Others say...
"The Lord of the Rings Online" This game is a great game to get for the whole family. I bought 2 copies and play it with my wife. It makes for a fun and entertaining value to enjoy together.
"Game great, don't buy special edition" I downloaded the game on line, it is great, and different from WoW. I bought the Special Edition box only because I wanted the "Cloth Map" stated in the description. It does not have a cloth map. Just download the file and start playing tomorrow (it's a big file).
"No cloth map, no figurine." Otherwise, great, as expected. Good alternative to the "leading" MMO, great for Tolkien fans. I was let down that the map is not cloth, just a simple fold out thats too small to be useful and doesn't have any labels or anything, and there is no figurine. I wouldn't be so let down by this omission if it was not still listed on the Amazon product description. We do get the soundtrack/making of disc it mentions though, so its still better than the standalone game, and the full color manual for this edition is brilliant (and contains most of the info you'd want on the missing map!), especially in todays market of half sheet black and white "reference" books, that usually just say to check a website anyways.
So yeah, fair warning. The game itself is good though.
"Engrossing game for Tolkien fans!" This was my first venture into MMORPG's. I have avoided them in the past due to my ADD and tendency to get so wrapped up into a game that I have been known to play 36 hrs non-stop. Having said that, this is a gem of a game with great fidelity to the world of Middle Earth as described by Tolkien. The world is vast with much to see and do. Some of the locations are simply breathtaking. What makes it fun to play are all the different quests that you encounter. some are simple & quick, others are lengthy and may require a party to complete. I can work on them a little at a time and feel very comfortable just logging on for a few minutes to do a quick task or devoting several hours to a major one. In any case I am not headed to divorce or death by exhaustion anytime soon! LOL.
"A great game if you are a PVE Player" This game is mainly PVE (Player vs Environment), and it is a lot of fun, the graphics are by far the best out there in the MMO Market. Questing is actually fun, and makes you feel like you are part of the story line. Leveling is at a nice steady pace.
Over all this game is a great MMO, and the player base seem to be more on the mature side when compared to other MMOs out there.

What our customer's say!
"Should have started this last year", I wanted to pick up LOTRO at launch but hesitantly did not. After a while, I lost interest. Flash forward to one year later, and I am now playing this amazing game. The character classes are all very well implememted. If you love questing and exploring, then this is the game for you. PvPers, should probably stay away. With the release of book 13, Turbine has added hobbies the first one being fishing. Oh and the fact that it is Tolkien's world is just icing on the cake.
"Game is great fun but "Special Edition" (collector's edition) not worth the money", Let's get this out of the way first... "I love playing LOTRO". I enjoy it so much I decided to add a second account and thought I'd purchase the Special Edition assuming that the extra items would be worth the additional cost. I must say that I was very disappointed.
It is obvious that they (Midway) tried to copy WoW's Collector's Edition, which is a nice and worthwhile special edition, but Midway did it completely on the cheap.
The Map of Middle Earth that is included is all but useless and printed on very cheap lightweight paper.
The "exclusive in-game item" you get is only useful (+1 hope) at very low levels if at all and takes a full hour before it can be used again.
The soundtrack CD is a real pain! It includes the narration from the game's cut screens so you have to hit "skip" on you CD player almost every other track if you don't want to hear all the game narration over and over. Why didn't they just put the songs on CD like WoW did on their collector's edition? It would have been MUCH better.
The DVD on how the game was made is OK but nothing special.
The back of the box also says... "EXCLUSIVE! FULL COLOR SPECIAL EDITION MANUAL". Translation, it's the same paper manual you get in the regular game but some of the pictures are in color... woot! If you were thinking beautiful color hardback book like in WoW's collector's edition think again.
All in all great game, but don't bother to spend the extra money on a "Special Edition" copy of the game, just get the regular and have a great time.
Hopefully when Midway releases its next expansion later this year it will be more of a class act.
"The Ultimate Alternative to World of Warcarft", This game was a blessing for me! i was growing tired of WoW but had tried many other MMOGs(massively multiplayer online games) but to no avail i was stuck in the realm of warcraft, though it seemingly had everything a fantasy RPG/social gamer could possibly want, there just seemed to be something missing. Thanks to Turbine(developer of LotRO) i have found that missing something! LotRO clears up all my old beefs with WoW. I now get regular almost scheduled free content updates to the game every two months, guaranteed to fix things if needed but always giving new things to do(two whole regions to explore with hundreds of quest have been added since launch), the new things added just seem better thought out than WoWs updates, high levels and low levels get new content and its not always new endgame content, we often get new factions as well as new deeds to enhance our characters. basically the updates touch the overall player base and not just the endgame and PvP crowd. Also my final WoW beef was that with its cartoony visuals and pop culture humor it was a little too immature, for me that is. This is not a problem with LotRO as it is set in Tolkiens mature themed world, where players still know how to goof off but can still feel immersed in a serious world, the balance of those two things is really quite nice. there are of course are many other things to love about LotRO and many things to love about WoW, both are amazing games, at the end of the day it is just a matter of preference. my reason for comparing LotRO to WoW is simply because as of right now WoW has the largest player base of any MMOG and i know that there are some players just like myself, itching for something else, and maybe they will find that something in LotRO just like i did. Hope to see you there!

