What our customer's say!
"A thirteen year old Barbie lover's review", I absolutely LOVED this movie. It's the best Barbie's ever done. I am 13 and still LOVE Barbie! So what if it's animated? "Barbie" has been labelled as "baby" but it's not!
I love to dance, and this movie has seriously inspired me. I am constantly humming the songs and practicing their dances. Even my dad, who is a huge music person (he's the music director at our church, and is very talented at the piano) LOVED the music score.
The movie is centered around Genevieve, who is played by Barbie. She has a crush on the cobbler, Derek, who is in love with her as well. Genevieve and her 11 sisters are described as "rambunctious" and "wild." So their father askd his dead wife's cousin to come and instruct his daughters. The cousin, Duchess Rowena, has plans to kill the king and take over. She slowly poisons the king and forbids the girls to visit him. She also forbids them to sing, dance or do anything fun in an attempt to squash their spirit.
One night the girls stumble upon a magical land beneath their floor, and dance there all night until their shoes are worn out. On the third night, Derek follows them because he has found out Rowena's scheme. Rowena finds where the 12 girls have gone and traps everyone in their secret hideout while she gives their father the final (and fatal) dose of medicine. Genevieve and Derek must dance together in order to release everyone, and they use the girls' various talents to outwit Rowena and save their father. In the end, Lacy, who has always been the klutz and the runt, ultimately is the one who saves her father from death.
There is a scene towards the end where Derek and Genevieve fight enchanted suits of armor that threaten their lives. For me, it wasn't too action and danger- filled, because for one it's animation and two: Barbie never dies. But it could be a little startling for 2yo-5yos.
The dresses are (as always) gorgeous, but this time, they've outdone themselves. The girls are (in order from oldest to youngest): Ashlyn, Blair, Courtney, Delia, Edeline, Fallon, and Genevieve, (the oldest, more adult figures) Hadley and Isla, (twelve year old twins), and Janessa, Kathleen and Lacy. (five year old triplets). I like this because 1: I love the names! i.e: Blair, Fallon, Hadley, my faves, are ubusual and cool! 2: There's always little kellys or adult Barbies, but girls who are my age, and I like that.
Tis is a MUST BUY I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!!!! It's my most favorite movie in the entire world! Even my ten- year- old brother likes it. He loves "Felix", Derek's parrot, and "Brutus", Rowena's monkey.
I love this movie! Don't be folled by its "little girl" title. A must-see!
"A Great Story and a Visual Treat", I got this for my 7 year old daughter, who has most of the other Barbie animated movies. I watched it with her, and I enjoyed it just as much as she did. It has an excellent story, an excellent message, and wonderful visuals.
Although this film is now several years old, the animation is probably one of the best in the computer-animated Barbie movie series. The textures are finely detailed -- from the sets to the wardrobes to the faces. Movements and expressions are exceptionally fluid and extremely lifelike -- at times, you'll forget you're watching something computer animated. The dresses and skirts move in a natural fashion as the girls dance -- there is nothing stiff about this animation at all. It is a pleasure to watch.
The music is also very enjoyable, especially through a sound system. The classical music and original themes really add to the overall atmosphere of the production. The music is probably my favorite part of this film.
The characters are enjoyable -- you have your typical villain and sidekick, some comic animals, a prince, and the princesses. Voice acting is superb and believable. The story is written at a child's level, with enough sophistication for adults to enjoy.
"Even her brother enjoyed it!", My 3-year old daughter choose to rent Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses at our local video store this weekend. She does not have any Barbies, just has an interest in anything pink, princesses or ballerinas. Much to her twin brother's protest (and reassurance that he could play dinosaurs in the other room), we were able to start the movie. The colors and visual details of this movie are amazing. It is really enhanced by HDTV. The dancing is beautiful and the story is great, emphasizing that a girl should be herself and each person has something special to contribute to this world. Her mom (me), never having been a girly-girl and actually popped the head off her first and only Barbie, watched the entire movie alongside her, completely entranced. And wouldn't you know, her brother sat down about 5 minutes into it and watched intensely as well. He claims to just like the cat and the bird in the movie. After all, his dad told him that boys don't like princesses. "Princesses are for girls." HA! Santa will definately be purchasing this movie and possibly the first Barbie after viewing this.
"A Big Hit", My granddaughter was so excited to get this for her birthday from us. She loves the Dancing Princesses and age 4 and dances around the room while she's watching the show.
"Very cute and entertaining movie for little girls", What more do you need...it has Barbie, Ballet and a Prince. Little girls, including mine are captivated by this movie. It has all the attributes that young girls love! Great buy!

"My girls like it ", They have all the barbie movies and it gets them dancing which is very good. Would recommend.
