Others say...
"Still Makes Me Laugh" This is not high brow comedy by any stretch, but it makes no difference since there are so many funny lines and scenes that it all comes together to make me laugh all these years later.
Chase, Murray, Dangerfield and Knight all have memorable parts in this movie and as a golfer some of these things come across as pretty funny since they are semi-real. Not dancing gophers but some attitudes and general country club situations.
Yes it is juvenile also in many respects, but I still think that I must "be the ball" on the course. Doesn't help my golf game much but makes me smile when I am not doing well.
"Caddyshack: A Comedy Classic" This is one of the classic comedies from the 80's. The main actors Ted Knight, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, and Chevy Chase play extremely well together. This is not brilliant comedy; however, it is knee slapping funny in numerous scenes. When Chevy Chase sings, "I was born to love you, I was born to lick your face." You can't help but laugh. Some jokes hit, some don't, but overall, this is an enjoyable comedy that is a 4-star delight to watch. Enjoy.
"Buy a DVD like this, get a free bowl of soup" Do yourself a favor, play 36 holes in the day time and at night pop this DVD in and get stoned to the bejesus belt. C'M0N...CANN0NBALL....CANN0NBALL!!! However, don't buy this DVD from Mr. Wonderful, no matter what spelling you use.
"It's funny, but it's not all it's cracked up to be..." I will admit that `Caddyshack' is severely overrated. Sure, it's funny and I found enjoyment out of the film in general, but it is no where near the laugh riot that many faithful devotees will have you thinking it is. That said, `Caddyshack' does have followers for a reason, and that is that it manages to tickle the funny bone on more than one occasion, and the star making comedic turns by many in the cast don't hurt the films iconic status.
The film revolves around a posh golf course that is being destroyed by a gopher as well as a loudmouthed new member. The film almost has no point other than to make fun of itself at every possible juncture, stringing along a slew of subplots involving a caddy contest and a doomed love affair in order to give the film a reason to exist, but when it all boils down to it there is no reason to watch other than the pointless gags and memorable one-liners.
The script is not as tightly woven as it could be; that is to say that the film is not very smart. This is kind of like the movie that is so dumb you can't help but laugh at it and since you laughed you repeat and tell you friends and then they watch it and laugh and then you all talk about it even though deep down you know the movie is kind of a waste; sort of like `Napoleon Dynamite', except this one stars Bill Murray so you think your adoration is justified, even though it's not. Just take a moment to let the accuracy of my above words sink in, since you know I'm right even if you don't want to admit it.
The acting for the most part is good. Many have raved Murray, but I actually feel he is the weakest link here. His performance is more slapstick than anything else, building off stupidity to get a laugh. Rodney Dangerfield is himself, same old loud and obnoxious (and crude) character he liked to play so often, and he works to a degree. To me Ted Knight matches and actually trumps Dangerfield, delivering a spot on portrayal of a man at wits end. The real standout though is Chevy Chase who manages to get most of the laughs from me with his sly and steady delivery, keeping his comedy subtle yet always effective. The rest of the cast is effective, but these four always get the recognition so I figured I'd ring in here as well.
In the end I'll say that I liked `Caddyshack' and would probably watch it again, but as far as it being the best comedy out there, I have to say that it is not. Is it the best golf movie out there? Well, I don't watch a lot of movies about golf but of the one's I've seen this surely beats `The Legend of Bagger Vance' but doesn't even come close to the comedic energy of `Happy Gilmore' so I guess I'd have to say, no, it is not the best golf movie out there. It's fun though, and it has a huge following, so it must have gotten some things right.
"A timeless classic." Still a classic after all these years. I remember watching this as I grew up. You can watch this over and over again and still laugh at the jokes.

What our customer's say!
"Ages Pretty Well But Too Bad About the DVD!", Few comedies age well as the laugh-quotient of the gags tend to experience severe time decay and so it's nice to watch a comedy that has aged relatively well compared with many that I've seen. This can be attributed to the great collection of comedic talents such as Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. Dangerfield is very good in his role as the belligerent slob although not all his one-liners score but quite a few managed to make me laugh still. Ted Knight was the best actor of the lot and his expressions of outrage are priceless. Bill Murray's crusade against the mechanical gopher is also classic comedy while Chevy Chase is his usual funny self.
