"Great movie!"
Great movie for kids and adults. It would maybe be better if it didn't have the smoking, and the teenage sexual references were maybe toned down even more, but still a great "good triumphs over evil type movie".

"where's the thrills?"
I thought the movie would be a lot more exciting that all the hype made it seemed. I'd put the feel of it along the lines of "The Goonies" and "Hocus Pocus", but not quite as good. Bland humor weighs the plot down, inappropriate language for children even though I think that's the target audience, maybe for it's time it was a classic, but I guess I missed that boat...should've been made more into a scary film, that's what I thought I was going to be watching.

"Monster Squad"
I had been looking for this movie everywhere for the last 5 yrs and I am so glad to have it now!!! I love this movie. It's a one of a kind. I especially like the sound effects and also the interviews with the now actors. Everyone should see this movie if they like spooky/horror movies. A+++++++++++++ all the way!!

"A Jem of a movie "
I'm an "80's Child"-and don't even remember this film, however, I read about it in a huge spread in Rue Morgue Magazine last year. I finally got to see and WOW! Can't believe I didn't get to know about this flick sooner.

For an "80's movie about kids--which were popular in that decade: with the likes of The Outsiders, Stand By Me and others, this is the better one--for it touches the surface of horror with familiar and decently re-created monsters from classic Universal Films.

The movie was brilliantly cast with some great acting by the kids and monsters--it so blows away films from that period like Goonies.

The movie was fast paced, had humor, but not in a campy way, great effects for the time it was released and was reminicent but surely not a dated looking film at all (except for the mother's hair--LOL!).

This is a great film for horror-hounds and family viewing (but with a few swear words--but I'm sure this film has less of them in it's 85 minutes viewing vs. 3 minutes spent at any public school playground!)

The special features interviews were cool with a couple of the actors and filmmaker's doing interviews in a new documentary)--I must say, this is one of the better Loinsgate releases in a long time!!! Get this--it's a great 80's "Creature Feature" up there with the likes of Gremlins and ET!!

"Monster Squad"
My family enjoyed this classic movie. However, I did not appreciate the long wait on receiving my movie. Estimated delievery date was 1 week and I did not receive until about 3 weeks from order date.

What our customer's say!

"The Monster Squad ", this one has all the monsters from the old days, with new twists and some old ones.
it was good seeing it again, I have liked it from when I saw part of it on tv. but never knew it was on dvd till this year, and I had to have it.

"fantastic buy", I am 32 and I still quote lines from this movie. This is another kids movie classic that has been buried since its time of fame. This is a movie that kids today can watch and get addicted to, such as I did back in the day.

"Rock Until You Drop!", Ah, The Monster Squad. That box office bomb that became a classic to us horror fans. That cute modern day homage to Universal monster flicks and the Little Rascals. If you haven't seen it, someone should kick you in the nards.
Fred Dekker was a fresh and unique talent to the horror world, but seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth(in the documentary on Disc 2 he says that The Monster Squad is the film that killed his career, and that he killed it again by directing Robocop 3. But it makes me wonder if people like Uwe Boll and Ulli Lommel can have steady careers, why can't Dekker make a comeback?). He only directed three films and wrote and directed a few episodes of Tales From The Crypt. His first film, Night of the Creeps, was an excellent homage to B horror films of the 50s and 60s(where's the friggin' DVD??????). His third film, Robocop 3, I can forgive him for. Probably a studio pressure thing, and it wasn't a horror film anyway so it shouldn't count. His second film, The Monster Squad is what he'll always be remembered for.
Like Night of the Creeps, The Monster Squad is an homage to a bygone era of horror, this case being the Universal Monsters-Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, The Mummy, The Wolfman, and The Creature. Universal passed on the Monster Quad, so Dekker had to alter the appearance of the monsters just enough to avoid legal trouble. In case you don't already know, it's about a group of preteen boys(and a little girl) who are horror fans, but find themselves facing the real deal when Dracula shows up with his posse and wants to destroy the magical amulette and diary that Van Helsing used to destroy him 100 years ago. This diary has landed in the hands of Sean(Andre Gower), the leader of the Monster Squad. So now it's up to The Monster Squad to save the world.
Fun, fluffy stuff. It was marketed as a family oriented film. Not a kiddie, Disney type thing, but something the whole family could enjoy. In retrospect, it seems more like something geared for adults. Thank God it was made in the 80s before folks were so tightassed about political correctness. The kids do and say stuff that you'd never hear or see if the film were made now. Plus, there's a bit more blood and gore than you'd expect from a film aimed at families. As you can imagine, the film is more of a comedy than a horror film, but Dekker makes sure not to make it all cute and zany. Dekker's a horror fan and he shows us he's a horror fan. Like the classic Abbott and Costello/Universal Monster team ups, the monsters play it straight. They may be stuck in a comedy, but they act as though they were in a horror film.
Of course the immortal, "Wolf man's got nards" line is found here. I never found that to be very funny, but hey.
Aside from the pointless changing of the cool cover art of the original movie poster, this 2 disc set is a good deal. Naturally the film looks and sounds as good as it'll ever get. It's got an entertaining commentary by Dekker and three of the Squad. Disc 2 is a treat. It has a long and informative documentary that answers just about everything you've ever wanted to know about the Monster Squad. Also included is an interview with Frankenstein from around the time the film was shot. And of course the usual bells and whistles, trailers and whatnot. Unlike most 2 Disc Special Editions that play you for a sucker, this one's good. And the price is right too.
A good treatment for a great cult classic. Now lets get the lead out and release Night Of The Friggin' Creeps!!!

