"Awesome!", I wasn't sure what to expect when I first got this program, but was pleasantly surprised by the detail in the soft ware. I'm not a pilot and enjoy the tutorials with interactive information. I still can't fly a helicopter! The minuses are types of aircraft available and texture of landscape, but these are easily remedied by free updates from their website and links to after market add-ons.
Warning!!! This program requires a lot of space and you may find yourself wanting to go and try the real thing!
I now have a greater appreciation for what aircrews go through to fly aircraft.

"Unprofessional", The graphics are average. The actual flying in unrealistic. No airplane that I have found in this program will capture the localizer or glideslope on an ILS flight. The switching back and forth between approach and center then back to approach and so on and so on is not how it happens in real life. Although this version boasts some new airplanes it took away a few of the good ones like the Cessna 182. This program needs some work from a real pilot and air traffic controller if it is ever to be realistic.

"Takes some tweaking but worth it", If you simply stick the DVDs in and go "click-click-click" you are going to hate this game. I have a very high-end machine and was getting frame rates as low as 1-2 fps! I was shocked!

However, if you scour the web for "FSX tweaks" and spend the time to carefully adjust the sliders and plow through the fsx.cfg file, you will end up with the greatest flight simulator there is! This is a game that needs lots and lots of help to draw out its greatness. Whenever I think about all the work I've had to do to get it to this point, I get really angry at MS for not doing a better job of customizing the software to your hardware (which they could easily do) automatically during installation instead of leaving all that up to us as the sim community. Still, when you finally get it right, the game is soooo sweet that it's pretty easy to get past the hassle.

I've had all the MSFS versions since 98 and this is the first one that I haven't felt the need to go out and download all sorts of third party stuff for. There is enough in the standard package (although I have bought Acceleration) to keep me enthused. The only exception to this is FSUIPC. As far as I'm concerned, FSUIPC4, by Pete Dowson, is a must. I have always complained that the FS flight models just do not feel right. There is a sluggishness to the controls and the planes just do not fly stable somehow (at least that's been my experience). FSUIPC really improves the flight characteristics of the airplane. I finally decided to spring for purchasing FSUIPC4 and set up all my controls to work through it rather than the game itself. In fact, I just went to the game settings panel and disabled all joystick input! The results are wonderful! I can now trim my aircraft precisely and the flight is rock solid.

With the release of SP2 (you get SP2 if you install Acceleration), frame rates got better and the game behaves better in general. SP2 is also a must.

Here is what I like about FSX:

The graphics are fantastic. The terrain looks almost photographic and the cockpit and general aircraft graphics are just wonderful.

The virtual (3-D) cockpit has arrived. I never used it in FS9 but now I very rarely pop up the 2-D pit as I can see so clearly and have no problems clicking the hotspots on the VC.

ATC is greatly improved over FS9. ATC would get so annoying in FS9 that I got to where I didn't even want to fool with it. No so in FSX. You no longer get stupid commands from controllers and things are much more realistic in that regard.

I absolutely love the missions. Now, you can fly through hoops, do rescue missions where stuff is blowing up all around you, interact with your "co-pilot" and change the object of the mission in mid flight, etc. I'm still having a ball going through the missions and purchasing the Acceleration pack was largely so I could get some more missions.

The selection of aircraft is very adequate in FSX. The helicopters are actually flyable (for the first time) in FSX. I have really gotten hooked on the missions where you fly one of the choppers. I suppose FSUIPC has a lot to do with how much more reasonable it is to fly these things now.

The viewing system has been improved and is quite reasonable. If you use TrackIR, you will be very pleased with how natural it feels with this game.

Weather, much better autogen objects, more accurate airports, etc. are all huge improvements over what's come before. This is really a great simulation.

Here's what I don't like about FSX:

I've already griped about FSX's inability to sense your hardware and set reasonable defaults. That's just pathetic in my view.

It is inexcusable that FSUIPC has to exist. No offense to Pete Dowson and his really great product. It's just that MS should provide this as part of the game. I would be embarrassed to know that there was a guy making a living "fixing" the basic flight characteristics of my flight simulator! This is fundamental. It is a FLIGHT simulator after all.

I'm not a big fan of Rod Machado and all his silliness. Ok, that's a personal thing I know but I just can't deal with trying to go through these otherwise useful training missions because of all his ridiculous comments. Enough on that. Hopefully you will like Rod and appreciate his "humor" more than I do. In fairness, I have gone through all the training missions and they are actually quite good.

So, in summary, this is really a great flight simulator but requires extensive research and configuration to get it to where it's playable. If not for that, this would be a five star product.

"Initial thoughts and system comments - good", It's been years since I've messed with flight simulators and I recently built a new fast system and was in search of a game to 'show off' my new hardware. A guy at work mentioned FSX and said it would probably run well on my machine which has an Intel Dual Core E8400 (3GHz), 4GB DDR2 RAM and a 4 disk 0+1 RAID system.

I installed the DVD tonight and played for about 20 minutes. The installation took about 15 minutes. During gameplay, one core was pegged and the other wasn't doing much. Details looked really good.

