"Great Crowes Release - 4.5 Stars"
Wow, what a treat for Crowes fans! Captured at their creative peak, these two albums are true gems. Amorica happens to be one of my top ten favorite albums of all time and "Tall" offers a blueprint into that great release. While Amorica is more polished and textured, "Tall" is by no means a weaker treatment. These classic songs are more intimate on this release and offer the listener a great midnight second helping of that great album.

"Band" is just plain and simple a smokin' old, new release. Why this sat on the shelf for ten years is beyond me. While it is very hard to single out favorites, the first two selections, "Paint an 8" and "Another Roadside Tragedy" are particularly great. A one half star hit from me for the Rhino effort. Strange codes where a song list should be on the disc. A minor issue as this is great American rock n' roll from a group of really talented musicians in their prime. What else could a fan want? Highly recommended.

"Must have for Crowes fans"
This is a must have for any true Crowes fan. The "Tall" disc is good just to finally hear what it sounds like after knowing all these years the story around it. I don't really think any of these versions are better than the Amorica versions but it's cool to hear the seeds of it. However, "Feathers" and "Thunderstorm 6:54" are great and must haves. The "Band" disc is classic Crowes. "Paint an 8", "Wyoming & Me", "My Heart is Killing Me", "Another Roadside Tragedy" are all awesome. Like I said, if you are a deep Crowes fan get it. If you just like the Crowes in passing still get it ... you'll probably like the "Band" disc.

"Wow!"
I'm a huge Crowes fan, but I honestly wasn't too excited about this newest release. Boy, was I wrong. This CD is awesome! I thought that hearing different versions of songs already released would be pretty dull, but I was dead wrong there. The alternate versions of songs like Descending, Conspiracy and Ballad In Urgency (called Lowdown on this CD) are beautiful! The unreleaed songs are fantastic as well. This is the next best thing to a new Crowes album, and I highly reccomend it for any Crowes fan or any fan of Rock n' Roll in general.

"An essential part of Americas Rock and Roll history "
An absolute must for any Black Crowes/Rock & Roll fan. The Robinson's show us why they are, and always will be part of Americas great music history!

"Another Excellant Rhino Release"
As a long time Black Crowes fan, someone who was there from the very beginning, hearing Jealous Again on the local radio station and buying their debut album, I really never thought this day would come. NEW Black Crowes material! After all this time, after the disappointment of Lions, the band's breakup, the solo albums, etc. I had pretty much come to terms with what I thought would be all the Crowes music I would ever own.

It was not meant to be. You see, I routinely check the New and Future release section of Amazon.com and still remember my excitement that July evening when there on the computer screen it said The Black Crowes: the Lost Crowes. I couldn't believe it! There was even a picture of the cd cover and a short synopsis explaining this was to be a two cd set of "session recordings" by the Crowes in 1997. List price $22.99. I couldn't care less what the asking price was, I wanted this! Well, I began the countdown to the release date: August 29, 2006. Then, as the day got closer I heard that the date had been pushed back? No explanation. Rumors began to swirl about Master Tapes and legal issues. Undaunted, I went into the nearest record store that week to shop, and what did I find? One copy of the the Lost Crowes.

After my purchase, I found out I was one of the lucky few to acquire this selection. Seems Rhino records was indeed re-issuing it due to a manufacturing defect. Hummm, that explains why when I put disc 1, the Tall sessions into my cd player it said there was only 10 tracks. And the other disc, which was supposed to have 10 tracks on it, actually had 16! Who cares! All the music was there for me to enjoy. All to myself. The rest of you guys would have to wait another month. Well, it's finally here.

Here is what you want to know: The Tall sessions, recorded in the Fall of 1993 in Los Angeles, California. The material from these sessions eventually produced the Amorica album (1994). The Band sessions were recorded in May of 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia. This music is mostly stuff we've never heard, basically New Black Crowes songs. Only one track, #3: If It Ever Stops Raining, sounds familier. That's because it uses the very same guitar riff as "By Your Side", but with different lyrics. This song eventually evolved into the title track, By Your Side.

Here is a short song by song description: The Band Sessions - 1997

1 Paint An 8 - (3:05) Typical rockin' Crowes tunes, great opener.
2 Another Roadside Tragedy - (5:31) Another rocker with a nice transition in the middle, slowing down, you can tell the band is kind of feeling their way thru the song.
3 If It Ever Stops Raining - (4:45) Unmistakable opening riffs to By Your Side, that sounds like an early version of the song.
4 Wyoming And Me - (4:15) slower, acoustic number with horns.
5 Predictable - (3:14) Electric, good drums, good guitar solo.
6 Never Forget This Song - ( 3:43) Good, typical Crowes song. You get
the impression they are trying to work out the lyrics (remember,
these are sessions)
7 Life Vest - (3:19) A little more laid-back, semi-acoustic track.
8 Grinning' - (3:15) Upbeat, almost pop song. Could easily fit on the By Your Side album.
9 My Heart's Killing Me - (5:06) Starts out slow, acoustic, with a
country cantina feel to it. Strings in the background.
10 Peace Anyway - (4:00) A rockin' electric number, with typical Crowes background vocals already added.
Total Time - (40:21)

