"Great program", It's an industry standard for the entertainment industry. I've used 3dsMax since version one. Most of the studios in our company use it exclusively(a few of our studios use Maya). It's an incredibly powerful tool for modeling, rendering, and animation.

Depending on what you're using it for you may or may not need to purchase plugins. I currently don't use any plugins. There are also thousands of free plugins available on the internet.

After 12 years of using Max I have a hard time imagining using anything else.

So long ago, I bought this mighty thing called 3ds MAX R6, and that begin what had been a waking Nightmare for me. Therefore, now I am telling you about a TRAP I wish none would never fall for again, because I did.

What they told me (praises).

They say that 3ds max 6 is like a god, it does all your animation work for you. That it was not just a work suite, but also a operating system of pure power, consumed all your system resources and churns it into games, animations, and all forms of pleasing beauty you can imagine. (All of the above is true.)

What they did not tell me (complaints).

1) It is a licensing headache. The thing had a license. Also, it run will not run without plugins. Most plugins are included, and some will run using native DCPFLICS servers, but Third-party plugins may require licenses. Licenses required protection servers. Servers need to all the time...

1a) This software is licensed to both you and your computer. If you upgrade your computer significantly, you risk losing you license (unless it is somewhere else). Alternatively, if you transfer your license it can get lost or it may transfers to a computer that does not exist. Either way you can loose your license. Overall, it is a hurdle.

2) Did you know about C-Dilla? Unfortunately, this package put C-Dilla on your computer. Windows cleaned my C-Dilla out one day. Now nothing works. Moreover, I do not really want it to work anyway.

What I know now (more complaints).

The total cost of plugins are enormous, and it will far exceed any spending on the host software. If you have datelines, you may buy many plugins to shorten development time. Unfortunately, any changes to your software environment may cause plugins to fail. If you upgrade your aging host software, you will likely re-authorize all your plugins (!).
This made me very angry. It also made me angry.

Last and most important...please only buy form authorized RESELLERS. No offense to anyone, however it does save a lot of embarrassment.
