Others say...
"Shop around before buying this one" Set up and installation on this product is not worth the time and effort (I had to return it). You might want to consider a Buffalo Link Station if your looking for a network storage system (set up and operation is smooth as silk).
"great but slow" i love the ftp server on this, i can access files anywhere i go super easy, and share with my friends too. on the home network its a little slow putting the files on the box, but streaming them to my computer, apple tv, or ps3, they work just fine.
"Doesn't live up to its promise" This unit sounds good on paper, but I've been less than pleased. The first install had problems forcing a call to tech support. The second install seemed to go OK, but the computers on my network can't always see the unit. I think there may be some problems with Vista compatibility. No instructions for how to set up remote access over the web.
"No one has talked about noise..." This product is slow, on a 100 mbps network it can only manage at best speeds that are around a attached USB drive. Might as well just get USB enclosures, as most of them are far less noisy.
I found this thing had little insulation, placing the drives next to each other, I found their noise was intolerable, especially since it did nothing to hide the high-pitched SATA whine.
I have gotten other drive enclosures from Western Digital(SATA-only) that are very quiet and faster than this is on the network.
The streaming media server is a joke and trying to mount a network drive and watch a TV show or movie stored there causes errors, even Itunes mounted onto that drive kept crashing due to drive timeouts.
It works as a backup, but as a actual attached storage it doesn't move fast enough to work with files in any real way.
"Find a better solution" This is good for some basic storage, but it falls short on performance of any kind. I get better file transfer from computer to computer than to this hard drive storage. Latency is also a major factor with this solution. When copying large amounts of data for backups, this system will often hang and stop copying.
Linksys Network Storage System with 2 Bays (NAS200)
I am thinking of replacing this item due to these issues and will be evaluating other systems. It is a great concept that I would like to have but lacks performance to the point of not usable.

What our customer's say!
"Network storage", Slower transfer speeds than I expected. Can't really stream information (songs to the TV). ITunes doesn't like having its directory mapped to it. Relegated it to a back up unit with dual 500GB drives.
"Slow start-up", It takes around 3min to start up. I found that while network interface is already up (ping goes), the web-interface and accessing filesystem (net use..) still does not work and I have to wait several minutes until beep signals it is ready. Maybe I do something wrong? I am going to contact their support.
The rest is OK (although transfer speed could be better than 3MB/s )
"Works good for me", I read a lot of bad reviews before I bought my network storage system and came to the conclusion that there were three types of people writing bad reviews. The first type is the computer master we all know that a 12 tech week class back in 1985 means that not only can you work your Wang (for those of you that weren't born yet a Wang was a computer back in the 80's) but your level of computer knowledge is far too great to read any type of directions. The second person is the person who has no technical knowledge at all. If installing a printer took two days and required four phone calls then you will probably be in over your head. The third type of person is the person that expects too much. As far as I know THIS PRODUCT WILL NOT!! Cure cancer, grow hair or help you lose weight. I didn't need it to do any of those I just wanted to store files and be able to retrieve them from any computer. That it does well. Computers on my network up and down load at about 4mps and from the internet at about 100kbs. I wish the transfer rate was I little faster on the internet but there are some other things that factor in to that speed that the device has no control over. Over all it just does what I bought it for. Make sure you follow the directions and if it doesn't work check the directions one more time because you probably missed something.
"Great Home Network NAS", I purchased this unit to replace the Netgear SC101. This unit is considerably faster with more features and does not need it own drivers on the PC like the SC101 did. The NAS can be configured to use USB drivers however, any drive used with this device must be formatted in the NAS proprietary format. This means that you can not put the drive in a PC and read the contents. This seems to be a standard with most of these kind of devices. Not a big problem unless the device fails and you want to get your data off and don't want to buy a like device.
The NAS is easy to setup and has a nice web configure page. I recommend this device as it is great for the price.
"Ok for the budget-minded", I got the NAS200 as my first NAS device and as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. The set up is fairly trivial, I was able to get a RAID1 with share going in less than an hour (the majority of time being taken up by drive formatting). Unfortunately, the performance is atrocious, not even measuring up to what I'd expect from 100BaseT. If you want simple, relatively cheap network storage with no expectations of real time stream, fine. But if you're wanting something with more oomph, look elsewhere.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Ideal remote backup", Since buying the NAS200, it took me about two hours to get it fully set up as the remote FTP driven back up for my company. Using SmartFTP in the office to update changed files only, I now have a secure off site backup, mirrored with 1Tb of space. It took me a while to work out the router forwarding (hint, most routers have dyndns and forwarding support these days, program a fixed IP onto your NAS200 then forward FTP ports to that IP, you don't need to use the NAS200's own service at all).
Generally very happy with the unit.
"Reliable", I battled a bit with this product at first then realized it was my network causing the problem not the NAS200. I have a RAID 1 with 2 500GB drives & 2 USB drives on it and I am vary happy with the speeds I see. I use the web access to get to my files off the internet which is really nice. Only suggestion, put it on a UPS. It does not like power failures...
"Quirks Make It Less Useful Than Expected", I bought this to provide RAID 1 backup storage for our entire home, have a central location for email access and other user files, and to be a network server for my external USB drives. While I was able to get the unit running, there were a few hitches that I would have liked to know prior to purchase:
1) The unit access is slow. Many people have mentioned this before but I thought it was just for large file transfers, which I could have lived with. Just accessing the drive, though, is painful. For example, when I try to access the drive in Vista it takes 30-45 seconds before the drive comes up. Very annoying. I was going to transfer all user folders (Desktop, Documents, etc) to the NAS200 but I would expect system performance to grind to a halt if I had to wait for access each time I changed the desktop or edited documents. I'll probably just move the Pictures and Downloads folders out to the drive for now.
2) The USB ports only support read-only access if the external drive is formatted to NTFS. Why they wouldn't make the unit capable of writing to NTFS drives is beyond me. Since I couldn't find this shortcoming in the manual I did some research and found that to write to USB drives they have to be pre-existing FAT/FAT32 drives or formatted by the NAS200 (it formats to FAT32). Since I have 1.5 TB of storage on two external USB drive arrays formatted to NTFS having to empty, reformat, then copy back to the drives is a major undertaking.
After finding these things out I'm now looking for another storage solution for my primary network storage device and will plug my two USB arrays into that. I'll then end up using my NAS200 for secondary storage of critical items or folders that are not accessed frequently. If I get any other external drives, I can then use the NAS200 to format those. I know that some groups out there are working on hacks like they have for the NSLU2 but I prefer my products to work out of the box and not require me to rewrite the firmware to get them to work right.
"Slooooooooooooowww", If you want to store data and not care how long it takes to retrieve...or if you want to transfer data at modem speeds this is for you.
I returned mine.
"Cheap Price, Cheap performance", I researched a lot of home NAS devices, and eventually decieded based on price. This unit was the cheapest, and had the funtionality I needed. However, performance was very poor, probalby due to the low power CPU the unit has.
A unit like this would be great for storing backups, etc (items you dont use very often), but for music/video/sentralized storage, I'd NOT recommend this produnt.
