"Harvest Moon meets Finial Fantasy"
As always I appreciate the great service from Amazon.

I purchased this game for my 12 year old daughter. She has all the harvest moon games for PS1, PS2 Came cube and Game boy Advance and loved them all, so when I seen this one I knew it would be something she would love because it reminded me of the Final Fantasy games her sister played. When she began to play the game, that was her first comment. It was Harvest Moon Meets Final Fantasy.

My Daughter said this game rocks!

"A great reworking of a tired franchise"
Natsume doesn't usually do much to improve the Harvest Moon series that much. This is a very competent re-working of a franchise desperately in need of innovation. In addition, controls and the interface are top notch as well. I hope they continue to innovate the series as this has been one of my faves since the old SNES days.

"This game had almost everything i love to do"
what can i say, this game has everything i love to do..growing vegetables, making food, making medicines, crafting armor and weapons, fishing, fighting monsters, having pets, making friends, collecting things, doing quest, different outcome depending on how one plays... I just hope they release English versions of the sequel!

"Rune Factory"
If you are a fan of Harvest Moon games, you will like
this game. It's rather different in that there is some
fighting and exploration involved and instead of the
traditional farm animals, you have monsters in your
monster houses (barns) which you tame during your exploration
of the local caves. Some of the monsters provide milk,
eggs, etc., others simply accompany you and provide
back-up during the fighting sessions.

"Rune factory"
All the things that took forever in the other harvest moon games, like building friendships, taking care of animals, and having stuff built on your farm are now a LOT faster, which is awsome. The festivals however are not that interactive, and you cant swim at the beach :( and you cant even see your character in the hot spring which is annoying. But its pretty cool, the dungeons can be hard, but as long as you bring lots of supplies you should be fine, and its easy to make money!

"A Good Take on HM", The Great:
It's an entirely new spin on Harvest Moon, adding a RPG feel to the game. But don't worry, you can still farm and such, and have that be your sole profits (but you still have to capture the monsters in the caves).

There is now a level system in addition to upgrading your weapons, so you can get good just by practicing, and then upgrade your weapons when you have the money.

I love how monsters can work on your farm, so you can hire them to water and harvest crops for you, enabling you to focus more on mining, fishing, raising said monsters, exploring, et cetera. (It's really hard to go back to an old HM game after using this feature.)

The Good:
You can now raise what are basically, bees, giant chickens, sheep, and cows. In addition, there are animals that can come into dungeons with you and fight by doing damage or various status effects, while others can water and harvest crops.

There are many more skills, and once you expand your house you can become somewhat self-sufficient, although mastering them will take a long time, so the game stays challenging.

The marriage and friendship system is entirely reworked; instead of buying your friends with endless gifts, performing tasks for them and talking to them is what gets you more hearts. (EG, the witch girl, Melody, is happy if you go to her bathhouse every day, and the elven girl, Tabitha, falls in love with you if you care for your monsters well.) You can still give gifts if you wish, but it's no longer necessary. There are also many bonus scenes just for befriending people, so you don't just get videos for dating.

The Town is quite large, and offers many characters with nice dialogue strings, as well as audio dialogue.

The plot lines can be unlocked in some different ways for the minor ones, but generally you must expand your farm and clear caves to progress.

You can grow crops out of season by planting them in caves, which have various climates.

The music is gorgeous; fitting the game pretty perfectly.

The Bad:
You can only be a male, but there are many unique available bachelorettes.

The monster AI seriously needs some work, especially for the captured monsters. Sometimes they seem to get stuck, and they have many graphical glitches on the larger ones where they will overlap each other and clip into one another.

You can't grow trees, so you don't get a nice care-free crop. (But you can still buy apples and oranges at the shops.)

The dialogue can be misleading; the translation needed a little work. For example, many people spent all this time thinking if you grew a normal crop for over 30 days, you would get a special crop. This is not the case; there are special crops available after you beat the game that grow for 30 days (so in a cave) and they sell for more.

The sound can short in and out on certain parts; when it is raining, the sound will sometimes cut out for a few minutes out of one of the speakers or headphones (I have seen this happen on both the DS and DS Lite, with different games, so it is a programming error).

The Ugly:
As with the other games, not much ethnic diversity in the game, save for one self girl.

Good or Bad, up for Debate:
Still, you can only marry girls, but since this game doesn't have the option of being a female, you don't have to run two game accounts to unlock all the scenes.

The Fantasy aspect is nice, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

"Role playing while building a farm", If you enjoy classic, computer-based role playing, this is an excellent value. Picture a classic, role-playing hero set in a nature-centric farming community and you're in the right ballpark.

However, there are several key differences between Rune Factory and classic role playing games. First, your character does not have a profession. Instead, he has a set of skills. Each skill increases the more often you use it.

Also, in addition to the classic hit points, you have Rune Points. As you perform any task, these decrease (however, eating food or picking up glowing "runes" increases them). When these are empty, you start using your hit points (except you cannot cast spells without Rune Points).

As your character grows, he has a huge selection of skills---forging custom weapons/shields, creating custom amulets and the likes, cooking, swordsmanship, farming, logging, fishing, monster communication and creating potions.

But, beyond the classic role playing, there is real farming to do. You can hoe the ground, plant and water seeds, then harvest the produce. There are 4 seasons---each has its own unique plants. This becomes the key to survival as you advance through the game, since the plants produce Rune Orbs which replenish your stamina.

Also, you can befriend monsters in the caves (some provide eggs and milk, others act as battle companions).

Beyond that, the game allows you to court one of several eligible single women and nurture friendships with the many townsfolk.

So, for the price, the game offers an amazing amount of depth and value.

