"An Awesome Horror Flick That Isn't More of the Same!" Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) is a scientist assisting Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) with a very bizarre experiment. The pair have built a machine that stimulates the mysterious pineal gland resulting in the ability to see bizarre life forms the human eye cannot. This proves to be extremely dangerous, as one of the creatures devours Pretorius and leaves Crawford to take the rap. In search of answers, the D.A. and the police bring the gorgeous Dr. Katherine McMichaels into the picture. A brilliant young scientist who prefers experimentation to incarceration of patients, Katherine manages to get Crawford released into her custody and she and a pro football player-turned-cop named Bubba Brownlee (Ken Foree) go back to the house where Pretorius died to try and recreate the situation. Naturally, when Dr. McMichaels discovers the machine really works (not to mention arouses the sexual appetites of those exposed to it), she cannot leave it alone, and the bad things start happening all over again.
"From Beyond" is another Lovecraft inspired film from the people who brought you "Re-Animator" (which I also highly recommend). The story is disturbing and fantastic, and the cast, including Re-Animator alumni Jeffrey Combs and (the extremely "my type") Barbara Crampton, and zombie-bashing hero of "Dawn of the Dead" Ken Foree, is flawless. On top of that, great music, impressive pre-CGI effects, and disgusting gore add up to one heck of a good time! The Unrated Director's Cut DVD is excellent, with a great widescreen presentation, a lively and fun commentary from Director Stuart Gordon, Producer Brian Yuzna, and stars Combs and Crampton, great storyboard to film comparisons, a photo montage, interview with the composer, and featurettes on the director and the restored scenes. Yes, this true director's cut has some great scenes in it never included in the feature before due to the ratings system! So, if you're a fan of Lovecraft, horror in general, or any of this cast, or if you'd just like to see a horror film that isn't the same old thing, you definitely need to pick this one up!
"If You Loved Dagon or Re-Animator, You'll Want To See This..." The Re-Animator movies may be marginally better but From Beyond is still brilliant. Combs is my favorite actor- the only good thing in at least one bad movie I have that I actually fell asleep in when he was off-screen for a bit.
I just love the way he can deliver the most outrageous lines totally straight-faced with utter belief and sincerity. He is the PERFECT mad scientist. You really BELIEVE this man is just psychologically off enough to do whatever he chooses to.
I never got the motivations for mad scientists in 40s, 50s and 60s movies. Oh yeah, there were the scientific setbacks and the reprimands from peers but you just never really believed that was enough to drive them over the edge.
Maybe the characters Combs played were raised by Ed Gein or something. Whatever the case, you BELIEVE they're walking that tight edge between genius and insanity. You see it in his eyes and it's unmistakable in his posture. The intriguing plot, good special effects and intentionally funny tidbits are all bonuses for me, making this DVD well worth the money. I've already made all my friends with any taste for horror watch Gordon's Dagon. Now they'll just have to watch this- hahaa!
"Good for the 80's - but not really kitchy . . ." I would have probably really enjoyed this in the 80's - but now. . . not so much. It's a little outdated - and the effects and acting are somewhat poor. I can't believe people have rated it so high - maybe it's nostalgia.
"oh!!!!!!" This flick is a l e g e n d. A great rendering of HP Lovecraft's vision. Before computer graphics, organic, special effects in it's hay day. One of the weirdest, sickest, most bizarre and strangely sexual movie you will ever see. My Mom described it best as some sick subterranean subconscious nitemare from underwater Hell.
"Mad scientist doin' mad $#!T!" From Beyond is a very twisted flick that gripped me from the beginning. Unlike a lot of horror movies that seem to be incredibly weak on story and strong on gore. From Beyond's biggest strength for me is the story with gore to match. I was hooked to this flick from the start and it only got better. I just find the imagination to conjure up something like this to be amazing.
So many films begin with the mad scientist botching an experiment. This pair of genuises actually succeed in a twisted way. They accomplish their experiment creating a machine that triggers a part of the brain that can open up a parellel dimension. Of course, this spells danger for the immediate company and soon the average joe.
The acting seemed a bit too campy when compared to the seriousness of the movie. Still, it was very good and even funny at times. The gore in this movie will definitly satisfy most gorehounds. There's a good amount of suspense and I didn't find it predictable.
Sometimes even to me, my claims of being a fan of horror comes under serious questioning. How a gem like this never registered on my radar until now is BEYOND me.

What our customer's say!
