"Civ Rules", Been playing Civ since the first edition back in the mid 90s when I bought my first puter. Love this game and Civ IV just proves that it's one of the best games ever! Sooner or later, I'll order Civ V, just haven't done it yet. Still having too much fun with IV and it's expansion.

"It's a lot of fun!", I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend's teenage boy. He couldn't quit playing it. He says its the best one yet.

"Fun game, annoying support", I bought the Gold edition and the Beyond the Sword expansion pack and overall I think this game is excellent when you are playing it. I really have to say it is addictive and as long as you are happy with the game right out of the box and assuming you are not the type of person to read the manual anyway you will love it.

Unfortunately it had a few shortcomings:
- documentation claimed that the full manual was on disc 3 (Gold) but at least on mine it wasn't there. I emailed support and they told me to go download it off some third party site. When I responded politely that they must be joking and they must have a pdf version of the full manual somewhere they sent me a link to a pdf of the full manual...who knows why they told me to go hunt one down myself the first time.
- when you go to download an update there is no progress bar so you sit there and wonder if it's almost done, how much longer, etc. The only way you know the update is still running is when you go to click on something else and it tells you that you may not proceed until the update is complete. It might take a really long time depending on how fast your connection is and you pretty much just sit there wondering.
- I checked out the website and it is pretty barren for such a great game, and you can find some of the links are broken on the website so it seems like they don't really maintain the site much.
- some parts of the game itself are somewhat clunky like the Civilopedia. It is pretty decent although they could have added more information to it and the interface for it is pretty poor. I wanted to know what caused the global warming effect and of course that wasn't in there so I ended up chasing down the full game manual just so I can find out what game effect made it (using nukes apparently).
- the only real game issue I had with it was when you get to the end of a game and just barely scratch the surface on super-tech things like space-elevators and interstellar spacecraft it's all over. Years ago I played the Call to Power game and the one thing that I loved about that game was the high-tech. Underwater cities, extreme eco-terrorists (I loved the ability to eco-nuke a city) and stuff like that. None of that here...at least yet (cross my fingers).

"Not as good as Civ 3", i would rather play Civ 3 than CivIV.I like the graphics better on Civ 3 better as well.Civ seems to have losts its way.

"Great game, wish I'd bought the Complete Edition", I got to this game a few years after it came out, but I am not at all dissapointed in the content. The only thing I wish is that I'd have bought the complete edition (which I didn't know existed), instead of buying this edition and Beyond the Sword separately.

"AWFUL", i loved playing civilization when i was a kid but omg all this time has passed and instead of using the technology they really moved back in time. the scenario in this game is so awfull that there is no way you can enjoy it. There are not a lot of improvements and the game is very stupid! definatly not worth the money. go buy age of empires, at least they have improved their games alittle

"A Giant Step Down", I was extremely disappointed in Civ IV compared to Civ II and III. Civ IV plays extremely differently than its previous versions. Did Sid have a conversion experience because Civ IV seems to be all about religion? I bought my computer a year ago and it wasn't a bare-bones model but the videos are choppy and the graphics are awful. So unless you have spent thousands of dollars on a sports car of computers, don't waste your money on this one.

"Civilization 4 Gold Edition", Great game with tons of replay value and endless components of strategy. You can never play the same game over again because of the randomness of the AI and how, with increasing difficulty, it seems as if they are ganging up against you, making it a wonderfully difficult experience.

"excellent", This is a superb visual and stunning achievement in gaming, with amazing flexibility of use! It's mods are myriad and removable, able to do just about anything. The units are more balanced and powerful than CIV III, and the governments seem to work better. I took me back to the enjoyable simplicity of the first CIV's, with available complexity that does not intrude, like specializations for units you can use or ignore. Very intuitive, even for a part-time gamer like myself. Highly recommended, Sid is back!

"Good as Gold", Civilization IV: Gold Edition is one of those rare gems that make you remember why you play games. For newcomers to the series, Civilization is a board game like strategy game-- just imagine Risk on steroids! The signature symptom of this series is the "just one more turn" factor. Civ gives you absolute control of one civilization throughout the ages. Discovering technology, managing cities, building world wonders, commanding armies, fighting other civs, and interacting with other world leaders through diplomacy, you need to guide your civilization from the stone age to the space age. When all's said and done you have a game that is part Risk, part sim-city, part Axis & Allies, and part Diplomacy, all done with the complicated parts kept track of by the computer. I've been a big fan of this type of game, having played Civ I, II, and III, although I fell out of the series on the 3rd title. Now Civ IV: Gold ups the ante over it's predecessors with new game mechanics, better 3D visuals, and more leaders, civs, and units than you can shake a stick at. Yet it retains the same addictive formula as the first iteration. Plus this Gold edition gives us the Warlords expansion. I have rekindled my love of this epic game and am quite pleased with the purchase. The only caveat, is that there's a Civ IV: Complete out there that also adds the Beyond the Sword expansion. Of course, having gotten Gold on sale, I just grabbed a separate copy of the BTS add-on to fuel my addiction. For the price, this is one of the best games to grace my hard drive in awhile.

Highlights include: the tabletop miniature style units that represent your armies; variety of victory conditions (space race, cultural, domination, etc); variety of civilizations and leaders complete w/ different bonuses/traits; bonus scenarios; turned based strategy at it's best. I highly recommend this game.
