"A brief comment" Having remembered fondly the other Buck Rogers movie from the late 70s, if I recall right, I had always wanted to see this one.
I wasn't disappointed. Filled with dramatic and improved special effects (it was now several years from the first Star Wars movie), spectacular cinematography, absolutely fabulous costumes, beautifully done sets, and a stellar cast, this movie delivers on all counts. I suspect just their costume budget was more than the original Star Wars movie.
The plot is well known, so I won't comment there. But the entire cast looks like they're having a grand time with this campy, fun-filled, futuristic romp. Brian Blessed, who plays Vultan, the king of the Hawkmen, looks like he's having the time of his life. In fact, while watching the movie I reflected that I couldn't ever recall seeing an actor having such an uproarious, rip-snorting good time playing a role. He is absolutely beside himself with the pleasure of playing that part, and I just found out why after doing a little research on the IMDB site. Here's an except from the page there:
"As a child he and his friends used to play at Flash Gordon, inspired by the Buster Crabbe TV serials. In these childhood games Brian would always play Vultan, leader of the Hawkmen. In the 1980 film Flash Gordon he played the same role as he had in childhood."
No wonder Brian is having such a good time. :-) It's amazing that he got to play the role of his favorite character in the big screen movie. Good for Brian, who has always been one of my favorite actors. What an amazing coincidence and stroke of good luck for Brian.
All the actors are great too, and Max von Sydow is perfect as the evil Ming. But everyone else in the cast is superb also, including the ones I didn't know as well, and I only knew Timothy Dalton from his James Bond roles.
Overall, a fun movie that more than does justice to the original concept.
"Reluctant Hero Masterpiece" Keep in mind that the effects are "80's Awesome", Flash is a great movie. It has something for everyone and is a fun family film to boot. This was one of my favorite films as a kid and the soundtrack is amazing. The surprising thing about this film is how engaging all the supplemental characters come to be. They are not the paper-cut "extras" that permeate so many other films of this genre. FLASH is legendary! Enjoy!
"An 80's Sci-fi classic!" Heroic football player Flash Gordon (Sam Jones) and his lovely girlfriend Dale (Melody Anderson) were on their way to New York, until their plane crash lands in the hidden lab base of Russian scientist Dr. Zarvok (Topol) who sends them and himself to the planet Mongo on a rocketship. The planet is ruled by the wicked Emperor Ming the Merciless (Max Von Sydow)who plans on marrying Dale and destroying the Earth so he can conquer the universe, Flash must try to rescue her by battling many of Ming's goons, unite two kingdoms to overthrow Ming and is being seduced by a beautiful princess (Ornella Muti).
Fantastic and humorous Sci-fi fantasy comedy based on a classic 30's comic strip, producer Dino De Laurentiis and his studio has brought the comic to life in a grand and yet silly way. The film also stars Timothy Dalton, Kenny Baker and Richard O'Brien, this a delightful and colorful epic that i loved since i was a kid and still love. As of today it has gained a cult following for it's quirkiness and entertainment value, the music score by Queen is just awesome especially the theme song that no one forgets and i highly recommend this movie for good escapist fun.
This special edition DVD contains excellent remastered picture and sound with some fine extras like the Theatrical trailer, two featurettes, a 1936 Flash Gordon serial and sneek preview of the new Flash Gordon series plus a cool Postcard sized artwork of Flash Gordon from Alex Ross.
Also recommended: "Krull", "Star Wars Saga", "Heavy Metal", "The Fifth Element", "Barberella", "Superman 1 & 2", "Superman Returns", "Iron Man", "Star Trek Saga", "Starchaser: Legend of Orin", "The Dark Crystal", "Conan The Barbarian", "Highlander", "Clash of the Titans", "Transformers (1986 and 2007)", "Killer Klowns from Outer Space", "Galaxy Quest", "Spaceballs", "The Black Hole", "Zathura", "Tron", "Rock and Rule", "Dune (1984 and 2000)", "Children of Dune", "Lifeforce", "Nausicca: Valley of the Winds", "Stargate", "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai", and "Big Trouble in Little China".
"Know Before You Buy!" For me, what made this Flash Gordon movie so special was the music by Queen (though Brian Blessed is great!) and if that's what you remember and why you are considering buying this DVD, then DON'T!
The images are clear. The story as campy and fun as ever. But the music seems to have been phoned in from Hong Kong over a very bad connection. For me, this ruined everything. Save your money. Better to by the CD of the soundtrack!! How in this day and with the technology available this DVD ever saw the light of day is beyond me.
"Hilarity in action" Whenever I see this movie, I have a smile on my face for hours afterwards! Princess Aura and Dale Arden are knockouts, the acting is so bad it makes you laugh, and Emporer Ming is the perfect bad guy. Only recommended for those who aren't expecting greatness and don't care about plot holes. 5 stars for the people who like to have a good time watching a movie!

What our customer's say!