"Wild", Like a lot of people, I first saw "From Beyond" on home video in the late '80s, when I was still in high school. Needless to say, its a movie that makes an impression. Its taken years and years for this film to finally be released legitimately on DVD, and after very recently watching it again for the first time in ages, that original impression has not changed - "From Beyond" is one of the most delightfully gross, perverse and flat out weird horror movies ever made. Sprouting from the kernal of an H.P. Lovecraft short story, Stuart Gordon really takes the film into some very weird and uncomfortable places (no, not the backseat of a Volkswagon), combining physics, psychology, and sexuality into an icky, slimy, grotesque tale that harkens back to and embodies the original source material. How much fun you have watching "From Beyond" really depends on your own sensibilities, but it can't be denied that this is a *bold* and uncompromising movie, particularly this new director's cut, which reincorporates material that was trimmed by order of the MPAA to get the movie an R rating back in the day. Its kind of breathtaking to realize how many lines Gordon was willing to not only step on but waltz over, and then to remember that he did it 20 years ago. Easily one of the best Lovecraft-related films, and far superior than most of the dreck that followed after it in the '90s. If this is your thing, then definitely check out Dan O'Bannon's brilliant "The Resurrected", and Gordon's own "Re-Animator" and "Dagon". "From Beyond" isn't as arch and playful in tone as "Re-Animator", but its a must-see in the Lovecraft film oeuvre. And Jeffrey Combs remains the man.
"Another cult classic from the creators and actors of re-animator", I bought this dvd becasue i loved re-animator.its the same director and two of the stors.jeffery combs delivers another great performance.the story can be somewhat confusing but this is a great movie that everyone should watch or own.the blood and gore are really good considering theres no computer graphics.the acting is top notch and i highly recomend it.i never saw the r-rated cut but this unrated one is excellent.i only gave it 4 stars cause like i said the plot is a little hard to follow but thats just me nit picking.horror fans or just fans of jeffery combs or stuart gordan will love this.the plot dosent lag in anyway and once you start watching it youll be hooked until the end.
"Solid Script true to the Lovecraft tradition", This is no Acedemy Award winner - but it is probably one of the best Lovecraft adaptations in a modernish setting. It has a solid script for a horror movie. It understands that often the most terrifying moments come not from the creepy-crawlies but the worst in human nature, yet it also has its heroic moments. Since this is true horror, of course, it does not have a happy ending. Worth while having if you think there is more to horror than splatter fests, or if you are a Lovecraft afficiando.
"Horror classic!.", From Beyond was the followup film to the fantastic Re-animator and is just as good as that film, like Re-Animator From Beyond is based on a story by the brilliant horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. The acting here comes courtesy of two of Re-Animator's best actors Jeffrey Combs, a man that is well known in the world of B-Movies and Barbara Crampton the scream queen that we all remember from the infamous 'head' sequence in Re-Animator. The dvd was finally released last year and it was about time, I could not believe how long I had to wait for this and when it finally arrived I was so excited and it was definitely worth the wait. MGM decide to release the film completely uncut and added tons of special features in it making this an essential purchase for any hard core horror fan.
The film opens with a physicist Crawford Tillinghast (played by the always-great Jeffrey Combs), working on a device called The Resonator which is supposed to stimulate the brain's pineal gland (believed to be a dormant sensory organ) with the hopes of unlocking a "sixth sense". Instead he starts to see weird eels flying through the air and then gets bit by one and runs downstairs to tell his sadomasochistic colleague Dr. Pretorius about his success. Pretorius soon has his head bitten off by multidimensional beings and all that happens right before the credits start yes very nice!. We then find out that Crawford's in a state mental institution where he's to be evaluated for Pretorius' murder, it seems that by the end of the night Pretorius' headless corpse was left on the laboratory floor with no head to be found. Crawford's only explanation "It bit off his head... like a gingerbread man!" then the film becomes increasingly more bizarre when a psychiatrists Kathrine McMichaels (Crampton) performs a CAT scan on Crawford and it shows that his pineal gland is abnormally enlarged. She insists on taking Crawford back to the house to recreate the experiment to perhaps understand whats really been going on and find something that explain his alleged behavior.
Accompanied by a cop named Leroy "Bubba" Brown (Ken Foree from the original Dawn of the Dead)they go back to the scene of the crime and soon the madness starts. The film uses a lot of imagination as you can see and it was totally awesome and over the top very much like Re-animator so if you liked that film then your gonna love this. It has tons of gore in it including brain sucking, decapitations, eye ball gouging ect. it also has Barbra Crampton in a sexy S&M outfit and great special fx, this film was obviously done before the use of CGI so all of the slimy creature fx had to done manually. The idea of all-consuming hedonism or sensory pleasure that goes so far beyond the normal senses that pain, pleasure and all other senses merged into one was pretty amazing and made it seem more like a sci/fi film as well as horror, you should definitely check this out especially if your a Re-animator fan or if you enjoy watching a crazy and over the top but fun 80's horror film.
