"My favorite Guitar Hero game!" I LOVE playing this game with my kids! I wasn't a big fan of Guitar Hero at first because it seemed a bit too challenging until my son walked me through the "training mode." I am now addicted and I LOVE all the 80s music!
"Solid Guitar Hero game, but NOT for $50" I am completely amazed how long this game kept a [...] price tag. This game is nowhere near worth $50. Overall, its a solid Guitar Hero game featuring great 80s hits. If you love 80s music and Guitar Hero you will love this game.
Now, why all the bad rap on the price? This game is basically a skin for Guitar Hero II. All the characters are the same, all the menus look the same, everything visual is the same. The only difference is they tried to throw some 80s crap on top of it. The worse part however is the amount of songs. This game doesn't even feature half of the songs in Guitar Hero II. Its shorter by 1 or 2 venues and has NO bonus songs at all. Plus there aren't even as many characters, outfits, guitars, or anything. Its basically less than half a game.
Its finally worth its price now that its dropped to [...]. If you can get it for that much its definitely worth a play. If you can't, then don't bother or have somebody else buy it for you, lol.
"Great becaus of the price drop." I have Guitar Hero 3 and Aerosmith for the Wii, and Guitar Hero 1 and 2 for the PS2. I love playing all of them, mainly because I love the music, and also, my 3 year old likes to play along with a play guitar, so it is a good bonding experience (he always wins...). I was hesitant to buy this for $49.99, but I jumped as soon as I saw the price drop to $19.99. Even though it offers nothing new, it is a blast from the past to re-enjoy some songs that I listened to before high school. I can't believe some of the big retailers are still charging $49.99 for this. Rock Band 2 for the PS3 is on deck :)
"Fun addition to the Guitar Hero franchise!" Even though the number of songs to $$ ratio isn't nearly as good as the other games, this is still a lot of fun. If you are a fan of 80's era music, this is for you. If you are not, you will be disappointed. This is what the title says: Rocks the 80's...
"Could be better" This was the first Guitar Hero game I owned. Guitar Hero 80's is just Guitar Hero II with neon colors put all over.
Guitar Hero has very responsive gameplay but the same modes return and didn't add any bonus songs to the game which is dissapointing. The graphics in this are good but with an 80's skin put on-well except the lead guitar player. Speaking of players, when you first start the game, you only have five characters and one unlockable character. The soundtrack is okay, consisting of bands such as Extreme, X, The Romantics, Twisted Sister, White Lion, and Quiet Riot. I was suprised to not have Guns n Roses in the game, and seriously, is Metal Health the best Quiet Riot song? C'mon, Redoctane. If you're one of those people that has to play every song Redoctane throws out there, you should buy it, but the rest of us are better off skipping the 80's altogether.

What our customer's say!
"Never Buy", Being a big fan of the game, and being born in the 80s, I was looking to this game. But then I picked it up, new for $50, and I wished I never got this game. Do not, NEVER, buy this game, rent it first. No extra songs, that was te biggest let down. Then the controls are broken beyond help. Do not buy this game, I can not say this enought. Get one of the newer games, they are alot better.

"What a letdown...", After Guitar Hero revolutionized the video game industry and Guitar Hero II made it even better, an 80s edition should have been a blast.
The first clue is that the game wasn't labeled Guitar Hero III - it was "Encore." Okay, so it's like an expansion pack. But it's still full price. Still, I gave it a whirl.
As is the case with the previous two installments, the songs are all covers. Some are 80s icons and done really well - "Burning for You," "Radar Love," "Turning Japanese." But many are done poorly - as a classic metal fan, I was sorely disappointed with the Iron Maiden classic "Wrathchild" being, in a word, terrible.
Remember all that extra stuff you could buy in GH2? Yeah, it's not here. I played the game on medium and unlocked almost everything - Grim Ripper and a few guitars. There's no extra songs or costumes.
Basically, this is a GH2 expansion pack marketed as a stand-alone game. There's enough here to keep you occupied for an afternoon, but then it's back on the shelf while you play any other version of Guitar Hero because Rock the 80s has so little to offer. Unless you really like the 80s or just need to complete the Guitar Hero collection, pass this abortive effort over.
"best of the 80's!!!", Before owning this game I felt like 80's music was 'techno, pop, and cheesy' then my mom bought me this game (since i am a HUGE fan of the Guitar Hero series). After the first twenty minutes of playing, I was proven wrong.
The soundtrack is great, out of all the games I have the 2nd highest number songs downloaded on my iPod from it's soundtrack (the highest one is the songs from GH3). Also I was proved wrong again by the character designs, yes you can represent punk rock without having a mohawk, and yes Judy Nails looks good with big hair. And I actually found myself singing along to a lot of the songs.
Yes, most of the songs arn't the origional master tracks (Police Truck, Only A Lad, Holy Diver, Turning Japanese, Radar Love, etc.) but Wavegroup did an amazing job at making them sound like the origionals (in my opinion their Police Truck was better than the Dead Kennedy's origional).
I was dissapointed with the stages, they were identical to those in GH2 but with bright colors, but overall I'm a very happy customer!!!
"Love the 80's", All in all we like the game. I purchased GH3 for my wife and then got her this game as she was a teen in the 80's. She says that its a little bit short for game play but she likes the music. Also she has fun playing it.
