playback. The picture is graet and the sound is much more balanced than our previous Sony. As a bonus, all of the Library DVDs now play flawlessly, which really satisfies the 3 young children.....
"two for one deal" I was very disapointed in Amazon for linking this with my new LCD television as though it were a good deal. I was not familiar with these DVDs that upscale to 1080.. but leared i could get virtually the same thing from sony for half the price.
"Sony Upconverting Progressive Scan DVD" Excellent product. Image quality is definitely improved. Still looking forward to purchasing a Blu Ray player though, because you will still be playing SD DVDs which do not have as much information as a HD disc does.
"Try this before going Blu Ray" This inexpensive DVD player does a tremendous job of upscaling DVDs to 1080P using HDMI. If you get close to your HDTV, you can see some conversion artifacts, but back about 6 feet from my 40" Sony 1080P Bravia, the arifacts are negligible.
Yes, Blu Ray discs are superior, but not enough so to make me replace my DVD collection.

What our customer's say!
"Worked for less than one year!", More and more of these players are being made like they're disposable! Had this for about 7 months when the "loading" flashing began and a month later it wouldn't play anything at all. A waste of money.
"Excellent DVD player", I was looking for a nice upconverter to use with my new HDTV and I came across this one. I love it. It plays pretty much everything you can think of, including dual layer burned DVDs. The upconverting isn't going to be Blu-Ray quality obviously, but it definitely enhances the picture quality. Great product!
"Near HD quality (when used with HDMI cable) at a low price", It's hard to beat beat all the features for this extremely low price. I already have 2 units and am considering buying a 3rd.
As long as you purchase & use a quality HDMI cable, the picture quality is excellent. The cable doesn't need to be expensive, but it must be HDMI to benefit from upscaling. If you use the cables included with the unit, you will not benefit from upscaling.
The player can recall where you stopped watching for up to 6 DVDs.
The unit is slim and only 8" deep. The DVD player needs ventilation. It will get hot if used in enclosed places such as behind glass cabinet doors.
This is an excellent alternative to anyone who isn't ready to take the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray plunge.
I've had no problems with this unit and highly recommend it.
"Only because no stars wasn't an option", We purchased this DVD player at Christmas. From day 1 the picture was very stretched vertically. This happened on every DVD we tried. We learned to live with it. We really aren't picky.
We've just passed July 4th and now the DVD player won't recognize any DVD or CD AT ALL. We contacted Sony and were told that we would need to send it in for warranty repair. BUT, they wanted us to pay $36 + shipping for the repair to be completed under warranty.
(I know, that didn't make sense to me either.)
Now sending it in for warranty repair is another roll of the dice. The representative explained that they may not even send the original unit back to us. They may send us a comparable unit. What is a comparable unit, we asked. The response that we got was that it would be whatever they decided to send us at the time. They did state that it might not even be the same model. Not much of a warranty repair on a player that lasted 7 months.
And now thanks to Sony, the search begins for a new (non-Sony) player.
"Great player for under 100 bucks", I got this to go with my 61" Samsung DLP and it looks great. Have not compared side-by-side with Blu-Ray but regular DVDs seem to be converted to hi def.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"ABSOLUTELY SATISFIED!", This DVD is near-perfect. Set up is easy, the picture is outstanding, and it will play all my JPEG discs, whether CD-R, CD-RW or DVDs. You can adjust the picture mode for DVDs to your liking, changing the brightness, contrast and sharpness. And for the JPEGS, there are several different modes to change from picture to picture. Also, get this: if I take a DVD totally out of the player, then put it in later, it starts where it left off. I love this thing.
"It does what it says it will do", For some reason the idea of a DVD player that upgrades standard DVD to simulated HD DVDs seemed a bit suspicious. I had just replaced our old tube TV with a 40" LCD HDTV. The old DVD player seemed to give OK results, but curiosity got the best of me. I chose the Sony only because the TV was a Sony. Other, less expensive brands may be just as good.
With both DVD players hooked up to the same TV I could try the same DVD in both and see if there was any difference. There was. The picture with the Sony upscaling player was noticeably better. There is a lot less pixilation. But, do not expect miracles. It does not get to Blue ray level of clarity.
I am quite happy with it until a) the price of Blue Ray players comes down and b) there are a lot more Blue Ray discs available.
"Disappointed", I recently purchased a AQUOS LC-52D82U 1080p LCD television. I had the regular DVD players and wanted to improved the DVD player without going to the expense of the HD or BLUERAY systems. After some research, I decided on Sony DVP-NS77H/B 1080p Upscaling DVD Player. It seemed like the best for the money. Set up was not difficult, nor is the use of the controls. What I found disappointing is the difference, or lack thereof, in the picture. My daughter and I both have copies of The Lord of the Rings DVDs so I used them as a test of picture quality . Leaving my existing player attached to the TV, using the traditional plugs; I connected the Sony Upscaling DVD using HDMI cables. I placed both into operation and switched back and forth between the two in-sync systems. The quality of the pictures were basically the same. Maybe a little more detail was available on the CGI parts of the system, but nothing like I expected.
Still, it is a good DVD player, just not what I understood it to be...
Service from AMAZON, however, is exactly what I expect, which has always been excellant!
"Great product", I bought this because of the reliability of the Sony name and was not disappointed. Setup was easy. Dvd's from feature films appear better than do dvd's from television shows, but I have read that that is due to the way they are filmed. Overall, I am very satisfied.
"Great DVD player for the money", There's a lot of hype about "HD" and 1080P now a days. I recently purchased a nice 50" plasma tv that supports this input via HDMI. Since I have a big DVD collection, I wanted to have a better viewing experience. So I purchased the Sony DVD player that does upscaling.
Bottom line - You do notice a difference in picture quality but it's not the same as BlueRay or HD because of the media being used. I purchased this for 2 reasons... price and time. It's inexpensive compared to a BlueRay or HD player and who knows where HD media is going just yet?
Be sure and check the specs on your TV before you buy this unit. There are a lot of tv's that only display 720p or 1080i, which isn't 1080p. Good luck and happy shopping!
