"Five Stars All The Way"
Zone Alarm Suite is an excellent and easy to use product.I've used Zone Alarm for years problem free. I decided to try Zone Alarm suite because, it offers more than just a firewall, it's a virus checker and more all rolled into one.So far it has done a wonderful job for me in all of it's product usage, problem free.I feel safer, because Zone Alarm Suite is my protector.Try it, you will like it.......

"OK but not great"
Running under XP is fine, but still does not run under Vista.

"The fun that is the internet"
This product is more than functional and continues to be better than many other products for purchase. I am impressed with its practical use with only a slightly high learning curve. After all, one should be willing to study and go through trial and error with apps/progs when doing something important as using the internet anyways. This firewall will continue to receive my support as long as it knows who the "enemy" is online and off.

"Zone Alarm Security Suite works great!"
I am very satisfied with how Zone Alarm (2007) takes care of protecting my computer. My only complaint is that it is only programmed to handle spam, etc. from Outlook and Outlook Express. I am using Thunderbird and can't get it to acknowledge this email program, so I can't use its email protection features. Thankfully, Thunderbird has its own. If I had known this, I would not have bought the suite, but just the regular program. It boots up much faster than the older version and does not seem to slow down my computer like Norton Symantec was doing. This is a great program!

"Effective but interfering to the point of CONSTANT AGGRAVATION", ZoneAlarm is good at doing what you ask - keeping the cookies, viruses, pop-ups and other annoyances at bay. I used TrendMicro/PcCillin last year and, though I had it set to block the same things as Zonealarm, when I checked, there were cookies all over, pop-ups which kept popping up -- annoyances that managed to get through. But TrendMicro/PCCillin rarely if ever interfered with speed of downloads(which probably indicates it wasn't working as hard as ZA) and ZoneAlarm CONSTANTLY interferes. I have BroadBand. If the system is scanning or downloading updates, though it says you can keep working, you can't. It's like driving on the interstate during rush hour with road construction for miles and every exit blocked. Maybe with a speedier processor, I wouldn't have these problems. My system is an Athlon Sepron 3000+ 2GHz, with 512MB RAM, and 120GB hard drive -- I'll let the more system knowledgeable of you gauge if that makes a difference in the performance of the software. I will say when I test by turning off ZA, everything goes quick, smooth, and aggravation free.

When I'm ready to purchase my next pc protector, it won't be ZoneAlarm, probably won't be TrendMicro. Of the two, I'd go with Trend, because though it didn't prevent the little annoyances, it did prevent big headaches like viruses, worms, etc, with little interference of process. What I'd like to know is..Is there software that has the benefits of both, doing what it's supposed to do without interfering with what I'm trying to do?

"Worst security software ever", This program has been a headache since day one. It is miserable to configure, hogs resources, freezes my system, and removes privelages to use other programs. To spite having given every aspect of Adobe full permission, I cannot browse a .pdf file online. I have to save it locally and then open it. Annoying but doable - except that one has to be able to view a .pdf file online to print postage from the USPS website. Then I try to download and install an update - Nope! Not allowed - insufficient privelages as the admin. No joke. My very nice laptop has been all but useless since this piece of trash was installed. I tried to get support but they want me to pay $2.95 a minute to speak to someone, my problems are listed, so I am suppose to spend the next several days emailing with someone? Seriously? This product is trash. Go buy Trend Micro.

"Won't play nice with CA Antivirus software, and ZA can't work around it.", I purchased this software with the intention of loading it up and using since I had internet access and wanted to put in some good firewall protection. I read lots of reviews on this particular software and decided it was worth the money.
I got it and began to load it but then the load aborted because of the CA Antivirus software I already have (came with the internet account.)Hey, I needed something unil I could get what I wanted.
Removing the CA software is much easier said than done (as my wife says, I know just enough about computers to be dangerous, usually more so to the computer itself lol), and ZAISS doesn't help much with the process. Basically it just says "Sorry dude. Can't do it." Then aborts.
I also went to the ZA customer support site to see if I could find out what to do, but couldn't glean a clue from it.
Long story short, I paid for some software that, at this point, I can't even use and unfortuantely, I've lost the reciept so returning it is out of the question. Lesson learned I suppose.

"Buyer beware", I appreciate that there are reviewers here who think this Zone Alarm (ZA) product is the best thing since sliced bread, and I would have agreed with them up to buying this version of the security suite...

I had been using the previous version of the ZA suite with no issues, and was fully satisifed that my PC was protected. The firewall allowed me to access what I wanted to access, and the virus scan picked up several unwanted guests prior to their arrival on my hard drive - all was good - Then I bought and installed this newer version, and that is when my troubles began.

