"Don't buy - Other Companines make better shredders"
What a piece of junk. First, there is a bar in the middle of the slot where you feed the paper in which blocks the opening even when attempting to put in one piece of paper. Second, for some reason whenever I go near the shredder with my Bluetooth headset for my cell phone the shredder just starts running. Third, there is a special slot for credit cards that only slices them instead of shredding it which would allow anyone to easily put it back together and read the information. And don't try to put it where the paper goes to shred it properly because it jams up. Finally, there is a small window on the shredder basket that supposed to let you know when it's full. Unfortunately the paper piles up in the back of the basket long before it's full and starts jamming the shredder. Sadly it took me a little more than 30 days to discover all of these problems so Circuit City won't give me a refund. All in all I've had much better performance out of paper shredders that cost a lot less.

"So much better than a competing units at same price level"
Having had two other makes at roughly the same price failing, the unit came as a pleasant surprise: More pages finely cross-shredded, automatic feed-in, and unlike other competitive products shreds credit cards, paper clips etc.

"This should be 4 stars . . ."
I was unable to edit the number of stars on Amazon. I originally gave this 1 star because it "died" after about 3 uses. However, the next morning it was working fine. It seems that shredders occasionally overheat a bit and shut themselves down. It actually works quite well when it's working. And it is very attractive as far as shredders go.

"Great crosscut shredder for the price."
I bought this shredder because I wanted a decent cross-cut shredder that I knew could easily shred any old CDs/DVDs that I didn't want anymore. I also have an older strip cut shredder that could barely strip cut a credit card so it was time for something new. Since this had a separate slot for shredding CDs I figured that meant it should do the trick as well as destroy any old documents or credit cards that I needed to get rid of.

Unpacking this from the box and setting it up was pretty easy. Just take the plastic wrap and foam off the bin and shredder then just put the shredder on top of the bin. I shredded a whole bin full of paper as well as about 20 old CD's that I didn't want around anymore. Looking around inside I noticed that the separate slot for the CD has 3 wheels inside of it so the CD isn't cross cut like a sheet of paper but instead cut into 3 pieces. Overall it also seems reasonably quiet for a cross cut shredder (which is still pretty loud) and did not overheat even after shredding about a bin and a half worth of paper.

Some people may complain that this shredder does not shred the 10 sheets of paper it says it can but the manual explicitly points out that it accepts up to 10 sheets of 20-lb bond paper. I have a lot of laser printer paper which is 24-lb bond paper and is a lot different than the 20-lb stuff. I usually fed in less than 10 sheets of this laser printer paper and it seemed to handle it just fine. I believe if you are ONLY shredding 20-lb bond paper it would be able to handle up the stated maximum of 10 sheets but most people will feed in 10 sheets of anything and expect it to work all the same.

THE GOOD
---------
1. The metal teeth seem like this is pretty good for cutting up most 'light-sized' things you could run through it.
2. Separate CD slot to cut up any old CDs or DVDs that you might have backing up old but confidential information.
3. Quiet overall compared to most of the other cross-cut shredders I tried in the stores while searching for a decent shredder.

THE BAD
-------
1. The manual says not to shred more than 5 CDs per day to avoid excessive wear on the cutters.
2. Recommends against shredding any staples, fasteners, or paper clips.
3. Shredding CDs makes a mess in the bin which is hard to clean out.

Overall this is an excellent mid/low range shredder. If you just have a home office or some light use this would be perfect for your price range. I would just remember to slap a bag in the lower bin if I plan on shredding any CDs in the future. As long as you stick to shredding the correct type of paper this shredder should perform at or beyond your expectations. Although if your looking for something that could shred through even paper clips and staples then you should probably check out some of the higher end business model shredders.

What our customer's say!

"Holding my breath, hoping for the best", I just bought this model so I'm holding my breath, hoping for the best.

This is my 4th shredder in about 10 years and I've never been real happy about any of them.

I gave this unit 4 stars out of the box because:
--It was cheap
--It worked
--Pull out basket
--It is quieter than my old shredder
--Unlike my old one this actually cut my cd's into 3 pieces rather than merely making a hundred indentions that was suppose to disable the CD (I never trusted that and ended up breaking them by hand)

I may be over generous but I don't have any reason yet to knock it down any more.

The reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are:
--It feels flimsy.
--It says it'll cut 10 pages but I tried 3 pages at one time and it sounded like it wouldn't handle much more.

"Piece of garbage...mine broke", I really liked this shredder when I first bought it from circuit city. It worked well and smoothly enough, and I had no problems shredding documents, CDs and credit cards (credit cards worked fine in the regular paper slot, so I didn't have that problem like one other reviewer). Also, it had a pretty slick design, and looked really good anywhere in the room.

The first problem was the internal design, where paper pulp would accumulate in the middle of the shred head due to a support bar on the inside. Cleaning this out would cause paper dust and flakes to go all over the place, which would then get vacuumed up (a minor inconvenience).

Then, at some point, the auto sensor went. It would get activated by the first sheet of paper, but then never turn off. Really annoying, but still workable.

Today, the thing just broke, under normal use. This only after ~6 months of mild to moderate use (household junk mail, credit card statements, etc.). The two rotating rods are held in place by plastic brackets! Now, it still shreds on one side, while the other lets paper through. Now the whole thing must get discarded!

My advice, forget aesthetics and buy a fellowes.

"Not worth it", Lasted through approximately five weeks of shredding my daily junk mail before the motor burned out. Granted I get a lot of junk mail, but I expected more from a name brand.

"rather good but not great", Royal makes one of the better cross cut paper shredders in this price category. I have used this paper shredder for about one year now and overall I have been satisfied.

It shreds lots of things rather well--many less expensive models simply cannot shred credit cards, CDs and DVDs. This one can. One reviewer says that a shredded CD makes a mess in the wastepaper can directly below the shredder; but I have not found this to be the case. This shredder by Royal can really do the job; although they do recommend that you limit the total number of credit cards, CDs and the like to no more than five per day. This is a minor disappointment; but again for the price it's still pretty good.

One thing that does disappoint me is how the shredder wastepaper basket seems to fill up rather quickly. I suppose that the shredded piece of paper leave room between them and air takes up the space between the shreds of paper. I guess that would be the case with any shredder. Oh, well. Sigh.

One more caution: if you plan on shredding the phone book in one sitting, forget it. This machine will overheat and automatically turn itself off when it senses that it's in danger of overheating. I recently got rid of several years' worth of tax returns and it took me two days to do it because I had to keep on giving the machine time to cool down before I could continue to shred more paper. Of course, I should have shredded many documents sooner than I did so I myself am partly to blame for that problem.

Overall, for routine everyday use this really is a fine shredder. You'll have to be patient with it when you have large amounts of things to shred; but again in this price category you won't get much better.

Three and one-half stars.

"Fair shredder for the money. ", We bought this shredder for a small office and were mostly pleased with its ability to shred. There is a support bar through the center of the blades that catches shredded paper and needs to be cleaned out every so often. Then one day, it would not shred. I took if apart and cleaned every iota of shredded paper out of the mechanism, but it still would not function. I tried to use the shredder about 2 weeks later and it worked. It seem that one must physically press the container in when setting the cutting mechanism on the top. If you don't manually press it in, the safety switch is not satisfied and it won't run. Emptying this unit is a bit difficult as the paper shreds respond to static electric and inevitably, a few end up on the carpet around the unit.