"More gore than sense, but entertaining if you can stand the camp.", Fan's of exloding heads and melting dogs rejoice! From Beyond takes graphic bodily transformations to a level that even J. Carpenter must envy. People burst out of other people, heads are twisted off, eye stalks force their way through foreheads, and floppy elongated fingers grope attractive young women!
The story is nonsense, the characters are ridiculous, their motivations totally unbelievable, but this is still a must see film for fans of classic horror.
If you don't mind the terrible acting and (by today's standards) silly FX, then there might be room on your DVD rack for this gore filled triumph of campy horror. On the other hand, if you're into scary movies that take themselves more seriously (6th sense, Saw etc.) then you'll be using this one as a coaster after the first viewing.

"Spirit Of Lovecraft", The Gordon/Paoli team struck gold a second time with their second cinematic Lovecraft adaptation. Lovecraft's From Beyond was a rather short story. There's no way Gordon could have stretched that story to 90 minutes, so a huge bulk of this film was made up by Dennis Paoli. In fact, the pre-credit sequence more or less is the short story. The rest of the film merely expands on the concepts and themes Lovecraft introduced in his story. Dr. Tillinghast(Jeffrey Combs of course!) and Dr. Pretorious(Ted Sorel) believe that the pineal gland harbors our sixth sense, and by stimulating it, can fully develop this sixth sense. They create a "resonator" machine for this purpose. The machine stimulates the pineal gland alright, but what the doctors don't expect is that this allows us to see odd creatures that live on a parallel plane with us, and allows us to be seen by these creatures. It also makes folks horny and prone to S&M. When the resonator experiment goes crazy and Pretorious is killed and his spirit body whisked away to this parallel plane, Combs is blamed. To prove his story isn't madness, psychologist Karen(Barbara Crampton) wants to repeat the experiment with Tillinghast under the observation of a cop named Bubba(Ken Foree!). Slimy tentacled monsters, creepy crawlies and brain eating ensue. Once again Gordon made a quirky, gory and entertaining little horror flick. While not as tongue in cheek as Re-Animator, it's still not taking itself 100% seriously. Outside of us weirdos that like this kind of thing, this movie probably isn't gonna score high points with most folks. Hell, there are even quite a few Lovecraft fans that have a bone to pick with this film. But just remember that it's Lovecraft's concept more on display here than the tone of his writing. But as far as cult horror fans go, I'm only preaching to the choir as they say. Definitely worth picking up or viewing again, especially now that we have the full version.
"FROM BEYOND...and Further", This is an awesome piece of reconstructive video surgery. For Fans of the original who "WANTED MORE" and got it( to paraphrase the posters of the time), this is more and then some.As explained in the Commentary and in the brilliant extras, the HPL Story is about 7 Pages, and whilst much of the rest of the movie is created by the writers, they do draw extensively on HPL to expand on the material that they extend out to 86 minutes or so.Thankfully this is in Surround sound, so CRANK IT UP, since the FX and the special FX audio is much better. This is a very VERY good Buy for Stuart Gordon fans ( And Barbara Crampton fans as well, etc ).
DVD: The Commentary is essential. In my view, you see either the Video Extras first or hear the commentary, or the other way around, however, it makes a lot more sense to watch the Video Feature which shows the EDITING ROOM where they rebuilt the scenes, and Stuart Gordons commentary makes a whole lot of sense. Everyone sounds like they had a whole lot of fun making the film, as well as doing the commentary. ENJOY
"H.P. Who? A Twisted Film for Twisted People (Like Me).", Let me clear the air very quickly so you don't waste your time deciding if you agree with me or not; I NEVER compare films to the video games, books, short stories or TV shows they are sourced from . I believe that as a different medium, expectations for a film should be a clean slate. I refuse to hate a perfectly good and/or entertaining film because it was unfaithful to its source material. End of speech.
I'm going to spend the rest of the review trying to help those who have no idea what to expect from this film without telling anything about the story. # = spoiler.
-THE SOURCE MATERIAL I know! I know! I just wanted to point out that the Director, Stuart Gordon, emphasizes in a featurette that the pre-credit sequence (roughly the first 5 minutes) is his interpretation of the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. The rest of the film is strictly from his twisted little mind. Given this, you should not have any expectations concerning Lovecraft.
-WHAT IS THIS REALLY LIKE? This is a very tough film to describe. It is sort of a cross between John Carpenter's "The Thing", David Cronenberg's version of "The Fly", "The Return of the Living Dead" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show". It sounds absurd when I put it that way. However, there is definitely some very twisted and grotesque shape shifting going on (The Thing). There is definitely some human anguish over becoming something regrettable (The Fly). There is, without a doubt, some brain eating going on (Return of the Living Dead). Finally, this is certainly a horror film with eroticism as the dominant theme (Rocky Horror Picture Show", sorry; I couldn't think of another horror film with such gratuitous use of a leather teddy). That said; assume freaky sexual stuff, a fair amount of silly gore and some beautifully campy acting.
