"Does the job"
I use it to record my lectures at college (with the professor's permission). It catches every word, and is easy to turn on and off in a hurry. I wish it were rechargeable and smaller, but I'm happy to have it.

"Great recorder, but have to pay extra for Player Plus 7"
I have to write minutes and don't take shorthand so a good recorder is a must. So far, Olympus recorders have proven to be the best. I purchased this recorder for its ability to export wav files playable in
Windows Media Player. My boss and I are able to share the meeting recording with my colleagues and the recorder has been able to capture the voices around the room. I use it on lecture and the highest quality because the women often have a habit of speaking softly in meetings so it can be difficult to capture their voices. The size of the rooms for our meetings vary, but most of them seat around 15-25 people along long tables and some seating on the sides.

I like the option to make podcasts. I agree with the criticism about the speaker on the back, however most of the time I am using ear phones to listen to the recording as I type minutes so this is not such a big issue and the speakers don't give you the best sound for listening anyway. Plus if you record anything in stereo you don't want to use the built in speaker.

The included DDS Player 7 software is supposed to be compatible with IBM Via Voice and Dragon Naturally Speaking, neither of which I have tried yet. My only gripe so far is that you have to pay $10 extra to upgrade to DSS Player Plus 7 to access some additional features such as file splitting and binding and seamless connection to Via Voice 10 and Dragon 8.

Overall I am satisfied with the quality of the recording and features, but a star off for making customers pay an extra $10 just to access a few extra features.

"Wow - was that fast!"
Ordered on a Thursday afternoon - received Friday afternoon - standard shipping! Excellent! Great product - exactly what I needed.

"Outstanding Voice Recorder"
I've only had mine for 2 days now and it's so easy to use I feel like a pro at it. You simply plug in the included USB cable, go to My Computer, and copy and paste your audio files onto your hard drive. It's as simple as that! I use Windows XP and did not need to install any drivers or the included software to do this. I haven't even opened the included CD yet and everything is working great. I was also able to copy mp3 music files from my hard drive to the recorder with no problem, and the sound is actually not bad!

The audio quality and mic sensitivity are excellent. You can adjust the contrast and the playback volume which can actually get somewhat loud considering how small the speaker is (the speaker is on the back).

It uses .wma file format which will not work with Audacity freeware, but I found a freeware called WinFF that batch-converts .wma's to .mp3's and it works great. Be sure to download the online .pdf manual as it is far more detailed and informative than the included paper manual.

My unit came with earpiece-style headphones and 2 generic brand AAA alkaline batteries that are really lasting! I have about 6-8 hours of overall use into it and the 3-notch battery meter still shows completely full. The included USB cable is 5 feet long and is the exact same style plug used by digital cameras. The unit has a metal chassis that feels cool to the touch when left in an air-conditioned room. The upper left-hand corner has a red-green dual color LED light which can be completely disabled in the menu settings. It lights up red while recording, green while playing back, and will blink red 3 times fast if you do something wrong.

By disabling the LED light and the voice guide (the unit talks to you in a British female voice) via the menu settings, you can make the unit completely inconspicuous so that you can secretly record someone with it in your pants pocket. It's about the same size and thickness of a Nokia cell phone, except that it's narrower, so it's quite small and fits your pocket easily. After you press the record button, you can then slide the power switch (on the lower right surface) to HOLD, which will lock the unit so that your record won't accidentally be stopped while it rustles around in your pocket. This rustling however can cause a very loud noise to be recorded, so you have to sit still!

The plastic stereo mic is detachable and then there's another permanent mic on the top right surface of the recorder. Both the stereo mic and the permanent mic seem to be equally as clear and sensitive. I haven't been able to notice any difference in the sound, and because the stereo mics are so close to each other, there really doesn't seem to be any right versus left audio difference. But the stereo mic looks kinda cool though.

PROS: Ease of use, battery life, audio quality, compact size, record time, I could go on and on.

