"MS Student 2007 not recommended", I am a secondary math teacher looking for software resources of which MS Student will not be included. I utilize other electronic curriculums and am familiar with (& own)other programs on the market for Algebra, and was very disappointed that Student 2007 contained very little actual text book source info, contrary to several reviews that deceived me. It is ok as a supplement to text books, particularly where a graphing calculator is used, but will not tutor students as claimed in a systematic fashion. Student 2007 disappoints me because it claims: "In one convenient package, Microsoft Student 2007 provides students with templates, organizational tools, tutorials, translator tools, and a just about everything else they'll need to finish -- and ace! -- their French homework, algebra exam and research papers." Wrong choice for algebra. Glad I only bought one copy for me.
"Great Educational Tool!!!", I've been using this product for awhile, and I'm delighted with it. I got my Algebra I Homework done in 1/5 the time it usually takes me! In addition to this, when I feel like learning, I watch some of the Discovery Channel videos that are included with this. Even better is that this product comes with a $[...], reducing its overall price to $[...]. Today I'm going to use it to help me write a five paragraph essay.
I love Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2007, and you will too! Buy it! Trust me, you WON'T be disappointed.
"Wonderful encyclopedia", I love Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2007 (boy is that a tounge roller!)! It's a serves as a great encyclopedia, and it's very useful. I don't however use the "Student" part so much. The Student Part, really just has to do with Office programs, and making nice charts, graphs, book reports, and stuff, and I don't usually do that. I've been using it since October 2006, and it comes in handy. I do like it's online feature, so that you can access quality Encarta info. from anyplace with internet connection (although you have to activate it yourself, by going to File > Encarta on the Web, which I would never have know of until I poked around) So it's neat to get good Encarta info. right from the web, which last only for a year. I like how the menu bar got less cluttered. It's relatively simple now. They display the content very well and organized. Overall it's good. But there are problems. Here's the basic pros and cons of it all.
Pros: - multimedia is awesome - content is displayed very nice - web feature is very handy anywhere - student tools are easy to use, and instructive - menu bar got less cluttered - Encarta Kids is actually great for kids - it's just really simple and nice
Cons: - No Automatic updates : I want it to update on it's own, without me having to press the update button - there really isn't usually a lot of info. on topics, like for example, if you look at the articles for Dragon in Encarta and Wikipedia, Encarta has 2 pictures, and 3 paragraphs, while Wikipedia has 8 pictures, and many paragraphs about it. Can't they do better? - takes while to install, and takes up a good amount of hard drive, although you can always just use it on the CD if you want to, but I prefer not having to drop in the CD everytime to use it.
That's really about it. I just wish Microsoft could have done more to it. Encarta has the potential being in every school around the country if there was a reason to do so. Like maybe you could read e-books in it, download skins & more from the Encarta site, be the basic things teachers and students could use at school if there was good reason to. Most of it sounds superficial, but I've got a lot of ideas how to make the future-gen Encarta to be the most ultimate learning thing in the world. I just at least hope in the next version, they provide more info. in their articles, along with more multimedia. I also want their to be skins that you could change, and that the articles could even be put in simpler use. I just want it to be better, and it really didn't fill my expectations like I thought it would, which is why I gave it 4 stars. I'm usually a big fan over Microsoft products (sorry Apple fans) but Encarta seems to disappoint me a bit. Overall though, it's really good, just not something you should completely think of spending your money on.
"Grandkids approval says it all....", I gave my grandson, ages 12 & 15, the Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium 2007 for Christmas. I thought it would be a wonderful aide in the subjects they were studing at school. However, my concern was..."Would it be difficult to navigate and not be used or would they even use it enough to discover all the benefits of the software?"
Well, they are raving about how great it has been in assisting them with their schoolwork...especially in Geometry and Algebra. Mom loves it too because the math help not only gives the answer but explains the steps on how to arrive at the answer.
For my book...money well spent. It is so hard to buy a gift for teenagers that they get excited about... especially one that pertains to schoolwork. I was well pleased with their excitement about the product. I was satisfied with how easy the program was to use.
Use the product once and you will find a live-in tutor.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"2007 product needs Office 2003 Standard, Pro or Student Version", I have owned Encarta, included in the product, for about four years, upgrading each year from the previous version. I love the product.
The new 2007 product is quite different in the GUI but the product is essentially the same: great.