Basically, this product paralysed my PC and stopped me doing anything. I use Windows Live Messenger to communicate with my family around the world, and had had no issue logging on and using this service prior to installing this version of the ZA security suite. However, once I had I could no longer access my messenger account other than by shutting down the ZA firewall (not a good idea) even though all my settings were allowing it to be accessed. Upon doing some research, I found that others had experienced the same problem. To address this ZA technical support (on their forum) suggests one should mannually manipulate and delete certain files on the hard drive - but this is not something I would be expecting to do with a $50 piece of security software! I also found that the ZA product was incompatible with other security software I had installed on my PC. As I trusted ZA more than these other companies, I uninstalled everything except the ZA suite. However, that caused my entire system to basically go-slow, to the point that each click and movement of the mouse took 30 seconds to register. My system was all but frozen, so I attempted to uninstall ZA. However, to do that took nearly 40 minutes.

In the end I finally got this product removed from my PC, downloaded the free ZA firewall from their website and a free virus scan from elsewhere, and my system is back to normal and running better than ever!

Postscript: Oh, I contacted ZA to tell them about this issue, and they said that as I had gone past the 30 day refund window I could not get my money back - fair enough, but that means I now have a copy of this product sitting on my bookcase doing nothing, because I am most certainly not going to sell it on (in good conscience) to anyone else!

"Security Solution", ZoneAlarm seems to completely provide protection for my system at a reasonable price

"version 7, a sub-beta version", I updated to version 7 after so-so operation with previous versions, virus and spyware update issues. After installing version 7 several times including the steps on two pages to insure a clean installation, ZA upon boot would start an update routine which was spinning its wheels in the background and could not be stopped. ZA would not scan. The firewall worked but that is about it. I spent about 8 hours on this. ZA support eventually suggested I set up a telephone conference call. I decided that this is a program that has a lot of bells and whistles but has not been debugged, alot like the hotshot versions of MS Windows we wrestled with. I am a retired engineer and have written many programs. I gave up ZA, forgot about my 50 bucks and went back to Norton. Now have Norton Security Suite 2007 for both of my computers. Had some problems at first with Norton, but once I took 30 minutes to study their menue structure I was off and running. ZA is too much trouble. When you have to edit your register to fix a problem you know you have got a program that is out of control and has not been designed properly. I looked at ZA's management team and was not impressed.

"This Product Is Not For Average Users", While I respect some folks gripe with this programs friendliness, the reality is that this security software is Not for the average user, this product is very command-oriented, meaning that it give users different level alerts (Firewall, Suspicious Behavior, Program Access Alerts, etc.) where the user allows or denies program access to and from the internet very frequently, which can be very tedious for busy users. I'm a Certified PC Technician and it took me quite awhile to get it running properly in the background without any advisory popup interruptions, you do have to carefully configure the software to recognize all of the programs that you use frequently like IE, Outlook, Instant Messaging, ISP, etc. in the 10 different areas of the software's Control Panel.

Also, the Network Configuration Wizard, automatic VPN configuration, and other features of Zone Labs security software help you to quickly set up your network environment, which again took quite sometime, but it was up and running smoothly, as for the Spyware aspect of it, that need a bit of improvement, but generally ran and found most file hidden in the registry even though I ran Ad-aware right after and found nothing, the Anti-virus did a fairly decent scan.

I would not recommend this product to busy folks, it definitely take some configuration task-time to get it working properly on many different levels, however, I do agree that the vsmon.exe and three other associated file clients, do consume a good amount of resources behind the scenes (Check Your Task Manager Processes Tab) but so do other Internet Security Software.

The software needs about 64MB (Win2000) and 128MB (WinXP) to run it, but in reality, is better if you have at least 1 or 2GB of RAM overall to run it properly on Windows, also, this product without a doubt is for Power Users who like to tweak with settings, I personally was able to run and configure the software properly the first time and haven't touched it since, without emailing or calling their questionable Tech Support Line, Also, this product is NOT Vista compatible like it suggests.

In conclusion, if you're trying this product, don't buy the 3 license user pack, get the single PC version and be ready to do some configurations and manual reading as well, because you really need to understand basic computer networking and how vulnerable pc's really are when connected to the internet specially if you're exchanging information online, Trust me, I've tried most programs in this category of Internet Security and I think this is one of the best. I Hope this review helps you solve your problem.

"Version 7 is still disappointing!!!", Zonealarm Security Suite is generally all around a decent program. It does have some faults.

