Others say...
"Disappointing, repetitive, a one trick pony." Normally I like to see games through until the end, even if they are mediocre. I just ended up putting this one down out of boredom. Army of Two has all the elements to make a good game, but they are all arranged and executed poorly.
AoT has a few "key features" and the game basically beats you in the head with them, repeatedly. In fact, if you don't play the game precisely how the developers intended you won't do very well. It's really very constricting. The aggro system doesn't really translate into fun, it translates into a monotonous repetitive sequence that you will be required to perform. A prime example of this: the ridiculously useless except for specific parts "Co-op sniping mode". Traversing the game really is a matter of executing the exact same formula. All the main bosses require you basically flank them and then shoot them because they are invincible from the front.
Aiming your weapon doesn't seem to make it all that much more accurate, and it usually takes an impressive number of shots to drop the average enemy. Regularly I had to put two high caliber rounds into the average enemy grunt's face, even at very close range.
The voice acting and dialog are utter garbage and are physically irritating to have to suffer through. It isn't the foul language, because I'm like a sailor with my colorful words, but it's just the idiotic content of their conversations. Over and over again, the basically same idiocy.
AoT does have an interesting variation on the cover systems we've seen in these types of game -- implied cover. Anytime you are near cover and you try to shoot at something where the cover is in the way your character will move his gun around to clear the cover. It's kind of fluid, but there can be perspective issues. The environment, therefore, takes on that "Gears of War" syndrome -- where everything is pretty much full height, crouching cover height, or too round to utilize.
Overall, I would say it probably wouldn't be a bad rent, but buying it is something I'd only consider if you really enjoyed renting it. Or found it very for cheap and didn't have any other game on your plate. One last note: to be fair, I never bothered to play it co-op. I literally couldn't find anyone else interested, for one, and I don't really feel the addition of a human player would change how you played the game at all. The only benefit to a human player would be the social aspect.
"Okay not Great" We have played Halo, Gears of War and some others and I really feel this game in no way lives up to either of those. The language is a lot stronger than it needs to be to get the message of the game across. I never see how *excess swearing* adds to the fun of a game. Then a lot is based on cooperative mode where one can't do a thing without the other (thus the title 'Army of Two' I guess. I didn't have any trouble with the controls but I have to say we were pretty disappointed with the end, pretty lame. The 'shopping' for weapons and body armor was also pretty lame, not a lot to do there to better what you are wearing for protection or in the weapon department.
It was okay as these types of games go, but a bit disappointing.
"its OK" I played this with my cousin who was over here for a week. It takes a few hours to finish. The controls can be a little hard to remember at first and the language is pretty strong. The double player thing is cool though. Somehow it wasn't as fun as i expected it to be. I suggest renting it.
"Army of Two Review" Army of Two is great to play a single game but it will be greater playing online. The visual is great as the weapons you can use are too.
"A Game Evolved" Unlike the game Battlefield Bad Company where every step is one in the wrong direction this game evolves a Genre started by Gears Of War.A lot of games even great ones make game mechanics that are confusing and awkwark. But this is not the case. You intuitively begin to use these mechanics to your advantage right away and discover that great games have to have this type easy to use mechanics. The Tutorial is bar none the best one of any game explaining everything you need to understand.Explaining and Practicing Agro will even give you an important Achievement! The way you change and upgrade your weapons are done in a a way in which after you hit a new checkpoint you can have the option of changing or upgrading them. And trust me you'll want do get as much money as possible through missions to unlock them. You can also unlock Masks,Armor and even the appearance of your weapons. You have three types of weapons Heavy,Medium and light and the right blend in different situation.
The game invokes Team work and indeed that is important. But a lot of times you can command your partner to clear entire spans of a map without you moving a muscle. And the most annoying and definately a flaw is when you send him to an otherwise unopposing situation,he goes down and you have to drag him to cover and revive him.And the A.I. in this game is Smart. They will try to flank you,use suppressive fire, throw grenades, man unused turrets and will group up to become more effective in certain place. So,you'll be trying to grab your buddy and take round after round nearly to the break of death. And even though He's firing his gun to support you as you try to save his life most times both of you go down and once that happens gave over.Grenades aren't used a whole lot, because most enemies are too smart to stand there and just be blown up.Plus the system in which you use exposes you to enemy fire WAY too much.