However, here is the negative: you must have Microsoft Office 2003 installed to use the "Learning Essentials" Module that is an option buried within this program. If you do not have Office 2003, do not install Learning Essentials. Not knowing that you MUST have Office 2003 Student, Pro or Standard Edition (not Office 2003 XP version -- this version of Office 2003 won't work), I installed Learning Essentials. It hosed my Microsoft Word 2000. I could not open Word 2000 at all. After calling Microsoft "India" I was kindly told the above. When you read the fine print on the side of the box you see that they require Office 2003 to work all Student and Encarta components.
Unintalling "Learning Essentials" is/was not easy. My new laptop took over an hour to uninstall this included program. Apparently after you unintall Learning Essentials, Word 2000 will work again. Don't know yet as I am still waiting on the uninstall to complete....
Buy/install Office 2003 Standard, Pro or Student version before buying this product.
"Every student should have a copy", This product is a masterpiece. It's a testimony to early 21st century thinking about the world, the earth, learning, and software. It's a Swiss-Army knife of information with a kind of practical beauty that we associate with tools that work. Check out the map tool, and the view of the Earth at night. It's delight and a gift to an active mind.
Somebody has thought long and hard about what students need on their computer to succeed. What they've come up with is an awesome collection of innovative productivity tools for kids.
Take math. The math tool alone is worth the price of admission. This is where algebra class should start. Math lovers will eat it up. For the less than loving, Student includes really excellent tutorials on math concepts. It even links homework help for many of the major math books. You put in the textbook, the assignment, and it steps the student through the problems.
Homeschooling? Read no further. Just buy it.
Geography? The map tool, especially the statistical mapper lets you view the world from outer space, with or without political boundaries, and compares the performance of countries on a zillion measures. Literature? It's got summaries and readers guides for a huge list of required reading, and not just the stuffy Victorian novels, but Ursula LeGuin and even some titles that I didn't think were worth reading. The language tools -- you can hear a word pronounced in a surprising array of foreign languages, plus dictionaries and translators, and even plugins for MS Word that make it easy to write in French or Spanish. No more funny key combos to get a cedilla.
Plus Encarta encyclopedia -- which is safer and way more effective at leading kids to track down related ideas than a web search.
I'm sure I'm leaving something out.
The only problem is, it takes gigabytes of memory and really ought to be partnered with MS Office. That said, if you take education seriously, you ought to have this on your computer.
"Outstanding Set of Tools for Your Young Scholar", As parents of three children, the oldest of whom will start junior high school this school year, we fully acknowledged the fact that we were in need of a toolbox that would facilitate the arduous homework process. High-performing schools demand much from its students today, since the high school curriculum of yesteryear now rears its head much earlier in a competitive educational milieu. Thus, it was with great expectations that we purchased this product. We have not been disappointed.
The homework tools are excellent and user-friendly. The math tools (including the graphing calculator, the equation solver, and the triangle solver) alone are tremendous aides. Remember the old days of graphing linear equations by calculating the slope and plotting points? Well, this feature performs this function instantaneously, so when you want to show your child how the slope-intercept form of an equation works, you have the right tools at your disposal. Remember the old days of memorizing a litany of trigonometric functions, yet not truly understanding their significance? This tool makes such knowledge meaningful, in that it graphically demonstrates its utility.
The Premium Encarta content is, of course, indispensible. We have been Encarta users for quite some time now, and have used this resource for many a school project. This feature alone will save you countless hours of research. The other tools are equally worthwhile: the literature reviews, the foreign language tools, the project templates, the charts/graphs feature, and the college ancillary materials are all very useful. The games are replete with educational fun, and Encarta Kids is wonderful for the primary school child.
All in all, this is an exceptionally valuable toolbox that you will undoubtedly turn to time and time again. We have installed the full program onto our desktop and our laptop. This way, when research papers are assigned on a frequent basis (and we all know that's inevitable in today's competitive academic culture), you can find the answers right inside your office's desktop. Also, rather than taking your daughter's study group to the local library, she can walk a few houses down the block to her friend's home with her laptop chock full of data and resources, ready to be mined and explored.
"Good product, Better interface, can be used by 8 year olds", I purchased this product for the second time. I purchased the 2006 version initially for my son but, the 2007 version is much easier to use. The most notable improvement is the Kids page. I was evaluating purchasing a monthly subscription to Cosmeo, however, I thought I would give the 2007 version of MS student a try before I purchased a monthly subscription to a service that my son would possibly use and enjoy using. After he had used the program for at least two days, I asked him what did he like the most about the application.
His comments were as follows;
He likes the games that are available, though not very intuitive or challenging, however, they provide information about the subject/topic. It is a lot easier to get to the things that he would like to see (simpler, better interface). He can use the application while we are in the car and not have to worry about using the internet to access the application.
