"Great tool"
I too have been using S&T for several years. I upgraded from 2005 because I got 2008 w/ GPS for as a gift. Not a lot of changes from 2005 with the exception of activation requirement which doesn't bother me and the new (to me) map style for night viewing.
It was loaded on my XP laptop and now on my new Vista tablet PC. Had a little trouble installing it because the fancy software for walking the user through the installation wouldn't fun on the Vista Table OS. Circumvented it by viewing DVD in 'my computer' and running the installation software directly.
Had no problems after that with installation or activation but I don't a bunch of software running on my laptop that might cause conflicts.
The coordinates on the location sensor are inaccurate by about 125 yards but once the GPS is connected it is dead on.
The GPS is great for getting unlost. I took a wrong turn in Kansas City and went way of my intended route. Fired up the laptop and the GPS and found my location and navigated back to my route. It was much more helpful than my Garmin V for seeing a more detailed and larger map.
I love S&T.

"Streets and Trips 2008"
I've used Streets and Trips for 6 or 7 years. Although stated in product write up, this is not a CD format as in the past, but is DVD, which necessitated me purchasing a DVD reader before I could install software. Also, it takes longer to start up the program than previous versions, without a discernible improvement in features or functions. If it were not for wanting to update street locations, I would have preferred keeping old version. Still the best mapping software available.

"A+ for software, F- for support "
Streets & Trips program scores A+
Tech Support scores F-

I have been using Streets & Trips for several years. I am a professional person, now retired and leading a full time RV lifestyle. I change locations frequently and use Streets & Trips daily. I am mature, mild mannered, kind, thoughtful, and very patient. I am not a computer expert, but I have been using computers since the days of DOS. I use and maintain two computers and a network.

I purchased and installed Streets & Trips 2008 in October 2007. In April 2008, for no apparent reason, it quit working. It would not load. With any other program, I would suspect that a file had become corrupted; I could uninstall and reinstall the program, insert the product ID, and be up and running again in a few minutes. I uninstalled and reinstalled Streets & Trips twice; oddly, it did not ask for product ID and it still would not load. [ONE HOUR] I went online to Microsoft Help, found my problem clearly defined with advice to call tech support at [800] 936-5700 5AM to 9PM Pacific Time Monday through Friday.

I called Tech Support; it appears to be OUTSOURCED. Over the years I have had consistently poor to disastrous (computer crashes) results from outsourced support and will not knowingly buy a program with outsourced support if there is an alternative.

MICROSOFT IS NOT AN IMPOVERISHED COMPANY AND COULD WELL AFFORD 24/7 AMERICAN TECH SUPPORT.

I was assigned a case number, 1066295656, and began a tortuous journey. The task was to go to www.support.microsoft.com/ea which would access a Microsoft program called Easy Assist which would allow tech support to take control of my computer and secretively solve the problem without allowing me to know how it was done.

Following technician's instructions, I was not able to access Easy Assist. Technician frequently put me on hold, then returned to give additional instructions to disable programs running on my computer until only Microsoft programs were running. We worked this way for 2 hours on the first day, 2 hours on the second day, and 2 hours on the third day. [SIX HOURS] Technician then declared that he had exhausted all options and that he would need to refer me to a Microsoft Server tech support. I related my sad story to the clerk who answered the phone; she transferred me to the Server tech where I related the sad story again. Server tech then informed me that there was nothing wrong with my computer. THE SERVER IS DOWN - ITS JUST SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS - THERE IS NOTHING TO DO BUT WAIT.

MICROSOFT IS NOT AN IMPOVERISHED COMPANY AND COULD WELL AFFORD TO FIELD RELIABLE SERVERS AS GOOGLE DOES.

IT ALSO SEEMS TO ME THAT THE SUPPORT TECH SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THE SERVER WAS DOWN BEFORE THE HOURS OF UNSUCCESSFUL REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO REACH THE SERVER.

