"TiVo Review"
The TiVo was very difficult to set up. Took several hours and 2 trips to the store to pick up cables that didn't come with the order... also, it should have come with at least 1 yr free service!

"Good for Tivo, but the OLD Tivo OS is frustrating"
This is a good Tivo, but it is frustrating that Tivo preistalles ancient versions of their OS on these systems. I had to go through TWO upgrades over slow dial up lines before I could get the wireless option to show up. This is just silly. But once it is installed and running, this is a nice system.

"Refurbished item sold as new!!!"
I bought this Tivo for my parents for Christmas. They called Tivo to activate it and were told by Tivo that the Tivo was refurbished. Because it was reburbished they didn't qualify for the $100 discount offer for starting a new service.

I bought this item new! I never buy refurbished items, especially not as a gift's. I feel really ripped off. What sould I do??

"Loved the TIVO, hated the unusual smell..."
I've been a very happy Tivo subscriber for years and decided to upgrade to the HD model. Setup was very simple... it was easy to get the cable cards from Comcast and the new features... especially the ability to instantly watch Netflix movies made me very, very happy. But within a few hours of plugging the Tivo in I started noticing an unusual odor, kind of like a dusty plastic smell, coming from the machine. I checked the internal temperature and everything appeared normal so I tried to ignore it thinking it might fade away over time. A week later, the smell was still there and I could notice it as soon as I walked into my living room. If I unplugged the Tivo the smell would go away but after about an hour of having it plugged in the smell would return and I would notice my sinuses beginning to constrict. I waited another week, thinking I might get used to it, but, no such luck. I have no idea what caused the smell but I was definitely having an allergic reaction to my new Tivo and finally, tired of being miserable in my own home, I decided to return it.

"Works Fine..."
I have two Tivo HDs. When you have more than one of these you can transfer recordings from one to the other. With a wired intranet in the house, a HD recording takes ablot ten seconds to be ready to play. Some movies are excluded from being transfered, but most are not protected.

I have noticed a slightly jerky decoding at times, but I think this is more a factor of the cable card and cable signal. I haven't noticed any issues with OTA reception.

What our customer's say!

"Strong product", After many years of using a ReplayTV 3000 and later a 4500 I made the move to a TiVo S3 a couple years ago. It's operation has be smooth and stable. A year later I added a 2nd S3 in a different room. Both have been rock solid with zero issues. I have added external drives to both of them and regularly use the Netflix streaming video feature.

There are really only two features I continue to miss from the ReplayTV boxes. The first is automatic commercial advance which is the feature that got ReplayTV sued out of existence by the entertainment industry. That one is never going to appear again for obvious reasons. The second is deep global searches that to find Season Premiers, Series Premier, Season Finales, Series Finales, films by star rating, films by age rating, etc., etc.

The aftermarket cottage industry that has grown up with TiVo DVR's deserves a mention as well. Several outfits offer larger replacement drives, salvaged power supplies, main boards etc. IMO the best tech support comes from these third parties as well as the forums devoted to them. I'm not saying TiVo doesn't have a responsibility to support their product, I'm just saying that I learned with the ReplayTV product that the common issues are well known and easy to fix.

"Thank the Lord for TiVo", We switched to the horribly unintuitive COX DVR 18 months ago, since our original TiVo couldn't record HD channels. After a lot of cable frustration and some penny-pinching, Santa finally brought us this TiVo TCD652160. I hooked it up before the COX guy arrived to install a MultiStream CableCard into the unit. Easy breezy.

It's fantastic, great to be back using one of the most intuitive interfaces and remotes ever developed. The TiVo seems more proactive than I remember about recording suggestions it think I might like - and it's grabbing good stuff.

The Netflix Instant Queue integration is magical. Even through the TiVo 802.11g dongle, movies are streaming from my netflix account at a higher quality than they were to my XBOX 360, with fewer interruptions.

Anyway, well worth it. Now that we have a baby and spend a bit more time on the couch (breastfeeding, etc) it's great to be able to watch good stuff, avoid live TV, and skip commercials easier. Plus, my cable bill is now $15 lower per month. Only negative is that there's sometimes a little screen flicker whenever the unit changes video modes (programs record in 1080, but TiVo menus seem to be in 720).