I must say that I like the latter feature since I was not persuaded to buy him a cellular wireless card to use when we travel. Overall, this is a better product than the 2006 version for many more reasons than those that I have listed. I personally have not used the product other than verifying that the product worked on his machine. However, I am sure there are many more features and benefits than those that I have listed. Also, to be fair, I have not used the Cosmeo product to compare the feature sets of the two applications. I can only say the Microsoft product will work standalone without requiring an internet connection all of the time. Also, to be fair the Microsoft product does require internet connectivity to retrieve content updates for Encarta. I chose to give the product 4 stars since I am sure there are some limitations to the product. I will leave the limitations of the product for someone else to find. Enjoy!!!
"Homework Made Fun", The previous versions of Encarta included a host of homework tools. Last year, these have been made into a separate product called Microsoft Student. It has now been gainfully repackaged and very much enhanced. Among the new or revamped features: free online access to MSN Encarta Premium, Step-by-Step Math Solutions calculator, Step-by-Step Math Textbook Solutions, Triangle Solver, Equations Library, tutorials, and foreign language help. MS Student comes replete with the entire Encarta Premium encyclopedia!
Homework assignments are the bane of most students I know (not to mention their hard-pressed and nescient parents). This is mainly because of the tedious and mind-numbing chores of data mining and composition. Additionally, as knowledge multiplies every 5-10 years, few parents and teachers are able to keep up.
Enter Microsoft Student 2007 - a productivity suite which, as we mentioned, includes the Encarta Encyclopedia, English and foreign language dictionaries, thesaurus, quotations library, assignment templates, tutorials, graphing calculator software and a Web Companion.
Similar to the Encarta, MS Student's Web Companion obtains search results from all the major search engines without launching any additional applications (like a browser). Content from both the Encyclopedia and the Web is presented side by side. This augmentation explicitly adopts the Internet and incorporates it as an important source of reference - as 80% of students have already done.
I am not sure how Microsoft solved the weighty and interesting issues of intellectual property that the Web Companion raises, though. Copyright-holders of Web content may feel that they have the right to be compensated by Microsoft for the use it makes of their wares in its commercial products.
MS Student would do well to also integrate with new desktop search tools from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and others. Students will benefit from seamless access to content from all over - their desktop, their encyclopedias, and the Web - using a single, intuitive interface.
MS Student's templates are actually clever adaptations of the popular Office suite of products - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. They help the student produce homework plans and schedules, projects, book reports, presentations, research reports, charts, and analyses of problems in math, physics, and chemistry. Detailed step-by-step tutorials, Quick Starters, and pop-up toolbars (menus) guide the student along the way in a friendly, non-intrusive manner.
The graphing calculator is a wonder. It has both 2-D and 3-D capabilities and makes use of the full screen. Aided by an extensive Equations Library, it does everything except cook: trigonometry, calculus, math, charting, geometry, physics, and chemistry. And everything in full color!
For the student keen on the liberal arts and the humanities, Student 2007 provides detailed Book Summaries of almost 1000 classic works. Besides plot synopses, the student gets acquainted with the author's life, themes and characters in the tomes, and ideas for book reports.
MS Student 2007 is a great contribution to learning. Inevitably, it has a few flaws and glitches.
Start with the price. As productivity suites go, it is reasonably priced had its target population been adult professional users. But, at $70-100, it is beyond the reach of most poor students and parents - its most immediate market niches.
MS Student 2007 makes use of Microsoft's .Net technology. As most home computers lack it, the installer insists on adding it to the anyhow bloated Windows Operating System. There is worse to come: the .Net version installed by MS Student 2007 is plagued with security holes and vulnerabilities. Users have to download service packs and patches from Windows Update if they do not wish to run the risk of having their computers compromised by hackers.
Fully installed on the hard disk, MS Student 2007 gobbles up less than its predecessors but still a whopping 4 Gb. That's a lot - even in an age of ever cheaper storage. Most homesteads still sport PCs with 20-40 Gb hard disks. This makes MS Student less suitable for installation on older PCs and on many laptops.
Finally, there is the question of personal creativity and originality. Luckily, MS Student does not spoon-feed its users. It does not substitute for thinking or for study. On the contrary, by providing structured stimuli, it encourages the student to express his or her ideas. It does not do the homework assignments for the student - it merely helps rid them of time-consuming and machine-like functions. And it opens up to both student and family the wonderful twin universes of knowledge: the Encarta and the Web. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".
