"Much improved over previous WinDVD Versions!"
As you can see, most of the bad reviews listed below are from Windows Vista users. It's a bit unfair of them negging this item, since they were the ones gullible enough to go and buy Vista, which is the source of many software incompatibility problems. Stick with Windows XP! But that's another story.

I've been using many previous versions of WinDVD, all the way back as far as version 4, and I'm very pleased with WinDVD 8. The old VGUI was a bit clumsy and inconvenient to use- this new one is much more streamlined, and runs faster as well. It supports the new H264 codecs as well, so that's handy if you're running the latest HD-DVD/Blu-Ray software. I'm very impressed with the new look- functionality is the same as previous versions of WinDVD, and it works great on XP Pro. Haven't had any crashes yet, installation was fine.

"Great Software"
Yes the product key or what I thought was the key didn't work but after less than 5 minutes on the phone I got an ENGLISH! speaking person that fixed the problem right there. Plays DVD's beautiful. No problems with software on Win XP Media Center. Other reviewers who complained probably had old hardware.Gave it only 4 stars for the product key issue.

"Serial number did not work"
The serial number for registering the product did not work and there was no assistance from the vendor. Did I get a counterfeit product? Were they sloppy in printing the serial number or verifying the number via the software? I'll never know because I returned the product for a refund.

"worthy to take a look"
Pro: Good-looking interface with lots of features

Cons: Installation overloaded with 3rd party softwares

"Cool DVD software"
I bought WinDVD8 from a store and there's also the same issue to me. But I found there's a patch released on corel website to fix the problems: corel website > support > knowledge base on left side > choose WinDVD and search > 761907 Vista Support Patch

After I install the patch from FAQ page, (though it's not easy to find) WinDVD8 works fine on my Vista machine. Its playback quality is really good as well as audio quality though nothing new to audio technology. What I like most is its timestrech function when playing foreign movies so that I can learn Japanese or French better in a slower tempo. Its cinema enhancement also makes movie more "movie-like". After all, it paid off.

What our customer's say!

"Defective software", The WinDVD 8 software came with a serial installation number that could not be used because one of the characters (a circle with a slash mark across it) is not on the keyboard. I sent an e-mail to WinDVD 8 and they never answered
me. Amazon refunded me for the full purchase price. Amazon deserves an A+!

"Don't buy anything from Corel", I own WinDVD 6 Platinum. I bought it directly from Intervideo, before they were bought by Corel. I paid for the disc. Spent over $ 100. Worked just fine. My computer crashed, I reinstalled the program and I need a new activation key. I have spent one month trying to extract the key from Corel. No help. No tech support. Their e-mail address does not work. They want me to buy a new product. But I won't.

"Won't work on Vista PC", I tried to install the download version on a fairly high end Vista PC. WINDVD 8 installed okay, but I could not get it to "activate" with the SN/key provided by Intervideo. The key was accepted when I first launch the program, but it keeps returning to the same activation screen over and over again. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.

I had no such problem installing (and activating) PowerDVD Ultra, a competing DVD Player Windows Vista compatible PC application sold by Cyberlink.

The user interface on WINDVD 8 Platinum appears better than PowerDVD, but Intervideo's support for HD DVD and BluRay DVDs is available only via an alternate version (Intervideo website downloadable only). HD DVD and BluRay support comes standard in Cyberlink's PowerDVD Ultra, but at 30 dollars higher price. You have to read the "fine print" to be made aware of this and finding this so-called "alternate" version on their website is obscured to say the least; almost like Intervideo does not really want to sell it, least not in the boxed (retail) version.

I think the other reviewers are right on with all the bad reviews of this product and certainly with respect to Vista installations.

"BE WARNED....", I wished I had known a couple of things prior to October 17th 2007:
1) I wished I had known that WinDVD 8 ain't no WinDVD 7.
2) I wished had known that buying WinDVD 8 would be a waste of forty-something bucks, a waste of endless hours with Corel's tech support, and a waste of time (try 20 days?) of following Corel's Tech support instructions, including hours of 'holding' for someone to pick up, uninstalling regedit's (?), downloading Microsoft patches and getting not one, but two useless new product keys.