-ABOUT THAT CAMPY ACTING... Jeffrey Combs (endless cameos on Star Trek shows and horror films) has never even sniffed an Oscar as far as I know. What he has done though, is embrace his role as the king of obscure camp. He totally throws himself into his roles, yet never comes off as totally serious. This keeps thing pretty light despite the dark subject matter. He is plenty fun as the mad scientist's strait-laced assistant and pineal gland maniac. The down-to-earth beautiful Barbara Crampton (Meaning; you might think you had a shot) might be the least modest horror movie icon that could actually act her way out of a paper bag. She does a passable and sometimes interesting job as a Psychiatrist in this film. So, it comes as a complete shock when you see how far she is willing to go with her womanly reputation on the line. In the end, she gets the last laugh; a really nice piece of acting. I wish she had gotten more roles. Ken Foree (original "Dawn of the Dead") is equally campy yet enjoyable as a police officer assigned to guard the "crazy" Combs. Men be warned, Ladies lookout; he runs around in a pair of tiny bikini undies.
-THE DVD If you knew how many scenes were cut for the theatrical release, you would be appalled. If this film got anything less than an NC-17 in a theater (after its time) you would also be appalled. Thank goodness this is uncut and restored. The picture is pristine and the re-cut seamless. The featurettes are adequate with great input from Gordon. The thing I personally got a kick out of was the commentary. All the important people are there and have many entertaining things to say about the production. Barbara Crampton is extremely cool when her nude scenes play. This might be my favorite commentary track on a DVD.
-FINALLY I didn't really tell you much about this DVD specifically. I tried to give you a feel for it rather than a literal play-by-play. I get plenty of ghoulish giggles from this movie and it is plenty creepy as well. "From Beyond" is more shocking than scary and is not to be taken too seriously. However, it is not a visually easy film either. It is often cheesy and silly and as often gruesome and disturbing. The acting is highly campy and enjoyable while the visuals are surprisingly well done. # If in doubt, you should like watching a man in his bikini underwear fighting a giant worm with a kitchen knife or a women being sexually assaulted by a pseudo-human blob.
"Great sci-fi/horror film!", Suspending belief is practically a pre-requisite to watching a sci-fi or horror film, and doing so will be especially helpful when watching From Beyond. Stuart Gordon delivers another solid Lovecraft adaptation featuring the stars of the previous Reanimator, Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton.
Two scientists unlock a passage to another dimension via the intense vibrations emmitted from their invention "the resonator". Activating the pineal gland in the brain, it acts as a third eye through which the creatures from beyond, that we unknowingly co-exist with, can be visualized. When the experiment goes awry leaving one scientist dead, the other (Combs) is taken for criminally insane and placed in an institution. After being analyzed by a researcher (Crampton), it is decided that the two, along with a law official (Ken Foree), will return to the house to re-enact the experiment. When the resonator is restored, the group begins gradually venturing deeper into the beyond and for more extended periods of time until it becomes apparent that they are being overcome by its powerful influence.
The plot here is an interesting one considering all the real life speculation about the pineal gland, but at such a short run time, the emphasis seems to be more on the gore and creature effects rather than the story itself. Not to say that this is a bad thing, the effects here are really quite good especially for the time. The characters are all well acted, particularly Combs with his trademark over-the-top performance that manages to add a hint of humor to the story despite the grim goings-on. Though perhaps not as timeless as Reanimator, From Beyond is another fantastic Stuart Gordon film that is essential viewing as far as horror and science fiction go.
As a few others mentioned, it's too bad they didn't use the VHS artwork for this DVD as it is much cooler than the cover they used instead. (Actually I don't even know what the cover of this DVD is supposed to be, it's not something that appears the movie...), but life goes on. At least it's the movie in its uncut form. Be sure to check this one out!
"B-Movie B-Ware", The reviews here are skewed wayy positive by many viewers who are age-old fans rejoicing over a long delayed DVD release. Yes the uncut version must be a whole lot better than what has gone before and the video quality throughout is great. I can only imagine the travesty of a cut version, the restored bits all fit in quite well.
But keep in mind, this is B-Movie material and although I really really like B-Movies, this one did not make it to my "keeper" pile and I'm pretty lax about that, most movies I get are keepers. So if you're a fan, buy the DVD, but if you're new to this director or looking to expand your horror collection I recommend to skip this one.
