"Dexter, season one"
This review is not about the show itself, others have already commented on that and I can't really add anything that they haven't said, it's just a primo show. This review is on the product of the Season One dvd set. 12 episodes on 4 discs and then some bonus features on disc four which includes the first few episodes of "Brotherhood" and a real life blood splatter mini documentary. As for the rest of the set, the main menus are pretty cut and dry with episode lists and audio setup. Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere to turn on subtitles/captioning for those few hard to hear moments. The discs are one sided with selected stills of Dexter facing up on the discs. So for the set itself, a good strong 4 stars but only due to the lack of captioning. For the show itself, top notch 5 stars.

"Technical Fail"
Say what you like about the show, this is a mention of the bad technical quality of the discs.

I just finished watching Season 1, Disc 1. I won't be watching the rest. While the "English 5.1 Surround" soundtrack seems fine, here are some critiques of the rest:

* The "English Stereo" soundtrack is reversed. Everything that should come from the left comes from the right, and vice-versa. So, in episode 4, where his girlfriend comes to visit dressed as Lara Croft, she knocks on the door on the right, and the sound comes from the left. Only on this track, that is. Spanish "mono" and English 5.1 have the sounds in the correct places. I found that out after swapping cables, thinking that my system was hooked up incorrectly.

* The "Spanish Mono" soundtrack is actually stereo. That's a good thing, - the bad thing is that they didn't have the technical proficiency to identify it correctly as such. I used the Lara Croft example above to verify that.

* The disc claims to be an NTSC region 1 disc, but it actually has no region coding, which means it works just fine on my Region 2 Pioneer combi-player.

* The 3D graphics in the menu are awful.



"Ya Gotta Love Dexter"
Great story line! Excellent Cast! The series is so well written. If you enjoy building a library of TV series on DVD, this is a must have. If you have never seen the show before, it's a "gotta see", start with season 1 and enjoy. It's weird to tell yourself you like this Dexter character and your pulling for him and some how justifying in your head it's okay to like a "serial killer", ya know, he does have a "code".

this first series has 2 dvd's. i'm on dvd numero uno, and savoring it. will watch numero dos soon...

"As Good as TV Gets"
I never have time to watch television shows when they air throughout the week, so this wave of TV-on-DVD has been great for me. Normally, I purchase one of these DVD sets and it takes me a couple of months to finish the contents. Not the case with Showtime's Dexter.

I had initially rejected the idea of this show. I'm not one for excess gore or the glorification of killing you find in some horror movies these days. I approached the series apprehensively, but once I started I was hooked. The concept of the series (a man addicted to killing) reminded me of the premise behind the Kevin Costner film Mr. Brooks, only Dexter targets criminals to fuel his addiction. And, well, this television series works better than that film.

Dexter is a forensics tech for the Miami PD, and the length of Season One deals with his interaction with a serial killer who becomes known as "the Ice Truck Killer." The story arc sets off from the conclusion of Episode One, and it never lets up. There's mystery, intrigue, and, thanks to his incredibly foul-mouthed sister Debra (also a cop), comedy.

This is a great show that would catch any willing viewer's attention. Personally, I didn't find it all that gory. There is a lot of killing, but the actual deed isn't shown. Still, it's a dark show that won't be a cup of tea for the light-hearted.

Overall, Season One of Dexter is TV at its finest and highly deserving of 5/5 stars.
