What our customer's say!
"Huge upgrade from an unpowered subwoofer system.", I've owned this product for just over a year and I love it.
It replaced a fairly standard subwoofer from my home theater "in-a-box" system, and the old unit did not have a separate power supply.
The difference is purely amazing. I've had all my friends over to demonstrate it with great movie action sequences such as Star Wars lightsaber battles and the D-Day scene from Saving Private Ryan, and they all want one.
I bought it mainly for movies, but I've also been impressed by its performance with video games. Background music is very much enhanced with good bass.
It has two "modes". One is what I call standby, in which the unit turns on (with an approximate 4 second "warmup") when its gets a signal and turns off after a few minutes of not receiving signals. I normally leave it on in this mode to conserve power.
The other mode is the "always on", in which it actively stays on until you turn it off. I've used this sparingly when I have situations where the sub repeatedly turns on and off. This occurs when I watch movies at low volume and the sub signals are below the threshold of staying on, and/or when a movie has an extended length without a bass track.
I can imagine that more expensive subwoofers can pump out more volume and have more options, etc. But until I can spend a grand on a true audiophile-type receiver, I honestly don't think most of us average folks need much more than this excellent unit. Highly recommended.
"This sub can't be beat for the price", I bought this subwoofer to supplement the shelf system I was using for my XBOX 360. The shelf system sounded great but lacked any serious bass reproduction. After some research I found this sub, and after reading so many positive reviews I ordered it.
The speaker level inputs and speaker outputs made hook up to my shelf system a breeze.
My first piece of advice is shop around. I found the price to vary by almost $50 from the highest price to the lowest price on the net.
Secondly, keep your expectations at the right level. I'm not going to say keep them down, but keep in mind the price point of this sub. In my application it's perfect. Explosions on COD4 and COD World at War rock the house. Guitar Hero sounds great, and when my son plays Kung Fu Panda there is a 'boom!' and the floor vibrates when Po uses Panda Stomp. When the levels are kept low to moderate level, this sub shines. If you try to push it too hard it gets muddy. It has plenty of "oomph' behind it to accentuate any low frequency explosions, gunshots, etc., etc. in movies or video games. This sub fills in the bottom end that my shelf system was lacking perfectly.
For music it does well, but again if you try to push it too hard it will get muddy. You really don't need to push it that hard though as it easily fills our basement with bass and is plenty loud for our applications and space. Again, it fills in the bottom end of the sound spectrum nicely.
The only real complaint I have is the shelf speakers after running through the sub are not as loud as they were when ran as a stand alone system directly from the head unit. This really isn't a big deal, instead of playing music on a volume level of 8 we now have to turn it up to 11. It will still get loud enough that it can be heard outside the house (glad the neighbor is cool) so this isn't a huge issue.
Overall I give it 5 stars for our needs. I couldn't be more happy for what I got for the price I paid.
"A good value, but might not satisfy music enthusiasts", I purchased this subwoofer recently for use in my office because the bookshelf speakers I'm using just didn't have enough low-end extension to really be worth using by themselves (I used headphones almost constantly because of it).
The subwoofer is pretty simple. Decent build quality, no flaws in the veneer, and straightforward amplifier controls. The driver itself looks somewhat cheap (protruding tinsel leads and a cardboard dustcap), so I leave the grill on mine, but overall a fairly handsome package.
The controls are simple, but effective: Amplifier gain, crossover (no bypass), 0/180 phase switch, and a manual/auto "power save" switch. The auto sensing turn on circuit takes a bit too much to get it to turn on and shuts off too quickly, in my opinion (as well as producing a click sound when it turns on and off, which can get annoying for watching programs that don't have a lot of low frequency stuff to keep the sub busy), however turning your subwoofer output up should alleviate this.
Anyway, the sound. The woofer is rated to get down to 28hz, but let's be honest, no entry-level subwoofer at this price is going to give you honest output at that frequency. At high volume, it will certainly play a 28hz note (I got audible output down to about 26hz by playing pure tones only at high volume), however, the usable range in my room would probably be about 35hz, with strong output down to 40hz.
The output is a bit peaky - I played with a few positioning options, however I could never get rid of a couple of frequency peaks, one at about 55hz and one at about 80hz, and it would take equalization to fully correct these. However, I got it to mesh acceptably with my Infinity bookshelf speakers (5" woofers) by turning the crossover down to 60hz. After reading another review for this product, I tried someone's experimental "mod" of stuffing a t-shirt into the port, and it did indeed increase transient response and got rid of some of the woofer's boomy character. After the "mod," I turned the gain up slightly and set the crossover to 80hz. It blends much better, sounds richer, and is just more engaging to listen to.
I'm giving this subwoofer three stars, as it is a good value if you're looking to add a lower octave to bookshelf speakers for a casual listening environment, however I don't think this subwoofer would be sufficient for larger speakers. 4-6" woofers would probably be alright, but anything larger than that and this would struggle to keep up. For my uses, this is more of a stopgap. Decent performance, great price - just don't expect any miracles.
