Others say...
"Who wants to kill some bugs!" Now this might lose some weight with my review, but I feel I should first state that I have not read Heinlen's legendary novel yet. Based on some other research I've done, it seems the movie does not accurately represent the novel. I realize that often time's movies can butcher a great novel, just look at Battlefield Earth. Absolutely terrible rendition and the movie wasn't that interesting overall. On the other hand I enjoyed Starship Troopers in its own right. While maybe not an exact replication of the novel, I think it did alright for a stand alone movie.
I'm usually a sucker for Science Fiction films; I'll watch them even if they're terrible. To me, Starship Troopers wasn't a terrible film; in fact I rather enjoyed it. I can get into an action sci-fi movie centered on killing a bunch of alien bugs! Whatever social satire Heinlen was initially attempting with his novel is virtually lost here, so all we have left to watch is a military action movie in a futuristic setting. Alright, I'll buy into it; however, some parallels to other greater films can't help but be made. I'm naturally talking about the movie Aliens, which I feel this movie was trying to really borrow a lot from. We have everything you'd expect from that influence, hordes of alien creatures and the human infantry armed to the teeth shooting them. Honestly, if you like that kind of a film concept you'll find this movie entertaining. Granted it's not as high quality as Aliens, even though Starship Troopers came out years later, but most people will still have fun with it if you're not expecting the book.
This story sort of centers around an infantry trooper named Rico and it tries to have more of a dramatic feel by delving into the background of how he joined the Mobile Infantry. In some senses it tries to make some parts a bit sappy with his friends and this can come off a bit silly, but it's not too bad, I've definitely seen much worse in my day. I think the world we're brought into is pretty interesting. The government system is pretty interesting in the sense that you can't vote unless you're a citizen of the federation. In order to become a citizen you have to spend time in service to the military. It's kind of interesting, some countries have mandatory service for their citizens even today, but this is on a very extreme scale. From there we get to see Rico go through boot camp all the way up to his first battle and all the other fighting he's sent through. The first part of the film can feel a bit slow at times, but once he's on the battlefield things pick up pretty quickly! Once the fighting actually started I was pretty locked in. You shouldn't expect the greatest acting of all, after all this wasn't a huge scale production in terms of budget, but it's good for what it is.
One of the main points in Starship Troopers is the bugs! If you like creatures or monsters in any way then you'll find merit in this movie. The bugs look really cool in my opinion and are particularly vicious! One part that was neat about them was they moved with a bit of a purpose and the variant species of insects was really neat to see also. They clearly move with a telepathic kind of ability between each other and this is obviously pulled right from the script of Aliens.
Overall if you're up for a decent action packed science fiction film this is a pretty good watch. Don't expect to get the highest quality script or acting here though, just expect lots of dead bugs and torn apart humans. I thought it was just good enough to keep me entertained, but I wouldn't ever put this in my list of all time greatest films. Enjoy it for what it is and you'll have some fun with it. If you go in expecting high quality and something akin to the book, you'll likely be quite disappointed.
"the war on...bugs" STARSHIP TROOPERS is both brilliant satire AND highly entertaining, well crafted sci-fi adventure flick. The concept behind it and what you get on the screen is a perfect parody of infamous WWII propaganda films. TROOPERS lightheartedly calls the viewer's attention to the propensity of propagandized, jingoistic humans for senseless violence without conscience, comicly using a war of humans versus mindless, souless, agressive "bugs" to make the point. In the top 20 best sci-fi films ever and a lot of fun.
"Great Movie" This is a great movie.
The seller did a great job shipping it to me- because I ended up getting it the very next day.
"An Entertaining Exercise in Gratuitous Gore and Nudity" The soldiers of the future will be stupid, sexy and totally expendable. Remind me to leave a note to my great grandchildren telling them not to sign up for military service!
The film is VERY loosely based on R. Heinlein's classic novel and borrows only the barest elements of its plot. P. Verhoeven's soldiers are kids right out of highschool: niave, petulant and easily swayed by lofty speeches about honor and duty. That, and they are full of blood and internal organs that are just begging to be splattered all over the place.
