"Great game!"
My daughter who is almost four, absolutely loves this game. It can get a bit pricey, so beware of that. Especially if your child goes through the game quickly. I had no problem canceling my subscription. I emailed them from the website and they canceled it the same day, no questions asked. Of course I had to resubscribe because my daughter was so heartbroken. We've introduced her to alot of computer games, but this game is by the far the one she has played the most and enjoyed. I love the learning aspect of it as well, not just pointless running around. I highly recommend it if you don't mind the price after all the updates. I only gave it 4 stars because of the price.

"Disappointed - requires expensive subscription"
My kids love this program. I was very happy that I purchased it - but I did not realize that it only comes with the first two levels. So for $20 you get your kids hooked and they very quickly master the games in the beginner levels and they can't go to any new "worlds" unless I pay $8 per level. Very Disappointing!! I thought I was buying a package. I would have gladly paid a flat $39 -$49 for an all-inclusive package. But $20 plus $65 (that's the bundled rate) is too expensive!!! (I have a kindergartner and a second grader so I'm in for $170 for both "worlds".) I'm sorry that I bought it. My kids find so many excellent educational websites for free!!!!

"Good Value, enjoyable but caveat emptor !"
Our 5 yr old daughter really enjoys these learning games.
The three things you should know about this software:
1. Its really well done but takes some getting used to. Sit down and run through it with your child, just dont install and set them free. It can be frustrating at first and a bit overwhelming. The program starts and the child is immediately introduced to characters, told about earning gems and badges and playing games and on and on, but after a little patient investment, all of it starts to pay off. I thought it was a bit confusing to begin with, but after 1 month, she and I understand all aspects of the game.
2. While its true you only get 2 units with the starter pack (out of 12), there are numerous activities, games and things to see and explore within those two units. Going beyond those two units, IF you chose to do so, will cost you money, either one at a time or you can buy the rest in one transaction. At first I thought it was a screw job, but I see there is a lot to the program and for $20, I think its a good value and well done.
3. The makers of this program are trying to get you, the parent, involved in monitoring the progress. You will get reports, you can see where your child is exceling and needs more work, etc. If you wanted a simple install and set em free experience (numerous titles available for that), this isn't for you. So far we're pleased and she really enjoys the interaction, characterizations and all that.
For example, there is a portion of the program where you can create cards via a painting routine. That painting routine is full featured allowing for lots of imagination from adding your own pictures, to your own sounds (only if you have a microphone) and lots of options. The quality of that one little aspect of the program is indicative of the time that went into the entire program. She loves it and could just paint and doodle for an hour.
In summary, we're pleased with the small investment; its better than most of the "learning" programs out there. Is it worth $80+ for all 12 units. I can't say. That is a lot of money for a program, but maybe it IS worth it. I can say its a good value for $20, just be advised that you'll be prompted to continue on a subscription basis for additional units, and that is never good. Subscriptions are notoriously difficult to terminate.

May 08 update: We ended up purchasing the whole program; all 12 "units" as their called. My 5 yr old daughter loved exploring this program. Its a great combination of learning activities, task performing and rewards, and just plain good ole exploring a virtual world...on a 5 yr old's level. I noticed she spent equal time doing all 3 and I know that the learning games echoed what she learned in school or will be learning in school. I reviewed her progress on this learning program with her teachers and much to my (pleasant) surprise, she was doing the same things in school. She performed very well in school; therefore I think this program is a perfect compliment to a preschool program.

"My Kindergartener loved it!"
We weren't sure about this game after having a bad experience with Jumpstart Advanced Preschool, but we picked it up on a whim at Costco for our son's birthday. He wasn't excited about it after playing the older game either, so it sat on the shelf for a couple of months. Then he started talking about playing computer games at school so we brought it out, blew off the dust and installed it (on a relatively new vista laptop).

The difference is amazing! Instead of a static cartoon-based game that crashes frequently (Advanced series), Jumpstart World is a 3D world not unlike a simplified version of a Pixar movie. The character is controlled through the arrow keys to walk around and interact with other characters in first person perspective ("camera" behind your character's head so you always see what's in front of you). I can imagine the 3D graphics being pretty taxing on an older computer, but it ran smoothly we only had it crash once or twice in the several months he's been playing it.

The learning games are great and appropriate for a kindergarten level. The progression is logical, and best of all, the "fun" features are slowly unlocked so that your child has to play and pass the learning games in order to continue the fun part of earning "badges" and discovering new areas and abilities.

Our son engaged with the characters and talked about them like they were real friends. Eventually, we had to establish limits on how long he could play each day because he was starting to get addicted! All fun aside, this has definitely helped him in school. We just bought the 1st grade version and he's playing it right now - very excited.