"Pretty Awesome!", I must say I wasn't sure if I was going to like this game when I first purchased it. The idea of a not so peaceful harvest moon seemed a bit more realistic so I decided to give it a shot. Once I started playing I found that I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the challenge of the caves and the ability to grow all types of crops year round in each cave. The animals on my farm are a bit creepy though...lol.

I never got very far into creating your own weapons and items. I plan on going back and trying to revisit the game before the sequel comes out.

I couldn't give the game 5 stars; I still like the HM DS better, but this is very close. I look forward to the sequel.

"review for Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon by: Tyler Cain", I love all Harvest Moon games my favorite is "Friends of Mineral Town" but Natsume has outdone it`s self especially copared to some other Harvest Moon games. Again I love all of them but alot of them have typeo`s but having to translate it from 3 types of Japanese to English is very hard but I have found none so far in this game. Again this is a great game and very fun espescially adding the monsters and its really cool since they can halp you with your field and fight with you,(sort of like Pokemon) but I dont think its plagurism. Thanks for making yhis game Natsume 5 stars!

"Rune Factory Review", This game is AMAZING!! Sure, this game is a decendent of the Harvest Moon games, but it differs in many wonderful ways.
I love the Harvest Moon series, but this is definately the best one I've played so far. Some of the excellent new features to this game are: You get to plant crops in caves which stay the same season all year round! can the other HM games do that? Don't think so!
Also, in the cave, there are monsters. You can either fight or tame these monsters, but if you chose to fight, you'll need some weapons... You can use your farming tools, but you can also buy swords, or /make/ them if you house has been expanded. Yes, make. You can also make (or buy) potions to help you in the caves, and defence items to help you.
(Oops! Getting too into detail! Well, that's good, and bad! Bad, because you probably don't want to read a long review, but good because I think this game if so awesome I can't stop talking about it!!!) Anyway, I'll cut the rest of this short.
I really like the music, and though it is repitive, there are things added each "verse" of the song (no lyrics, of course), like another instument sound, ect. The music also changes a whole lot, so you don't listen to the same thing over and over as you explore.
Anyway, there are LOADS of things I love about this game, and I couldn't possibly list them all! So, my advice? Go buy this game right now from Amazon.com!!!

"My wife's playing it...", My wife loves these games, and now that she flew through Professor Layton, she's deep into this. Some of the controls take getting used to, but it's the classic Harvest Moon formula mixed up with some RPG and adventure elements. A must-have for Harvest Moon fans.

"Rune Factory: A Harvest Moon Fantasy & Patience", A good game for a person willing to put in the time and patience in "farming" and "logging." I play it while watching TV. It has become a bit addictive, since I do have the time and patience. This is a game that I bought a guide for, as things need to be done in the proper sequence and time to get anywhere with the peripherals. You could just do the minimum and hack your way thru the caves, but there are a lot of "daily living" features that you would miss and is really the over-all purpose of the game.

"A great game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", I bought Rune Factory several months ago, and it is a lot of fun!!
It has good Graphics, a Good storyline, and doesent get boring.

"Harvest Moon on the rocks.", basically this game is everything you love from the harvest moons of the past, minus crappy controls and camera angles, and mindless droning at the fields day by day, you gain the ability to control beasts found throughout the game that have multiple purposes.

Though it is not all an improvement, the fact that you capture these beasts in a cave makes the game much less interactive, often spending strings of days in a cave for great fortune, and there is no farm, or vineyard, or other sort of section in the town that gives you a little change on your day to day basis.

The mining aspect is a nice system, and you can make SUBSTANTIAL income early in the game through it. The monsters need work, if you set them to water your field, only one preforms at a time, and waters every tilled plot, whether there is a plant in it or not.. which wastes time and make it somewhat worthless.

The game is fun, worth a measly what, thirty some dollars, if your an addict to games you'll play it for hours, but thats like saying if you like milk you'll drink it for breakfast... Either way, if you like harvest moon.. and the gameplay of pokemon and harvest moon.. this is the byproduct of the two.

"Super freaking addictive!!!", I am someone who loves Harvest Moon games anyway, but this one takes the cake! Even though it's just for the DS, the graphics are great and the gameplay is highly addictive. Where other Harvest Moons can finally get boring when you have made more money than you can possibly spend, have bought every type of cow, crop and tree, this Harvest moon has numerous things for you to work on for awhile. There are several caves in the game, with different seasons and monsters, and you can't enter them automatically, you have to earn a pass. You can grow crops in the caves, but they have monsters, and in the second cave, the monsters are pretty tough so I am trying to work myself up to conquering that cave. Upgrading tools is much more of a processes than in the other Harvest moons so I am still working on upgrading mine. Instead of cows and chickens you have monsters for livestock, and they can do different things, like bees that make honey for you, and I have an archer monster I like to take in the caves with me to help me fight. Once a monster likes you more (you can see your rating on the menu of how friendly they are) you can get some of them to water or harvest crops for you!
There are many women to choose from for marriage this time, and you can also check your friend levels with guys on the game as well. Everyone has a friend and love level for you. You can upgrade your house but it costs $200,000 so it will be awhile before I get that much money. There are things called runes in the game that appear when you have 9 new crops to harvest, and they replenish your rune power energy. Gone are the days where you had to keep watching your farmer pause because he was too tired, and having to quit doing stuff because he was too tired! This time there is a rune meter that shows the energy you have left to do work, and when that is gone you still have your hit point gauge, so plenty of energy and if you have runes to pick up, you can extend the amount of work you do in a day. Also at 3pm you can take a bath at the bathhouse and that gives you full runepower and hitpoints.
I think this game will keep me entertained longer than other Harvest moons have, and it's so addicting I have to limit myself on what days I can play it, because once I pick it up, the evening is gone!
