"Caution on Upgrades", I ordered Indesign as an upgrade to Pagemaker. I was sent an upgrade that only works for upgrading older versions of Indesign, but not Pagemaker. I sent it back to Amazon for a full refund, but ordered the correct upgrade directly from Adobe. Adobe charges $5 for shipping, but I am sure that I will get the correct product this time.

"wonderful upgrade", Another wonderful product upgrade from Adobe. CS3 integrates more aspects from Photoshop, such as a full menu of "effects" previously available only in Photoshop. I am a professional graphic designer and use InDesign professionally every day and love it.
One downside - when printing drop shadows to pdf and some printers, the horrible faint row or missing pixels around the drop-shadowed element is back. I'm hoping that upgrades will take care of this annoyance.

"Second Reviewer Warning but for a different reason - Careful what you upgrade!", As a previous reviewer stated, be careful what you upgrade. The prior reviewer ran into difficulty because of his prior InDesign being part of a suite. There's another gotcha on the upgrade path. Be careful if you are upgrading from Pagemaker. The upgrade versions are apparently different.
Adobe has two distinct upgrade paths - Pagemaker owners (me) and another for prior versions of InDesign and CS owners. This upgrade is for the latter (non-Pagemaker) owners. I just ordered straight from Adobe in this case. Why Adobe does this is hard to understand, because the upgrade price is the same for both sets of users. Why not make one set of software recognize both user types?

The Adobe site says, "Adobe® InDesign® CS3 PageMaker® Upgrade software is an exclusive upgrade path for licensed users of Adobe PageMaker. The inclusion of popular PageMaker tools eases the transition to InDesign CS3, while enhanced typographical and graphics support helps you take your page layout to the next level."

Seems like Adobe could have just made one upgrade product for everybody, but in a nutshell, PageMaker users beware, this upgrade sold here is apparently not for us.

"Careful what you upgrade", Be careful that you meet the upgrade requirements. I own Adobe Creative Suite CS2, which includes InDesign. I needed to upgrade only InDesign. AFTER buying the product, I found out that a product that includes InDesign is not good enough. This only works with a retail copy of InDesign which is not part of a suite.

"Don't Upgrade If You Do Books", If you use InDesign for books requiring indexes, do NOT upgrade to this version. InDesign CS3 (for both Windows and Macs) has serious problems with indexing multi-document books that does not exist in CS2. It drops entries and scrambles page numbers seemingly at random, while giving no warning that something has gone wrong. Any index it produces cannot be trusted. Imagine a publisher printing 50,000 copies of a book with a defective index and you get a sense of just how dreadful this problem is. Adobe could be sued for a flaw this serious.

This bug was reported on Adobe forums back in late April, five months ago. I've talked to Adobe programmers and staff about it. They can't do any more than suggest a script that combines multiple documents into one, where the problem apparently doesn't exist. The real fix is awaiting upper management approval of a "point-release," which must mean the CS3.1 version. But this fix doesn't require a point-release. Every few weeks, Adobe's updater patches CS3 for some trivial reason, typically tweaking Adobe Bridge to sell more stock photos. They could do the same with this dreadful index bug.

Adobe CS3 contains quite a few improvements that make the upgrade worthwhile for most users. But if you create indexes from multidocument books, I suggest you wait until this problem is fixed before upgrading. And if you don't hear otherwise, that means InDesign CS3.1
