Others say...
"Fun...but lacking...." The game is good. It has alot of customizable elements that make you get into the mode of "just one more level" that plagues all serious gamers.
What makes is fun is that you can loot and pillage with an army of underlings until your heart's content. You can build and upgrade your castle and own effects as you gain certain levels, equipment, and most importantly...gold.
The problem is that 90% of the upgrades to your castle do nothing. They're just asthetic value. And until you get the final forge, your weaponry is pretty worthless against some foes. And forget about harvesting the maximum amount of goblins, because that takes for-ev-er.
"Just plain fun." This game is quite a bit of fun considering it had little to no hype. That being said, I couldn't rate it very high without lying to myself about parts of the game clearly take from others. The game play is taken right out of Pikmin, but I personally find it to be more enjoyable than Pikmin, just as other will like Pikmin more than this. In my opinion the controls are more streamlined and easier to use than those from Pikmin, making the game a whole lot more enjoyable. As for the visuals and Audio, it all looks and sounds like it was ripped right from Fable for the original Xbox. Although the graphics are a bit shinier than those of Fable's, with a stronger frame rate. The twist to this game that I find refreshing is that you're evil, you can't choose sides between good and evil, you're just plain evil. The goblins that do your bidding are fantastic, and its fun just to watch them run through a town destroying everything in sight, then bringing you treasure and exclaiming "For you! My lord!". The humor is off and on, sometimes I found it to be pretty funny, and at other times I was wondering if it was written by toddlers. Overall I would say at least give the game a try, you may have an enjoyable time with it. Just don't expect anything truly innovative.
"Fun Game, but not Great" This game was a lot of fun to play, it is a little deceptive at first because its cartoon style makes it appear juvenile, but the content and gameplay is probably more suited for teen and older. The games puzzles aren't so hard that they distract from the gameplay, but they can be tedious and annoying. The gameplay is pretty fun, the combat style is a little different from most games of the genre, which keeps it interesting for a while. Overall, its a fun game, but it can be pretty silly. If cartoonish images and silly dialogue try your patience then I wouldn't reccomend it.
"Lord Dictator Supreem or just LordTader for short" Really fun game and I liked the fact that even though your an evil overlord they still let you choose to be good a lot. I would have to say it has an average replay value but they get kudos for just how fun and humorous it is.
"Initially fun, but lost its charm" A friend of mine had this game and I played at his house for a couple hours and found it extremely entertaining. I bought the game and played it pretty solidly for one weekend, logging somewhere between 12-16 hours of gameplay. From what I've heard, I think I was about halfway through the game when I tired of it.
Initially this game is really funny, but there's a limit to how many times I can hear one of the little minions say "for you master" or watch them destroy the same farmhouse and still chuckle. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan you might enjoy this game because it basically spoofs the entire thing from the evil side. You have hobbits who do nothing but drink and eat, elves who whine about their forest, and stereotypical drawves.
Gameplay is not horrible, but I often found myself frustrated once I unlocked all 4 types of minions. You have to control each of them one at a time, and while you can post a group in one place at a time and then move on to the next, I often found myself to preoccuppied with my own fights to concentrate on all the different minion groups, and hence some of them died over and over again. This can be frustrating because besides the initial type of mininion you have to go to special worlds to get them, which consumes a lot of time--especially if you're trying to rack up hundreds of a rare type of minion soul to make your armour really good.
That all might not make a lot of sense if you haven't played the game, but my overall advice is too rent first before buying--unless it's onsale for under 40.

What our customer's say!
"Unique and Amazing", My problem with the Xbox 360 is that it is difficult to find games that are not either First Person Shooters or 3rd person world domination shooters.
Enter Overlord, a completely unique game that immerses you in a creatively stunning land. While the goal is domination, the game play is quirky, fun, and you feel like you are exploring different worlds and are on a new adventure.
The game play, while it involves killing, seems to involve more strategy and rewards thoughtfulness over triggerpulling and destroying things.
A truly unique and fun adventure.
The one and only problem - don't save immediately after finishing the brewery.
"underated, great game", Most of the negative things the reviews had to say have been fixed with a patch, this game is great, like Pikmin with better graphics, story is actually funny and not tacked on, and I usually don't like Codemasters games. Great buy, especially at this price.
"Overlord? Overlard is more like it...", I really liked this game. Overall it was very entertaining and well worth $20. There were some funny parts but some of the repetitive sayings could get annoying. The peasants would say the same thing every time you walked past them and the first time I was very tempted to go evil and kill them to make them be quiet.
The main thing that bothered me was the lack of some type of map or even something telling me what direction I was walking. A few times a peasant would tell me something was going on to the east and I had no idea which way that was. It would also be nice to have a map that told the location of minions that were taking an object to one of the way points. They didn't always go to the closest one and when they didn't come back after a few minutes I would have to go find them. I also ended up wandering in circles several times and had to take the way point back to the tower so I could figure out where I was (assuming I could find a way point).
There were some glitches with the camera that always seemed to show up when I was fighting a large group of enemies. While attacking zombies I sent my guys out in several directions and my camera angle was swinging everywhere rather than following in the direction that the overlord was pointed. The camera also decided part way through the game to go to a bird's eye view and it took me a lot of fidgeting with the controls to get it back to where it was originally. I even resorted to reading the directions and it didn't cover how to reset it.
