What our customer's say!
"A "Must Have" item for third world environments like Alabama", I live in Birmingham, Alabama, and we have more power failures than you'd see in third-world nations. Sometimes several times a day, we lose power for long enough to interrupt communications equipment. So the APC BE550R 550VA Back-UPS ES 8-Outlet Battery Backup System is a reasonably priced solution to a really annoying problem.
It's not powerful enough to keep things running for long, but as a power condtioner, or as an effective measure to prevent shut downs due to momentary losses of power, it's proven to be well worth the price.
If I have any complaint, it's the annoying alarm tone that sounds every few seconds as long as the power is off. There should be a way to silence that thing!!
"Why didn't I get this a long time ago!", Power outages in our neighborhood are a fact of life--it almost always goes out during big storms and sporadically goes out for no apparent reason--sometimes for just a split second--just long enough to make everything with a digital clock go to blinking twelves. I work from home, so I have had numerous instances where I have lost work when the power drops. Its a sinking feeling when everything goes dead quiet and dark. I tried to remember to save my files more often, but "Murphy" has gotten me way too often. I kept telling myself I'd get one of these, but for some reason put it off for years until now. Its already made me glad I got it. The power went out last week for the first time since I set it up and it worked like a charm. I even let it go through an automatic shutdown just to see how it handled it. No problems! I like the built-in surge suppression too, since when the power comes back on it often surges. (I had a controller chip on a hard drive melt one time from such a surge, even though it was on a surge protector.) This thing even cuts in momentarily when there is a minor deviation in the voltage. OK, let it storm, let the cars skid into power poles, let the vacuum cleaner or the dog yank the cord from the wall, I'm ready.
"Fast Delivery / Very Good Price", The confirmation for my purchase was fast , a second communication included FedEx tracking number and the purchase price was very fair !! This vendor is a "KEEPER" - keep him in mind for future purchases/shopping
"It works", Our house has an auto-start standby generator that kicks on about 20 seconds after a power failure is detected. So I just needed something as a bridge for this brief interval, and also to prevent a PC crash during a power flicker (more frequent). The APC 550 seemed like it would do this, and the price was right.
We've had no outages since the product was connected. But we've had some flickers, including several during Tropical Storm Hanna which passed over us. The APC worked just as advertised. And all the surge-protected outlets it provides have helped me clean up some of the "rat's nest" behind my computer (half of these are supported by the battery; half are not). Overall, an impressive and decently priced product.
"APC UPS 550 Unreliable", I own 5 of these BE550 units and every one of them has failed at one time or another. APC has replaced 3 of them at no cost (to their credit), but to no avail. They will work fine for 6 months or so and then, without warning and for no apparent reason, they begin beeping, indicating that there is no power supply, when in fact the electrical supply is fine. I believe these units have an inherent flaw in them and I will not buy another APC product. I need a reliable product - not a piece of garbage that won't last and fails without warning.

"Ok, best option, but ...", I have two APC units and one CyberPower unit - all the 6 outlet / half with battery power, protecting my computer and phone, and primarily the projection TV (so in case of a power outage I have time to turn off the projection lamp and let the fan cool it down).
I apparently have fluctuating power as well as brown- and black-outs, and after a couple of years the units started clicking (loudly) over to battery, sounding the alarm, then clicking back. Every 10 minutes or so. APC website said "this is normal operation". I replaced the batteries - unlike other posters I was able to order from two different battery sources, both of whom delivered quickly, BUT that didn't solve the problem. And at $25-$30 each, ouch.
However, the function this unit provides is necessary, so I'm going to replace two of the dead units (and live with surge protectors for the other devices).
And I fully expect to be replacing these units in another couple of years. If a new solution comes out, I will be first in line to try it.
"better than a power strip ", why pay 20 $ FOR A power strip when you can get a UPS for 50. i have been buying APC battery backups for over 15 years , and they have never let me down, i use this in the bedroom i have TIVO , 32inch LCD and a DVD player connected to this and it works great, oh almost forgot and the alarm clock
"as promised", Not much one can say. I plugged it in, plugged in all my computer stuff. Turned it on and everything is working.
"Money Well Spent", Every workstation is equipped with an APC UPS Battery Backup. It alleviates the problems of data & time loss when the power goes down, which makes it money well spent.
"Suboptimal Service on Battery Replacement-and Remedy", I've used APC battery backup units for years at home and in my offices. They, and competitors' backups are generally good while the battery lasts, but then comes the problem you will face. Expensive Dead Battery. After only about 1.5-2 years, the battery has died in my unit, and this is a "normal lifespan". I decided not to buy a complete new whole unit, and called to find out where to buy a replacement battery, as APC advertises.
The replacement battery, is advertised for a special low price of $29.95 plus shipping, on their website, however when I asked to buy it today, they said it was not available for over a month away!! That's NOT useful at all, if you need a new battery NOW! The person helping me quickly offered instead to sell me a more expensive new unit, for a lot more than a battery, and I said "No dice".
She then told me I could easily get a replacement battery locally at Staples, and other Office Max/Lowes type places that sell their backup units. A call to them got no batteries, these stores never carried them. One said "No local retailers carry those big lead acid batteries, its just not practical, get 'em from APC".
The APC rep could not find the name of the president of APC to contact, and could not get me a supervisor. I spent over 40" with 3 different service people, each offering an expensive upgrade, not the battery! My time was being wasted, and I smelled a Rat the size of an automobile battery!
All I got, after an hour on the phone was a lot of "I'm sorrys" a tacky "bait and switch" to get a more expensive whole unit, instead of the replacement battery (RBC47) i needed.
This is the ugly underside of the battery backup business. They claim easy replacement of the battery that barely lasts 2 years, yet somehow it's not available for months to you, when you need a replacement!
What are you going to do when your battery dies in 1-2 years? PLAN FOR IT- TODAY. Go with a competing company that offers replacement batteries and promptly sends them, or wait for over a month for a battery replacement from APC, that may never arrive? They know to the day when the next battery will arrive, yet don't plan to have enough of a supply to last till then.
You can wait over a month for battery backup with APC. Is this reasonable to you?
APC, you have lost my business on your nonexistant support for your batteries.
Bait and switch is not appreciated.
***Addendum*** I later pushed, and pushed, and finally got a person at APC to send me a new unit and battery in exchange for my old one, as I couldn't be without a battery for it a month. The new one is working. Local Office Depot and Lowe's do not carry batteries for these devices, as the reps would have you believe. Companies should be responsive, the first time, to help established customers stay happy customers. We'll see what happens in a year or two, when this battery goes...