"Classic Spooks For The Season", This classic monster movie from the 1980's blends the best of the monster movie villains to delight and scare those who may be afraid of the dark. I would recommend this movie for anyone who likes horror/comedy/cult classic films like the Goonies.

"BEST MONSTER MOVIE", My brothers and I would always catch it on cable whenever we could and when we got it on VHS, we exhaused the heck out of it!! I tried to protect it as much as I could but we had to throw it out. I have been looking for this DVD for years and its finally here! I am so thrilled and excited. It was the best monster movie ever! There was Dracula, who was so downright evil, the actor was just so damn good and Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and even the Wolf Man, who really does have nards(best quote out of the entire movie)! Don't pass this one up, its one of the greatest monster movies, although not scary enough for adults, its a pleasure watching!

"best monster movie ever", I saw this movie when I was younger and had a hard time finding it. I am glad that I did. This is the best monster movie ever. Not too scary but scary enough for any young person.

"the Monster Squad", if this is the first time you've seen this video take into account when this was made. with the then current production values and time frame this was pretty darn good stuff for its time. So taking it out of context and comparing it to todays CGI content is comparing oranges and apples!
this film is worth watching.

""Wolf Man's got nards!"", Two decades after its brief and disastrous theatrical run, The Monster Squad holds up surprisingly well. Intended as a cross between the Our Gang comedies and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and marketed as Ghostbusters for the John Hughes crowd, Fred Dekker's comedy-horror treat is a lot more enjoyable than either unpromising pitch, not least because it's made not just with affection but some intelligence by people who love the classic Universal horrors, and more importantly it doesn't patronise or condescend - this is the kind of children's film that adults can genuinely enjoy themselves. (Just as well. In a typical fit of perversity, Britain's infamously unbalanced late film censor James Ferman gave the film a 15 certificate in the UK, thus preventing children from seeing it and ensuring its commercial death in that market: not because of the monsters but because he was offended that a six-year old girl is referred to - in the purely dictionary sense of the word - as a virgin!)

The plot is simplicity itself: a club of monster-mad school kids find themselves facing up to the real thing when their small town suddenly finds itself playing host to the Wolf Man, Frankenstein's monster (Tom Noonan), the Mummy, the Gill Man and Dracula (Duncan Regher, who avoided the other actors on the set to stay in character: "I thought he was just being a p***k" offers Noonan in the doc). Running a very tight 81-minutes, it never outstays its welcome or overplays its hand, for the most part playing it straight: rather than just go for cheap pratfalls, people do die at the hands of the monsters in the film, while Leonard Cimino's wonderful `Creepy German Guy' has one brief but memorably powerful moment that reminds the audience there are indeed real monsters in the world. The script could be a little sharper at times and most of the action is relegated to the last half-hour, where we find out just what happens when you blow up a werewolf (definitely need a silver bullet for that puppy), but the whole thing is just so darn likeable it barely matters.

The 2-disc Region 1 NTSC DVD offers a good widescreen transfer that highlights Fred Dekker's good use of the Scope frame and also boasts a good array of special features, though there are some deleted scenes that aren't included (but can be found on YouTube). Sadly the impressive feature-length documentary reveals that one of the squad died of pneumonia in his early 20s.

"The second time around...", I saw this in the theater when I was in the 3rd grade, and fell in love with the movie. When it came out on video, it was a frequent selection of my little brother and I. As I grew up, the movie slipped my mind, until I realized my hubby had never seen it, and I tried to first rent, then buy a cheap used copy. Impossible!!! It was so frustrating, so it is so great they released this DVD. I rewatched it a few times, and although it wasn't the masterpiece I remember, it has held up pretty well. They jokes were still funny and the monsters scary. My fave character is "scary German guy." I'm on the fence about buying this, now that I've seen it again, I don't know if I would rewatch it much if I bought the DVD. My daughter is only 2 and 1/2 so it would be awhile before she could enjoy it. I guess I won't buy it, but I'm so glad I got to see it again and it got the rerelease it truly deserved. This is a wonderful movie and if you have kids in the 6-12 range, I think they would like it too.

"I expected better", When everyone kept talking about The Monster Squad and how good it was I wanted to see it for myself. I expected it to be a masterpiece having all the old Universal monsters in one movie and it was directed by Fred Dekker(Night of the Creeps), but it totally failed.

The plot was alright, but most kids won't be able to understand it. The movie also gets kind of boring, because the scenes focusing on the kids really weren't that interesting and jokes were not funny.

Anyways I would only recommend this to a fan of the Universal monster movies and fans of Fred Dekker, this defintly not better than his first movie "Night of the Creeps"
