"His country forsook him, but he never forsook his country" The film opens with two US troops being abandoned by their commander. They are not in authorized space. When asked why, the commander said something to the effect that the men were well trained and they would find their way home.
We know one of them did, because we see him years later. Bob Lee Swagger (Wahlberg) has nearly gone off the grid. It's just him and his dog living in a remote cabin.
When he's approached by Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) to help foil a plot to kill the US President by determining how the shooter is going to do it, he reluctantly accepts the job.
When the fated day arrives, it's actually the Archbishop of Ethiopia who is shot and the crime's blamed on Swagger. Swagger goes on the run, trying to find out precisely what happened.
"Shooter" is a smart paced and intelligent conspiracy thriller taken from the pen of Stephen Hunter. Excellent acting on the part of the whole crew. This multi-faceted film is well worth owning. You will want to see it again.
Rebecca Kyle, December 2008
"What Were They Thinking?" I almost didn't write a review for this film since there are already plenty of bad reviews here. I have a major gripe with Hollywood these days. Movies like Shooter are happening all too frequently. This movie could have been good, but it is not. How did they get Mark Wahlberg, Danny Glover, and Ned Beatty to make this movie? Ok, Glover and Beatty are probably just happy to be working, but that doesn't excuse Wahlberg.
This movie makes Rambo look realistic. If you are able to throw out reason, don't particularly care about a plot or story line, and enjoy watching a one man army, you might enjoy this movie. The government "bad guys" (Glover and Beatty) are so over the top it's nearly comical. Actually it's rather sad to see real talent wasted like this. How does a movie like this even get made? There is no difference between Shooter and some straight to video low budget shoot-em-up staring no-names. If only the movie would have been scaled back and feature realistic dialog and situations, it might have been interesting. Unless Amazon sells this movie for $1, it isn't worth the price.
"Why did I wait soooo long.... **spoilers**" Well, I just saw The Shooter and I must say, why did I wait soooo long?? Great movie from beginning to end. Mark Wahlberg turns in a solid performance along with an excellent ensemble cast. Had me on the edge of my seat from the sort of botched, attempted assasination to cold blooded revenge in the end. Damn, doesn't it feel good when the good guys win!!! OOOOOOHAAAA!!!
"GOOD ACTION FLICK" LOTS OF FUN A GOOD ACTION FLICK MW IS GOOD IN IT AND LIKE HIS MOVIE GIRLFRIEND
"Shooter review" A veteran double crossed by the government during his early military career is used once again in this fast paced action flick. The unsuspecting soldier is talked into helping 'prevent' the assassination of a president, but things are not what they seem and he's roped into a deep conspiracy. Now he must run for his life while he tries to find a way to reveal the truth. I could slightly guess the formula and where it was leading on this one, but still enjoyed the action packed story.

What our customer's say!
"Positive review", I need to add a positive review for this movie. It was definitely my second favorite movie of 2008 (I liked Saw V better). This movie has a lot of action and explosions in it and kept me wondering until the end. I really like Walberg and he does not disappoint in this movie.
"Great American Action Movie!", This was a great action movie that makes you feel good about being an American. And you get to see lots of shooting and destruction. What's not to love?
"Bad Bourne", This was a decent shoot em up flick. I gave it 4 stars because I can still recall the plot-so many are forgetable. Its a bad attitude Bourne type movie and I liked Walberg as lead. If you liked Last Man Standing and Reindeer Games, type of off beat rough; you will probably like this. Not warm-Not fuzzy.
"Great movie!", This is NOT my usual genre, but I got coaxed into watching it and was very impressed with both Mark Wahlberg and the movie. It was a bit more graphic than I am comfortable with, but I closed my eyes a lot. I was enthralled from the opening frames until the end. I highly recommend it!
"Ridiculously implausible but it has nice, big explosions", The notion that some dark elements would attempt to kill a foreign official while a few feet away from the US president and try to get away with murder by framing some experienced, combat tested sniper who was fooled into believing that he was really doing a feasibility study of whether the president could be killed by pointing a sniper rifle at him from a mile away... you got the idea?