"A Must for Tolkien Fans", I've played Final Fantasy Online, WOW, and Tabula Rasa and am a big fan of the MMOs. If you like MMOs and are a JRR Tolkien fan, then this game is a must. The game content is very accurate to the Tolkien world and the attention to detail is amazing. You can also run this game on DX10 which makes the already awesome graphics look even better. The deeds and trait system makes the customization of characters more unique than other MMOs. Pretty easy to solo and there's some pretty cool epic quests that follow the story of the LOTR story. Give the 7-day trial a shot and you won't be disappointed.
"Amazing Game", When I started playing MMORPG games the first game I heard of was of course World of Warcraft. When I finally started playing I realized that these cartoon graphics sucked. So when I heard of Lord of thee Rings Online I saw that it didn't have the cartoonish graphics I was amazed.Because most MMORPGs that I have played have cartoonish graphics. When I started playing the starting instance was a lot of fun. After that when I leveled up more there was an even distribution of thinngs unlocked over levels. I like the monster play aspect and even though you start at level 50 you still need to work to be as strong as the other level 50s'. This is probably one of the greatest MMORPGs to come out at this moment. Also even though it has only been a year since this was released it has almost double the amount of accounts created than World of Warcraft does, and World of Warcraft has been out for around 2 and a half years now.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"A must for Tolkien Fan gamer", This is an addictive game, granted; it's also a lot of fun. If you love Tolkien, you'll love the game, I think. I'm not a huge MMO person, and didn't play WoW... I really like RPG's, however, and I love Tolkien; this game suited me very well.
Perhaps too well!
"Wait to buy", This game might be better one day but right now it is still way underdeveloped. There are many issues/bugs including typos in quests that really take away the spirit of the game.
There are 2 "modes" with this game, the grind/pve/mmo action and a pvp mode called Monster play. Basically in monster play you start out with a lvl 50 monster and get to PvP with the "heros" who lvled up to 50. It sounds fun but it is full of bugs and exploits. For example on every server and for every monster there is an "armour bug" that leaves me with 20 armour(it should be nearly 300). According to the developers it may not be weeks before this is fixed, in the meantime all monsters just have to deal with an extreamly unfaur advantage. And this is only one of MANY BIG issues associated with the PvP system. I would expect it will not be another 6 months until PvP is working how it should.
I think this game was rushed to release and is now suffering in many areas. I have already cancled my subscription and will wait till I hear the game is more developed. I recommend waiting a good 6 months to buy this, it does have alot of potential, just grosley underdeveloped.
"Definitely a fun romp through LOTR", I've played a number of MMORPGs including, yup, WoW. But, let it be known that I'm not an "achiever". I could care less if I get to level 60 in 24 hours. I just want to have fun.
That being said, I think LOTRO is a very well executed game. Much like WoW (at least so far), the game is largely bug free and enjoyable out of the gate. You definitely see the usual bug/rat-killing, FedEx missions and the like but you also get a great feeling for the LOTR world and environment.
There are some innovations, like the music system, which make the gameplay different. Things like Deeds which are essentially running side quests that give you abilities or bonuses to your stats, a much better quest tracker than WoW's default one, Felloship maneuvers, Monster Play, and some interesting crafts like Farming make the gameplay more immersive and fun. There is also an instancing system which is used very well early in the game to give you the sense that the environment is changeable.
Most of the downside of the game is limited to either existing MMOG limitations (like the aforementioned bug/rat-killing and some almost laughable FedEx missions that make you feel like a tennis ball at Wimbeldon) or are minor glitches that will (hopefully) be corrected soon (like the fact that the quest list keeps collapsing when you level up or instance). The crafting system is extremely expensive but is thankfully better than Vanguard's ridiculous one.
All in all, if you're a fan of LOTR or if you are tired of WoW, this is definitely a game to try out. For MMORPG noobs, this can be a good experience, especially right now without the overly mature (read: lots of high-level experienced players) populations that EQ and WoW currently have.
"Great MMORPG!", This is one of the best MMO's available right now. The game is very polished with virtually no obvious or game-breaking bugs. Great gameplay mechanics, excellent lore, and a fairly nice variety of quests and tasks. This title has a lot of future potential - I am excited to see where Turbine takes it. The only thing missing is a real dynamic world, but unfortunately no MMO's have that yet.
"help", Actually I would have rated it 0 star if there was a 0. because I cant get it to run. I have not used it yet. I am not great on the computer but I installed it and no go. I have to wait till my son who is a genious to come over and help me. It may be a great game, it looks like a great game. After buying it I hope I will be able to play it some day. I am not happy :-(.