CONS: High $$$ price tag, .wma file format. The display uses a small thin font that is hard to see. The contrast doesn't seem very crisp, no matter how you adjust it (Don't be fooled by the photos. That is just the product display sticker that you peel off). The backlight is rather dim and should be twice as bright. Most cell phones nowadays have nice bright backlights with clear, crisply-contrasted displays, but this recorder lacks in those areas. A longer (or even adjustable) backlight timeout would be nice. My unit arrived with a noticeable dent on the front bottom where it has "DIGITAL VOICE RECORDER DS-40" printed on it. The detachable stereo mic feels flimsy and cheaply made. The 1/8-inch stereo plug that sticks out of it wobbles, and even when the stereo mic is attached (plugged in), it still wobbles a bit. I once got my unit stuck in slow playback mode by accident somehow (which makes people sound very slow and drunk), and it was very difficult to figure out how to get it OUT of this mode and back to normal!

"Not What I expected"
I purchased an Olympus DS-40 from Fry's Electronics for $160.00. I got a box that contained the digital voice recorder, the software, a usb port cable, headphones, and an AC Adapter. I returned it thinking that I was going to get a better deal on Amazon.com. What I got was a digital recorder, the software, and two AAA batteries for $114.00. As far as I'm concerned I did NOT get a better deal. In thought I was going to get the same thing that I returned, but I learned that you get what you pay for. I DON'T EVEN HAVE A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL TO TALK TO SOMEONE. I look on Amazon.com to contact them by phone and all I get is a list of items that I can buy for customer service training. I will be returning this product to the fact it is not the complete product that I was paying for.

What our customer's say!

"recording quality note", The manual does not specify the most important quality difference between recording in STXQ mode versus STHQ.

STXQ results in 128kbps WMA recording.
STHQ results in 64kbps WMA recording.
Both modes are 44.1KHz 16 bit.

The conclusion is that if you are recording music or otherwise want the highest quality, you must record in STXQ mode.

This is a fantastic recorder. But it is not the ultimate recorder for musicians. For example, see the Zoom H4 or the Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder.

If you have a Mac or otherwise want to convert the WMA files to the more universally playable MP3 format, consider downloading the EasyWMA program (or one of many other similar free or inexpensive programs). This recorder is compatible with Mac computers if you are willing to convert WMA files after transferring them to your Mac (setting USB class in the DS-40 menu to "Storage Class" allows drag-and-drop from the DS-40 to your PC). The manual does not make this compatibility clear, and might mislead you to think it is only compatible with Windows.

See also the Olympus DS-61 (2GB) and DS-50 (1GB) for basically identical recorders at different price points. The DS-40 is a great bargain for those with more limited budgets or who do not need as much recording capacity. The DS-61 is not yet available on amazon, but is available elsewhere.

"Easy to use and good sound quality", If you want an easy-to-use and reliable digital recorder, this one's for you. It took me 5 minutes to learn how to use it. The sound quality is excellent when recording multiple voices in a room. Over the phone, the sound was not as clear but perhaps I could have used a different setting. The disk space is generous, and you can organize recordings into separate file folders.

"Very useful recorder!", Outstanding sound quality in stereo. The mono is OK too, but at its lowest quality levels, it produces an annoying metallic echo. I really like the DSS Software Player Plus program (I had to pay $10 to upgrade). It is easy to use. I can split and join files, easily control noise reduction, rename file folders (even templates that appear in the device), and control the recorder's menu. The menu feature is especially great because in the device, the menu display is somewhat cramped---given that there are a ton of options available in the menu. Also, I use Windows Media Player to play files and burn to CD's. I use a hard glasses case to store the recorder in, as it appears delicate. Some are saying it is made of metal---it seems too lightweight to be metal, maybe aluminum??

The timer feature is oustanding. It has settings for daily, weekly and you can set the record quality. And, there are 3 separate timers!

So far, I've recorded a few hours and the battery meter is still on full power with the generic batteries out of the box.

Without the software, the computer recognizes the recorder as "remote storage" and you can easily drag and drop files to other programs, or load them onto free WMA editor software available online.

The audio files are not as easy to e-mail as I thought. A 20 min recording in high quality stereo is about 8 MB, and when I try and attach it to an e-mail, it takes maybe 20 min to load it on there. But I was able to do it.

I looked long and hard for voice recorders before buying this one. And I am well pleased at the quality and sound control features, as well as file management.

"Works Great!",
Works excellent, both sides of conversation are clear using the peripheral TP-7 mic cable. The DS-40 is worth the extra expense for the ability to connect the USB seamlessly to drag and drop the 'non-proprietary file format' WMA files to a PC.