It is kind of pricey to by all 12 adventure packs, but well worth it to me for the many, many hours of entertainment and enrichment. A parent, you just have to be educated and know what you're getting into here. You can register up to three kids, so our three year old is playing too - just at a much slower pace.

Why didn't I give it five stars?

You MUST start the game with the CD in the drive. Totally unnecessary and very annoying considering the content is mostly downloaded from the internet. Just don't lose or scratch the disk and you'll be OK.

You MUST be connected to the internet to start the game. However, once the game is started, you're able to disconnect from the internet and you just need to connect again when you exit the game (records are uploaded to the website for you to view on the parent page and track progress).

What our customer's say!

"Couldn't install on Vista64", I was not able to install this software on Vista-64. The box also does not make it clear about having to register personal information online just to install the software. A subscription is not clear on the outside of the box, and I'm still not sure whether the monthly payment is absolutely required. I couldn't find anything on the box about even requiring a monthly payment. On Vista-64 at the beginning of installation, the installation software opened an Internet Explorer box to register (which the software says is needed for tracking your child's progress). Why can't they just track the progress on my computer??? Most software doesn't open a web browser, and this step is obviously fraught with problems.

After registering through the web browser, the installation software failed to install. The company's website describes this problem and says to download a file called JSWorldRegIniPatch to fix this problem. I downloaded that file, ran it, and tried to reinstall. After registering again, the software would still not install. I went through this about 10 frustrating times and gave up. There aren't many places to deviate from the installation/registration path, so this points to software that isn't correctly designed and correctly tested.

After this frustrating experience, I tried returning this broken software to the store where I bought it, and they said the best they could do was to replace it with the exact same software... A lot of good that would do. The store finally agreed to a store credit after they couldn't install it either. Anyway, this may work fine on 32-bit Vista, but wouldn't even install on my PC. The fault of this broken software complete lies with the company who created it. It is not hard to create software that installs correctly, but for whatever reason, this company decided that it would be best to intrusively gather information about its customers and to charge a monthly fee. In trying to implement these unfriendly policies, they created software that won't even install.

"3 1/2 Year Old Daughter and Dad VERY Impressed!", My 3 1/2 year old daughter has been on the computer since age 18 months. She is very skilled with the mouse, but hasn't had much opportunity to use a keyboard. This game requires primarily keyboard, (using arrow keys and space bar), to navigate and interact with the characters...and the mouse to activate various featues and to play some games. After about an hour she was able to move around the 3-D interactive world very well and she quickly began to recognize that when the mouse symbol appeared that she could activate a feature using the mouse.

We have purchased about 25 computer games from her over the past several years, but none come close to the clever interaction that has been interwoven into this program. There is a wonderful mixture of exploration, fun, and learning...not to mention delightful surprise.

Though we have only worked through the first level, the game offerings were excellent for her. She was able to perform 80% of the games solo, (with parent sit-by), and the rest of the games I had to perform with her, but I was able to ask her questions and prompt her for the correct response.

My daughter loves this game so much that I have to limit use. Prior, I had a 30 minute rule and then we would have to read books, play, paint, etc. However, I have allowed her to play this game for 1 hour the past 2 weeks...though I am starting to cut back to the original 30. The reason I am fudging on my own rule is because she enjoys both the 3D environment and the lessons/games equally. So, she is spending a lot of time playing certain sorting, alphabet, and counting games over and over.

I haven't had to start shelling bucks out yet for additional adventure packs, but I will have no problem investing particularly when I look at the stack of old CD's I have purchased for her...some for a premium...with little true learning/benefit.

I would recommend this highly, but as a previous parent said, you should always be available to your child as they play the game...and for little ones like my daughter, you might as well camp out...but it's worth it!

"My daughter loved it!", My daughter absolutely loved this game. She just turned 5 in April & couldn't get enough of this game. It helped her w/her reading & math. I couldn't be happier with this product.

"Good teaching material, but awfully buggy software", My 3-year old likes to play with this software. I think its educational contents are great. Unfortunately, it is full of bugs that stop it from running. I have to reinstall it every 2 weeks.