A Microsoft representative then telephoned me to inquire whether I was satisfied with the tech support; I complained energetically. I was informed that my complaint was being given "Red Alert" status and that a Microsoft executive would call me within two business days - didn't happen.

After several days recuperation I made another call to tech support, got a new case number, 1068747744, and a new technician. This time the process proceeded as planned and the problem was solved; my phone timer revealed that the uncomplicated and successful process had still consumed 48 minutes! I was then transferred to the technician's supervisor who inquired about my level of satisfaction; I replied that I was satisfied with that particular technician but that I was extremely angry with the Microsoft policies and procedures and servers that had wasted many hours of my time. I was again informed that a Microsoft executive would call me within two business days - I did get a call from a Team Manager for Microsoft Home Products.

I was then faced with the task of enabling all the programs that had been disabled. [TWO HOURS]

So Microsoft squandered 9 HOURS of my time and caused me to suffer overwhelming stress and frustration. In my professional life I bill $100 an hour, so Microsoft owes me $900 in compensatory damages for wasting my time, and $500,000 for punitive damages to compensate for my newly acquired Tech Support Phobia which will haunt me until the end of my days. I suffer extreme anxiety by just contemplating Microsoft Tech Support.

My take on this (which may be biased) is that Microsoft responded to its paranoia about persons misusing Streets & Trips by attempting to thwart dishonest persons, utilizing a combination of the worst characteristics of the Gestapo, the KGB, the CIA, the IRS, and the Bush White House to field a complicated, clandestine, circuitous tech support process which punishes and tortures both honest and dishonest persons.

READERS MAY BE ABLE TO DISCERN THAT I AM REALLY MAD ABOUT THIS.

"Activation required"
Been a Street and Trips user for years. The cost of an upgrade seem small even though at times I didn't see much need to.

This is the first year that Streets and Trips required activation. Fortunately I didn't have the problems that others have reported. I have used the product with a external gps antenna and it worked well.

"Not much of an upgrade"
Very disappointed in the upgrades made to this product since the 2006 version. I was hoping to have new neighborhoods included on it, and they aren't, so it was essentially a waste of money. It does have some nice features added, like the "reverse route" function, but overall, hasn't really worked to include new subdivisions (at least in Colorado) at all.

What our customer's say!

"Not worth the hassle of an upgrade", I use S & T 2005, and it works just fine, even with the slight interface issues. Every time I come to purchase the latest version, I am reminded that the copyright protection is annoying and dependant on online registration. I won't be spending my money on such a product which requires online registration. I am getting ready to replace my road warrior laptop, and I value my time too much to spend it trying to contact a MS representative to convince the phone drone that I legitimately purchased the software, and need to get my license enabled for installation onto another machine because I have purchased a newer laptop.

Combine that with the numerous comments that there is no improvement over content of UI design, then the reason to purchase is a no brainer.

I almost forgot, there are many reviewed comments that the products installation is unstable on many laptops. This last fact pretty much renders this latest and greatest version worthless IMHO.

"Streets and trips review", This product takes up way too much room on my hard drive. I am thinking of uninstalling it and sending it back and rely on the old mapquest. This does make it handy however for routing a tour since I am a real estate agent, but not worth buying a new computer over.

"good, but not perfect", I purchased this edition to upgrade from the 2006 edition. As is typical, "up-to-date" means the data is about two years old. My subdivision, created in the summer of 2006, is not indicated in any way. Several new portions of interstate 40 near Greensboro were opened last year - under construction for four years - and are not included, while a segment of I-73 that has not even been started is shown as complete.
I don't use GPS, so I can't comment on it. The thre D maps are interesting and can be useful.