However that's about it with the negatives. Here comes some more great things. The story is actually pretty good and the main characters are expertly done and fit perfectly. And most of the events are base in real life conflicts. Now there was a big controversy about the game when it was was first announced that part of the game would have events and images about 9/11.It does, but I believe they did it quite nicely and with good taste that I guarantee wouldn't offend anybody who saw the scene.I'm not a reviewer who reveals the story, but I will say that it's really good. And when you finish the game you'll feel that you have actually accomplished something.
Online is great as well.I only played a few games online, but from what I played of it was fun and when you get a great paring of players it becomes really tactical and like a fine game of Chess. And people like Halo 3 or Call Of Duty 4 get excited about playing.Though there are people who are loud mouth trash talkers who like nothing better than to insult you on your skills and call you every derogatory name in the book.
Army Of Two is a shining example of how you evolve a genre of Gameplay without ruining the game in the process. It should be noted that what works the best in the game is mechanics they modified from ones in Games such as in Gears Of War.Small Tweaks that should have always been standard in every future releases. And how more fluid things progress and you fight. And controlling your partner and him actually being useful.Although it had some noticible flaws that keep it from being a solid five if you thinking about buying this game then do so knowing that you just picked up a quality game worth your hard earned money.

What our customer's say!
"Very Good", I rented this game, came home and played it. I loved it. I am a kid and haven't played many M games. I played it for a few minutes and you could already tell there where bad words in the game. The graphics are great. One of the other great things about the game is that you can earn money and use it to buy more guns and armor. I would recomend this game to anyone who likes 3rd person shooters. Another great thing about the game is that you can be ducking behind a barrier and just put your hand up and shoot which I haven't seen in any other game. The last great thing is that if you're next to your partner and press A they will interact with you, but if you press the Right Trigger you will wack, headbut, and hit each other in fun! Overall I think this is ok for kids over 11 only if you're not afraid of trash talk.
"bad language", The game is awesome. THe coop gameplay takes the game to a whole new level i played it and beat it several times with my friends. The Single player game is same a coop but it just isn't as fun.
Although I loved the game the language was over the top. It totally ruined the game having that much cursing... i mean i can handle a little her and there but i think every cut scene had one curse word or another. I was unnessicary and took away from the game. I don't care what anyone else says there is no need to put anything like that in a video game. If I had know it was going to be like that I would not have purchasing the game.
Overall the gameplay was good so if you aren't afriad of offensive language I reccomend you buy the game. I would not have bought this game for my kids given what i know now though.
"Probably would be better with two", I finally got around to renting Army of Two, and will definitely recommend a rent instead of a buy. While the game is enjoyable, there are some things that hold it back. Your AI partner leaves much to be desired; there are times when you'll tell him to hold aggro, only to find out that he doesn't really feel like it. This is a pain later on when you've got a ton of enemies shooting at you, and a dumb computer doing it's own thing, causing you to restart countless times at the last checkpoint. I imagine that this wouldn't be an issue in co-op, since you and your buddy could talk it out (I didn't play co-op, so I can't say for sure). Along those lines, I had to shoot the computer at 3-4 different spot because he kept getting stuck on the level. That leads to another issue; getting stuck. There were a few times in the game (most noticeably the monorail level) where I myself would get stuck. I would move the stick, and the camera would shake like I was moving, but I was not moving at all. It fixed itself eventually, but it was a huge inconvenience.
If you're expecting a long, engaging game, look somewhere else. It took me five days to beat (due to other responsibilities), with a total of maybe 6-7 hours game time. It probably wouldn't have even taken that long had I actually had a human partner. The story is a little thin, and I felt like it was trying to make a moral point (private military companies = evil corporations). Sometimes the objectives aren't always made clear on your GPS. If you look to far right or left, the red arrow guiding you will disappear...and sometimes there's not even a red arrow to guide you.
At times, the weaponry feels a little weak, and this leads to another of my issues: you knock someone down with a shot (say a sniper round or rifle shell), but you can't kill them until they're going through their get back up animation. If someone's on the ground, and I'm shooting them, they shouldn't be able to get back up.
For parents, you need to know there is a LOT of cursing. I know the game takes place with two ex-Army guys (and I know how Army guys are, being a former one myself) put into some overwhelming firefights. So, like a good soldier, they're gonna curse...a lot, and then some. It's not a problem for me now, but being a new father I'm sure in the near future it will become one. As for the violence, I think it's fairly tame compared to some games (namely Gears where you can chainsaw the locust with blood spattering on the screen)...there's blood, but not an overabundance of it.