"Nice subwoofer", good sound in my home theater system. Right price and quality. This speaker is heavy! I would recommend it highly.
"Fantastic!!!", I bought this sub, after I found out I needed a powered sub for my Sony recevier. This is my first actual home theater system and this sub completed it! It's a great buy if you mostly watch movies or play games. I haven't played music through it yet, but it should work just fine. The sub, recevier and my 42" plasma will eventually go to my room when I get a house and get my DLP, but for now it's fantastic!

Read this reviews before You buy...
"You Get What You Pay For", I'm no pretentious audiophile, but I love my movies and my music. I gave this sub a shot based on the reviews and the fact that I was on a REAL tight budget; I'm going to have to split with the crowd on this one: If all you want is RUMBLE, then this is the ticket. It is literally a Boom box. HOWEVER, a subwoofer is not just supposed to make the walls shake - it's supposed to accurately reproduce low frequency sound. this is important for listening to music. The Sony did not do this for me. I played with the crossover settings, volume, and placement. I ended up leaving it on extremely low settings because all it was good for was rumbling. It was not tight, and did not really fill in low frequencies until cranked - which of course just meant lots of boom boom boom.
If all you want is cheap rumble for your HT then this may work, but if you also want accurate, tight bass for your music (and really, a decent sub should be able to do both), then look elsewhere.
"Forget the Cheap Price - Good Subwoofer", I purchased the Sony Sub specifically b/c it was cheap and had good reviews. I must say I was not disappointed. I purposly waited a little while after I received it so that I wouldn't still be in the "honeymoon phase" of the purchase.
I am using this sub as a compliment to my outdoor system. It is not specifically rated for outdoors, but I've got it in a protected environment under a porch and sitting under a bench I built around it. You can't even see it. People are amazed at the sound of my tiny little outdoor speakers until I tell them about the sub. It's very nice and adds a great punch.
Good things: nice level and frequency cut-off adjustments. Really allowed some fine tuning. GREAT bass. I am purposly trying to omit "for the price" from this review b/c it is not great bass for the price, it's just great bass! I have a POLK Audio home theater system with a nice sub. As soon as I got this one I put it in the POLK's place and put on some music. Very nice, comparable sound to the much more expensive POLK. I'll admit, once you got way up on sound the little Sony just couldn't hang with my POLK, but you had to get way up there! And it wasn't even broke in yet. Plus, you could buy four Sony's for the price of that other sub and you'd have WAY MORE! Unless you are planning on knocking pictures off the wall or this is the anchor for some high quality home theater room, this one will put out the bass. It filled my 2500 sq ft. home, no problem. It fills the back yard too.
Bad things: I had to piddle a little with it regarding the auto-on. It seemed to want a little much to get it going, but once it gets turned on, it stays there. Kinda weird, but definately okay. It's just at really low volumes(light background music for dinner parties), it doesn't kick on. But once you get it on by turning up the volume a little, it will continue to play back at those low volumes. If I'd known this before, I'd purchased it anyway.
Thats it. Only one small bad thing for this whole purchase. Very nice job, Sony.
"Simply Incredible", I just got this subwoofer and wow! The bass is deep and clear, it makes a nice rumble. For the cost of the item, you get double if not triple that back in sound quality. It is not too big and bulky like some woofers tend to be.
If you want a great subwoofer for your home theater system, this is the one to buy. Amazing bass for music and movies. This is a must have subwoofer for home audio.
Also recommended: Sony SS CR-3000 surround system.
"For what I paid it's more than I could ask for!", I won't try to snow anybody here. I don't expect a one hundred dollar sub woofer to outperform a four hundred dollar model. For what I was trying to accomplish, it more than does the trick. My system is a mix of old and new; old KLH speakers (that still sound really good) paired with a 2 yr. old Hitachi HDTV, Panasonic DVD recorder, and a XBOX 360, all run by a Sony STR-DG510 receiver. I can't get over how much better this powered sub sounds vs. my old passive sub. I have it in what I call an "open room" meaning there's only one wall to place components against along with the sub. I tell you I've heard more expensive systems but this one really gives them a run for the money. If you're looking to add an economical sub woofer at a price you can live with (I got mine for eighty bucks as an open box item) I think you could hardly do better than this unit. I'm satisfied.
"Good Subwoofer, Great Price", I bought this sub for my dad, he has a good receiver and two Bose sound reflecting speakers and plans to add more. But he had no sub so when I bought him a turntable I took my sub over to see if he would want one. He did and I looked around for the best deal and best product. Found it here with Amazon and Sony. My dad is a little older so he didn't want booming bass just enough to fill out the sound. This sub delivers on both ends, it is loud enough that he only has it turned half way up and it still produces great bass. The entergy saving option is nice but not used, since I hooked the power cord to the receviers AC port. Nice style and design, good features, and great sound makes this an ideal purchase for someone wanting some bass for little money.