""He's going to save us all!"", "Flash Gordon" is a camp spectacle based on the '30s B&W serials. While the serials were in dreary black&white, the 1980 "Flash Gordon" is awash in every existing color. It's in glorious, wonderful, color, color, color. With Sam J. Jones as the frequently shirtless hero, the soaring QUEEN soundtrack, and art house icon Max Von Sydow as the villainous Ming the Merciless,it's something not to be missed.
"Flash Gordon" has a seemingly simple plot. The eponymous hero has to save Earth. He also happens to be a football player. For some reason,he brings along his girlfriend Dale Arden (Melody Andersen),whom Ming desires. Numerous adventures follow. Future 007 Timothy Dalton goes around in Robin Hood drag, while Brian Blessed goes around in hot pants with hawk wings.
"Flash Gordon" is a true camp classic. It saves the universe from boring and dreary movies! It's a veritable feast for the senses!
"Slaves of the Empire.", Maybe I could have understood the movie better if I wasn't having so much fun watching it! Why are Sam and Dale stuck out in the universe instead of going back to earth? Well, I'd stay out in space if the alternative was the dreary, dust-ridden planet we get a glimpse of at the beginning of the film. The movie picks up steam and color as soon as Dr. Zharkov kidnaps our hero and heroine and whisks them off to save the planet, and especially when they reach the court of the fabulous Ming the Merciless. Ridiculed for its "camp" qualities when it came out, and for the inadequate and dubbed acting of Sam J. Jones as "Flash," FLASH GORDON in fact tells its story in a relatively straightforward manner, while Jones is unexpectedly winning in a difficult role; as soon as he remembers his football plays in a push against Ming's henchmen in reel two, he won my heart in that old fashioned Lil Abner Peter Palmer way. In some ways he's a fool, but no more than Jimmy Stewart was in the 30s and 40s movies FLASH harks back to. In the words of Queen's catchy theme song, "Flash! --Ahhh, ahhhh!"
Melody Anderson does what she can with a all-American girl shtick, but she comes closer to pure camp with her endless posturing about America and her defiance of danger. However, the role calls for her to show more complex emotions when she must give up Flash in order to save him, and she fulfills these scenes admirably, telling Aura, for example, that she can't poison Ming, for she has promised to be a good wife to him (in exchange for him sparing Flash's life). Keeping her promise turns out to be her Achilles' heel, and that one trait seemed quintessentially American, a naive belief in one's word for good or bad. She's like Sarah Palin, except her gowns are better.
As Ming, Max von Sydow does better work than in any of those Ingmar Bergman movies that made him famous. Tim Dalton takes his time in his slow evolution from evil to sidekick, and his portrayal gains strength from his early refusal to play for viewer sympathy. Like everyone else, I enjoyed Brian Blessed's hawkman, though at times he comes perilously close to enjoying himself more than anyone else. But hands down the movie belongs to Ornella Muti as Aura, she is smoking hot and just gets better and richer throughout the film until she attains actual cinema perfection in the last sequence of FLASH GORDON. You'd have to be Myron Breckinridge to adequately describe her genius in print.
"Flash Gordon", Have always liked this movie, especially since Queen did the soundtrack. In great shape, boxed; already watched a few times.
"A classic movie..", I got my DVD today and I must say I am really happy with it. I felt like a kid again watching this movie and even watching the theatrical trailer. I loved the interview With Alex Ross, I myself am an artist so I appreciated it. I noticed half the people on here whining about the audio and this and that...and really..It doesn't even matter...this is a great classic film! And if you appreciate the genre then you will love this movie! The people who complained need to learn they shouldn't always sweat the small stuff. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD IT WAS MADE IN THE 80'S What do you expect? Great film..and lots of fun.
"Classic", This is a classic. And they redited it so it looks amazing. The case is cool too if you want to display it. It fold up to open. I really love this movie. You should check out the new figures they just put out for it.

""What do you mean, Flash Gordon approaching?"", It's funny that I just saw this movie yesterday on T.V. and it happens to be one of my favorite movies. Since I missed most of it, I popped in the DVD player and was in the mood to watch it. The picture was good (I have a upconverting DVD player to 1080p and I'm waiting to see the new Aquos Blu-ray player due out in May). The extras are not really appealing but then again that's just me. When I think of extras I like to see deleted scenes, extended versions, interviews with the cast and crew, and bloopers. Check out what's included by clicking on the picture that shows the back of the DVD case here on Amazon.
The soundtrack by Queen, is fantastic. The battle scenes are great and the acting was good. It stars Sam Jones, Topol (007: For Your Eyes Only), Timothy Dalton (007: License to Kill and The Living Daylights), Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist and Judge Dredd), and Brian Blessed (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves). Vultan (Blessed), the leader of the hawk men is my favorite. He's hillarious; especially when Flash Gordon (Sam Jones) was playing football with Ming's (Max Von Sydow) guards on Mongo and he happens to hit a guard on their head and then look up into the air and whistle as to look innocent.