"Streets and Trips #1 for sales travel", For sales people who cover a territory, there is no better product than Microsoft® Streets and Trips. You can import thousands of prospects, assign them unique pushpins that identify their 'sales value' to you, search for best prospects and plan sales calls that group them together. Then you plug in a GPS receiver, and the laptop you have to carry with you anyway guides you with GPS turn by turn spoken directions. You keep your eyes on the road, instead of having to glance down to read hand written directions - or a printout map. Streets and Trips helps reduce the cost of sales by ensuring reps know about all the opportunities in the area - and because they have great planning tools that let the rep ask questions like: "show me how many prospects are within `X' driving minutes of my current location" and more - they can travel more efficiently and see more prospects in the same trip - saving gas and maybe even a return airfare. Reps spend more time in front of the prospect selling instead of behind the windshield driving. [...]

"Good value in times of high gas prices", I drive a ton in my business. Because of increasingly high gas prices, I use this product to set up my routes. That way I don't do a lot of doubling back or going way out of my way. I don't use the maps and directions that Streets and Trips has. But I do use it for putting my stops in the most efficient order. I have a Garmin GPS that I plug the addresses into. My only complaint is that Streets and Trips doesn't have a way to fully integrate my Garmin with the S&T program.

"Map updates a disappointment", For several local streets that have been changed or added for two or three years now, there is no difference in the map information between the 2008 and the 2005 version which I had. This was the main reason I upgraded. Big disappointment!

"MS Streets & Trips", Amazing functionality. If your job requires travel with multiple stops, this software makes it really simple to get to and from your stops in the most fuel efficient route. It's capability to avoid tolls, certain roads, and construction areas is unmatched.

Unless you read the manual, it is a bit tricky to master all the features that MS Streets offers. After you play for a bit, it is very user friendly.

"Good product with flaws", I have been buying Streets and Trips each year for over 5 years, and use it frequently to plan for business trips (I am on the road 36 weeks per year). I have noticed the product is not as good as it used to be, but it still worthwhile as a planning tool, before leaving. In addition, I prefer printed maps and directions to a GPS in the car. Less distracting.
PROS:
- I find it invaluable when I have to find directions (on-the-fly), but do not have wi-fi access. You can pull up a map anywhere from your laptop.
- The program is very flexible in printing maps and directions. If you don't like the directions or want to shorten them, you can cut them and paste into Word for editing. In addition, you can copy and paste maps as well, so I often print a detailed map of the airport and destination with abbreviated directions inbetween.
- Easy to use
- Can find stores and other items of interest easily.
CONS
- The directions from the airport are from the center of the runway rather than the terminal, and often direct you were there are no roads out of the airport. You have to fudge with the program to make it work properly.
_ It sometimes will not let you click on a highway to select a destination, because it thinks something is not there, when in actuality some new was built there.
- the directions often are not the best route. The program does not allow you to easily vary your route. Even if you click on an interstate you wish to use, the directions take you off the interstate then back on it. Another example, I was traveling from Toledo OH to Auburn Hill MI, a straight shot up I-75, however once I got to Detroit, it took me off the interstate on some surface road and then back on for no apparent reason. This actually confused me and resulted in me getting lost. However, that said, I have used NeverLost in Hertz cars many times, and their directions are worse than S&T.
- Few routing options (quickest, shortest, and selected roads only). For example, there is no option to avoid heavily congested roads. They provide constuction information, but not rerouting for construction.
- the maps are not as up-to-date as some of the on-line mapping programs (missing new streets).
- the GPS is relatively inexpensive and works but is very cumbersome. It is hard to find a place to put the laptop so you can see it without diverting your eyes to much off the road. The sound (at full volume) is not loud enough over road noise, and the one time I used it and had to make a quick stop, the laptop went flying - so I no longer want to risk. The extra money for the GPS sensor was wasted.
SUMMARY: No mapping program is perfect. However, this one seems to be getting worse each year. I still like it but really would like to see major improvements. The cost is usually cheap enough to put it with the flaws, so I will probably continue to get one.
One side note: it does not work on Apple computers.

"great planning", This is my 4th update for this program. It installed easier than the previous ones and works easier and better.
