"A powerful and amazing film " This is a fine piece of drama. It's sad, moving, stirring, involving and thought provoking. It has some very harrowing presentations of the two wars involved, and it can stand against the best war films ever made.
A truly excellent film.
"Powerful and deep" A powerful film based in the brutal reality of early 20th century Ireland and the struggle for independence. The major problem? Without a good background in the struggle for Irish independence, the major players of the time, and the prevailing attitudes of the period, it may be difficult to grasp the fuill meaning of the film.
"What a powerful film" Many of us have Irish roots, and have been to the Republic of Ireland many times, and seen the emergence in recent years of the "Celtic Tiger." We have watched films about the fight for Irish independence from England in the early 20th Century, but "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" may be the most powerful and moving yet. Its ensemble cast is magnificent, including Cillian Murphy as Damien.
Ireland shared a kinship with the American colonies in its fight against the cruelty and subjugation of the British crown. Just like the American patriots who spurned any compromises with England short of total freedom, this film graphically records the Irish fight for that cherished goal--with brother sometimes pitted against brother, not unlike the American Civil War.
Some of us have Scottish roots and have been there too; and some day Scotland may be totally independent, like William Wallace fought for centuries ago. It is moving in that direction, peacefully.
The courageous American actor Sylvester Stallone said in an interview more than 20 years ago: "A survivor is someone who has to be somewhat of a loner and listen to his own inner voice. And the most important thing . . . a survivor has is to be able to take a totally desperate, negative, horrendous, pessimistic situation and turn it into a positive. And that can happen."
It happened with the American and Irish patriots. And it happens each and every day in the United States today when courageous men and women stand up and fight against injustices, especially those involving governmental functionaries who engage in prosecutorial misconduct and other unconscionable abuses.
"Quick ship - Perfect Condition" Outstanding! Acting, directing, casting, etc. the best. I may be biased since my grandmother on my father's side came from Ireland to marry my grandfather, but I think not!! From stories I've heard and histories I've read about the Irish Revolution and the Irish Civil War, this movie is on target. The British were savage in their treatment of the Irish; and the Irish were savage in their treatment of the British and then of their own. This movie has something for everyone - history, action, war, love story...Outstanding!
"Wind That Shakes the Barley" The Wind That Shakes the BarleyExcellent movie and seems to be as true to life as you could see in a film. It presented the conflicting emotions of the people at that time in a very realistic way. The film made the historical events of the time seem much more personal and therefor the pain, suffering, sense of loss and triumph much more real.

What our customer's say!
"the irish had it right", the irish had it right as to how to kick out the colonial brits from their country. that is the only way to kick out the brutal exploiter/oppressor. and contrary to popular perception, the brits didn't exit india due to gandhi's ahimsa (non-violence) - but as a british diplomat revealed a few years back it was due to the rebellion of indian soldiers (who formed the bulk of the british army in india) in the naval mutiny and increasing popularity of the indian national army of subash chandra bose. even as they rule the brits had a similar pattern to their exit - divide and conquer. so no surprise that after their exit the irish turned on each other just like the hindus and muslims did in india.
"A Brief Opinion", I'm fortunate enough to have studied the struggles of the Irish, and to call many Irish people my friends, and to have visited their country many times, and on account of that, and as a follower of Irish history it's hard for me to view this movie through naive eyes. It is one of my top 5 favorite films. It is harsh and brutal. It is the only movie to ever make me want to tear at my hair and sob (and I am not the sort of person to feel this way about much of anything). What I see in this film is a beautiful and tragic tale of a people so determined to have their freedom, unwilling to give in, to accept defeat in order to alleviate suffering. The film shows what the Irish people are still in some ways torn between; Catholics vs. Protestants, The North vs. the Republic. Loyalists vs. Nationalists. It's all one in the same in most regards, but I would think that for anyone who doesn't know the history that the movie would still be great because it's a FASCINATING tale and might only make you want to type a few questions into google in order to educate oneself further and there is nothing at all wrong with a movie which leaves you with a feeling such as that. The Wind That Shakes the Barley is worthy of watching for any adult... It's different, it's engrossing, it's impassioned, it's everything you could ask for from a movie, except much laughter... I recommend it to every person I know. It is a brilliant film, not the usual Hollywood junk food.