I think my final gripe with the game is the menu screens/load and wait times. Just to start playing, you have to go through 4 (if I remember correctly) menu screens. Then you need to wait for the game to load. If it's your first time, you'll have to watch a cut scene (which you'd probably do anyways). If it's your second time, you have to watch the same cut scene...that's right, there's no skipping ahead to the fun parts you sneaky tricksters! During the mission, you can go "mid-mission" shopping, which is a neat idea...only it takes a while to load the screen, then you need to go through even more menu options to get what you want.
Overall, I had an alright time with the game. If not for trying to get the achievements, I wouldn't play through the game again. It's good for a run through, but after that there's not really much to bring you back (unless you're after achievements like myself).
"A solid co-op FPS, but only after you get the free DLC.", This title initially came across as just another mediocre FPS. However, after I played through the additional down-loadable content it improved it's status markedly. The two highlights of the game are: The gun customization system that emulates RPG like leveling elements through financial resource management. Strategic use of the "aggro" system- combining suppressing fire techniques, distraction and flanking.
Whole story line maybe seen as telegraphed the game features a narrative does create a set of final bosses you genuinely want to "eliminate with extreme prejudice." However, the first few bosses are merely cliched munition fodder.
Combat sequences are well paced and unfold in an intuitive manner.
Vehicle (hovercraft specifically) combat and parachuting sequences have a good feel to them and excellent physics but they are so easy they become quickly forgotten.
One other thing of note is that this game does a good job of creating an immersive atmosphere for the Blackwater-esque corporate mercenary that is lacking in other titles of this genre.
While it's no COD4 or Gears of War it is definitely exceeds the benchmarks of the average FPS titles that feature tacked-on co-op. It becomes readily apparent the this game was designed around the co-op experience and that's where it shines brightest.
I would put the total experience somewhere between 3&1/2 and 4 stars.
"Lucky to get 2 stars", I absolutely love first person shooter games. I've been an avid fan of them since the early days of Doom. And I usually play them all.
I was excited when this game came out, it sounded really interesting because of the Co-op. Well, save your money.
While the graphics are not too bad, and the storyline is at least average if not better, the controls are absolutely horrible. In my opinion the thing that makes or breaks a FPS is the ability to control your character's movement *intuitively*. Having to snap back to back to keep a circle cleared may work really well in real life, but it is so confusing in a game that I literally sold the game after playing it for 2 hours. I tried really hard to get into the controller and get used to it, and I'm a pretty patient person, but try as I did, I just couldn't get good at the controls.
My advice is to rent this game first! Try it out, see if you are okay with the control layout BEFORE you invest your money.
I hope this was helpful.

"A quality title that exceeds more than it disappoints", Army of Two is a co-op focused 3rd person shooter from EA's Montreal studios; a relatively recent studio formed in 2003 by EA largely comprised of former studio acquisitions made by EA over the years. Being the studio's first effort, Army of Two delivers as a respectable entry into the 3rd person genre that largely satisfies more than it disappoints.
The game's focus is on private military missions in which you take control of one of two for-hire mercenaries - Elliot Salmen and Tyson Rios. As soon as the characters are introduced, you immediately become aware of how stereotypically American these brother's in arms are. They use "dude" constantly to refer to one another and often fist pound to congratulate one another on a job well done. While this certainly doesn't detract from gameplay, it presents a sense of disdain for the two as they both seem to embody the very sense of wrong attitude often accompanied with war by American youth. Perhaps it was intentional by the Canadian based studio to present an exaggerated perspective so it would resonate with players how we, as Americans, sometimes see war as a game to win more than a tragedy to avoid. However, it's more likely the 'heroes' of this title were a product of EA's American marketing division rather than a pseudo-intellectual cultural critique.
The controls of the game will be immediately familiar to Gear's of War players as the cover mechanic is largely the same. It mostly works to great effect, save for situations where tiny nuances (like being able to quickly switch from cover to cover) are non-existent. That said, aiming is accurate and the controls felt responsive for the most part. One of the 'innovations' the game touts in gameplay is the Aggro system - a system lifted from MMORPGs which allows a player to hold enemy attention by one player being more aggressive than the other. This creates situations where one player can hold enemy focus while another moves further position to flank, but this requires players to constantly work together to take down each set of enemies. After the 20th set of enemies, chances are, players will probably devolve into normal play-style of shoot everything that moves, nullifying the system. The only time when this system is truly enforced is when invulnerable enemy turrets appear, in which one player must distract the turret user while the other takes them out from an exposed angle.