And it's getting worse from there. While nearly fatally wounded, our hero loses about 5000 FBI, Secret Service and regular cops, all hot on his tail, then he comes back to kill everyone guilty... Oh well, the cable channels need movies to kill some time, I suppose.
And, one more thing. Why would anyone ever want to build an oil pipeline through Ethiopia? The correct answer is "no one would". Ethiopia is bordered by Somalia (hostile), Eritrea (hostile), Kenya (has no oil) and Sudan (has oil but also has hundreds of miles of Red Sea shore and has no need for an Ethiopian pipeline, passing through its rebellious South.
Why 2 stars? I suppose it's because it has a couple of well-known actors, there are some nice, very large explosions and because it's good to see corrupt politicians receive their well-deserved punishment but, overall, watching this movie is wasting one's time.

"You're on target to lose 125 minutes of your life.", Rented this to counter-balance wife's choice of "What Happens in Vegas" (that was better than expected). That the people who produced this "hit piece" were going to ignore facts and try to brow beat you into believing their "anti-America, anti-Republican" message.
SPOILERS: It begins with a sniper team (supposedly Marines) covering an extraction team. The spotter takes the time to gaze at a picture of his cute wife and ponder the ethics and purpose of their mission while they literally chew their cud. The action starts with Mark Wahlberg knocking off targets with casual ease but when a larger force "appears" they call for backup; especially when the bad guys manage to set up mortars ranged onto their position instantaneously. At the Army base, some civilian pulls the plug on the supposedly covert operation by saying that they will get out on their own and to break camp immediately. The spotter gets gunned down by a helicopter (Why are they always making runs rather than hovering?) Oh whoa is "Swagger" (why not just name the character Johnny Bigc*ck?). Suddenly it's three years later and Swagger has hair longer than my mother, living in the rugged Northwest. Danny Glover sets him up by telling him that he alone can help them counteract a threat against the president in a manner that'll leave your four year old scratching their head. Swagger is referred to as a Sgt., SSgt. and a Gunny, throughout the film; supposedly he "retired" right after he got back to the States. WTF? The movie quickly dissolves into a farce in which characters are made to do one thing one scene and another the next without any logical connection. Non-subtle digs at Republicans (Presidential portraits in Glover's "office"), the current administration ("They thought there were WMD's in Iraq!" one character quips), "Big Oil" (that first operation was to cover a group of "contractors" killing off a village that refused to move when "we" decided to run a pipeline through their location), corporations ("There's no head [of the bad guys] to cut off. It's a corporation.") and the military (I hope there wasn't any military advisor on this POS as they'd likely now be suicide candidate). The ridiculousness reaches higher and higher as the film goes on... Swagger easily evading capture from countless law enforcement types in broad daylight, running a straight line across open fields without getting hit by whithering gunfire (ala' Arnold in "Commando"), going MacGuyver in local supermarkets, repulsing two cops and their German Shepard like Jason Bourne but with the added kicker of sticking one cops' arm into the jaws of the attacking dog! A certain amount of belief needs to be suspended when watching any movie, I know, but we're supposed to buy into the notion that Swagger's dead partner's wife is a hot, young thing that is a single school teacher in fictitious Keen, KY after three years, wears skimpy clothes when answering the door and can perform surgery (despite the fact that becoming a nurse was her dead husband's dream, not hers due to a dislike of the sight of blood!). The "hero-done-wrong" in these type movies always receive supporting aid and in this one it's provided by an at first bumbling FBI agent who then is an authority on ancient battlefield medical remedies and later, with a quick flashbang lesson, is, Ta-Da! a sniper, too!!!
I could not stand the headache this garbage pile brought on, went to the head and promptly produced something better. Before this, "Independence Day" (which I walked out of the theater on) was one of the worst assaults upon my intelligence. "Enemy State" ranked right up there though fortunately that was rented and quickly returned. This puts everything this movie-lover has seen to shame. I can not explain how any enjoyment could be experienced from watching this but if there was, then the makers of this film were at least partly correct: the common American is stupid, gullible and easily lead around by the nose.

