"Greatest MP3 Player available"
When I was looking for an music player for my birthday, I looked right away at the iPod. My sister, four or five years ago, got the Apple Ipod 20GB 4th Generation and has been pleased with it (never replaced because she doesn't want to use it for videos). A friend of mine told me to look at the Zune 80 GB Digital Media Player Black (2nd Generation) that he has, but I tried using his and the navigation is a bit confusing after being used to the iPod's click wheel. They were about the same price on their sales, plus I also got a free $25 iTunes card at Best Buy.

I was also looking at the iPods Nano and Touch. The Apple iPod nano 8 GB Black (3rd Generation) has 1/10th of the capacity of the 80GB Classic, but was only $50 less, and I couldn't fit all of my music/videos on. The Apple iPod touch 16 GB with Software Upgrade, although it has a much larger screen and more interesting features (including wifi access) and has probably enough space (for now, anyways) , costs $150 more!

I never buy electronic equipment (except maybe accessories) from Amazon because of Best Buy's Geek Squad tech support-plus, if you have a problem, you don't have to go through the pain of trying to return it via Amazon. My iPod actually crashed 3 times after I bought it and I all I had to do to replace it each time was just take a 5 minute drive to the Best Buy, talk to the Geek Squad person who checked it out and deemed me worthy of an exchange. After the fourth crash, I just took it to the Apple store, where they told me it wasn't a problem with the iPod, rather with a corrupt file on it, which I couldn't have found out if I just returned it to Amazon. Since then, I deleted that file and it's been working great ever since.

The earbuds are a pain in the butt to use, but I just got some Sony MDR-Q68LW Clip-on Style Headphone with Retractable Cord. They eliminated the tangling of the ear bud cord. Also, they're more comfortable.

The back can get easily scratched, even from just taking it out of and putting it back into your pocket. This can be easily remedied by purchasing a silicone skin (if you buy a skin made for the 30/60GB fifth generation iPod, you can save a bunch of money, since they're the same size) or you can buy a case for a medium sized camera (like the Lowepro Ridge 10 (Arctic Blue))

"cool item but beware!"
this ipod is slick, but buyers should beware that this 6th gen locks out video to 3rd party assessories & will only work with "apple approved" players of which there are few right now. This means that most of the video docking players (like the sonic impact v55) out there won't work with this until you buy a $50 cable from apple. Pretty underhanded of apple to do this quietly don't you think...

"This Apple iPod is an Instant Classic "
Disclaimer - I base this review off of currently owing the Classic 80 gig, the mini 1 gig, the original iPod Nano 1 gig, Shuffle 1 gig and the original iPod 5 gig. And in the past I have owed the iPod 5th generation 30 gig, the iPod Photo 30 gig and an iPod Mini 4 gig that was lime green and got stolen.

I have owned the iPod classic 80 gig for about four months now and when I read other reviewer's thoughts about this model I was a little worried that it would not live up to expectations. But I made the purchase anyway and decided to make the best of it. The main reason that made the decision to purchase the Classic instead over the iPod Touch is that you get so much more memory for the money with the Classic. And I didn't feel that I much use for the applications that Apple had for the Touch, or the Iphone for that matter. And even with the addition of the Application section of the ITMS the Classic is still a better deal than any of the Touch models.

What makes the Classic worth buying? The screen is a lot clearer and cleaner to view than the previous iPod 5.5/5.0 generations of which I owned also. The metal front of the Classic is easier to keep clean and harder to damage than previous iPod generations have been. The touchpad on the Classic works really well, and is always sensitive to use. In fact, the game Phase that you can buy for the iPod Classic totally relies on the sensitivity of the Classic touchpad and it works great. Never stalls, reboots, slows down or crashes. If you read the first reviewer of the Classic he totally trashes this model iPod, although I have found out that this unit is very reliable and has plenty of space to fit all of your pics, podcasts, movies, games and of course music. The Coverflow use of the Classic software works very well even through many a reviewer it seem to believe that it doesn't load fast enough and is a little bulky for the processor to handle. True, depending on the number of albums that you have on the iPod Classic it takes a second for all of the graphics to load. Currently, I am using 10 gig of the 80 gig capacity and it doesn't bother me if the software needs a second or two to load all of the album pictures that Coverflow uses. Coverflow is really great and makes selecting your music very easy to use.

