"Utter Garbage: Puts the "Harm" into "Harmony""
DO NOT BUY HARMONY DEVICES!

After 4 days of trying to get this to work and extensive interactions with morons at Logitech customer service i'm giving up. There were bugs in the firmware of the remote and the extender and after hours of interactions I found out it won't control my devices and takes minutes to boot up and is just a vile piece of bad design.

This product is completely and utterly worthless and I'm furious
at Microsoft once again.

I look forward to the day that Microsoft and Logitech file
for bankruptcy.

"Not perfect, but I'll never go back to an ordinary remote!"
I've had the Harmony 1000 and RF Extender for a year and love it! I have a very complex system but I'm one of the lucky one's cuz setup was a breeze. Sure, it's got some quirks, but nothing so bad that I regret buying it or have stopped using it. Truth is, I can't imagine ever going back to my old universal remote. Or worse still, an array of manufacturer's remotes sitting on the table. For my experience, this remote was worth every penny and the RF Extender is an added must have!

Back when I got this, the remote was $275 with a rebate on the RF Extender which covered the entire cost, making it free. The software used to configure the remote has its limitations, but I think it's intentionally designed that way to help people with limited understanding of cabling and video inputs and outputs. If you have a basic grasp of what channel or video inputs your components need to be on, then you really shouldn't have much trouble. I was able to setup a complex home theater system with an HDTV, Onkyo receiver, 2 DVD players, 2 DirecTV HD DVRs and a multi CD player all within 90min. I was so encouraged by how simple it was that I then setup a second TV in the bedroom with a VCR.

I think where some people may have trouble is with a lack of patience. We expect everything to work perfect out of the box with little effort. The RF Extender also adds a slight delay to the equation because when you push a hard button or touch the screen, there's a nano second delay before you get the desired result. But it's not that big a deal really once you get used to it. We also tend to resist change and this remote as a stark departure from the standard rectangular remote with rubbery buttons you're likely used to. For me, I wanted a remote that was the next step up from the old boring remotes we all know. But that's not to say it doesn't have some issues though.

I gave the remote 4 stars instead of five because of the quirks. Sometimes I get runaway volume where it goes all the way up or down after just one button press. Others have said they can only correct the problem by popping out the battery, but I've never had to do that. I just hit a couple different hard buttons on the remote which stops the problem for me. I have, however, had to pull the battery out once or twice when the remote wouldn't respond. But that's been pretty rare. I liken it to having to reboot a computer and I've come to realize that I should treat the remote like a computer, and give it time to "boot up" when I remove it from the charging cradle. This isn't an official suggestion from Logitech. I've just noticed that when I pull it off the charger and use it immediately, that's when problems can happen. But if I take it off the charger and set it aside for a couple minutes before using it, I rarely have problems. Also, keep in mind if you've setup a complex system, there's bound to be a few hiccups from time to time. But for me, nothing I consider to be a big deal.

Overall, I'm very happy with this remote and can't imagine not having it in my life. If you're reading about some of the problems people have had and are on the fence with buying it, why not give it a try for yourself? After all, you can always return it if it doesn't work for you. And who knows, you may very well love it as much as I do.

Good luck!!

"Too quirky to really replace all the standard remotes"
I'll keep it short:
My Harmony 1000 stalls too often, actually reqiring me to take out the battery and repower it. Then, it often seems to forget various tasks of an activity, forcing me to go through a tedious "Everything not working yet?" wizard.
Navigating through the touch screen menues is very cumbersome, as the fairly mediocre touch screen allows only 9 (non-editable) buttons per screen.
The setup routine is very user-UNfriendly as well. Adding a specific command to an activity compares to rocket science.

The idea of uniting all your remotes to one single touch-screen-based controller for only a few hundred dollars is a (very) good one. And Logitech does deliver 85% of this promise. But lacking the final 15%, my Harmony mostly sits on its dock, unused.

"Some great ideas, software a little weak and unreliable..."
I love the idea of "activity based" remote. You set to do common-sense tasks like "watch TV" or "watch DVD", and for each activity it turns on the right things to the right settings, and gives you all the relevant controls. It'll turn everything on and off, and let you adjust volume, change channels, etc. without ever needing to tell it which device you're controlling while you use it, that's all determined by the activity.

The set-up software is weak. Even though it runs as PC software, it clearly works mostly as web-based software and is calling the Windows built-in browser functions for most screens. Sometimes after making settings you get errors like "page not found" and when you click next it gives a Windows dialog about needing to "re-submit form data" as if you were in a web browser, even if you're just programming changing settings via the USB cable.

