Others say...
"Top-rate receiver at a reasonable price" I purchased the Onkyo to be the centerpiece of a home theater. My requirements were THX-certified (this one is Select2), TrueHD processing, and the ability to upconvert video sources to 1080p. The Onkyo had it all. Setup using the Audyssey system was a breeze, and while I cannot vouch for the video quality (46" LCD is the next piece), the sound on music, movies, and TV are excellent. I'm currently running a 5.1 channel setup with the bi-amped Infinity Beta 50's as my front mains, and the system was able to compensate nicely so that they do not overpower my smaller, rear-channels satellites. In movies, every sound detail is reproduced with excellent clarity, and with nice, even distribution of the bass from the Sony subwoofer. After the new TV is installed, I'll be hooking it up to a second receiver to create a Zone 2 and the system will be very nice - and it all started with the receiver. Definitely recommend this system!
"Great receiver" This the first new receiver I have have purchased in about 15 years. I love everything about it except the manuel. Once you get it figured out and set up it's a A+......
"A decent value, but underpowered" For the price, this is a reasonably competent introductory AV receiver that supports multiple HDMI inputs.
There are, however, some material drawbacks:
The menu system is rough and somewhat awkward. You'd think they could do a better job given all the resolution available, and considering most people will hook this up to a large HD, but really, out of my entire setup (Tivo, Xbox360, DVD player, SR705) this clearly has the worst menu interfaces of the group.
Worst of all (in my view) it just lacks OOMPH. My previous reciever, an Outlaw 1050, had ostensibly 30% power per channel than this unit... and yet... this stereo can't get much that far above "normal TV" audio levels before its volume tops out. (And yes, the Outlaw sounded great at those higher volume levels. If I normally watch TV in the 40-50 range on the volume controls, it maxes out at 75 or so... not a distortion or power issue, it simply doesn't seem to turn up any higher (and the volume limiter is not turned on.)
I don't turn my stereo up very often but it's disappointing to know I've lost that ability with this new receiver, and I have to wonder how it affects the responsiveness at more normal listening levels. I'm definitely considering the 705 a "bridge" purchase intended to keep my system running until I can buy something better rather than a long term solution.
(As for the Outlaw, it finally gave out after over 7 years of daily use. I think that's about as much I can ask from an electronics product.)
"no regrets"
I spent alot of time doing research. I've owned the unit for about 6 months now. It's great. I won't go through all the technical info but simply state that for $400 and change it's a great value. I have absolutely no regrets. It's a quality unit.
"Great THX Receiver for the Money" Having conducted a lot of research and read many reviews I determined that the 705 was the right choice for me. I have not regretted it. For the money, it offers by far the most features, and the sound quality is fantastic for my needs.
Cons: - Purchasing it used through Amazon's warehouse, left me without a remote (although not advertised as such). It is impossible to operate without one and they cost 60 dollars to replace. - The complexity of set-up could prove bothersome to those who are not audiophiles or hold an audio engineering degree. It's not a beginner level set-up. - The receiver does produce some heat, but it is to be expected for the amount of processing it conducts, and is nothing compared to a plasma tv.
Pros: - The multiple HDMI inputs are tremendous for reducing the complexity of changing input. My wife can now operate the home theater with the press of a single button. - The multiple listening modes should satisfy anyone's ears as there are so many, and the sound quality on each is good. - The Audysee automatic speaker tuning is remarkable! Set it and forget it. - The on-screen menu is easy to navigate and simple to use.

What our customer's say!
"Not as clear as it should be", When comparing to a pioneer vx27thx it does not have the sound quality you I would have expected for hdmi connections and 7.1 sound. The clarity was just not there even with a blue ray player. It did not have the crispness or bass for quality sound reproduction even with all klipsch speakers it was not good. The only good thing was the microphone that eases the speaker calibration.Thank God that amazons return policy is THE BEST!!!!!
"Great receiver.", I don't know much about receivers but this ones got everything you could need. 3 HDMI, xm/sirius and a phono stage.