Unfortunately, this version of the dvd is very, very poor with dreadful picture and sound qualities. Fans of this film should give this particular dvd version as wide a berth as possible and wait for a much, much better picture restored and sound remastered with at least 5.1 surround sound options included in either the standard or Blu-ray formats to surface and to give this particular version a miss.
Still a good comedy but wait for a much better version to be released.
"Caddyshack Great Movie ...Needs to be Restored", Caddyshack Very Funny Movie....I am only reviewing the quality of the picture ...VERY GRAINY AND NOT SHARP Needs to be Remastered and Restored and this is a 2007 DVD Release..... Come On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Good movie - bad disc", Disc always stops at the same location about 20 minutes into play, I am able to navigate forward to get it playing again but that ruins the movie. Defect discovered months after purchase, I plan to buy another in HD DVD or DVD format.
"my private review mach 5", 1 of my favorite movies i was never a caddy, so I cant relate I was a bagger at a supermarket
"Caddyshack 20th anniversary edition", Of course the movie is great and it was a great price, but the copy I received was a standard edition and not the 20th anniversary edition; I feel cheated.

"Caddyshack Review", Not as funny as I remember, but I still am a fan of Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray. The gopher joke is still hilarious, and I miss Rodney - not around to kick any more.
"Comedy On The Links", Caddyshack is a hilarious comedy about golfers at a country club. Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray lead the cast down the fairways of laughter and mayhem. With all of the one liners and mixture of different actors, Caddyshack will not disappoint. Some mild language and some nudity, would still recommend for mature audiences. One of my favorite Chevy Chase films along with Vacation.
"As the years go by, the perfection of his achievement only becomes more obvious", There haven't been many actors that gave a perfect performance in a film. Maybe just Brando in the Godfather, Eli Wallach in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and Ted Knight, here, in Caddyshack.
As the years go by, the perfection of his achievement only becomes more obvious. If the Academy had any credibility at all, they would honor Ted Knight with a posthumous Academy Award for this performance.
""Doody!"", I used to live at Rolling Hills Golf and Country Club where CADDYSHACK was filmed, and from my third floor apartment overlooking the eighteenth hole I got to hear every line of dialogue in this film repeated ad nauseam by wannabe Rodneys, Chevys, Teds and Bill Murrays. I also got to see careless golfers' carts tip over, dumping them into the lake, something that should have been in this film, but wasn't.
Frankly, I've never understood why CADDYSHACK rates so very high amongst comedies. The individual comedic performances are consistently very funny (and in Rodney Dangerfield's case, truly inspired), but this film always has struck me as LESS than the sum of its parts.
In CADDYSHACK I always feel as though I'm watching a dozen competing stand-up acts a la the cable show MAKE ME LAUGH. The various bits (such as the infamous pool scene) are individually hilarious. Unfortunately, none of it meshes comfortably into a cohesive whole, and I never find myself wholeheartedly enjoying this film.
And, considering it was an afterthought anyhow, I wish they'd lose the gopher entirely. Man, that shtick is just plain dumb.
"classic comedy", I was shocked that this wasn't in our VHS library, so I bought the DVD.
There's a lot going on at the exclusive Bushwood Country Club. Caddy Danny Noonan is hoping for the caddy scholarship, and his best bet is to kiss up to Judge Smails (Ted Knight). Judge Smails meets his nemesis in the uncouth Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield), who's thinking of buying the club. Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) is a rich playboy who refuses to take anything seriously and is full of skewed advice for Danny, who he takes under his wing.
And then there's Carl Spackler (Bill Murray), the assistant groundskeeper who's tasked with killing the golfers... er... gophers.
This is such a classic comedy. I was surprised at how long it had been since I'd seen it, because so many of the scenes remained so vivid--the Baby Ruth bar in the pool, "see the ball, be the ball," the multiple attacks on the gophers.
I was about to say that this was a comedy without a message, but I realized it's not, really--it's about pretension. You end up rooting for the characters without it--Ty, Danny, and even Carl and Al--and sneering at the pretentious caddies and Judge Smails.
One thing I didn't really remember from watching this before: Chevy Chase was surprisingly hot. Or maybe I'm just drawn to quirkiness.
Anyway, fun stuff.
