"Painter isn't quite "there" yet." I was very disappointed in Painter X. After struggling with how slow Painter IX was, Corel boasted that this new release was the "fastest Painter ever!" It may be a tiny bit faster, but it's not noticeable! It still lags a LOT if you're using higher resolution images. Be prepared to work in 800 X 600 at 72 dpi if you want speed from the advanced brushes. I'm using a VERY fast system which is running very large Photoshop files at lightning speed. I find myself constantly struggling to keep my brush sizes low in Painter, just to avoid major lagtime.
Another problem I have with Painter is the interface. It is too clumsy to scale and rotate images when you can't see what you're resizing! I know, right? Not from $400+ software?! Yep.
Also, right out of the box, most brushes look pretty bad. I'm able to take some time and make custom brushes that look better, but most new users will have a hard time with this. WHY NOT MAKE BETTER PRESETS, COREL!?! Also, the textured paper looks like a cheap embossing effect, unless you really work with the lighting, etc.
So, the ability for Corel to perform is there, but it's slow, has a terrible interface, and takes a good bit of work to get the tools looking good. I keep hoping for them to address these issues, but they focus on making the paint effects look better. I would DEFINITELY have preferred ease-of-use to "real brisles" (a feature that you can't really use on bigger brushes without to major lagging)! It's too bad, because I LOVE what it CAN do, and how it looks, but getting there can be a real trial, especially compared to Photoshop.
So, I guess I'll just wait for Adobe to buy them, and take care of some of these issues.
"Working with it " I was a lucky Person and went to California to Fay Sirkis class for Corel Painter X . I am now trying to get better at using it. Oh yes very Happy.
"Too Many Bugs for a Stable Release" I am a Painter fan, but I think one should review the product with some honesty.
Painter's Brush engine is rather unmatched in terms of digital painting and graphics. This is one feature that overrides many of the other industry standard programs when it comes to illustrating and painting with digital applications. Painter's brush tracking also helps when one uses a tablet making it a very powerful application. The multitude of brushes that act like their traditional counterparts is one of the reasons a person could experiment without the fear of running out of paint, wasting paper, or supplies.
New Enhanced Brush Ghosting makes it a lot more easier to see the bearing and direction of your brush, especially making effects and strokes. Divine proportions help you with composition. I even like the fact that scripts even allow you to playback your drawing progress, similar to PortalGraphics Open Canvas. You can even create movies and animations. With the combination of Photoshop this is indeed a powerful program.
However, and granted I don't expect every program to be perfect upon release, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) has some major bugs. Scrollbars will disappear, going into the Brush creator will undock your palettes or mess with settings you previously had. Workspaces weren't able to save. Your brush would disappear at times too.
Now there is a current patch for this software at Corel's site, but if you were new to the program and saw such bad interface errors, wouldn't you be upset, given the cost of the software?
I can't honestly give this product 5 stars since you're met with such errors right out of the box.
"Get it, but less expensively. ;-)" This is a great product and I have no complaints with it. However, just FYI I found it for under $40.00 on buy-it-now Ebay. The registration number was included, but there was no handbook. However, you don't need the handbook, because all the same info is on the DVD.
"Missing Jeremy Sutton Tutorials" This is not so much a review of Painter X as it is of Corel's inability to deliver what it promises in its advertising.
What I am referring to are the Jeremy Sutton video tutorials that are promised as part of the Painter X package. These are clearly mentioned on Amazon's Painter X page as seen as Reason 10 under 'Top 10 Reasons to Buy Corel Painter X'.
In addition, page five (5) of the Painter X manual clearly states that '... Painter X includes a new collection of step-by-step training videos by Corel Master Painter Jeremy Sutton.' My Painter X DVD does not include these tutorials, nor does it include a link to any video tutorials.
I have been working with Amazon in an attempt to get this straightened out. My problem should not be construed as any criticism of the program itself, but only on non-delivery of items promised by Corel. This is my first purchase of any vesion of Painter. Hopefully this will be resolved in the near future.
9/24/07 Update Today my issue with the Jeremy Sutton videos was resolved.
The problem was that something went wrong with the registration of my copy. This is an automated process other than the user having to enter the correct serial number. I did all of that correctly, but was never given the Corel link to these very good, downloadable videos. Today, a Corel Tech corrected this and my issue has been resolved.
I am extremely pleased with my purchase and the support that I have received from Corel, especially that of Mr. John Derry of Corel, who pin-pointed my problem via email.

What our customer's say!
"Great software, digital painting at its best.", I'm a Photoshop user but had read so many great reviews and tried the trial version of PainterIX and just had to buy this. I'm very happy with it. For me it was a very quick learning curve from PS to Painter. Painter is much more "painterly" than PS and the brushes and paints really do react very much like the real deal. Coming from studio painting using acrylics for my underpainting and oils on top I found that Corels' oil pastels actually gave me a very similar look and feel once I learned how to tweak the brushes to my liking. In my opinion the most important things to learn to really get what you want from Painter are learning how to adjust the brushes to your liking, learning to use "papers" as textures instead of the brushes as textures (that's how PS works), and getting used to the color wheel. But I found the color wheel indispensable once I got used to it. I actually found myself wishing I had the color wheel in PS when working in it. Oh yeah, and if you don't have a tablet yet, I suggest the wacom intuos3 6x11. IN FACT, you may want to check on Corel's website. They almost always have a bundle deal where you can buy Painter and get a Wacom tablet at a discounted price instead of buying them separately (sorry Amazon...maybe Amazon has a bundle price too though...?). I can't even imagine trying to use this software with a mouse. Spend the extra little bit to get the cd version of the software. It comes with a great book that covers a lot of Painters features, including their new "real bristle" technology, as well as some goodies on the cd.
