"Addition Improved", This is an improvement over the previous edition. Its speech recognition is much improved.
However I did use it to type this opinion and it first typed addition rather than edition. But maybe I just need another cup of morning coffee.

"What a great product", I am so impressed with the dragon software. Right out of the box, after a short time of going thru some examples I was able to use your product. I have had two throat operations and my voice is very deep and hoarse. Not an easy task to recognize my voice. Thank you for making such a wonderful product. I can write my book alot quicker now, The bonus is being able to dictate replies to my e-mail friends. It does not get any easier then this.

"Its like cheating at work", Don't think twice about purchasing this item. Just do it! I use it at work. It is like cheating, it is so easy. I am totally addicted. Even for writing this review I am using it. Setting it up is a no-brainer and using it is as natural as speaking. Now I'm driving everybody crazy with all my long e-mails :-). You can even command it to make a smiley face. Enjoy!

"NaturallySpeaking does more than expected", Alison, my wife, purchased this product for me from Amazon. Since I'm the person using it she asked me to write the review. She purchased the standard edition version 9.5 because we were not sure how well it would work. We were simply looking for something that would do voice to print, while my hands were recovering from injury. After the initial tutorial and voice check, which took about 15 minutes, I was able to fill in an e-mail, plus work in Word. After gaining confidence with that, I started studying the other lessons and realized that the software was very handy for working the desktop, filling out forms online, and even navigating webpages.
The only downside, if you want to call it that, is that you do need to pay attention to the fact that you are using it. It helps to think out your sentences before you speak them, and watch for words that begin or end with s. I have also found my answers to somebody in the room & a call-out to 1 of our cats, in the body of an e-mail that I was dictating. The software works almost flawlessly with Word and Web-Mail, formerly known as Outlook Express, but will sometimes not allow selections and corrections in certain website response boxes. If I know in advance that what I intend to write will be fairly long, and do not know if the box will allow me to use all of the features of the NaturallySpeaking, then I will do the work in Word then cut and paste it to the web. This is a minor inconvenience compared to typing out the entire response or comment using the eraser end of pencils held in my hands; which had previously been my only option.
After my wife saw how well the software worked, she purchased a copy of the NaturallySpeaking preferred edition version 9.5 for herself. Because she sometimes has trouble with her left hand, plus knowing how well the standard version worked she wanted to make use of some of the other options, as she does a lot of work on her computer. She ordered hers with the stereo headphones, as I had upgraded to stereo headphones due to enjoying music while I'm on the PC. If you don't listen to music while working on your computer then the standard single side headset will probably be fine for you.
In case you are wondering, yes, I did write this opinion using my NaturallySpeaking. I did have to make some corrections, as in a few instances I did not think my sentences through, then failed to properly enunciate what I did want to say. Another reason that you want to speak in complete sentences is that by following what you are saying, the software can decide which spelling of a particular word is needed, for example, it can choose, in the context of a sentence, whether you need thier, there or they're. While it may not be foolproof nor 100% perfect, it is one of the best pieces of software I've ever worked with and has been a tremendous help to me, even only having used it for about three weeks. By the way, you do not need to speak loudly for the software to work, a normal speaking voice or even lower, works just fine.

"dragon naturally speaking", I am very happy with this product. It takes some time to train it to one's voice, but it performs very well once the learning curve is over.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"good product, horrible customer support", This software works quite well once it's fully trained. However, if anything goes wrong, you might as well give up. Their "help" function is pitiful. Online tech support (by phone or email) costs $10 a pop. The online knowledge base was no help. The user's guide's "troubleshooting" entry says to look under "tips" on the website, but there is nothing labeled "tips" on the website, so...

Mine was working fine for a couple of months, but somehow my settings have become completely messed up, and I can't find any way to restore them. When it's working correctly, this is a pretty impressive program, but if something goes wrong, be prepared for an astoundingly frustrating experience. I'm honestly not sure I've ever encountered such poor tech support.

An update: I installed the upgrade from their website, and it does seem to have fixed the problem. And I emailed their customer service (not tech support) complaining about everything mentioned above; they did at least respond, and apparently if you have the latest version, you get one free tech support consult - which they don't mention anaywhere on the website.

My advice - this is good software, but be very careful about changing settings.

"Dragon Naturally Speaking Has Real Fire!!", Look, all it takes to tame the Dragon is a little time in training yourself by going through the tutorials and investing some practice time. I just don't get the weird negative reviews on this product. It DOES WORK ON LAPTOPS USING WINDOWS VISTA!!! I mean unless you have a lot of junk on your computer already, or are just a complete moron, I don't see why anyone would have trouble using this software. It is a little slower while working in MS WORD, but all I do is work in DRAGON PAD, and cut and paste my text work into MS WORD. It cuts down my time BIG TIME!! IT WORKS, AND WORKS WELL!!! I don't know about the support from Nuance, but so far, I haven't had the need to even contact them. With a little time and effort, you can become a DRAGON MASTER!!

"Windows Vista and/or Laptop Users, Be Forewarned...", According to the product specifications both on this page and the product box, this edition is compatible with the Windows Vista operating system. Actually, it's not. I learned, much to my chagrin, that it would be necessary for me to download an update from the Dragon website in order for the product to work. The download took almost two hours on a high-speed internet connection, as it's a huge file...essentially an updated version of the entire program.

I attempted to install this product on my brand new Dell laptop, which -- again, according to both this page and the product box -- had more than enough processing speed to do so. I kept receiving an error message, telling me that it was not adequate, and therefore the installation was aborted. I went to the Dragon website, only to find out that any kind of support -- even via email -- costs money. What a nice surprise!

Searching on Google, I found the source of my problem: I had to reconfigure my laptop's energy saving features so that the program would understand that there was enough processing speed in order to be installed. Once I did this, the program finally installed.

From start to finish, the entire installation took around 10 hours, and that included a trip to a local computer store to check out the laptop, to make sure that my processor was working properly. I still haven't gotten the program to work, as there are problems with the microphone that I haven't figured out yet.

It stands to reason that a very complex program such as this one is going to have a few bugs and problems. However, I've never had this many problems with any other software I've purchased, nor discovered to my chagrin that there is so little free support available for them. For those reasons, I cannot recommend this program for purchase.

"quick to start using", I have been using this software for couple of weeks now, and I only use it occasionally. I have found that it is very easy to set up and start using and seems to recognize most all words. The software is far superior to other voice recognition software that I've used in the past. If you're not used to dictating it does take some getting used to. This software works best when you speak in sentences rather than word by word. I think after using this software for a little longer it will recognize all the words that I say. And I will be used to working with it to. I am using it right now to dictate this review directly into the Amazon website. I found it will work everywhere that you can type into a page. The only reason I am giving this product. Four stars instead of five is because the earphone piece on the mic headset. I find very uncomfortable and I have not found a comfortable way to use it.

"Very good for carpal tunnel patients", I got this product for my wife to use at work until she has her carpal tunnel surgery. She reports it is relatively easy to learn to use, and a great saver of hand action, but it IS slower than typing. Nonetheless, it has enabled her to continue to work productively without pain, and she gives it four stars. (She isn't writing this because it is on her work computer, and this is from home!)