The Tall Sessions - 1993

1 A Conspiracy - (4:39) [Amorica] slightly different vocal delivery with
the same lyrics, for the most part. Different guitar solo.
2 Evil Eye - (4:20) [3 Snakes] alternate version using different chorus.
3 Cursed Diamond - (5:45) [Amorica] only slightly different version.
4 London P25 - (3:33) [Amorica] another slightly different version.
5 Dirty Hair Halo - (4:50) "New" semi psychedelic tune with lots of wah- wah pedel style guitar.
6 Hi Head Blues - (4:20) [Amorica] early demo take with a much more stripped down feel over-all.
7 Feathers - (6:40) "New" one of the longer songs. Starts out with a
slow, bluesy kind of atmospheric sound. Builds to a mild
crescendo, then slows down again, short blues guitar solo, very
cool!
8 Nonfiction - (4:12) [Amorica] rough demo mix
9 Tied Up and Swallow - (4:20) "New" Heavy rocker with lots of guitars.
10 Wiser Time - (6:17) [Amorica] slightly longer than original version.
11 Sunday Buttermilk Waltz - (2:30) Instrumental, dueling acoustic
guitars of Marc Ford and Rich Robinson. Justa shorter version of
the 5 minutes they play on the new dvd Freak n' Roll into the
Fog (2006).
12 Descending - (5:25) [Amorica] slightly slower alternative take as the original version with more piano, less acoustic slide guitar,
different chorus sung by the background singers, and a French horn!
13 Lowdown - (4:50) this song eventually evolved into Ballad of Urgency off the Amorica cd.
14 Tornado - (2:40) "New" a short acoustic song, nothing but a guitar and Chris singing. An obvious demo track.
15 Song of the Flesh - (3:44) "New" a groovy, rockin' number with some good harmonica in it. You can really tell this was a "work in progress" as the band works their way thru it, good guitar work,
basic lyrics.
16 Thunderstorm 6:54 - (4:02) "New" another slow one, with acoustic guitar for about the first minute, then they kick it in a bit.
Shifts from a country feel to a more dark sound, then back again.
This is a much morefinished product, with string arrangements
and polished vocals.

Total Time (72:29) Now that's what I'm talking about!! A full disc.

Basically your getting 15 New Black Crowes tunes.

HIGHLY Recommended for ANY Black Crowes Fan

What our customer's say!

"lost and found", This is good album, some of the tunes were never lost, I knew them all along. But they have just a tiny different spin on them. The Crowes continue to rock and this cd is just another example of that.

"Amazing Crowes", Its been a while since I've been compelled to review anything but these discs have blown me away from the moment I put them on. Always have been a big fan and have been gradually disappointed with everything from 3 Snakes on.

BOTH of these CDs rock. The Band disc is simply an amazing album that holds up to their greatest work. Another Roadside is one of the best rock songs I've heard in months. Why this didn't come out instead of the mediocre By The Way is totally beyond my comprehension.

I went in thinking "why do I need another Amorica" because I already love that album. But the different takes on the album are great... a bit softer and smoother. And the unreleased gems buried in the middle are simply great rock songs.

Lets hope the brothers Robinson can recreate some of this magic with their new album in the works!

"A must-have for any fan", This set of recordings not only sounds great, but it's an excellent look at the earlier versions of songs from Amorica. Fans may recognize some of the previously unreleased songs on disc 1, since a few have been staples of the live show. It's great to hear recorded versions.
All in all, new Crowes is good Crowes...even if the songs are 10 years old...

"The Lost Crowes (The Black Crows: The Tall Sessions)", Plain and Simple. If you're a Black Crowes fan get this recording.

If you're new to the Black Crowes start with the first three albums than try this one. You'll appreciate it a lot more.

"The Lost Crowes", These albums have been collected by hard core Black Crowes fans for a while now and finally this excellent collection is now available. The general public can find out what some have already known. These are some of the best tracks they ever made. Its about time they were made available. If you like Southern Harmony and Amorica, then this is a must have collection .

"Amorica should have been released in this form!!", I agree with the 2nd reviewer. "Tall" is even better than what Amorica turned out to be. Amorica is great too, but the versions on this disc are brilliant, especially the earthier more laid back version of Wiser Time.

"Band" is awesome too. There are a couple of things on here that were already released on the Sho' Nuff boxed set, but all in all, this is a completely worthwhile set if you're really into this band.

"Some good ol' blues/rock", The Black Crowes have a knack for making appealing blues/rock music with a commercial edge. This could be good, or this could be bad. Fortunately, on this two-disc set (as on their previous records), it's mostly good.

The two albums here ("Tall" and "Band") features previously unreleased performances. Overall, the songs soar--BAND's "Wyoming and Me," "Peace Anyway," "Another Roadside Tragedy," and "Never Forget This Song" rank among the Crowes' best, while TALL's "Sunday Buttermilk Waltz," "Tornado," and "Songs of the Flesh" (not to mention different versions of the already-released "Descending," "Cursed Diamond," and "Nonfiction") stand out amidst the band's lengthy repetoire. There are a few downers ("If It Ever Stops Raining" isn't nearly as enjoyable as the song it would eventually be re-written into, "By Your Side"), but mostly, these two discs feature a great blues/rock band doing what they do best: letting it all hang out. If they teach you something in the process, then all the better; but really, the Black Crowes are just here to entertain, and by God they do one hell of a job of it.

"An Unreleased Gem and a Superior "Amorica"", This is the Crowes' best recorded work, save for Southern Harmony.

"Tall" is vastly superior to "Amorica". I've always liked "Amorica", but have long thought the sound was overdone in places. Too many guitars in the mix, distortion, etc. "Tall" is leaner, the instruments are clearer and there is more emphasis on group harmonies (band members and backup singers).

The less-is-more approach suits this particular set of songs, which includes several that didn't make it on to "Amorica." "Feathers", "Dirty Haired Halo", "Evil Eye" and especially the gorgeous "Thundertstorm 654" all could have taken the spots of the lesser tunes on "Amorica".

"Band" is every bit as good and diverse (albeit much shorter) as "Tall" and much better than "By Your Side". Each and every tune is first rate Crowes material.

Highly reccomended.