But MOSTLY what I wished I had known was that WinDVD 7 was the best of the last and I should have paid better attention to where I stored the program disk.

Simply put, my computer had some issues and in getting them resolved, anything not already installed on the hardrive with purchase had to be re-installed. I couldn't find the WinDVD 7 program, so I went to my local store, found out they no longer had WinDVD 7, but WinDVD 8 'would work just fine!". HAH!!!

I've given up trying to get the program working and I don't even have Vista! I have XP. I figured the MOST I could do was warn people. Don't think WinDVD 8 is just a better WinDVD 7. It's not! And don't think Corel's tech support can help you -- they can't.

Lastly, if anybody has a working copy of WinDVD 7, put it away in a safe place. You might need one day and they ain't making no more....

"Can't Install", Hard to review this product when you cannot even get it to install. The CD key/serial number does not work. I've check the ulead forums about this problem and it seems to be one that gets little if any attention from the company. I think I'm above average when it comes to computers and have never come across this problem with software before. I hate to imagine the frustration it would cause a novice to get this software up and running. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

"Beware -- Dont Waste Your Money", Besides being terribly buggy, this programs is impossible to reinstall, as many of us are doing on new Windows Vista computers. Like many of its ilk, Corel (which brought us the infamous Ulead Video Mess), makes it nearly impossible to get a renewed "activation" code. I've searched all over their site, but obviously they want you to buy the product again (and again).

Instead, go for free dvd player software available on-line, or if you need basic editing software, go with a reputable seller. AVS for example has an inexpensive package of tools -- and a free player if thats all you need. And that really is all 98% of home users need.

Why waste your time and money ?

"no support no support no support", Geez, i can't believe that the online demo version of this stuff worked so well and the boxed store version would not even load. Don't waste your time trying to contact these buzzards either. After 45 minutes on hold I couldn't take it any longer. This stuff is a joke. There's got to be something better out there. My windows vista runs windows media player just fine. I don't even know why I bothered to spend hard earned cash on Intervideo. Save your money to buy a pizza, at least you'll be happy in the end.

"Crash and burn", This is the worst software DVD-player I've ever had the misfortune of using. It crashes randomly at the most inopportune moments. It's bloated, pushy, bug-ridden and some features just don't work.

How difficult can it be to produce a good software DVD-player if a cheap $50 Chinese hardware player works perfectly?

There's a hell somewhere specifically designed for incompetent programmers. I just know it.

"Horrible Service, Refund Problems!", InterVideo WinDVD Platinum 8 doesn't work very well with Windows Vista. It crashes, it freezes and ultimately causes plenty of problems. Within four days, I requested a refund and complied with their 14-day return policy. Here we are 90 days later, and despite several promises that a refund would arrive; nothing yet. I finally contacted the Better Business Bureau, because I am not going to let them retain my money.

InterVideo has several pages worth of complaints regarding software, tech support and refund issues. Simply put, despite the policy, they promise refunds but never actually follow through. Avoid InterVideo software and service at all costs.

UPDATE: After filing a BBB complaint, within 48 hours I got my refund on my Visa. Although still horrible service, and the product is bloatware, difficult to uninstall. I recommend just using Windows Media Center, if you have Vista Home Premium and above.

"Don't even think about it.", I have purchased WinDVD 8 to upgrade Win DVD 7: what a mistake!
I have made another mistake purchasing Win DVD Create 3 at the same time.
Win DVD 8 won't start at all whilst Win DVD Create 3 always locks up during encoding! Bear in mind that I have a very clean and proven PC configuration and that I have this kind of issues only with these two programs. I have tried for hour to solve the problems, uninstalling, cleaning the register and reinstalling these applications, the video drivers and so on but it was only a big waste of time. I have contacted Intervideo's customer support the very next day after the purchase, asking for a refund, but I have got only promises for two months. In the end I have wasted money and time. I am very disappointed and surely I will never purchase anything from this company anymore in the future.
