"Horrible Interface ", This product is not the worst of the lot, but be warned that Convekta's philosophy seems to be to produce chess software for COMPUTER profesionals rather than software for CHESS professionals or amateurs.

"Great Variety!", I've been using this program for years now, and it never gets old. It has over 1200 puzzles ranging from simple two-move checkmates to problems so difficult I didn't understand the answer even after they gave it to me! (I'm an intermediate player, 1400 or so USCF rating). There is always a puzzle at your level, and there are always puzzles enough above your level that you can go back to them three months later and have to figure them out all over again.

"Excellent buy", This software got me to think further ahead and think outside the box. Given it does have a lot of problems. It doesn't have a lot of the same problems to practice at. It gives you a few problems so you may achieve the concept of what you are doing then you move to the next phase. I wouldn't recommend this to the blitz player at those 1 minute games where you take advantage of basic tactics. This software is more for those 2 hour plus games.

"Can't recommend this higher", I suppose there's really 2 main types of chess players. There's the type that plays a lot and never really cares to improve and then there's the type that is concerned with getting really good at the game.

This product is for that second type of player. I've seen guides on Amazon that talk of chess improvement with a list of like 30 items with one sentence lines that say something to the effect of "blah blah blah this is great". Here's a secret -- at some point all the stuff you read on chess becomes redundant or of little help.

As far as books are concerned you might want to consider reading one general chess book for starters and one book on strategy. And that's it. Your actual improvement comes from playing well thought out games and from solving chess puzzles. If you play just one game of chess a week, and study tactics every day then you'll make actual improvement and fast. That's hard work, and it might make your brain feel funny, but you get what you want. You get really good at chess.

This program is straight tactical puzzles, but it nevertheless teaches you strategic concepts. No strategy in chess will work if you don't keep in mind one and two move tactical shots at every step of the way. Most players won't catch your more subtle mistakes. This program will have you catching theirs, though. The puzzles are broken into themes, or motifs if you will, such as "weak squares" or "weak file" and before you know it you are noticing tactical scenarios when they are available in your games.

The puzzles are also broken down into difficulty level, so I suggest you start with difficulty 10 and work your way up from there. I've solved about 700 puzzles myself and i'm working toward difficulty 50. The hardest puzzles in here are difficulty 90+. When you make a mistake the program gives you hints such as pointing out critical files and diagonals as well as the most important pieces involved in the solution. If you get this product and work your way through every single problem you'll see massive, massive improvements in your game. I can speak from a personal level and say that I'm much better having solved the problems I have. Take your time, but make sure you stick with it.

Now that you know this product will do more for you in less time than all the chess books out there, you should seriously consider getting it. It's about half the price of Fritz and even comes with a built in chess engine(Crafty). There's no need to worry about openings, middlegames and endgames when you can decide a game of chess with one devestating combination. Get this is you're serious about improving in chess.

"Learn Tactics the easy way", Chess is 99% tactics, have you already heard this? Wanna study and improve your chess skills? It is a much better (and time-saving) approach to study using chess software then reading a book on tactics, although I would recommend both methods if you have enough time. Read Pachman's "Modern Chess Tactics" (buy it used!), Vukovic's "Art of Attack in Chess" (a classic) and Y. Averbach's "Chess Tactics for Advanced Players" (the best book ever on tactics) and practice with this software... and your tactics vision will improve _a_lot...