Sometimes it takes a really long time to connect to the remote, and you don't know if it's an Internet problem or a firewire stopping the web-based software from working with a peripheral, or what. The remote never even changes its screen to say "USB mode" or anything, it just ignores the connection most of the time.

The help screens in the software aren't all that helpful. You choose a Sony Playstation 3 as a device, it gives you a screen saying you need an optional Nyco Infrared receiver. But if you have one, it doesn't tell you what device settings to use for it, it just says you need one, without asking if you have it or suggesting any settings.

Once it's all working this can work well, but you certainly need to jump through a few hoops to get it set up.

What our customer's say!

"Good luck with firmware updates.", This is hands down the absolute worst product I've purchased in years. I have the Harmony 880. That remote works and works well. Here are my concerns with the Harmony 1000.

1. Firmware updates. Out of the box, the unit did not work. I installed the battery, it tried to boot and hanged on the logitech startup screen. Since the owner's manual is largely useless, I searched the internet to find a Safe Mode which the device can boot to. (Hold the power key button and plug in the battery) In Safe Mode I was finally able to manually flash the firmware. However, even this method took several attempts. In addition, asking to update the firmware via the Logitech software seems to reliably breaks the unit. Afterwhich, you'll need to go back and flash the firmware again via Safe Mode.

2. The battery life is about 1 useful night. After one night, the battery will indicate it's empty. Mind you, I'm not channel surfing and the backlight timer for the LCD is set to the absolute minimum time.

Overall it's nice when it works; however, the price tag absolutely does not outweigh the cons. Perhaps future firmware updates will correct some of the issues. However, the latest firmware version (5.0) does not correct key usability concerns. I cannot use this product nor would I recommend it.

In short the old Harmony 880 is a great remote. Decent battery life, reliably works. The Harmony 1000 is an overpriced, under developed, rushed to market heap of slag.

"Wonderful!", Pros:
-you can control just about EVERYTHING with this little gadget
-the touchscreen is very responsive
-side hard buttons are firm, and can be easily "memorized" for quick control of volume, selection, muting...
-the two side panels on each side of the screen, have self-explanatory buttons, that will match the "most common" buttons that you have on you DVD, PVR, Digital Cable...remotes!
-you can program the screen color and your favorite (you can even put small broadcaster pictures in) television channels
-the main menu controls are easy to use...calibration, volume, brightness, and if you want to put the "Help" menu on the screen

-The battery LAST A LONG TIME...don't believe the other reviews that say it last only a few hours to one day!!!!

**The best thing about this remote, is its Help function**
-If anything goes wrong, like you accidently turned off the TV (or something like that), or the incorrect input/output is on, the remote will ask you if you need help, and will go step-by-step, asking you simple questions...like:
"Is the TV on?...Is the Home Theatre System on?...Is the Home Theatre System set to HDMI II?..."

I'm able to control my:
-Cable
-DVD
-Home Theater System (for music)
-Windows Media Player on my laptop
(I have not tried the radio)

In addition, the remote's program on the computer is very user friendly. You can easily add and remove appliances, and events (Watch TV).

Cons:
-The only con I can think about is that about once every month, the remote freezes, before you turn it on...ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS plug it into the computer and update it...it only "freezes" because it needs to be updated...

THIS IS DEFINITELY WORTH THE MONEY...I had 5 remotes on my coffee table...now I just have one!

"Best Remote I've Owned", I've reviewed all the reviews of this Harmony model. And, here's the upshot. The set up may be the hardest thing to overcome with new users. And I suspect that the problems most users have is with the software, not the device. By that I mean all of the upper series Harmony remotes operate on the same principal: you charge the remote; you install the software on a pc connected to the Internet; you connect the remote via a USB cord (supplied)to the PC (or laptop). Then you log onto the free Logitech you created when you installed the software; you list the model numbers and brand of the devices you will control with the remote; and setup the activity you wish to perform (watch TV, watch Blu-ray). This last one may confuse some as they think you tell select the device, but in actuality, you wan to select and activity and have the remote turn on or off all the devices associated with the activity you wan to perform. Once done, save your settings and then it will reboot and initialize the remote and 99% if not 100% of the buttons on your original device remote will also appear on the nice color screen for you to access. It even has a provision to add buttons, ir even learn buttons on your original remote to ensure you get everything you had with the original remote. So, this is the "leanring curve" and once you do it and understad it, it's simple form then on.

