"Good Basic Graphing and Data Collection", InspireData is a data collection and graphing program from the same company that makes "Inspiration" and "Kidspiration." It was designed for use by teachers and students, grades 4-12, and is capable of producing stacked and line graphs in addition to pie graphs and Venn diagrams. Data is entered in a spreadsheet-like table. Switching from the table to graphing mode immediately puts data points on the screen. You can then customize the graph by clicking on the axis labels to choose which data field in the table is represented by each axis.
Other controls let you change the display size and the labeling of the data points, and there is a screen which allows you to change the shape and color of the data points. In addition, a number of custom shapes and icons can be chosen. The program can show mean, median, and a "line of best fit" for line graphs.
While the data points can be colored to suit the user, a graph's background color (white) and grid line color cannot be changed (at least I wasn't able to figure out how to do this).
Graphs can be printed directly or exported in a variety of formats. Each graph made can be saved and presented in a slide show within InspireData (slideshows cannot be directly exported to presentation programs such as PowerPoint or Keynote).
One nice feature is that data can be collected through survey forms on placed on local computers or through an "e-survey" uploaded to Inspiration's web site. Data can then be downloaded from the survey responses to the associated data table. Data can also be imported from Excel and other spreadsheets capable of saving in a tab delimited or comma delimited text format.
This software is great for introducing students to survey design, data collection, and graphing--easy to use and very forgiving of mistakes. It would probably be a good app for anyone wanting to do basic graphing and not requiring arcane chart types. Also, it's FUN watching those data points fly around the screen and regroup as you change the parameters of the graph! Inspiration offers a 30-day, full function demo for those interested.