Let me start by saying that if you are very naive or ignorant to computers, viruses, etc. or you are getting this for your grandparents, etc. I would suggest this program or Norton Internet Security Suite (always the latest version of course!) The Norton Internet Security Suite is a better choice over Zone Alarm.

Now for the rest of the population -
Zone Alarm FAILS to meet many of the top ratings requirements for Antivirus/Security programs such as -
1 - A Virus Bulletin rating VB100%, the highest honor for anti-virus software.
2 - Zone Alarm did not pass the ICSA 2005--a similar test that certifies the software can detect viruses, prevent virus replication, and doesn't generate false positives.
3 - I believe Zone Alarm is not W.C.L Level 1 & 2 Certified
The West Coast Labs Checkmark level 1 & 2 certifications are given to antivirus software that detects all current "in the wild" viruses, generates no false positives, prevents virus replication and disinfects all of the viruses that can be disinfected.

Now above and beyond all of those grievous issues, Zone Alarm is a really slow down on your system's startup time. By removing it and installing other options, many computers I have worked on were ready to go a full 1 minute and 25 seconds faster!!!!!!

When running P2P programs or many download accelerators, Zone Alarms VSMON service will lockup. This crashes the ZA security system. It continues to 'work' but I doubt the security level is solid. You must reboot, if you can. In many cases the computers lock up.

In many cases the program will go corrupt after downloading the very important Antivirus or Antispyware definitions. You have to either drill down through files to delete the corrupted ones or you may even have to uninstall, clear the registry, then reinstall the entire program. YIKES! That sounds like fun, huh? I have done it numerous times on numerous systems. Zone Alarm really treats its customers like guinea pigs. They let you do the testing and workout the problems. Many times they release patches way too early.

If you do not believe me, I invite you to go to the Zone Labs website, find your way through the support links to the User Forums. You will see many angry posts and complaints about these very subjects!

I recommend Norton Internet Security Suite for the beginner crowd. For most others I recommend separate programs. BitDefender 10 Standard. Just the Antivirus program. The BitDefender Suite is not very good. Also, Kaspersky's Antivirus solution is also excellent. Their security suite stinks too. Don't get it. For a firewall I highly recommend Agnitum's Outpost Firewall. It has excellent industry ratings and has strong, built in antispyware features that update daily.

You will not typically see BitDefender, Kapersky or Outpost reviewed or rated in the major magazines. A friend of mine works at a MAJOR PC magazine and he says it is mainly because Zone Alarm and others pay big bucks in advertising dollars. So they prefer to focus and give the attention and pass over the others.

The products I recommended are topnotch, solid security solutions. They offer 30 free trial periods. See for yourself!

"It was $10 when I bought it", The version that comes on the packaged CD runs fine. I had no trouble with installing, configuring, or booting up my Windows XP.

When version 6.5.xxxx came out, I downloaded the upgrade and installed that. Upon startup, Windows XP would sit on the "Welcome" screen for close to a minute before loading to the desktop. It doesn't happen with a "log out and log in" though.

To resolve this "Welcome" screen issue, I had to follow a workaround, whereby you do a clean uninstall by uninstalling, cleaning temporary files, and registry keys, install version 6.1.xxxx, followed by an upgrade install (not clean install) of 6.5.xxxx.

When 7.x.xxxx came out, I foolishly upgraded. It took over 15 minutes from when the "Welcome" screen shows up to when I could actually use the computer. The desktop would arrive after some delay, but you won't be able to click on anything for quite some time. I had to boot into safe mode and uninstall it.

I'm sticking with 6.5.xxx (with the workaround installation steps) until the license runs out, then I'm running back to McAfee. I'm just glad I only paid $10 for this thing.

As with any other software, it seems good enough to help prevent viruses, malware, etc for normal internet uses (shopping, viewing news, etc), but don't expect it to actually help with anything if you do get hit when someone starts downloading "free" stuff and installing garbage from sites with ads and what not.

Would have been 5 stars had the subsequent versions been stable and worked correctly. 1 star because I can't give it a 0, and because I can't turn off the reminder to upgrade to the latest version; I can only delay it by 60 days at a time.

Also, upon shut down (no matter which version), there's a Zone Alarm process that does not exit correctly, resulting in one of those "Program not responding" dialog boxes to show up for a few moments.

"Good Over All", I used to use McAfee for a long time and this is my first time using non McAfee. Soon I loved it; First it is packed with the most needed protection tools, secondly it is easy to use. But the most important change that I liked so far is Zonealarm takes far less resources from my computer compared to McAfee. Well done Zonealarm.....