Overall if you're looking for a more "painterly" end product I think Painter is the way to go. You may also want to look on [...] for some great dvd tutorials on using Painter. I bought Ryan Church's and Puddnheads tutorial dvd's and although their styles and workflows are very different I learned a great deal by watching and working along with the dvd's and I'm sure I saved myself a great deal of time rather than just trial and error.
"AWESOME SOFTWARE CAN DO ANY ART MEDIA -- AND THERE'S NO PAINT MESS TO CLEAN UP!", This incredible software can do digitally any art media. Immense variety of brushes and tools from pastels to inks and all kinds of textured canvases make any former hands on art media methods a thing of the past.
I have always liked to draw and paint, when I installed Painter X I started dabbling and tinkering, not knowing anything at all and was able -- after about 35 minutes -- to replicate a favorite Maynard Dixon western painting. You can see it in the image gallery.
The huge options and abilities of Painter X are covered nicely in the product description.
I am especially interested in creating animation cells using sequential photos that I have enhanced with detailed art and then putting them into iMovie of Final Cut Express on my Mac laptop.
So far, the painting and airbrushing and pen & ink enhancements are dazzling using Painter X. I have barely tapped into the power and potential of this software and am looking forward to expanding this review and posting additional paintings in the image gallery.
Currently I am using a Wacom tablet with about a 4x5 drawing area. I plan to get a larger tablet or a laptop monitior on which I can draw directly.
I am not aware of any software for the price that comes close to what can be done with Painter X.
Highest recommendation.
"No Support for Education Version", I guess if you can get Painter X to work when installed it is a good product. If you can't (Vista, 8 Gig memory, 2T disk, Cintiq21), you have to pay for support by the call (for education version which is same base program w/o some of the bells and whistles). I kept trying and got it installed and working but pallettes would not move out of center of screen or dock anywhere but the center. Any attempt to change brush size/characteristics abended program. I am glad I was EDUCATED about Corel before buying the full price version.
"Very cool", I must admit I do love PS better, but once you learn the program it is really great! The different tools available are excellent.
"WOW!!", This product is the best graphic program ever. It works great in my operating system VISTA. The only limitations of Corel Painter X is the artists creativity.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"fantastic brushes", Pros:Tons of brushes to use, like a real painter where you have to dip it in the palette or you can adjust the well to refill your brushes automatically.
Capture pattern feature is great! Help! Web page links are good and it's easy to find information. Registering your copy gives you access to some neat little tutorials The palette: mix your own colors like a real palette No water or turpentine required, you can noodle around on this program rather than get out the whole kit and caboodle, the photo it, then scan it, then post to a webpage.
Cons: I tend to crash this program every time I use it by having giant canvases and making the brushes really wide. Ordering more computer guts for better performance (my pc had been redone with a new video card 3 mo. prior ect for gaming, so this proggie does take a lot).
The auto paint program is cool for about an hour. Photoshop has better filters and ad ons [eyecandy & alienware]if all you want to do is retouch photos or don't want the extra fancy brushes.
Won't beat ye olde sketchpad and ink for portability, tactile value or having an excuse to go to the art store. Instead of "You spent $10 dollars on ONE sheet of paper!" it will be "You bought a $300 art program AND you STILL need to go to the art store?!"
"Gritty, Dirty, Clumpy, Smudgy, and Fantastic!", In the past 2D computer art was too perfect. It lacked the hand of the artist, the interesting look only natural media could lend. While not perfect Painter gets as close as you can get without actually having to clean brushes. Colors can be mixed that have variations in tone and color. Paints can mix and smear with underlying color. An airbrush can spit and splatter or be perfectly smooth. Watercolors blend and soak into the paper.
Where Painter really shines is with the use of a graphics tablet like Wacom Wacom Intuos3 6X8 Pen Tablet. You can almost smell the turpentine.
"A bigger and better Painting Software", Corel Painter IX had me eager to paint. Author's: Note I wasn't interested in painting until I used Corel Painter IX. I was pretty much not interested in painting until I saw a promotional offer for Painter IX and an animation software that complemented Painter IX. Now that Painter X had arrived. I downloaded a trial version to see if what is being offered could improve on the already wonderful Painter IX. The feature that caught my eye was Realbristle brushes. They seemed promising. I fooled around with Painter X for a few days following some online tutorials and I got lovely results.
I had been using Painter IX recently and I have been painting for at least a short while so I won't lie and say that it creates the work for you. Online tutorials or being an experienced painter can really help you achieve good results. I mainly use vector software or draw so my painting isn't the best of the best but I'm motivated to learn because of the software's lovely capabilities.
I recommend buying it even if you aren't a professional there are plenty of online tutorials and some community colleges offer non-credit courses in design software usage.
"Corel Painter X a family favorite", I purchased Corel painter IX 2+ years ago. I have upgraded to 9.5 and am delighted with the product. It is a genuine pleasure to be able to paint while at my computer . Cartoons ,animation (via Toon Boom software),and digital photography enhancement are all possible with this software. Yes, Corel X I bought it for my daughter and she loves it. (she lives in Buffalo now. Thank God used to live in Wisconsin YOU CANT GET THERE FROM HERE . Corel X is supported better than IX has more brush and other media types it is just like real painting no matter which media you prefer. Oh yes Wacom tablet is reccomended as are one or two books for sale via Corel .Start with a small tablet they get expensive and some people dont like the large ones Vista is supported by X Cant wait to upgrde one more wedding to go Good Luck and ENjoy
