Others say...
"Stress-Free Budgeting" I had been a satisfied Quicken user for the last two years, until earlier this year when my Quicken told me to upgrade to 2008 or else they'd turn off my financial downloads. I don't respond to coercion very well, so I said "f*** this" and started looking at alternatives. I first came across mentions of You Need A Budget on Quicken 2008 reviews as an alternative. Googled reviews for it and found some rave reviews from personal finance bloggers (just google "You Need A Budget review"), so I became intrigued and tried it out.
This software is helpful for getting out of debt, saving money, and stop living paycheck to paycheck, though I didn't need help with any of those things. The only debt I have is a student loan with about $8000 left at less than 2% interest. I have savings about twice that, and I live well within my means. However, I wanted to get back in touch with my budgeting because I mainly do it in my head, and it can get stressful because I "budgeted" by limiting my expenses at all times. I was more in touch when I used to budget in Excel, and got lazy when I started using Quicken.
What really excites me about YNAB is the ability to plan for future expenses by budgeting them for them NOW - e.g. set aside $100 a month for your semi-annual car insurance premiums, or for an upcoming vacation. Basically you can save up money for a future expense, or just increase your savings. When I saw this section in the video tutorials on the YNAB website, I was sold on the spot -- this meant that I no longer have to keep such things in my head or cringe at my credit card bill when a big expense was due. Yes, you could build an excel spreadsheet to do the same thing, but this program just makes things more convenient. When I started using YNAB, it was such a relief because it took my budget out of my head and down "on paper", so I no longer have to think about it! Of course, if you're trying to discipline yourself and get out of debt, you're not likely to have that same experience.
I find that I still like to keep all my financial accounts in one place and updated. I use Yodlee (yodlee.com) for this purpose. YNAB does keep a register of all your accounts and balances, but it doesn't show your net worth. Yodlee does for free everything I did with Quicken, which was keep all the account balances in one place and tell me how much money I spent.
**A helpful note for those who want to try YNAB - don't try to import several years' worth of financial data into YNAB. You could, but it's tedious and pointless. YNAB has a different philosophy from mainstream personal finance software, and it's not about tracking what you spent and when - it's about planning for future expenses. Read some of the creator's blog on the product website, which will explain more. You will have more fun with the program once you get over trying to use it like a mainstream product.
"Over a year now" I bought YNAB over a year ago. With other budgeting software, I would go gung ho for about 2 months and either get bored or get overwhelmed. I LOVE YNAB! Our family finances are in much better shape, even with a bunch of unexpected hospital bills. I love being able to budget for Christmas and life insurance through the year, so when those former budget busters show up, I've got the money sitting there. I highly recommend this product!!!! I also recommend you read through the company website to get a better idea of the way it's set up-- you can also look through the forums or ask a question there if you get stuck.
"Are the reviews stage co. marketing" The text and info provided in a number of the reviews read like insider information with an objective of selling the product. we need reviews from objective everyday customers.
"YNAB Pro Rocks" Not combersum at all, way easier to use than any of the other commercial packages to use. There is some really good stuff, to learn and to use within this software package. It can change your life, the best money that I have spent online ever.
Go on what are you waiting for, look at the price. Worth it for a bit of financial freedom?
"Finally I can Budget" I'm a college student so budgeting is kinda hard for me. I went on Amazon and read about this product YNAB and thought it was cool. It was very simple and easy to install don't even need internet for that. The only confusing part to me was creating a split bill, other than that you simply put down your income and expenses and budget them into categories that you can monitor to understand how much your spending and where your money is going. This software has a unique feature that you won't find in other software the theme is to budget a certain amount for a month and survive on those dollars alone, which really makes you manage your money more efficiently.

What our customer's say!
"Not sure why this is #1", Im not sure why this budget software is number one on amazon. I bought it because the reviews said it was great and was better then quicken and money. I thought I would recieve it in a box with directions on how to use it. Nope. All I got was a DVD case with a number sticker on the front of the plastic wrap that I almost threw away (it didnt say that it was important to using it until I installed it). Then once I had it installed I had to go on the website and down load the upgraded version because it wasnt the newest or whatever. It was $5 so I did it anyways. Didnt notice a difference. There were no directions on how to use the thing. There is a help section that you can print out on your own printer (paying for your own ink and paper) that is about 100 pages long. Yes it is simple...very simple almost to plain for me. The register didnt work with downloading from my bank online so i input everything by hand. The budgeting tool is a joke. when you enter a about you buget for it puts you in the negitve and it is all very confusing...would help if it came with directions. I find it a waste of my money and I wish I could return it. Most pointless 40 bucks I have ever spent. I wish I would have tried money at least it has been around a while. In the "help section" it sounds as if it was designed in someones garage with the opening letter from the creator. Long story short...save your money and try something that have been around a little longer.
"The best budgeting methodology out there", I've used Quicken for over 10 years (and still do) but Quicken (and similar personal finance software) is absolutely incapable of doing budgeting. YNAB does budgeting beautifully and fills this glaring gap. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because YNAB reporting capabilities are very limited.
"Waste of money", This is the most stupid and useless software I have ever seen. Don't waste your money.
"Software & Methodology in one package!", I found this software through a budgeting forum, and tried it out. I wasn't expecting much - I've used an Excel spreadsheet, Quicken & Mvelopes before, and didn't have much "success" with them. Those programs worked fine, but I needed to BUDGET my finances, not track where I spent my money after the fact. So, I bought this program, and after a bit of reading (there's a great guide) and surfing their forums for help, I got it figured out! Now, I've got my life budgeted - I can spend money on the fun things in life without worrying that I'm taking money away from something important (you know, like mortgage, car loan, etc.) because I saved for it.