Now, I did this very same thing with the same software when I had the Harmony 880. When I bought the 1000, I was mildly surprised..and delighted to find that it had not changed and all I had to do was change my remote listed from the 880 to the 1000.

The 1000 works as advertised..perfectly. If you get impatient and forget to point the remote toward your tv/devices for the few seconds it requires to initialize and turn on all your devices for a particular activity, then you can just press help and it will guide you through a couple of questions about what is on or off and once you select the right answer, the remote will fix them accordingly. So simple and intuitive. If, by chance, you have devices hidden behind cabinet doors, then add the remote extender to ensure the signal can reach each device. If your devices are plainly visible and near the TV, then you won't need an extender.

And did I state that this remote just looks..well..cool? Great display..classy look and light feel. I love the touch screen! I've ha done now about 9 months and it has been problem free and the batteries are dependable as long as I return the remote to the cradle. Right ow the price on Amazon is right, as I bought mine on Amazon for $299. At a major retailer, this was $499.

I love mine, won't trade it anytime soon, although I am a gadget freak. I even bought one for my son, who installed it on his Mac notebook. I had to have something to corral seven remotes as I was running out of end table room and it looked like an eyesore.

Don't be dissuaded by negative reviews unless you are gadget-challenged, can't usually or easily set up most electronics. If so, this one is not for you. You should stick to your original remote with the big buttons.

"Great Idea...but a bit buggy", I've had the remote for a while now and feel I can give a fair review.
First of all, the ability to control all my components with only one remote is great. It's very handy not to have to search all over, for the remote that you haven't seen for a week, just to turn on the DVD player. This does it all with the push of one button. Well, most of the time! You must make sure the remote is pointed at all the components when you give it a command. If for some reason one component did not start, there is a very easy HELP menu that will fix the problem in a hurry.

My biggest complaint is the accuracy of the touch screen. THIS NEEDS SOME WORK!! Many times I will want to go to, let's say, channel 408 and I will end up with something like 4088 or 40 or 4408, you get the idea. The other button problem is with the four way hat switch. You have to be very deliberate when you use this one. Also, the markings on the "Hard Buttons" are VERY hard to see because of the chrome color of the buttons.

The set up was not very straight forward and took me, and the Technical people at Logitech, most of an entire afternoon to get the unit running to my satisfaction.

BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for a nice Universal Remote, this will fit the bill.

PROS:
Fairly easy to use.
Operates all my components with one remote.
Easy to read screen.
Well made and light.
Good battery life.
Very helpful Tech Support.

CONS:
Difficult initial set up.
Inaccurate touch screen.
Hard to read "Hard Buttons".
Must have a good line of site to the components. (would be better if it was RF)

"Good for static people", Good for static people? What I mean is for those folks who don't fast forward or use the touch screen.. I'm a TIVO guy and a FFWD guy and having to watch your thumb to make sure you hit the button and stop it before the commercials are over.. Not Good..

I have the Harmony One and now have a 890 replacing this one.. It's a sweet eye catching device.. but functional for us non static users---Not so much.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Logitech Harmony 1000 Advanced Universal Remote ", I had to return this item. It's impossible to use. It took hours to program all the variuos remotes to this unit. Each different remote must be programmed by each remote key. Each screen only holds 9 buttons and you can't program 0-9 on one screen. So when you want to see a channel that has 3 numbers and one of them is 9 you can't enter all 3 numbers before the remote goes back to the home sceen. Also when you push a button it is so sensitive that it enters your cammand twice.

"don't buy this remote", Bought this remote over a year ago... nothing but problems. Own many Harmony remotes and while the most expensive, it is the worst. If it worked, it still would be awkward. I would purchase a Harmony One at half the price. Don't waste your money!!!!

"A useless peice of rubbish", I have owned this for one day. Its going back......It stopped working almost instantly. Has Java errors like crazy and updating the Firmware and the Software produce no result. After waiting for ever for tech support decided to send it back instead.

"Delivers as advertised!", This is a great product. Does everything Logitech claims it does, no hassle, easy setup, and a beautiful piece of industrial engineering. Best remote control device I've ever owned. Took me 15 minutes to set everything up after charging it. No complaints, just kudos to Logitech.

"Universal Remote", This is a replacement for the Logitec Harmony Universal remote. The 1st purchase was returned because the battery would not hold a charge. The replacement was quickly sent and it works quite well. Set up was easy and customer service has been exceptional, to date.