"Not Disappointed At All", I got this digital recorder due to new regulations in my business that require certain phone calls to be recorded. After using this for several days now it has worked flawlessly. I also purchased the TP7 accessory that you simply plug into the DS-40 mic input and put the earbud into your ear while you talk on the phone. The DS-40 does a great job of recording these calls. I'll also find many more uses such as recording lectures and using it as a daily log for ideas. I don't know how many times I've been driving down the road or somewhere where I've thought of an idea that I want to remember and I haven't had a way to capture it. Now, with the size and quality of the DS-40, I'll just take it with me and when I have a thought like that I'll record it to reference later. I also am a semi-professional songwriter and musician so it'll come in quite handy for capture song ideas on the fly as well. The bottom line is this is a great little recorder that seems to do its job very well. There are only a couple things that I think could be improved. 1) The backlighting seems kind of dim and there is no way to increase it. The settings are either "on" or "off." I suppose this is to conserve power but it seems like this could have been better. 2) I would like to be able to re-name the folders and files to my preference. The folders are lettered A-E (for recording). There is a list of pre-sets that you can choose from to rename the file but you don't have the ability to define a name yourself. The names available could be useful but may not be exactly what you want. The files can't be renamed so if you want to change a file name to identify it by its content, you won't be able to do that. In fairness you can attach comments to a file after you load it into your computer and you could use those comments to help identify its content. Overall, I'm very happy with the DS-40 and would recommend it. It's sound is crystal clear and for the price (especially here at Amazon) you really can't go wrong.

"A novice got excellent results", I wanted a something I could use to make recordings of our 45 minute Sunday school class to send to one of our class members serving in Iraq. Our classroom is the size of a regular conference room but with terrible acoustics. The last time I used a voice recorder was back when cassette tapes were popular, so I'm a total novice.

Here's what I found: a
1) Learning curve: 1 hour to read the whole manual, configure the device, and make some tests
2) Effort to record: easy (turn on, press the record button, press the stop button when done, turn off)
3) Download & conversion to mp3: 10 seconds for me, 2 or 3 minutes for the computer.
4) Sound quality: excellent - very clear with very little background noise.
5) Overall experience (usability, etc): excellent. The manual and interface were both easy to read and use.

"Great all in one recorder", This recorder is great for those who need to take voice notes and also want to record music at a decent quality. My only complaint is that there are only three microphone sensitivity levels, which is the only thing that makes this thing not all that ideal for music.

"Does Everything We Need", The Planning Office needed a reliable, quality unit to tape public meetings and hearings. The DS-40 replaced one that recorded well, but had tiny, multi-function, hard-to-operate buttons. The DS-40 has been a terrific unit. It records well, whether it is a small group meeting or a larger public hearing. Its operation is intuitive, which is a blessing when we're using temporary employees. It arrived at 4 p.m. in the afternoon, and it operated flawlessly for recording a meeting at 6:30 p.m. that same evening. For doing minutes, download the file and listen from the computer as it is easier to do the forward and reverse. I would recommend this unit to anyone who has to record meetings.

"Easy to get great recordings at my church", I bought DS-40 to record the sunday sermons on my church. It's a small church, so I figured a digital voice recorder will be enough and let me tell you that it is enough. Pastor wears the Olympus ME-15 Microphone (purchased separately) around his chest, then delievers the message as usual through another microphone which is connected directly to an amp.

After the service I get the recorder from the pastor, then copy the file to my computer, use Switch(ver 1.33) to convert the wma sermon file to mp3, and edit the file using Audacity to trim away any unwanted noise/beginning/end, adjust the volume. After that, my wife records the reading of the passages on the bible and the title of the sermon and I combine the two files and it's ready!

Recorded voice quality is very good!

"Olympus DS-40", Benefit to me: great productivity booster.

Salient features that deliver this benefit:

- Excellent microphone sensitivity makes it great for recording conferences and lectures. No more constant replaying, straining to hear what the speaker said.

- User-defined repeat playback loops and index ("go to")points speed transcription.

- Records about seven hours at high quality. Claims 5X that recording length on lowest quality but I've never tried it.

- Tiny drawback, not particularly important: the "record" button is high on the right side of the device. That's just where my thumb would be whether I want to record or not. Result: accidental recording. I'd like to see the double-button record feature used on Olympus microcasette recorders.

- This DVR replaced an Olympus microcassette recorder. Storing the analog contents of the recorder on my computer required replay through digitizing software (Audacity). With a DVR, just download.

Definitely recommend.