Being that the game is co-op focused, single-player feels more like a side-show than the main attraction. While you can play this by yourself, the fun factor drops substantially as your computer AI counterpart continually runs into enemy fire like a moth to flame. The computer controlled player is functional enough to be a stand-in but acts more like a inadequate mobile turret than a strategic, war-honed killing mercenary. Like in Gears, you have some basic commands you can issue to your side-kick but these are largely worthless as the AI seems to have a mind of its own in most situations.
Co-op, however, is where the game's main design truly struts its stuff. Playing with two players is a blast, forcing players to work together to take down enemies. When one player is downed, the other must revive him before he bleeds out. Unlike Gears, however, the downed player is able to still shoot to help make the area safer for the player tasked with rescuing to gain access to. The attending player is also able to drag the wounded to safety to perform a quick 5 second maneuver for revival.
The enemy AI is challenging but largely this is due to their overwhelming numbers more than clever tactics. While the AI will occasionally rush for flanking positions they are more likely to retreat to further away cover causing artificially lengthy fire-fights. A sound effect let's you know when you've cleared the area, but often times it plays when enemies are still about, leading to untimely and undeserved deaths. This notification really should have been caught in QA before the game was released as it's rather pivotal to fluid gameplay.
Throughout the missions you travel to different parts of the world. Aircraft carriers, remote jungle villages, and office buildings are all par for the course. The environments feature some destructible objects (windows, largely) but mostly feel static. Level design is also incredibly linear, with very few places to explore outside of the main runway which you're expect to traverse.
One of the more interesting aspects of the game is the weapons dealers which can be accessed at certain points during missions. You can choose from a variety of them, each dealing in a specialized area of customization for your character. One sells mask designs (which seems like a rather dismal career in the black arms market), another special weapons such as sniper rifles and rocket launchers and others in more traditional gear. Weapons can be customized with increased magazine capacity, barrel length and better scopes. Laughably, each weapon also has a 'pimp' option to bling out the firearm, which adds extra aggro - presumably because enemies find it humiliating to be bullet ridden by a gold encrusted MP5. In any other game the pimp option would have been out of place, but strangely, in Army of Two, it's right at home.
Graphically the game looks stellar, with the main characters models stealing the show. The environment and enemies look great too, from the heavily armored foes right down to the politically incorrect middle-eastern suicide bombers. The frame-rate is rock solid for the most part and the game is a solid testament to how far next generation console gaming has come. Sounds are crisp, clean and generally lend themselves to whatever is occurring on-screen. The voice acting is a little over the top, from both the main characters and supporting cast, but this is a result of the ham-handed script the actors were given.
The story in Army of Two is serviceable but forgettable as well. The foreshadowing is as thick as it gets, with the secret protagonist being as subtle as a loud fart in an empty hallway. They should really employ Army of Two's plot prediction as an IQ test for being qualified as a sentient being, because if you can't predict this game's inevitable end within 5 minutes of it's opening story you're either a vegetable or mineral.
Overall, Army of Two is a mixed bag. It has great graphics, fun co-op gameplay and character customization which really adds value to the entire package. Detracting from the experience is it's clichéd, hokey story and extreme attitude, which seem almost offensive in a game revolving around for-hire killers.
"Great game but where is the rest?", This game is a great shooter when you have a friend to play it with. Playing the game by yourself isn't quite as fun but it isn't terrible. My only complaint about it is the game is too short to have much value. My friend and I beat the game on the Contractor difficulty in close to five hours. After that you can try on professional difficulty but it is the same game over again with the reward of unlocking the rest of the secondary and special weapons.
"REVIEW ON MY ORDER THAT I NEVER RECEIVED", Amazon is asking me to write a review on someting that I order A month ago and never received. Amazon please help me out here!...Somebody send me the game!!!!!
"Demo is all you need", This game is entertaining as it is meant for co-op. If you are playing by yourself, wait for gears of war 2 or just play gears of war over again. In the beginning of the game, the graphics and the gameplay was very entertaining. However, after 4 or 5 levels of the same thing without a decent storyline, the game gets extremely repetitive.
"Action all over", Army of Two certainly has a state of the art AI system and some stunning graphics, although it has some shortcomings in the storyline and multiplayer of the game. The story mode is fun but it ends a little too quickly and leaves out a few too many plot points. The online multiplayer was promising, but fell short of par. Its difficult to figure out how to do an online campaign, and the versus modes are more hype than reality. In a versus match you will see chaos everywhere and a constantly changing objective that is almost impossible to complete before it changes yet again. All in all its a fun game for a while, but quickly can become boring and old.
