"spyware doctor is a quack", It used to work before version 5, but now kills my PC. My only option was to restore to an earlier date. A ".dll" file was then missing and it would not automatically run - thank goodness. Version five point whatever is worse than junk. I was able to 'fix' my PC by 'restore', and when I downloaded SD again, the same thing happened. I don't need to download it a third time to prove to myself that is the problem. It killed the PC speed to almost nothing each time it was re-installed.

"Spyware Doctor Ver. 5.5 a Disaster", I had used previous versions of Spyware Doctor for years without any major problems. I recently tried to install the 5.5 Upgrade and it resulted in a frozen screen, and hours of recovery efforts. You better know how to start your system in Safe Mode, and use Recovery Points when you try to install this mess. PC Tools does not respond to your service requests, and my Service Ticket has gone unanswered for a week. It's like there is nobody at PC Tools to help. My advice is to stay away from this giant fiasco caused by Spyware Doctor 5.5 unless you want to practice your system recovery skills.

"Version 5 unusable", As of March 25 I'm having the same experience as others here: SD does catch problems other scanners miss, and can successfully remove some infestations other products do not. However while Ver 4 worked properly, with the real-time protection enabled Ver 5 slowed all three of my fully patched XP SP2 systems to the point where they are unusable, then eventually freezes the system. My advice is that if you MUST use this product to removed a specific infection you enable it for that specific purpose than immediately disable it afterwards.



"DO NOT BUY SPYWARE DOCTOR", Do not buy this product!!!! It's a terrible product sold by an invisible company. You cannot contact them. They will not respond. It will freeze-up your computer. You cannot uninstall it. And the company will continue to charge our credit card. If you buy it, you'll be sorry and don't say that I didn't warn you!!!!

"Hidden Auto-Renew", Do not buy anything from PC Tools without understanding that there is a yearly auto renew included in the agreement. This web company just want to pick up your money. You should stay away from the PC Tools payment processor "Element 5" too.
This software is a bag of crabs, period. It slows your PC as you can't imagine and is impossible to completly remove without formating.
Again Stay away.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Great for spyware removal, POOR for system stability", I really wish I would have read the reviews on here first. I honestly never even though to check here.

I recently picked up a nastly little trojan on my laptop and decided I needed a new anti-virus/spyware program as McAfee didn't seem to be working too well anymore. After a quick search, Spyware Doctor 5 seemed to be a very viable option. I did the free scan and was quickly impressed that it picked up several issues I wasn't even aware of. So, I paid $60 for two licenses and the included antivirus.

Of the 9 issues it picked up, all but two were able to be completely wiped out. Sadly, the two that remain are my main problem and it's not doing my any good. The system guard feature works wonderfully, but it's amazingly invasive with the pop-ups on as one comes up every second due to one of the remaining issues trying to write to the registry. Adn there's not an ingore button for a certain pop up, you have to turn them ALL off. Which leaves you rooting through a seemingly endless history log in order to find something if you need to.

But, the biggest issue at hand, is the stability of the program and the amount of memory it uses. It was initially rather quick, but after no more than an hour had slowed my system down to a crawl. Reboots were taking almost 10 minutes for everything to load and function. Then, fast forward to this morning, and I can't even get on the internet.

So here I sit, a sheep among the masses with the same complaint about the program. Add in the "unadvertised" recurrent billing to the very poor stability of the program, and once I get home this evening I'll be asking PC Tools to give me their advertised "satisfaction guarantee refund" or I'll be filing a dispute with my credit card company. And I'm still left with this nastly little bug.

"Bad- Real Bad", Spyware Doctor is a total waste of money. System kept rebooting after download of software. No one to call (should have told us something right there and they won't return emails). Registry Mechanic and AVG Internet Security by the same folks. Save yourself time and money buy something, anything else. I am staying away from their other "AVG" ie.. Internet Security, products as well. They say good for 3 systems but don't bother trying to load. Besides throwing your system into the gutter you can't reinstall after you reload your operating system-don't care what the box says.

"An excellent product that saved my computer", Several weeks ago I had a nasty spyware infection that completely took over my Internet Explorer browser, my desktop, and my system tray. My browser was being continually redirected to a bogus anti-spyware site ("AntiSpyware Storm") and my system tray was popping up warnings with links to anti-spyware sites that were in fact malware. Spybot Search & Destroy (a well regarded freeware program) couldn't resolve the problem. Microsoft's own program, Windows Defender, couldn't even detect a problem. Nor could my fully updated Norton Antivirus 2007, which purports to afford anti-spyware protection. I downloaded Spyware Doctor 2007 using Mozilla Firefox (which was unaffected), ran it, and it returned my system and Internet Explorer browser completely to normal! I haven't had a spyware or adware issue since.

With regard to system resources, I recommend turning the "OnGuard" real-time protection OFF and simply running the "Intelli-Scan" feature (which only takes a couple of minutes) every few days or so. Both of these features can be accessed by right-clicking on the Spyware Doctor icon in the system tray. With OnGuard off, I don't have any speed issues on my computer which has 512 Mb of RAM.

"What Happened?", Without doubt Spyware Doctor v4 was the best anti-spyware product on the market. In my own tests it removed 7 out of 7 keyloggers, 19 out of 20 spyware products and every piece of adware.

On a clean system it prevented the installation of every piece of malware I throw at it, except one keylogger which it squawked about constantly.

Then for some inane reason PC Tools re-wrote their product from the ground up, because it's become all the rage to make all-in-one protection software.

The result is still a fine piece of software, but the nearly 100% faith I had has been shaken somewhat.

Spyware Sweeper is now an equivalent product, not a serious come down in quality, but basically it now misses probably around 5% of malware. So my confidence has fallen from 100% to 95%. Still massively better than the distinctly average Ad-Aware, or any of the free products.

The main critism I have is the product has slowed down tremendously. It was always a bit of a resource hog, and took forever to load initially, but the scanning around 160gig of data took about 10 minutes on my 32-bit Athlon based PC.

Now it takes around an hour on the same data. Admittedly this includes antivirus detection, but even the p**s poor Norton AV takes only 30 minutes in comparison.

So it seems PC Tools have some major work to do, to get back to the pinnacle of Anti-spyware protection. I would still recommend this over any free offering, and is probably as good as it's main competitors - but it's not so much better that it's worth $10 more.

"version 5 is a disaster", Over the weekend (9/15 AND 9/16 2007) I have had to uninstall this product from multiple systems. The phone never stopped ringing. Apparently they put out a disasterous release within the last week or so. Couldn't even turn the product off just had to uninstall.