Flash Gordon is basically on the planet of Mongo which is lead by a tyrannical leader named Ming the Merciless. Ming was bored and is "playing " with the planet earth before he destroys it. When the scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov traces where the destruction of earth is coming from, he takes Flash Gordon and Dale Harden hostage and on a nice little trip out of the universe and onto the planet Mongo. Can Flash Gordon save earth before it's too late?
Even though I was able to buy this DVD on sale, the price is a little steep. You would think there would be more extras. I've bought other DVD's for $20 and yes, there was a lot of extras. As of now, there is only this DVD available as the older one that was released a while ago is no longer available.
"Go, Flash, Go!", Certain movies stay with you long after you've seen them, and I can happily say that Flash Gordon is one of them. In order to appreciate the beauty of this science fiction gem from 1980, you must first recognize the screenwriter's background. Lorenzo Semple Jr. wrote this, and not too many years before he delivered the campy Batman television series that thrilled us children growing up in the late 60's. Well, all the campiness of that series works its way into this script, and translates into an almost comic book feel on the screen. Not coincidentally, Semple also wrote the campy screenplay to the remake of King Kong in 1976. You can sense that same type of purposeful corniness here. Although the cast is almost secondary to the characters depicted, they do a decent job with the material here. I'm glad the people who gave us Flash Gordon didn't try to take themselves or the nature of their product too seriously. As a bonus, and a defining bonus at that, we have the soundtrack delivered to us by Queen. It all adds up to a classic romp through the genre, and it only had the misfortune of being released between the first two Star Wars motion pictures. The special effects never quite achieve "special" status, but who cares? The lovers of Flash Gordon will always hold this one to heart closely.
"He saved every one of us...", I grew up seeing this movie on tv all the time, like over ten years ago and loved it. Nice packaging with this dvd by the way- This movie is Classic fun and the music is rocking great. They don't make them quite like this anymore for good reasons but it is the best of it's kind.
"Flash...Ahhhhahhhhh!!", This all new Flash Gordon re-mastered special edition is great for anyone still looking to own Flash on DVD. Admittedly, this DVD could have been better. There is no director or actor commentary on this DVD and not as many special features as I would like for a $20 DVD, for god sakes, where is the second disk! With all that aside Flash Gordon is one of my favorite films from my youth and still holds a place for me in cinema history as a defining character, and film in the science fiction genre.
Flash Gordon is the precursor to the Superman archetype, the golden boy, all-American, brave and courageous with moral fortitude. All the chicks dig `em and all the dudes what to be him. This film is campy and has so many fun cheese ball moments, much like the Batman TV show from this era. It's loud, boisterous, and brightly colored. This sci-fi extravaganza of thrills and heroic themes features one mortal man saving the world from an evil war monger, Ming the merciless. Ming is one of the great villains in cinema history. And Flash, with his perfectly quafft blonde feathered locks, goes down as one of the greatest American heroes in fantasy and sci fi lore. Who hasn't heard of Flash Gordon?
This film is from the era that gave us Buck Rodgers and later Battle Star Galactica and this one stands above the others. This film is basic good vs. evil. This film is everything a bad film should be, but for some unknown reason it's not, it works! Bad special effects, terrible dialog and hilarious costumes only add to the charm of this classic. The best thing in this film, aside from Flash playing football with the empiral guards, is the sound track from Queen. it will send shivers down your spine. You will tingle with excitement when the drum beat kicks in. It's really an amazing moment that few films have ever been able to duplicate.
There are many underlying sexual themes resonating in this film that is a reflection of the time it was created, this is the ultimate 70's sci-fi epic. Flash almost dies about four times in this film and you get the notion he might not be the smartest hero, but he's spirited, and almost flawlessly pure of heart and you just know he's gonna save the day, get the girl and make it back in time to play for the Jets on Sunday. The chicks are also pretty 1970's type hot as well, another plus!
The other great thing on this disk is the original episode of the movie serial from the 30's; it is gut bustlingly bad and is almost worth watching all on its own. Priceless stuff. Just wait to you see the "Savages" that flash has to fight in the pit of doom. He never even thoughts a punch, he just picks everyone up and tosses them around. The costumes of the space guards are spectacularly awful. They look like a cross between sir lance-a-lot and the tin man.
If you're into retro sci-fi, good natured fun or just a good ole action movie you need to check this out.
"Campy, Cheesy, Awesome", Unfortunately, I never saw this movie as a kid. I would have loved it. But seeing it for the first time in my twenties, despite some bad acting and cheesy dialogue, the film was thoroughly enjoyable. The visual graphics in the film are amazing. The colors and otherworldliness really take you into another place.
Not only is the film completely over the top, it's actually a pretty decent take on totalitarianism and the nature of dictators. By inspiring fear into the hearts of his subjects, Ming is able to "divide and conquer". The people are so afraid of Ming that they will sell each other out for his favor. But Flash Gordon, through his conscience and humanity, is able to bring them together to topple the psychopathic Ming.
Pure fun!
Oh, and the Queen soundtrack is worth the price alone.