"Amazing Adventure Political Thriller", This is a great film. Mark Wahlberg is always reliable for turning in a quality performance so sometimes he can be taken for granted. Remember how he shocked everyone with his excellent performance in Boogie Nights? Well here he possesses an amazingly strong constant presence that never lets up. He is an action adventure superstar.
The simple basis of the plot is that he is a shooter for the war/government in retirement and is called upon to undertake a special mission. That is all I will say for nothing else about this movie is simple.
The movie is a high octave full force action thriller and the action sequences are amazing lighting up the screen. There is graphic violence but it is very well executed and fits the format of the film. It is not gratuitous. The film is also a thriller with a strong political edge. How all this mixes together so expertly is due to the true craftsmen who have put this film together. And Wahlberg allows the strong esemble cast to shine and does not try to steal the show even though it is totally his.
This movie literally blew me away. I really did love it. It is over 2 hours in length and the time flew by with action and shocks and plot twist too many to mention. Highly recommend.
"If you liked Mark Wahlberg in the Bourne Films, You will like this movie", If you liked Mark Wahlberg in the Bourne movies, you will most likely enjoy this movie. It is action packed and movies quickly except for a few preachy moments at the end. As a person who has enjoyed long range target shooting and am familiar with the Barret 50 Cal capabilities, I know that the shots in this film were all realistic.
"Hollywoodimess Turkeyanus", "The Shooter" is a movie obviously intended for 15 y.o. schoolboys and Michael Moore/Oliver Stone aficionados. It is truly the worst movie that I've seen in some time. It relies entirely on old Hollywood standbys--fatal wounds that the hero recovers from; car chase scenes; heroes that never miss; bad guys who always miss; sinister government plots; sinister FBI characters etc.
It's an Oliver Stone film on crack. There are echoes of "JFK" i.e. the three guys on the grassy knoll are buried in Terlingua. "Hey, I've still got the shovel!" There are even echoes of the Ruby Ridge massacre. Our 'hero' is living way out in the woods. The FBI shoots his dog. Man, man, man, really original stuff.
The plot is far too complex, far too complex to follow, but, not to worry, the director explains it in the end. The government killed 400 villagers in Ethiopia so that an oil pipeline could go through [get that, folks, evil oil]. Now we don't quite know why they were killed but apparently it's so other villagers will get the message and just get up and move away. Logical. Our hero and his shooter friend, shoot Ethiopian retaliation forces but of this I was never clear. Maybe they were they were shooting the bad guys who did the village murders and our hero, in turn, murders them as a cover-up. Not to worry. Our hero doesn't know who he's shooting, either, and, the government, rather than extract or heroes, shoots them up with a helicopter and his friend is killed. Of course, as we are watching all this we have no clue as to what's happening...we have to wade through hours and hours of this turkey dreck hoping that maybe somebody will make sense of it. Truly, they never really do.
Our hero, after his return, is intelligently employed to detect a long range sniper trying to kill the President. It's at an outdoor Presidential review featuring the archbishop of Ethiopia [is there an archbishop of Ethiopia?]. Boom! Goes a shot which we learn later, deliberately misses the President and kills the Ethiopian. Perfect good sense. Suddenly the cops are shooting our hero--again, we have no way of knowing why. Despite the fact that the hero is shot through the axillary artery, which would have killed him in minutes, and through the gut, which would have disabled him in hours, and killed him in a day or two, our super-hero soldiers on to kill thousands and thousands of bad guys [make that agents and U.S. soldiers] with rifles, pistols, machine guns, garrots, karote and miscellaneous bombs.
Wow!!! What a guy! And he does all this while mumbling his lines which adds to the mystery of the whole thing.
Now, a word for the writers, directors and producers, if they ever read these things. Why in H... can't you use just a tad of originality? Why does it always have to be all this Hollywood BS and tripe? Are you imbeciles or just younger than 22? Do you still have problems with acne? Who are you going to vote for in November? Yeah, I know, it's just a joke. The whole stinkin' thing is a joke. Get your stuff together, boys and girls. You have nothing to lose but your American Civil Liberties card.