The movie's fun is in the preposterously gruesome battle scenes between hordes of alien 'Bugs' and the tiny, poorly trained pin-cushions otherwise known as Humans. The troopers move from planet to planet, hand delivering nukes to the bugs while dying horribly and in large numbers themselves. All of this is not to be taken seriously, neither is the mostly superfluous love triangle between the main characters.
Just sit back and enjoy the slaughter, boobies (if that's your cup 'o tea), and sly social commentary. Higher level brain functions are not required, but will reveal some added depth. Dolby 5.1 audio is available, but extra features are limited to director commentary.
"Hollywood screws up" Why write review number 775, you may ask? Starship Troopers is a movie very loosely based on an excellent Robert A Heinlein SF book from 1959. In the 1990's Director Paul Verhoeven tried with notable failure to make this fine story into an antiwar movie. Heinlein's story was just to good for Verhoeven's limited ability to ruin. There are two ways to watch this movie. Strait up as a good action adventure, or as a comedy. For the comic effect play the directors commentary while watching, and laugh as he tries to explain how this action movie is really an antiwar film. Its like getting two movies in one. You can enjoy the comedy even more if you read the short (205 page) novel first. you can read any of the other reviews for the story line ect.

What our customer's say!
"Best of the Series", For the Starship Troopers movie series, this is the best of them. This is a great action film, though do not look for any quality acting. This is an enjoyment only type movie.
"Good transaction", I bought the DVD of Starship Troopers for my wife (believe it or not). She had a video tape of Starship Troopers but the VCR ate it and I am surprising her with the DVD for Christmas. I am very satisfied with the price and the shipping time was ok.
"Complete Crap", The polar opposite of the book in so many ways - from the political themes to the weapons and combat.
The combat scenes are a terrible joke. I'd like to think that if we can transport troops to other planets, we could arm them with something better than a current 5.56 rifle. And, maybe arrange for a few mortars or artillery.
Just an awful movie based on one of the greatest military sci-fi books ever written.
"Has its moments, but doesn't really deserve the title ", Starship Troopers is a big budget action film set in a science-fiction based future where most of society is military based, and to be considered a citizen you must serve in the Terran Mobile Infantry. This is of course based on the classic sci-fi/military novel written by Robert A. Heinlein nearly fifty years ago, which was under the same name. The name is pretty much where the similarities between the movie and the book end.
The plot to this film adaptation of this sci-fi classic is not handled very respectfully, Director Paul Verhoeven's sense of satire coming across as being very out of place when I first saw the film. I was wondering if whoever owned the rights to the book knew what they were doing to the material, because I'm sure Heinlein would NOT have approved of the end result.
I've come to accept the satirical aspects of this film, but I don't understand why they'd mock the book, as opposed to making it into an actual movie. I get laughs out of this movie, the action is fun, though simplistic, but as an adaptation of the novel it fails on multiple levels. I put the novel down feeling it was one of the best books I'd ever read. When I left this film it felt like I did after every B-action film you see on an average basis; just nothing that left an impact on me like the book did.
Total Recall and RoboCop were both handled better in regards to mixing action, sci-fi, and satire. Starship Troopers tries hard to be those films, but ultimately fails. Even if it wasn't supposed to be an adaptation of that novel, it still doesn't have the charm of those previous Verhoeven films. They made us laugh at the depictions of society, as well as draw us in with engaging characters. You don't care about any of the characters here, because they're all cardboard cut-outs and clichés, not worth anyone's time. Out of all the movies disappointed me, this one is up there as one of my biggest let-downs.
I really have nothing much left to say, other than I was incredibly disappointed by Verhoeven, and the production team for not providing a better film.
6/10 stars
"Mocks the book on which it was based.", This movie is the liberal reaction to the book. This can especially be seen in the short films that litter the story. It makes fun of Heinlein's "militarism" by turning him into a jingoistic straw-man, following the well worn Hollywood groove of hating the armed forces and pretending that war is a silly game played by overgrown 9 year old boys.