The DVR from your cable company may seem to have some of the same features, but it's like comparing an iPhone to a Samsung touchscreen phone. TiVo has perfected all of the little details (feel of the remote, sound effects, the way the play cursor jumps back when you stop fast forwarding. It's luxurious.

"Good integration of home network, internet, and TV", I bought a refurb unit direct from Tivo with a one year subscription and the HDMI cable. It works great with my antenna only connection to my HDTV and a Cat5 wire from my router which I recommend for a fast internet connection.

The advantages over my old vcr are amazing since I could not find reliable TV guides on the web. The Tivo's subcription price is well worth the advantage of the accurate schedule guide information for TV and internet video's. I am finding more free antenna programming that I knew existed. The ease of recording one or a "season's" supply of a program is such a joy.

Then I downloaded the Tivo "Desktop" (free) software which allows you to put nearly any photo and music files from your computer on your TV screen. This works so well that I later purchased the "Desktop Plus" version that adds video transfer. However I had to find a conversion program to mp4 for video files that are jpeg from my Cannon camera. With my wireless wifi laptop connection in my home it is so nice to throw any picture or video from my computer on the TV screen for the family to watch.

I must admit that I initially had problems getting the Tivo "Desktop" software to connect until I reset my Linksys WRT54G wireless router back to the original firmware. Then it connected via plug 'n play with no special settings.

Tivo does connect direct to photo sharing web sites from Picasa and Photobucket. If others send you pictures on these photo services then you can view them easily on your TV. But if they use other photo services, most of them don't allow batch downloading to photo files; I haven't found a way to get their pictures on the TV via Tivo. I hope Tivo can add many more photo services soon.

The next big advantage is the Tivo internet connection to Netflix and Amazon Unbox for movies. I've used both and the picture quality and sound is as good as the average rental DVD. I tend to use my $8.95/mo Netflix subscription the most since I can download an unlimited number of movies (at no additional charge) for "instant watch" via the Tivo. With Netflix I select many more movies even if I'm unsure that I saw it before, or I can take more chances on unknown films since I can delete and move on to the next movie in a minute.

Also there are a bunch of internet video programs that Tivo can connect to for special interests and you can schedule them for download just like TV programs. I expect this will expand greatly in the future.

The "365" web radio programs was a disappointment since I like talk shows and none of my favorite national talk shows are available. I was hoping to listen to past shows on demand.

"Tivo- best DVR on the market... by far!", Tivo is leagues above your cable provider's DVR box. It is really the little things that make Tivo better, a lot of little things. First off you have the great looking interface and audio feedback. The menu system is a pleasure to navigate compared to your cable provider's DVR box. The TV Guide in Tivo is a great design providing the next 2 weeks of shows, updated nightly, to your screen. You can hook up your home computer to Tivo and have it play your home videos, pictures and music library and play them on your home theater system. Once you connect Tivo to the web, you get many more goodies such as Netflix "Instant Watch" movie downloads (if you are a Netflix member), you can browse for movie show times in your local area and buy movie tickets through Fandango. You can browse YouTube and watch the videos right on your TV. You can even order pizza off of your Tivo Series III. Another great feature is when you are going to record a live sporting event, Tivo will ask you if you want to add extra time to the recording so that you won't miss the very end and you can record an unexpected overtime. Tivo has an 8 second jump back feature that works instantly without hesitation even when pressed multiple times. It has a jump forward 30 seconds feature to help skip annoying commercials. You can record non-copyrighted TV and movies and have them transferred to your home computer and converted then put on your iPod with Tivo To Go. You can also increase the hard drive size by connecting an eSATA external hard drive so you can store more gigabytes of HD movies and HD TV. You can't go wrong with a Tivo Series III.

"and now it works with Netflix? w00t!", Now TIVO can tie into your Netflix instant queue and stream movies directly to your TV!!!

I sent my Moxi DIVO (Dumb-TIVO) right back to the cable company in trade for a multi-stream cable card and never looked back.

Pros:
Tivo tapes things while I sleep!
Picture quality is great
records two channels at once
Works with Amazon UnBox and now Netflix!
Why would anyone watch live TV anymore?