"dollar value +", HAVE ONLY HAD THIS UNIT FOR 30 DAYS AND IT IS VERY SATISFACTORY AND SEEMS TO BE THE BEST $ VALUE. I DO FEEL THAT ONKYO. SHOULD HAVE PROVIDED A MUCH BETTER VENTILATION FAN, AS THE UNIT GETS QUITE HOT. I PURCHASED A FAN THAT I PLACED ON THE TOP OF THE UNIT AND IT HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM. INCOMING & OUT GOING CIRCULATION WAS NEEDED!!!!
"Great receiver", I got this receiver to work with the Samsung Plasma TV I bought here as well...needless to say, to all who are audiophiles or not, this is the BEST receiver for the money...the functions are out of this world, and it's easy to integrate with all your components...no need to look further or pay more...this is an awesome product!
"Maximum Features But Best Used Minimally", The Onkyo 705 receiver does some things extremely well, but does have some weaknesses which stand out. This is a wonderful receiver if you are able to sidestep the weaknesses. STRONG POINTS: (1) Outstanding analogue audio performance - the analogue preamp is clean as a whistle and very natural although not very "warm sounding" if that appeals to you. (2) A huge roster of features - the automated setup is really great. WEAK POINTS: (1) The digital sound processing sounds quite bad in my system - congested and artificial - so you should absolutely try to keep it in "Direct" mode when using analogue inputs. Yamaha DSP is far superior. (2) The remote control is huge, clunky and ergonomically poor. (3) Power output is clean but limited - use the preamp outputs to external amps if at all possible, which will also reduce the heat emitted. (4) The setup menus are confusing, although once you set it up, you hopefully can forget about that. Overall, this is a great receiver if you can stay within its limits.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Best Quality receiver for the money!", I bought this receiver after a long research period and found this to be the best receiver for the money. I had considered a yamaha receiver (663or863) but the features on the onkyo had me sold. The onkyo had more HDMI inputs and was THX certified. The sound quality is great since I paired it up with the definitive technology Procinema 600. I recommend this receiver to anyone that wants a quality receiver for a good price.
"CUSTOMER SERVICE/WARRANTY SUCKS", I purchased this receiver 4 months ago. Started having some issues after a storm, mainly related to the remote control. After calling their customer service, I was told that I would have to ship the unit, and of course pay for it to a location in Corpus Christie, TX. (I live in Dallas) They were not helpful at all to me in solving the problem which was under warranty. Please think about it. Why would Onkyo choose a warranty repair facility in the farthest away location in Texas with a very small population when they could have chosen one with a much greater population concentration such as Dallas, Houston, etc.. I think they want you to not want to ship it, so basically NO WARRANTY! Onkyo 705 may be a good enough product, but if you need their warranty, you are out of luck.
"A lot of Power & Functions for a low price", After a considerable amount of research and investigating several different Home Theater options such as HTIB, Bose 321, and high end and low end component solutions, I finally stumbled across the HDMI Onkyo Home Theatre line. This was the only affordable option that included all of the functions that I was looking for (7.1, On Board lossless signal decoding, Multi HDMI connectivity and pass thru, power, etc.). It's been 10 months, and the unit has yet to disappoint. I have several components hooked up to this receiver: a Denon upconverting dvd player, Samsung LNT4665 Flat Panel, Verizon's lame motorola box (all connected via HDMI) a PS2 (via component cables) and a cd changer (via composite). Switching between these components is a simple press of the remote. I've had no handshaking issues. A word of caution is that this unit gets really hot. I had to relocate it to a separate section of my home theatre console, so it had plenty of top clearance. I'm currently running as a 5.1 system; paired up with two Polk Monitor 50 speakers, a Polk CSi3 Center Speaker, two cheap surrounds (until I can pick up the Polk Dipoles), and a Sub. Whether it is music or movie sound tracks, this system rocks. I can clearly hear the highs and lows without any problems. Our neighbor spent a thousand on a high end receiver from Best Buy that has the same functionality and performance as this one. for the same money, I was able to pick up some new speakers.
"Good product.", Runs cool. Setup is relatively simple. Integrated easily with my Samsung DLP, Samsung DVD, and DirecTV receiver. Product met all of my expectations. I have used this product for 7 months with no problems.
"Fabulous!", Based on the reviews on Amazon and CNET, I bought this one and I am extremely pleased with the receiver. It's simply superb.