"great but sad", I enjoyed this movie very much and felt that it pulled at the heart strings of Ireland's sad history. Events very much like this took place at the early part of the 1900's and was condoned by the British government. Well acted and portrayed
"Brother Against Brother", Set in the early 1920s, "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" tells the story of two Irish brothers at first united in the struggle for independence from England, but ultimately torn apart by the civil strife that followed. Damien (Cillian Murphy) is a bright medical student who, on his way to study in London, witnesses British atrocities and chooses instead to stay home and join the resistance group led by his brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney). Despite his initial reluctance to get involved in the fighting, Damien grows increasingly steadfast and unyielding in his Republican (and Marxist) convictions. Damien's unwavering allegiance to his ideals places him in a heartbreaking position--at one wrenching point in the film, making him the executioner of a lifelong friend.
The deepest tragedy comes after the IRA signs a truce with England, splitting former comrades into opposing camps. Some, like Teddy, hail the truce as a victory they do not want to jeopardize with continued violence. However, the agreement falls short of granting Ireland full independence, and in Damien's eyes, accepting it means "selling out" the martyrs who died for true autonomy. In the ensuing turmoil, brother turns against brother with heartrending results.
Powerful performances by Murphy, Delaney, and Orla Fitzgerald (Sinead, a participant in the resistance who falls in love with Damien) make "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" an affecting film. The movie shows the very personal consequences of the political rift in Ireland, while imparting the positions of both sides in a nuanced manner. A beautiful soundtrack and enchanting scenery create a haunting backdrop.
"The Wind That Shakes the Barley ", A beautiful film. I love being able to find things on Amazon that are just plain hard to find anywhere else. The seller provided it as promised and well within the shipment window promised.

"Childish and one-dimensional", This film is a one-dimensonal account of the Irish war of independence and subsequent civil war in the 1920s. Every character is constructed as a childish stereotype and the result is less a film about what happened in Ireland than an account of Irish self-mythology about the conflict.
The real historical events are not so easy to deal with. In a few years, Ireland went from relative stability to a total breakdown in order which caused the british to leave. The answer to how that happened isn't as easy as young educated doctors seeing british atrocities on their train trips. Nor is there an easy answer why, on attaining independence, that Ireland should degenerate into civil war.
On a technical and craft level, the film is far better than the script it has to work with. It could have been a great film if those involved had been able to rise up above jingoistic patriotism.
Basically, if you want a rah-rah patrotic epic of heroic ireland without any doubts, attention to history, difficult questions or ambiguity, you will like this film.
"Not for every citizen of the world.", Great film, a piece of Irish history covering part of the critical years of struggle for independence from the U.K. The absence of well-known movie stars makes it less attractive to the usual moviegoer. Besides, ignorance of European History is certainly a shortcoming as few people in the world know that the British and the Irish are different ethnic groups and that the U.K. dominated Ireland for centuries and did its best to destroy its culture. If you are of Irish stock, you'll probably rate it 10/10. Myself, 8/10.
"Not balanced enough", One of the most interesting "Irish" films of the past few years. A very deep exploration of the IRA/Republican conflict. Despite some attempts at balance, the film seems to favor the IRA view of the conflict, especially at the end of the film. It is helpful to listen to the director's commentaries to better understand his point of view. It may surprise viewers that much of the dialogue was improvised, the improvision helps make the film seem more real.
"The Wind That Shakes the Barley", A superb movie of tough days in Ireland - wonderful acting - great and captivating action and scenes. Highly recommended.
"Powerful but confusing", I have a fair knowledge of Irish history and gained even more last year when I visited Ireland. I had heard good things about this movie. I found it so brutal (probably realistically so) but focused on such a small portion of the Irish troubles (in just County Cork) that it was hard to follow.
The acting was excellent in this sad and tragic movie. I could have done with a bit less political preaching about 2/3 of the way through the movie, but it was worth watching.