Cons:
One drawback is that cable on-demand and pay-per-view won't work with a cable card.
Your cable company will blame TIVO for any problems with your service.

"TiVo changes the way you watch TV", I have two TiVo boxes: a series 2 and this one. The series 2 box is analog, and I worry it might not work after the switch to digital. This one I know will work, however, because I have my TiVo connected to two antennas--and not a cable or satellite box--I'm not sure if I'll be able to record two channels at once come February.

So the great things about this TiVo box are:
1. Record all the shows you want automatically and watch them whenever you want. With just two clicks on the remote you call tell your TiVo that you like Ugly Betty, for example, and that you want it to record Ugly Betty whenever it goes on. No more will your schedule revolve around the TV schedule. You watch the shows you want to watch whenever you want to watch them.
2. It temporarily records whatever show you're watching, so you can have an instant replay whenever you want, or you can pause to answer the phone or whatever. No more scheduling breaks around commercials. You can break whenever you want, and you can zoom past those commercials.
3. You can type in keywords that interest you and set the box to just look for programs with those keywords or even automatically record them. For example, if you like Robin Williams, you can have your TiVo automatically record Robin Williams movies or just let you know when they'll be on.
4. There are a lot of extras, like music videos, music, special videos, weather forcasts, games and lots more.
5. If you have a Netflix subscription, you can watch movies in your "Watch Instantly" queue on your TV through your TiVo box. Unfortunately, I've found some movies stream better than others, with the sound coming much later than the picture. Hopefully this will be fixed in the future.
6. You can also purchase or rent Amazon Unboxed movies to watch through your TiVo on your TV.

Aside from the streaming problem mentioned above, we have run into problems with our TiVo box from time to time. There have been times when the machine just got stuck when we selected to see a Netflix movie, and there have been other times we've had to reboot. Some things can take a long time, like exiting your Season Pass Manager after making changes. And there was a time the TiVo box wasn't recording anything because there were too many things in our Season Pass Manager. (It turned out my daughter entered the same program at the same time on four different channels, which is probably what caused the problem).

Yes, it's not perfect, but one of the great things about TiVo is the company is constantly updating the software. Old problems are fixed, and new features are added. In short, TiVo just keeps getting better than better.

One small problem with this box is that the hard drive is a bit small, particularly if you record in HD. We haven't bought a Western Digital WDG1S5000VN 500GB My DVR Expander eSATA yet, but that will be our next step. If I were purchasing this box now, I would probably by the DVR expander with it.

"Great product", I love everything about this Tivo. The display is nice and easy to understand. The setup when you first plug it in is a breeze, and the box came with all the cables, just in case you don't already have them all. I dropped a star because of the monthly Tivo service that, as a new Tivo customer, I wasn't aware of. Unless you plan on having this for two years only, it makes the most sense not to opt for the monthly, quarterly or annual plans, so I ended up paying $400 more for lifetime Tivo service(without which this product won't work). At least it transfers with the Tivo box, should I ever wish to sell it!

"works great; easy setup", I got this HD DVR to replace my older Tivo. The instructions for setup are great, as are the onscreen guides and the book. They really take care to explain the things that we need to know, like how to get it set up but call the cable company to get the Calcards installed, then redo the guided setup and you're done. I followed their advice and was able to watch the non-HD cable channels without the cablecards installed. Then after the cable guy came, I was getting teh HD signal crystal clear. They give composite video cables. I bought an HDMI cable to connect to my TV instead. And to connect to my stereo digitally I bought an optical fiber cable. It was all pretty obvious...things worked after being pluggerd in without subtle setup issues.
My HD TV broke unfortunately, so I had tohook this up to my old TV for now, and it works completely fine there too.

"Tivo, a great product", Have had an older Tivo for years...a "must have" for me. I purchased this one as I upgraded to HDTV as the older model could not handle the new format.

Bought Tivo instead of the cable companies offering...Tivo is still the easiest to use and, I think, the best choice for a DVR. Am very happy with it.

"Superb picture quality - easy to use menu", Hookup was easy. Suggest getting cards from cable provider (to eliminate the need for a cable box). Channel changing is much faster than my old tivo. Piture quality is excellent. Have had for 5 months now - flawless in operation. I highly recommend this item.