"The best Barbie movie out there!", This movie has a wonderful story line. It is not musical like Princess and the Pauper or Island Princess, but it remains my daughters favorites. If you are wondering about Barbie movies and want to try one, I would start with this one. I like how Barbie is portrayed as the hero in all of the films. She uses her brain, good manners, and compassion to overcome challenges and is dressed modestly. I highly recommend all of them.
"Bright and fun", Never having seen a Barbie video, I was very skeptical at first but then was pleasantly suprised at the quality of the animation and the plot. The music which sounds familiar, I think is from Celine Dion and fits beautifully with the story. If you have LCD, the animation is crisp, clear and brightly colored. The scenery dazzles. With all the dancing scenes and a great plot...it makes for great entertainment for any barbie fan. Be warned if your little ones don't have Barbie dolls yet, you may find yourself shopping for one after this movie.
"Another great Barbie movie!", Hello, I'm StoryMaker. I'm not a real fan of Barbie, but her movies and software are awesome. My sister Russian Blue Witch (RBW) got Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses on DVD for Christmas. We watched it on New Year's Eve. It's another great Barbie movie! Like most other Barbie movies, it is based on a story or fairy tale, but very loosely. (Just look at Barbie as Rapunzel. The prince doesn't even climb her hair except in a dream!) Either way, they are very high-quality in graphics, plot, lessons - you name it!
In this movie, Barbie acts out Genivieve, just one among 12 princesses. They have a very fun time, but they are often noted to be very un-ladylike and noisy. Their father, the widowed king, loves them dearly, but is concerned about their un-princess-like reputations. Finally, the king gets his cousin, Duchess Rowena, to train them to have behavior that they'll need when they become queens. However, Rowena is very strict with the princesses. She is so harsh that they become nothing but miserable and learn nothing of value. But, on Lacey's birthday (the youngest princess, acted out by Kelly), they discover a secret their mother left them before she died and enter a magical world where they can dance and dance. But when the princesses discover that Rowena is trying to take over the kingdom and kill the king, they must take action. With the help of Eric the cobbler (played by Ken), they save the kingdom - and their father. They learn that with the power of family love, they can conquer tough obstacles, and that everyone makes a difference.
This is a really great movie. As I said, great plot, great graphics, great lessons, and also great songs. It's a tiny, teensy weensy, little bit on the girly side, but honestly, it's Barbie. In fact, for Barbie, it's not even THAT girly. One little problem: they've got a few animals in this movie, but unlike the animals in Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper, they don't really have their own world, purpose or really any merit. Mostly, they're just there to exist, practically. The only big thing with the animals is the evil monkey showing Rowena the entrance to the secret world. Other than that, they're practically decorations. It's far from a big problem, though, and it doesn't really harm the movie - there's just room for improvement.
This DVD also doesn't have many special features. All it has is a Shine music video & a memory game. The Shine music video is pretty good, and the memory game is OK - it just gets annoying & boring pretty easily. It also has english captions and french & spanish language options, but those are standard in DVDs. Oh, and, I almost forgot: it has trailers (a.k.a. commercials), but only, like, 2. If you can get it for cheaper on a VHS, go for it. You won't be missing much.
Pros (good points): This has a high quality plot. It teaches good lessons, and is a very good family movie. The graphics are fantastic & realistic. The music is also very good. It is full of family love as well. It is creative and, without a doubt, worth the money all the way.
Cons (bad points): This DVD is not perfect. As I said, the animals lack merit and have little purpose - they are, really, just there so they can be there. And, of course, it doesn't have many bonus features. It also makes Genivieve look like a star, and the characters are aware of it - despite there being not much purpose for her to be in the characters' world. Oh, and, this is totally lame, but I like looking at the little slips with advertisements for merchandice on them. But, for this one, it's mostly just toys, with only a few coloring/activity/story books. OK, Barbie IS a toy, but...
This is a good movie, and even though I didn't buy it (my sister got it as a gift, as I said), it's worth the money. A great family movie! Try out these other Barbie movies:
Barbie in the Nutcracker (Her first!) Barbie as Rapunzel (Interesting & nice) Barbie in Swan Lake (The villan's kinda overpowering, but still good) Barbie as the Princess & the Pauper (The animals have more merit here) Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (A nice movie)
And these Barbie CD-ROMs:
Barbie Pet Rescue (Gets boring eventually, but still fun. SUPER animal graphics!) Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride (Has good fun mini-games & it's fun to move around) Barbie Explorer (Sometimes annoying, but quite fun nonetheless) Barbie as the Princess & the Pauper (Pretty fun, but sometimes a few bugs) Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (Not perfect, but quite fun)
Overall, this is worth the money. It's a great family movie. Even Dad seemed to liked it! (Even though he got really technical about everything.) Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