It would have been nice to have more upgrades available early on. I bought stuff for my tower after getting Rose and then had nothing to spend my money on for most of the game. I also didn't get the different smelters until pretty late and wasn't really excited about forging new things since I had been doing fine with the upgraded steel for so long.
I did think it was neat how there is small variation depending on if you go good/evil or evil/evil. You get different spells at the more advanced levels although I wish there had been more variation on the quests depending on which way you went.
I downloaded the expansion for xbox live and that added some entertainment as well although I still got lost in the new areas...
I highly recommend this game especially since it is now <$20. I am looking forward to Overlord II in 2009 and also think it is cool how they are making a different one for Wii than the other systems so I will definitely be getting both.
"dark but goofy", I bought it for my son, who had rented it several times. He enjoys it quite a bit. I don't buy very many games for him because he finishes them pretty quick most of the time. Rentals are the way to go most of the time. He enjoys it more than most. That speaks well of it for the most part. Online play is underwhelming, but works ok.
"Glitchlord", I think this game has alot of potential, and if it wasn't for all the glitches,I'd give this game a 5.
Three hours into the game, the camera angle becomes stuck to a bird's eye point of view and will not allow me to change it back.I can push the L button and use the thumbstick to move the camera back, but as soon as I let go,the camera swoops back up in the sky making the game awkward and ultimatly unplayable.
The game WILL NOT allow me to give the food back to the peasents. My minions will walk right up to the edge of where they are supposed to set the food and then stop. Thus,I HAVE to choose the evil option otherwise I can't continue on with the game.
Many times my minions become lost or stuck on objects;other times they just seem to disappear for no reason.
There are also other glitches I have read about online, most notably the game crashing bug of the dwarven brewery and teleporting rather than taking the elevator up.Supposedly this results in forever losing the spoke to the wheel and not being able to continue.
There is another glitch with Velvet if you power up your tower at a certain time...
This would be a perfect game if it weren't for all the glitches and bugs. Shame on the developers for not taking the proper time to test their product before releasing it to the masses.
As much as I would like to play through this game and see the ending, the countless mistakes in this game prevent me from doing so...
All hail the Glitchlord.

"Good Game - Fun", It's a good game - game me 20 hrs of fun.
It is not a serious game however, and content is pretty limited too. You play through a bunch of tasks one by one and that's about it. Navigating the maps was a bit of a headache - there is no map, you just walk around.
The content of the game was pretty limited too. I feel they could have added more fun content to the game, specially near the end of the game.
The controls are pretty simple and in general game was enjoyable. I would definitely recommend buying it.
"A Game worth buying", Well I just finished this game today and I actually was impressed. The ending wasn't the best in the world but the actual game is good. I have to admit if this game didn't have the minions it wouldn't have been that great. The only major flaw was that the game didn't have a map; so I ran around in circles and got lost numerous times. This is a good game and actually worth buying if you like this kind of game.
"Non Review --- but with a short word of advice.", Game: Not my thing.
My Advice: Whenever possible gamers should take advantage of the free game demo downloads available on Xbox Live before spending the cash for a game that may be lacking. I tried the demo to this game and knew quite quickly that this would not be a game that I would enjoy. I mean, seriously, if the game makers can't put their title's best foot forward in a short playable demo then the full game is not likely to be good either.
Save money for good games.
"For the Master", Overlord
This is an absolute hoot, the first time through, on the second go round it loses a bit of its luster.
You are the Overlord, recently resurrected from an apparently extremely nasty "accident", your faithful minions (and I DO mean faithful) have "cleaned up" what's left of a ruined tower and are ready and willing to do your bidding.
Controls are different and take some getting used to. Directed with the thumb sticks you can control either the Overlord or his minions, but without a camera control it makes searching and seeing where you are going a tad difficult.
You use the minions (four types) to reach areas and battle enemies you can not. Direct your minions to loot, smash, maim, destroy and in general wreck havoc upon unsuspecting villagers and baddies. Armed with an ax, you too, can join the fun. Low on health? Sacrifice the little buggers. It's OK, really, they don't mind and you can always summon up some more when you've gone through the current supply.
Up on your pop culture references? Good. Overlord has them in spades, right down to a well known and beloved Shire.
The minions are a riot! Watch as they don pumpkins for helmets, chase and pester sheep, break open boxes and fight over the contents, "That's mine!" "For you, Master!" "I got pasta!" "I drank it" (They like beer, beware). I was fully expecting Dwight Frye to appear (heh, heh, heh, the original Renfield of Dracula). They must have molded the minions after him!
There is one tiny tiny problem, there is no map. NO MAP! There is a useless paper one in the box, but it does nothing! That is the one flaw in the game, you cannot see where you're going nor where you have been. Bad game design, shame on them! If you want me to get there, you need to tell me or at least let me see where I am and where I'm headed. Who was the idiot that thought that was a smart idea?
Play it, play it, play it! I gave it a three due to the sort of non-re-playability.
"Take a spin... on the Evil side", Most of the time I do not have a chance to play a game all the way through... so a game like this really helps to make the time I do have enjoyable. Fun and easy to play and if you like smashing things to pieces... your type of game...
