"What more do you want? I like it"
So I wanted a big external HD. It has to be reliable. It is quiet. I've used it to transfer 100s of gigs. It is reliable, NOT slow. I'm a power user..AND I like this.

"works but loud"
just like many others have stated the drive works just fine but is pretty loud. and big. due to the noise i will buy another brand next time.

"does exactly what it is supposed to do"
I bought this drive six months ago as a backup device. It installed fine straight out of the box (on a PC), and hasn't given me any trouble since. It just sits there, shines its blue light and - works. I don't consider it particularly noisy either.

"Not worth it"
The price is tempting, but the drive rarely mounts on a Mac. I tried to use it for Time Machine but when I turn it on and the Mac boots up, I always get a prompt that the computer does not recognize the Drive and that I should format it. I should have gone for the Western Digital. Oh well...

"Solid performance, but..."
I've had no performance problems so far; it's relatively fast. However, while the drive is Mac compatible, it isn't automatically so, out of the box. I had to hunt through the support pages at the Iomega site to find instructions on how to repartition for Mac compatibility. It's not brand new on the market; I'd have though Iomega might have included info about repartitioning for Mac by now.

What our customer's say!

"Failed after a year", Awful product. Was Blazing hot, I finally had another fan blowing on it, and then 1 year after purchase it died. Do not purchase.

"Solid drive, gets very hot.", I have been using this drive as a backup to my backup external hard drive. I work in video/photography, so I needed the ability to have everything filter into one, final backup device. This drive was the best price in the 1 TB market and at the time, had little reviews.

So far, it has worked flawlessly. It's sleek design looks good and contrary to what someone else said, it's far from being bulky. It's smaller than my temporary backup external drive that's only 250gb compared to this 1 TB.

As for noise, it's no louder than the hard drive you have inside your pc that is it's noise is suppressed by your computer case. Noise is nominal at best from this drive.

The only concern I have with this drive is that it gets extremely hot to the touch after being on a very short time. Granted, I don't keep it on more than an hour every day but when it comes time to turn it off, the top is very hot. I'm sure it's because Iomega crammed lots of storage capacity into a tightly packed area. Seems within operating range but be sure not to stack it somewhere that it can't receive adequate air circulation.

Remember, smaller is not always better...that was the fad a few years ago with everything and it just didn't work.

Good drive, lots of storage space, does generate a good bit of heat and noise level is nominal.

"Iomega review, Three months later", After considering all the user pros and cons of this device, I went ahead and purchased this drive back on June 25th, and its main purpose was to be the main back up for my digital video and music collections. I copied over 100GB of data that weekend and it went smoothly, but towards the end I noticed that the power light went off mid file copying and the drive disappeared. I chalked it up to over working the drive, rebooted, and continued on with it only happening one more time. My eyebrow was raised, but no worries as of yet.

In July/August, turning on the drive would often lead to the drive starting to spin, but the power light going out. Turn it off and back on and it happens again instantly. Three or four times later, it stays on. This happens more than I could stand, but I already had over 200 GB of data on the drive, so it's something I can deal with as long as my data is safe once it gets there.

Fast forward to September. I finally digitize the rest of my music collection and start to copy files to the external drive, and it continues to shut off mid file copying. When I first got it, I could copy a few gigabytes at a time, but now it's struggling with folders under 90MB. Not once or a handful a times...EVERY SINGLE TIME. This is insane. I want to be rid of this device, but it is well out of the 30 day warranty. But wait, there is hope: I found out that the external drive just might have a grudge against windows XP, because when I hook it up to my Vista powered laptop, I doesn't shut off at all! Even though it should work with all operating systems that it's compatible with, I brushed that aside...I have a new glimmer of hope! But I still have a majority of my files on the XP powered PC. So I reconnect it to my PC, although I haven't decided on which method I was going to use to move files from my PC to the laptop to the external drive. Well yesterday, the drive made that decision for me.

I turned it on, and the main video folder is corrupted. Drive capacity shows that the bytes are still counted as being there, but the folder shows 0 bytes, 0 data. I Run scan disk, no errors. Defrag won't work. After trying a few more things for an hour, and after considering all the hoops I'd have to jump through to try and recover the data, I said screw it and reformatted.

So my thoughts on this drive are pretty clear; it was a waste of my $200. Of course I have DVD backups of everything I copied to the drive, so I'm not too upset about losing the data. But the fact remains that it failed at being a reliable device which I could use to quickly upload files back to my PCs. I got this to last for a few years, but it didn't even make it a full three months. Now I'm left with a $200 brick that I wouldn't trust to hold a collection of text files.

"Works like a charm", I've used a Western Digital external hard drive in the past, and lost all data on it twice. Also, the WD would only power up when used, adding extra time to access data.

This Iomega drive has a ton of space, works fast, is always-on and thus has no boot time, and has not even hinted at crashing or failing after two months of use.

"Don't buy it. Get a WD MyBook.", This external HD is not good. Period. I have 7 external drives, and I find this one to be crap. I returned it almost immediately after it failed. Not good.

It was too big, too loud, unruly, and flat out didn't work properly. I had to return it.

Do not buy this model, no matter how inexpensive it is. Buy a Western Digital MyBook instead. I have 4 and they are reliable and pretty close to the same price (if not less expensive by now!)

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Defective", When i got my external hardrive I was excited to use it right away, after one session of uploading photos, videos, and word documents I properly ejected, shut off, and removed the USB port. next time I tried to use it, the light wouldn't come on, and the file icon would not show up on my computer. Now i cannot acces anything on my external. How would i go about using the warranty on this product without getting all my files erased?
-Rick

"excellent product, ", great performance, It does make a little of a blowing noise like some of the review state but is due to the 7200RPM and all I need it was storage and this product definitively have that. Really, it don't interfere with a movie viewing because you can always place it on the floor or away from your location. Very satisfied with it, that might buy another one

"So Far, So good", I bought this to add space to my Motorola Moxi DVR. It is doing a good job thus far. No complaints.

"So far, so good with my Macbook", I have this in two partitions: for Time Machine backup on my Mac, and for file storage. THIS NEEDS TO BE FORMATTED in the disk utility with journaling turned on BEFORE you use it. Go to the Iomega site and follow their instructions.

So far it has worked fine and isn't any louder than any other 7200 rpm drive I have had in the past, and its nowhere near as loud that the fans on the RAID I have at work. For the price, I would buy it again.

"Never Again Will I Buy an Iomega Branded Product", Purchased the product and firstly the PC only recognized/registered 500GB. Opened the case and reseated the drives. The PC then saw the 1TB. Performance was stable for about two weeks after which; now I am forced to reseat the drives or fiddle with the connectors in the case whenever I use the drive. If I do not do this, the PC does not recognize the drive and ask to reformat the disk first. I realize now also that the fan no longer works. This was purchased November 2007! Now totally frustrated I have decided to purchase two enclosures and dump the Iomega case as the HDDs seem to be working fine. Then again they should as they were not made by Iomega. The warranty process I have decided not to pursue given the lack of response received thus far from technical support. Iomega's support is extremely poor. Messages go unanswered and the website is a total waste of time. I was alarmed at the number of negative experiences being reported by other purchasers of this product on the Iomega website. Iomega needs to do better and I regret having purchased the product without reading the reviews. Unless you are being forced to by unearthly forces, give this a miss. I see Amazon does not allow negative ratings....so 1 star is the lowest I can go.