Also, I have read that other reviewers believe that the sound quality of the Classic was downgraded from the previous models but the must have some super sonic hearing because I can't tell the difference. The battery is also another amazing aspect of this unit because it has never ran out on me even during continuous use of a 7 hour cross country flight last week where I watched a 2 hour movie, played Phase for at least an hour, listened to an hour of an audiobook, watched three 20 minute Anderson Cooper Podcasts among others, looked at pictures and listened to music. Therefore, I used every single aspect of the iPod Classic for hours, numerous times and it has never given me a problem.

If you like buying products that are worth the money are going to add happiness and convenience to your life then the iPod classic is for you.

"Just not good enough"
I wanted to use it as an external drive for my 91gb of music between my mac laptop and my pc. Just to find out you can not do this. You van only have your ipod formated to one-pc or mac-not both. Sound quality is a little worse than my older 30gb video ipod. So I kept my older ipod.

"Exceeds Expectation"
The 6th Generation Ipod Classic exceeded my expectations. Software problems mentioned in some other reviews are non-existent. I did purchase Bose ear pieces due to the fact that the ear pieces which come with the Apple are hard to keep in the ear. I use the unit in the home, car and gym. I did purchase an "incase" leather case which protects the unit and make it easy to clip on belt or waistband, or just put in your pocket.

What our customer's say!

"Great Product! ", This is the sixth IPOD purchased by my family. It gets better every generation. Great product. Software is easy to use and downloading is very easy. Apple's MP3 players are the best.

"Good but not great...minor disappointments...", Everybody knows about ipod...no need to say about +ves...
but there are few disappointments compared to few others in market...

1. Ipod classic is bigger than most other models in that area...but I wish apple has concentrated little bit on increasing the screen size atleast about half an inch...
2. No wireless connection where everyone else is giving bluetooth or wi-fi
3. FM radio
4. SD Card capability is not needed, I feel with so much storage but apple can think about it...
5. Built-in speakers...

I think everyone else is cashing in those minor quirks...Hope apple comes up with something new in the next generation...

"Before You Buy One...", While the iPod classic is nowhere perfect, mostly thanks to a busted interface (minus one star) and the approach of another generation (minus one star), it's still the best value in capacity, especially the fact that you can get 160 GB when, about three years ago, the iPod Photo was priced the same.

There are plenty of improvements. The interface has gone a renovation. First off, it is split in half now, one side with the menu choices, and the other that features icons explaining what feature it is. The capacity is even more of a deal and you can hold a lot more videos and photos to go along with your music for a lower price. While I miss solitare, the other games are pretty fun, and the Apple store has drastically improved their shelves with a lot more games (most of the eary games were a joke, anyway). The cover flow is another cool way to show off your album collection if your into that stuff. The battery has been improved, with 30 hours worth of listening, and It's measured by factors that can easily be reduced by things that don't tax the battery. It's huge and able to use, and people who have owned iPod's in the pass will easily fall in love with it's familiar yet new territory.

The main problem with the iPod classic, is it's interface. iPod's have been always known for it's awesome interface and design ethics. While the menus are certainly good designed, and actually better than the first one (as explained before), the click wheel is extremely sensitive, harder to use, you will mess up quite a bit. My least favorite part, though, is the way the menus lag. I don't expect it to be wizard fast, after all, it is a hard drive, but come on Apple, it's idiotic. It's akin to trudging through a slow computer, what happens when you try to switch users on a computer, and go on your profile while five other programs run in the other. It's extremely annoying. Just check out one at your local Apple store, and try test driving one. It feels like it's going to crash any second, and feels very unstable.

Also, considering that Apple always "surprises" everybody every fall, updating the iPod's yearly, expect to see one. Come people, Apple has updated the iPod lines every year during the fall, there has to be a method to their supposed surprises (madness doesn't quite fit the bill, but you know what I mean). It can't be that hard to show a pattern, and Apple is more concerned with staying ahead than being tricky people. And Apple may not just update the capacity, but Apple have always been able to have some cool new features under their sleeves.

Well, in the end, it's up to you. If the space is enough for you (honestly though, I don't really think 160 GB has much use for the average iPod consumer), love the interface, have the click wheel nailed down, and can stand the lag (some people have no idea it has it, but It bugs me a lot), go for it. For me though, if Apple had cleaned up the problems and it was just released, this would easily been a five star iPod. Even still, it still is a good iPod for those who have extremely large media collections, but be aware of the interface and the approach of another generation.