Just a FYI - because the program is based off of the common sense "rules" that the developer created, it might take a bit before you have that lightbulb moment... And, the program isn't designed to let you blissfully automate your spending - you NEED to track your money, and be more aware if you're going over your budgeted amounts.
"Simple and Effective", I bought YNAB Pro about 2 weeks ago after being a long-time Quicken user so this review is not based on extensive use of the software at this time. However, I'm not new to financial/budgeting software. I've tried out several. I liked all the bells and whistles of Quicken, but it wasn't working for me as a budgeting tool as it only shows you where you're money went. Quite frankly their budget set-up interface left a lot to be desired, only allowing you to create a general monthly budget.
With YNAB, I was up and running within a few minutes, and after playing with all the features to see what it could do, I was fully loaded with a budget and bank transactions within twenty minutes. It is the most user friendly software I've ever encountered. The YNAB website has comprehensive advice and How-To's in the forums, VIDEO How-To tutorials AND a users manual in PDF format. If that's not enough "Help" you can post a question to forums OR contact the seller via the website.
I have encountered no issues with downloading bank transactions or issues of any other kind. However, if for some reason you're not happy with YNAB there is a 60 day money-back guarantee. ALSO, you will get any future software updates for free. No yearly upgrade fees and YNAB never becomes an obsolete software as so many do. It is a one-time purchase that will last you the rest of your life.
Do not mistake YNAB as a financial tracking system; if that's what you're looking for don't buy it.
YNAB is a hard-core, balls to the wall BUDGETING tool for planning your monthly expenses with the sole purpose of getting a grip on your out of control spending so you can begin saving money and basically build up that nice nest egg; creating financial stability and freedom in your life. This is not for the wishy-washy, faint of heart person who thinks a software application is going to miraculously "fix it". It's for the person who seriously wants to make changes in their spending habits and is willing to work at it. YNAB is the best friend you'll ever have if this is your goal.
The very best feature of this software, in my opinion, is it's ability to be 100% personally customized to your unique budgeting needs. You can add, delete, and rename categories and sub categories as you wish. You do not have to wade through a bunch of pre-determined expense categories to get to the ones that matter to you. Other great features is the bank transaction downloading, transaction scheduler, and the ability to transfer funds from one account to another within the budget. The methodology behind the software is not difficult to understand, but sheer common sense.
Oh, I've never met the software creator or anyone else involved in the YNAB creation. I am a mere consumer who purchased the software and am currently using it.

"I think it stinks... ", I didn't find the software as user friendly as Money and/or Quicken. In fact, I have returned using Money. This software is very confusing to use and when you download your bank file, you have to FIND your data file and import it. It does not automatically import your file like Money does. If you have several accounts, you have to be careful not to download another file without first saving you file, example, say you are working with you saving account, finish and begin downloading data to your checking. This program opens up a new window, if you close the window you were working on your savings account with, you will loose your data. A software program should help you work smarter, not harder.
"YNAB Pro: Saved my financial life!", I can't help but gush about You Need A Budget Pro. This software has helped me go from being in debt to living financially free. The envelope budgeting system teaches you to live based on what you have already made, instead of budgeting, spending, exceeding your budget, then stressing about money.
"Useful but not intuitive", As someone who has not budgeted before, I find this software great for showing me where my money really goes, but I don't find it intuitive to use.
Pros: - It is easy to enter in or download income and expenditures - It shows nifty bar and pie graphs of my expenditures by month - It made me look ahead and budget this month for future anticipated expenditures (e.g. 6 mo car insurance).
Cons: - I find the budgeting portion of the software confusing and not intuitive. - The graphs are not interactive and have so many subcategories that it is difficult to see trends over time.
On the whole I am glad I bought the software, but I still have dedicated more time to figuring it out than I would of liked.
"Goodbye Quicken - Hello simplicity", I've used Quicken for a few years, but I've always been frustrated with the annual/biannual upgrade costs and the lack of a real budgeting function. My wife and I have taken Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University class and we love the envelope budgeting concept, but neither of us liked the idea of carrying around (and probably losing) that kind of cash. We also wanted to be able to build up money for annual or semiannual expenses (Christmas, insurances, etc.), but couldn't find an easy way to track that money so it would get lumped into general spending most of the time. For a while, I learned to write macros in Excel and started creating my own envelope system spreadsheet, but I was always searching for something else to make things simpler. I looked at Mvelopes - way too expensive, Budget by Snowmint - close, but I liked YNAB Pro better, and I spent way too much time trying to use subaccounts, classes, and other little tricks to make Quicken budgeting act like an envelope budget.
Apparently the Quicken 2008 will allow for a more envelopish budgeting experience, but I'm not going back. Why would I? With YNAB Pro I can import any file type possible - OFX, QFX, QIF, CSV, whatever. Quicken limits me to just one file type which some local banks I've used may or may not support. Also YNAB Pro is a ONE TIME EXPENSE with lifetime upgrades - all for less than the cost of an upgrade to Quicken.
YNAB Pro is a fantastic BUDGETING program. When it comes down to it, that's what I need - help controlling my spending so I can get out debt and out of the rat race sooner rather than later.
"Great!!", This makes budgeting easy for those who aren't the financial software gurus of today. This is simple, works great and is genuinely useful for those of us who can't figger out why the money ain't there that should be!