I then downloaded SP1 and installed it. CPU usage went down (it seems) so I decided to move ALL the detail sliders to the right (thinking this would really bog down my system). They managed to use multiple cores and my system was now using nearly 100% CPU and the details were incredible! I was highly impressed!! I've been playing for a couple hours now, and it's time to get to sleep so I can go to work tomorrow, but this flight sim is awesome!! I'm buying the acceleration pack...(hope it goes as well as this did)



"It's still easier to fly a real airplane...", Since weather does not permit, FSX is a great substitute, though it's still easier to fly the real thing. FSX installed into Vista HP without tweaks,setting resolutions and mapping switches on the Logitech E3DPro joystick without problems. Rod Machado's flight lessons and the Missions are great! Since I've flown actual training in the Reno-Tahoe area, the soaring tutorial mission at Minden was outstanding, except that I couldn't get breakast at the cafe. The additional $ for the deluxe edition is worthwhile, and even at low-res, I have been able to recognize the terrain features from earlier travels through the real landscapes. Dell Inspiron 1501, AMD Turion 64x2 TL56, 2GB RAM with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. The money I saved over the Saitek X52 and pedals is going toward avgas. (Flour bombing seems easier from an actual airplane, too;>) I'm still working at it, which explains why only four stars on the fun; training is fun, but also a lot of work.

"Flight Simulator Deluxe X", Excellent gaming program. Exceptional graphics, sound and overall performance. This program really brings flight simulation to life. Definetly recommend for anyone wanting to get away and enjoy peace and solitude. I have had all flight simulator thus so far but this one beats them all.

"Greatest Flight Simulator To Date", I've been buying the Flight Simulator series since it first came out. I'm amazed at how the graphics matured since then. From my IBM PCjr to my BYO (Build Your Own) monster.

Out of the box this is probably the slowest game ever to install. I think it took a little less than a half hour. After installation it started up immediately and I was going through the tutorials (missions) and have absolutely no problems what-so-ever. The graphics are crisp and tweaking the settings, I'm getting pretty good framerates since I noticed that after installation it put me down as low on all settings. I was figuring that it did that with what my system has. Cranking it up to the "very high" settings, my system is handling it with ease. No coughs or hickups! The landscape, clouds, airports and everything else look amazing.

Flight Simulator does a magnificient job in recreating aircraft to fly, from a glider to a helicopter. There are so many options to tweak, anyone from a novice to an expert in flying will enjoy this chapter in the flight simulator series. Out of all the Flight Simulators, this one I can say that I can takeoff and land with ease; although it did take some practice. The tutorials are simple to understand and the quick reference guide in the box is a perfect addition to have near your keyboard. When I feel comfortable enough I plan on taking on a commerical airlines job within the game. Like I said this game is amazing. This is the first in the Flight Simulator series that I can actually land, takeoff, and fly a leveled flight with ease. The Air Traffic Control aspect of the game is a little confusing. All in all, this is a terrific simulator of flying many types of aircraft and for those of us who are always fascinated with airports and wondering what it would be like to be a commerical airline pilot. I've yet to run a New York to Orlando and New York to Aruba flight, but I will soon. The only knock on this game is the Air Traffic Control. You can actually communicate with the ATC when getting permission to land or takeoff. It's like a multiple choice test where you have choices. For example 1. Runway 4L, 2. Runway 2R, 3. Runway 15R. You can request fuel and at what gate to taxi to. There are a lot of choices and it can easily be little overwhelming but reading the help articles, running the tutorial, and taking "flight lessons", is beginning to make it more clear. It just takes some time.
Please remember that the $200-$1200 computers you see in the stores will have difficulty in "playing" this game and get decient framerates. Don't be frightened however. You can build one yourself or have someone build one for you that can easily handle this game and not break your budget. Im running this game on an IntelCore2Duo E6300, 2 Western Digital SATA II 250GB harddrives, Soundblaster X-FI (2.1 speakers/subwoofer) Extreme Music edition, Saphire x1900xtx, 2GB Corsair XMS2 ddr2-675 RAM, G5 Logitech Mouse, G15 Logitech gaming keyboard, Lite-ON x16 Duel Layered DVD-ROM R-RW w/ lightscribe, and Windows XP Service Pack 2 OS.

"Very good, but it's a computer hog", This product is extremely well designed...almost. I live in New York City, and EVERYTHING is exactly the way it should be (that is, the skyscrapers in Manhattan, etc. Not the houses, though.) There were even some factory pipes letting out smoke. Kennedy Airport (KJFK) looks exactly like it does in real life. My only complaint, however, is that the Statue of Liberty looks like a man.

The plane models are extremely realistic. Flying in a B737-800 are the other models provided were like the real thing. You could even turn the fasten seatbelts and no smoking signs on.

Microsoft (surprisingly) also allows you to add your own things too. You can add in your own planes, scenery, missions, etcetera. You can even replace the fictional airlines with real ones. If you download 'World of AI,' some packages for it, and go to Kennedy Airport, it will be bustling with JetBlue, Delta, Lufthanasa, FedEx, etc.

However, for all these great graphics, you do pay a price (besides the $50 dollars). I have a Dell XPS 410 with a Intel Viiv (dual core) running at 2.13 GHZ each with 2G of RAM. I also have an Nvidea Gforce 7900 GS. I can achieve about 25 FPS Max. Usually <15. The game runs pretty well, with a few glitches, however. Sometimes it'll freeze and start up again, and others it'll completely freeze. When I once went into taskmanager to end it, it had taken 512,000K Mem up.

Although FSX has these shortcomings, I strongly recommend it to anyone who has considered it.

"review", Very impressive tool but extremely demanding of computer resources. Also, far fewer GA aircraft models from the major manufacturers than I would have expected - too much emphasis on turbine aircraft.

"FLIGHT SIMULATOR X", I am very disappointed with Microsoft - I loaded the Flight Simulator and the programme crashed and told me to re-install it.
When I tried, I continuously got an error message concerning msi installer that was present on the ROM.
I contacted Microsoft support and they eventually said they would investigate furthur - that was over 10 days ago and I have not heard a thing since.
If you can help me with this, I would appreciate it.