"Love it!", My husband surprised me with this Ipod for my birthday. It's my first one and I'm really happy with it. The sound quality is amazing, and you get all the features an Ipod can offer you such as video, pictures, music, etc. After using it every day for five months I haven't had any problem with it, it works perfectly. I really love this product.

"The best iPod yet!", I had tried an iPod touch for about 6 months because I thought the wi-fi internet would be cool. It kind of was, but you'd be surprised how hard it can be to find a wi-fi hot spot, and with only the 8gig model, I could only have some of my music, and 1 or 2 movies to watch. So I traded it in for the 80gig classic iPod and all of my music and movies fit on it, and I still have another 40 gigs to go.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Grandson loves it", My grandson loves this. Now I wish I could get the earphones out so he can listen to me. :-}

"Love my iPod", Hey... it's an iPod... It works like it should and everyone knows they are cool.

"Very happy with the results", I read a large selection of all reviews and decided to go ahead with the purchase. While it wasn't quite as "Plug and play" as I might have hoped, it was user error on my part that slowed me down getting audio books loaded. Once I got that figured out, in less than a day, I had my entire audio book collection on it and I'm over the moon with the sound quality, ease of use, and pure amazement at what this thing can do.

"All my music, all my Mythbusters, all my movies, still 16gb!", My 80gb classic has been great. I have over 6 DAYS of video on it and all of my music and it still has about 16gb to go. When it was about 3 months old, the drive hit 40gb and refused to go any further, not one MB. I took it to the apple store, they reformatted it, still the same problem. Took it back again, they replaced it. Flawless ever since. I use a JBL mini on stage with this and it works great. I have a pelican hard case for it and it has kept it in absolute pristine condition. I made an adapter with a couple of radio shack parts that allows my ipod to run off of an Energizer portable DVD player battery and charge off of it as well. I recharged the ipod 5 times off of the DVD battery and it's charge indicator NEVER WENT DOWN. I would have chewed my own head off to escape while stuck in an airport for 10 hours were it not for this device. I really cannot say enough nice things about it. I would also recommend the following to make the most of this Ipod.

1. Get Magic DVD Ripper. It will convert any movie to MP4 for your ipod.

2. Get the Pelican Hard case. Indestructable and water tight. You can listen to it while the case is sealed through an external jack.

3. The JBL mini on stage will let you play music and video without earphones, great for when you just want background music or sound while working.

4. Get a good set of noise cancelling headphones. You won't believe how much nicer they sound than the earbuds and how much nicer a flight or car trip is with them.

5. Go to Radio shack. Get a female power jack in the electronic parts department. Get a female cigarette lighter socket. Solder the socket to the female power jack (make sure you have the polarity right!!!) Get an Ipod cigarette lighter plug. Plug your portable DVD player battery into the female power jack (you have several options to buy, match them with the plugs that come with the DVD battery). Plug the ipod cord into the cigarette lighter plug and into the ipod. Even though my DVD battery is 9.6 volts, the ipod will still charge from it and run off of it, for days if necessary. This may seem like a lot of fuss, but when you are far from outlets and vehicles as I often am, it will allow you to be completely self contained for a very long time. There is little that I hate more than boredom, and this has spared me from it.

6. It comes with the games Klondike, Vortex and I-quiz. I have added Tetris and Bejwelled 2 and love them.

I am currently experimenting with a pair of virtual reality glasses and will let you know how they along with this ipod work out. I think that with the two combined, I will have a tremendous entertainment system that fits into a small pelican case.

This is without question the best gizmo I have ever bought.

"not able to pop in a battery", I have NEVER understood the hype about ipods... GREATEST DISADVANTAGE, YOU CANNOT PUT IN ANOTHER BATTERY, when it's empty. Should be possible to switch a battery as easy as it is with a cellphone and a a digital camera.
You're on a holiday trip, or at the beach, and halfway, you run out of power... LAUGHABLE.
and when the battery is dead in 3 or 4 years time, you can send it off to an apple center to have another one put in for 60 dollar. PLUS shipping costs...
My idea about this is that all people who are soooo drawn into the ipod hype have lost their brain.