Its a good game for beginners
"Geat Idea, Poor Execution - Don't bother.", This game is a great idea and one that I've been looking forward to, however the actual execution of the game is really poor. I find that in most cases the music doesn't match the note-target thingys. No, I'm not talking about the abundant music-sync issues, I'm talking about the music not matching the targets you have to hit - so much so that for me, the game is totally not enjoyable. I know the songs in the game, intimately, and it's really off. Red Octane probably knows this and didn't really want to advertise this disgrace tot he product line.
Overall very un-enjoyable way to spend a few hours (not to mention $). It's a shame. Perhaps Red Octane should produce a 'Folk Song Hero' or maybe a 'Disco Hero', it couldn't be any worse.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Fun but way overpriced.", I have confirmed that this game is so totally not worth its retail price tag ($49.99 last time I was at Best Buy, I think it might be about $5.00 cheaper on Amazon). I guess I'll start with the negatives because those are easier to remember.
-There are only 30 songs total, as opposed to the previous games' 58 tracks. There are no unlockable tracks that you can buy in the store. You get the set 30 and that's it. -Way too many obscure songs. I recognized most of the bands, but some of the songs they chose from certain bands are most definitely not their recognizable hits. Even some of the encores (which are supposed to be the super secret awesome songs that everybody knows and loves) were disappointing. Who the heck is Limozeen, anyway? -While it's great that they got master tracks for The Warrior and I Wanna Rock (two of the better songs on the game), the master tracks on those songs fade out. Live bands don't fade out. It kind of killed my Rock Star mood when I discovered those two songs faded out. Surely they could have managed decent covers of those two songs with creative endings to compensate for the fade-out. -Speaking of covers, I understand that the original version of Ballroom Blitz by Sweet did not come out in the 80s, but trying to throw in a cover of a crappy cover by freakin' Krokus was lame. They should have just picked a different song. -The extras are limited. As I said, there are no extra songs to buy in the store. All the guitars you can buy in the store are the same as the guitars you can buy in GH3, as are all the skins for those guitars. The only other thing you can buy in the stores besides guitars and skins is an extra character, the Grim Ripper. There are no extra styles or outfits to buy for the characters. They have one 80s style, and that's it. -While the playable characters were altered into 80s style clothing and hair, the stock band members were not. They all look the same as the previous GH games. -The venues are not noticeably different. The only main change I noticed was that the venue that was the Vans Warped Tour in previous games changed to something called Rock for Safety, or something like that. -The gameplay seems easier, which makes the lower levels somewhat boring. The only song I didn't 5-star on the first try was Seventeen by Winger on Medium, and that was more because I was distracted by something rather than the difficulty of the song. Perhaps Hard will still be difficult enough for me, but the way things have gone so far, I wouldn't be surprised if I actually try to play Expert. -Lack of songs with female vocalists, which may just be a testament to the state of rock bands in the 80s (or ever). But still, if I'm remembering correctly there were only 3 songs out of the 30 that had female vocalists.
Now for the positives. Yeah, this list will probably be shorter, but the game is still good overall. It's just overpriced.
-It's still fun. It's Guitar Hero. It's addictive and fun, and there is really only one song I dislike enough to only play in order to advance through the levels--Krokus's cover of Ballroom Blitz. I don't mind the other songs at all and would be fine playing them multiple times if I needed to in order to get 5 stars. -The 80s styles for the characters are pretty fun. I like the Grim Ripper's 3-D glasses. :op
Okay, yeah, definitely a short list. The game is definitely worth playing. It's just not worth buying for $50. I would suggest renting it or if you absolutely must own it, wait until you can find a really cheap used copy.
"Rock the 80's", Very good game..I have only recently gotten into Guitar Hero, my wife is a huge fan of the series and she got me into playing them. This is by far my favorite of the 3 that I have played. (have not played GH3 yet) Like all the GH series, its fairly easy to pick up if its your first try, and they have a very good selection of songs from the era. If you like the GH series, you will love Encore. If you are new to the series, I would recommend starting off with GH1 and working your way up, because they get a little more difficult as you move up. But all in all.. a very fun game that I would recommend to people.
"Buy this last, it's half a game by comparison", My brother in law happened to have this sitting around and let us have it. It's just like Guitar Hero 2 except it about half the game. It has less songs, and no extra songs you can buy. It has half the characters and the ones it does have are just new outfits on the guitar hero 2 characters. It has a bunch of good songs on it, but it's value should be about 1/2 of a full game since it took about as much work to make as an expansion pack. Think of it as an expansion pack for Guitar Hero 2.
"One Word: LAZY", When this first came out, I almost bought it, but at the last second I changed my mind and rented it later. I'm glad I did.
This game is nothing but GH2 with 80's window dressing. I mean, the opening sequence is EXACTLY THE SAME, only the characters are now sporting 80's styles. As soon as I saw that, I got a bad feeling, and it only got worse from there. Everything--and I do mean EVERYTHING--is right out of GH2. I couldn't even make it through the first round before quitting in digust. This is nothing but pure laziness on the creators' part, just a desperate attempt to milk some more money out of this franchise.
"Guitar Hero 80s", This game appears to be easy at first but I am failing songs on Hard and have just a few racked up for Extreme. It's got a great song selection if you are a fan of 80s music. It's a good game. Graphics and concepts much more simple but still very fun.