"My 3 1/2 year old loves this!", First the good side: My 3 1/2 year old loves this game. It engages him for a very long time. I do usually have to sit with him to work through the lessons but he loves being rewarded by earning gems and badges. He does navigate the program on his own using the mouse and arrow keys. He didn't even know how to "point and click" with a mouse before I got this program. It also teaches him how to follow directions. You do have to listen to directions carefully. It really is a great learning tool.
The bad side: As mentioned in previous reviews there are only 2 units given with the purchase of the program. If you want to "unlock" the remaining 10 units it's a 7.99 charge per unit. My son plays this so much that he's already unlocked up through unit 8 this month already. So, my credit card has been charged with over $60 this month. I don't love that but he is learning and loves this game that I'm not going to complain too much.
Customer Service/Technical help: I only had to email them one time for technical help regarding the game and some instructions it was giving the neither me or my son could figure out. I got an email back within 24 hours and it was informative. We figured out what we needed to do.

All in all, I would recommend this game. If your child is younger, like mine, be prepared to spend time at the computer with your child.

"Better than others that I tried. My son loves it!", My son loves this game! It's designed so much better than the others that he has (and he has Disney kindergarten Bundle, Clifford Thinking Adventures, and Franklin). While other games are entertaining (especially Franklin goes to school), Jump Start World has way more games than other CDs and the graphics are great! My son is currently on the second module and I am definitely getting the rest for him. He can play for hours and even though the game only has the first 2 units on the CD, it's still more than other CDs offer. And the need to get the lessons mastered to progress to the next level really makes him learn!

"Great Learning Tool", My five year old had played JumpStart games in the past so we got this for him for Christmas. It really makes learning contagious as it's so much fun he doesn't even realize he's learning new things as he goes.

One small warning, however. This game only provides the first couple modules of content. After that JumpStart hits you up for a subscription or a lump sum payment for the additional content. Once your child starts playing the game it's pretty hard to stop and not pay for the expansions.

"Your one stop for PC edutainment!!", I started searching the net for preschool software after being sorely disappointed with LeapFrog's Clickstart computer. I wanted my son to learn how to use a mouse and keyboard but the Clickstart was simply too easy for him. I stumbled across this game while searching here on Amazon. I went to their website and downloaded the free trial and tried it out before I let my son play it. It took me over 2 hours to complete all the learning games and that was only playing each one once, and obviously I was speeding through them much faster than a child of the recommended age would. This convinced me that the title would provide many hours of fun for my son, so I decided to let him try it.

He LOVES it!! Now, he's just shy of 3 so not quite yet preschool age, but he picked up on the controls immediately. He is able to navigate with the arrow keys perfectly while walking around the world and in the learning games. In the games that require the mouse, he still needs my assistance in moving the mouse but he is all too eager to point out or say the answers and I click on them for him. (Working on finding him a child-sized mouse to alleviate this!)

Everything about this game entrances him. The graphics, the sounds, the adorable characters and voices, everything is top notch and he feels like a big boy playing games like mommy and daddy, and the best part is, he's learning at the same time!!! The joy on his face when he gets new gems after completing a game is priceless.

One slight gripe of mine is that they didn't disable the windows key, so my son will accidentally hit it once in a while, minimizing the game. He doesn't yet understand how to bring the game back up but I'm always sitting right beside him when he plays so I fix it for him before he gets annoyed.

I love that you can create your own custom certificates to reward your child for their progress. Each time they receive a super gem, they can go to their mailbox and receive a certificate that you make on the parent website. I do wish they could receive the certificates more often because I have a feeling it will take my son at least a few weeks to earn a super gem but we can reward him in our own ways in addition to the super gems.

I also love that the program keeps track of your child's progress and emails you frequently about how they're doing so you know what they need to work on.

You do have to pay for the additional adventure packs (8 bucks each) which is a bit steep. I wouldn't have had much issue if they were a few bucks cheaper, but the way I see it, there are so many activities for him here that buying him a new adventure pack for 8 bucks every month is much cheaper than buying him another full priced game that will only hold his attention for a few days.

I highly recommend downloading the trial. It lets you play all the way through the first adventure and will give you a good idea of what to expect. If nothing else, let your child play the trial for a few weeks and if they master the first area, you can then make the decision if you want to purchase the full game. It's a steal for 20 bucks, in my opinion!!

"Dissapointing", I bought this with very high expectations but was sorely disappointed. The concept is awesome and if it worked they would be an industry leader. However, we encountered several bugs in the game that made it completely non-functional in certain learning games. If all the games were not accomplished the program would not let the child progress to the next unit. So we reached a point that the game was completely static and unable to move on. We contacted the customer service department and while they were able to fix a few things that were screwed up they stopped answering our e-mails when we got to a bug that couldn't be addressed.

"Beware of Subscriptions", I liked the product; my daughter learned a lot. Now I am trying to cancel, because every time she uses it, our credit card gets charged $7.99. I had to search for how to cancel; the website says cancel by calling a long distance number (not an 800 number). The number has a long, long wait on it. I have better things to do with my time.

Buyer, beware.
