"The Best Maya/3D Training Resource on the Market?", This has been a hot issue with a lot of 3D Training material out there. Who has the best learning method and the most efficient approach. Some claimed to be the best when their videos are nothing but creating a cube, showing the extrude tool, extruding a few times, then saying "Continue to extrude and..." then a fade out to a highly detailed Gollum face - with no direction and no instructions on the workflow and the purpose of the tools.

I've been following 3DBuzz for a while. I loved their free learning videos that they had (and still have) on their Website. When they announced their masteringMaya: The Fundamentals class and the DVD and we had to pay for it, a lot of 3DBuzz fans were a little uncomfortable with it. Heck, some said that they'll just download the free VTMs (Video Training Modules) and get the same thing... those people were proven wrong very quickly.

Soon after the first class (out of three) started , it then became apparent that the masteringMaya: The Fundamentals was at a whole new level of what 3DBuzz had done in the past. They were covering a very complex application and workflow through video, from beginner to the required skills needed to be PROFICIENT with the application. That's what Fundamentals mean. It's not a beginner course, nor is it an advanced course. It gets you up to speed of whatever level of skills you have to a proficient user of Maya.

Here's a little overview of the training. It starts with an introduction of what is Maya, 2D vs 3D, and then a pretty detailed overview of the Maya interface. There are three projects with an extra batch of advanced architecture lessons between Project 1 and 2. Project 1 is the Talented Ball. It's a new approach to the classic "Bouncing Ball" as this ball not only bounces in the scene, but actually bounces on stage through a door with a dynamic curtain rig (meaning the curtains open with a natural sway), up to a stool and a microphone in this fully textured and light scene. It's then the students responsibility to make the ball do anything that the student may want, singing, dancing, magic, bending a spoon... Then Project 2 is "The Abduction". In short, it's an Alien in a ship coming to earth to come to abduct a special victim. The third Project is the zenith of any project a "beginning" student can ever think of doing. "When Mechs Attack". A fully rigged mechnical Mech in a snow wasteland leaving foot prints in the snow. Every project is covered in details from storyboard to production. Not only will Jason and Zak walk you through to production phases, but they'll cover in details the workflow and the tools that you'll be using, and unlike a lot of 3D Training materials, they'll even cover the purpose and some workflow details. They'll teach you why you're using a certain tool for a certain situtation, while still giving the students a lot of creative freedom.