Here is a little Latin from Napoleon for you Hollywood: Si vis bellum para pacum.

"Like a WW2 epic...with bugs", After graduating from high school, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) follows his girlfriend, Carmen (Denise Richards), and best friend, Carl (Neil Patrick Harris), to enlist in the military, but when war is declared between humans and a race of highly-evolved giant bugs, Rico proves that he is a hero in his own right.
"Starship Troopers" can be best described as an over-the-top, unbelievably trashy remake of every World War II epic ever made...but with bugs instead of Nazis as the villains. Based of the comments that I have heard from critics and my friends, in the decade since this film was released, this is the sort of film that you will either love or hate, although I, personally, cannot imagine how anyone could not like this film. If you love really trashy B-grade horror movies, then you will adore this film. It is essentially a B-grade movie made on an A-grade budget. This film contains gratuitous violence, sex and nudity; disturbingly large quantities of bug blood; and Denise Richards. How could that not appeal? The script is a lot smarter than you would imagine, essentially it is a satire of war propaganda films, complete with newsreels and more scenes of bravery than I've seen since John Wayne's death. It is also directed by Paul Verhoeven, the man who gave the world "Basic Instinct", who impressed me so much with this film that I am now half tempted to watch the infamous "Showgirls".
"nothing but cheese", I serioulsly don't understand how anyone, specifically a previous reviewer, can say that this is the "most realistic sci-fi" they're ever seen. The whole permise is so stupid and unrealistic that i couldn't get past the first half without rolling my eyes many times over. Seriously, if we had ships that could reach other worlds and far more advanced technology than we do today, we would never send in a single troop to fight these things. All we'd do is send a few automated ships (no need for pilots) out there to drop a few massive nukes and we'd kill all traces of life on the planet within seconds. there'd be no need for a single person to die. dumb.
"Excellent Movie", When people hear I love this movie so much they usually giggle or look at me funny. Given that it is corny it is still an awesome sci-fi flick. Even more so, and on a level that I can't quite describe in words, I was in the infantry and for some really bizarre reason this movie has more in common with the infantry than most films that try to actually be more non-fictional. That's my opinion though. Nevertheless, an excellent film that never gets old, no matter how many times you've seen it, so it's worth the money for a DVD.
"Irony lost", Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" as done by some who had no respect for Heinlein's values. Despite the conflict in values, I enjoyed it immensely. Of course, given that the irony was so subtle that I, as many, missed it...
A lot of liberties were taken with Heinlein's work, but if one is ignorant of Verhoeven's intent, the spirit appears to be preserved, with an emphasis on a political system based on personal responsibility and accountability, and the premise that a thing worth having must be earned. Clearly these values are without any relation to needs of members of modern western society. So, Verhoeven attempted delicate and subtle irony to show his contempt for these obsolete concepts. Due to his monumental failure, he swore off irony.
The action and effects are lively, the characters well developed and complex, as are the relationships, and the story is a passable tribute to one of the greatest books ever.
The moral of this; don't mess with Heinlein, pacificts shouldn't make war movies, and irony is as controlable as a woman.

"Now that Starship Troopers 3 is out...", Now that Starship Troopers 3 is out on dvd, I would like to review the 1st ST movie. First of all I cannot believe there are almost 800 comments for this one film. Goes to show it hit a nerve on many levels.
Now although I only have the widescreen version of this movie on VHS tape, I can still say it was one of the better, that's right BETTER war films ever made. Sure they use mainly small arms through-out this flick but that's what makes it a challenge. You couldn't very well make a good movie if they just nuked the entire planet the bugs were on huh? That doesn't make a very good story line either so that explains the small arms, plus the co-ed army makes for some enlightened moments. Although if you watch the shower scene, the film makers appear to be making sex sterile. As if a shower full of naked men and women wouldn't be thinking of sex, yea right.
Beyond all that crap however lies a movie to be watched for what it is, purely entertainment. Plus it's always nice to see Denise Richards!!! That is at least the Denise Richards of the '90's.
