"Very challenging, but refreshing."
It's nice to finally (haha) have Final Fantasy III in English. It is clear that the focus of this game was to try something new with the series, Square tends to experiment every now and then before they drop a truly amazing Final Fantasy title (VIII and IX before X, and XII before the forthcoming XIII). This was the first FF with a custom job system. The job system is ok, but most of the job classes are pretty pointless until the end of the game (Scholar??? come on!). The story is pretty standard, and really seems a bit too close to the original FF, but it's not bad. Graphically, this is one of the most stunning games on the DS. The character models are all the same, but with different faces and outfits, a definite gripe of mine especially since they all look like weeble-wobbles. The music is right on par with the rest of the series, and the story has quite a twist at the end and really becomes interesting. The battle system is just fine, this was the last FF without the Active Battle System, so you can really think about your strategy for each round without getting bombarded with attacks. That being said, this game is menacingly difficult. It's not really the number of random encounters or the difficulty of them, it's the lack of save points within dungeons. If you get all the way through a dungeon and lose to the boss...you will have to start all over again. I would advise anyone to do some mindless leveling up before you go to any new dungeons, especially toward the end of the game. All in all, I enjoyed this game, it's a solid RPG. People that aren't big fans of the series will probably be very frustrated with this game, but it's worth the struggle in the end.

""We are the Cloud of Darkness...""
This game was okay. I thought that this game would be great. Nope, it wasn't. It's not bad, but it's not good.

Okay, here's the good stuff. It has ONE beautiful FMV that is incredible on the DS screen. The battle system, which is still turn-based, is as good as always, and this is the last title except for X to use the turn-based system. Also, it reincorporates the use of the Crystals, the most known theme of Final Fantasy. The music is still good, though not as good as the previous installments.

Now for the bad. The storyline is much less in-depth than II was, when it should be more. The characters (Luneth, Arc, Refia, and Ingus) do not compel as much as Firion, Maria, Guy, and Leon did (although they did not compel too much, either). Their stories are weak.

When you actually play, you regularly go to dungeons and caves (another recurring theme of Final Fantasy). These dungeons are usually time-consuming and difficult. When you finally get to the boss, he/she can attack two to three times per turn and really thrash you to a Game Over, meaning a wasted hour of gameplay. Also, Phoenix Downs can only be found in certain areas and cannot be purchased, leaving you with precious few chances to revive KO'd characters. However, if you a player who enjoys a good challenge (like me) you will like this game. It is simply frustrating, that's all.

However, this comes to me as an okay game and the graphics (except for the FMV) suck. So, don't expect a treat, but don't expect a bomb. It is just average.

"FF fanboy"
I love final fantasy, so I can't hate it. Being objective though, this is a great portable fantasy whch makes me want to remake of four even more.

"Possibly the worst in the Final Fantasy series, although not necessarily a bad game."
This game confuses me. Its got a lot of potential for a great game, but it just doesn't come through. I tried really hard to like this game, it is Final Fantasy. I guess there had to be at least one disappointing game in the series. The sound effects are pretty decent, its typically what you would expect from a Final Fantasy game. The graphics are pretty good for a hand held game, and vastly improved from the original. It has some added cut scenes which are alright I guess. The combat is really boring and unbalanced. Granted, i usually love turn based combat, but this was just terrible. The difficulty curve is idiotic. You have to use potions to just to survive in the beginning area. Then, they tell you to go somewhere you figure that means you should be strong enough to handle. Well that's really not the case in this game. They tell me to go to the castle, so I go to the castle. I run into some creatures and try to fight them but low and behold they one shot me and all my party members! I was really looking forward to playing this game, and it had all the basics of what I expect from a Final Fantasy game, but it fell flat on its face after that.

"Final Fantasy III"
a good fun game overall, slow at the begining and difficult to accomplish begging tasks, but very fun.

What our customer's say!

"New twist on an old classic", Not near the greatness of FFVII but a quirky runner-up to say the least. Innovative gameplay with the DS stylus is easy and addictive. Would've liked a little more action along the storyline but overall a fantastic addition to the Final Fantasy catalog. Worth buying for sure.

"updated but still feel dated", If I have not played any other FF from IV and on, maybe I would find this game to be a great game, but since I did, FFIII really doesn't measure up to the later FF games, story-wise or gameplay-wise.

There is no doubt the remake is beautiful graphically. The characters and world is modeled in 3D but it's basically still a 3D game, so that's good. There are plenty of jobs classes the characters can assume, so there is definitely replay value to this game. But those are about the only good things.

The story is ok, albeit unimaginative, but the main problem is that it's just too short, and what makes it worse is how late the final set of classes become available. Because the final set appears so late, players pretty much having to run around fighting random battles to grind up the job levels for the new jobs before moving on, because there's not much to move on to. I thing this is something a remake should fix, by introducing more hidden dungeons with more equipments after the final jobs are selectable. Sadly, there's nothing much left to do (even less if you don't have WiFi). And speaking of equipments, the selection is painfully little. The joy of getting new equipments to try on is virtually non-existent for some of the classes.

Besides the short story, I also found that certain old-school aspects of the game made it more annoying and painful-if-your-party-is-wiped-out than difficult, like having to go thru long dungeons without save points, short supply of phoenix downs, and no tent.

I think this is still a good game, but I just feel that it's a bit TOO old-school for its own good. Check it out if you want to play every version of FF there is, but if you want a epic RPG experience then this is not it.

"this game is awsome!!!!", This game has a very good story, cool items, and realy cool spells. The battles could be a little more interactive and in cut scenes I think the characters should talk like in F.F. IV, but other than that its awsome. The only thing I don't like is that when a character dies after you fall off the the dragons mountain you have to waste your phoenix down.

"Definitely worth while", Personally, I liked the game. The story, graphics, music, and job system intrigued me. I enjoyed not being restrained to stay with one job however it was obviously unbalanced. Nonetheless, I loved playing my Dragoon but I must say that this game is EXTREMELY hard. Like, 'pull your hair out' hard. There are times where you'll even wipe on trash or "lose" because your whole team got petrified. That was really frustrating. The dungeons don't take a long time though and I found myself addicted. ^_^ Love it overall.

"Great Fun!", I played the original FF3 for the nintendo (the one that wasn't really released in the US) and enjoyed it then. When this came out for the DS, I couldn't resist giving it a try. It's far superior to the old version in graphic quality and ease of play, but keeps most things the same. There are some minor differences that other reviewers have noted, but as I play through, it brings back vague memories from my childhood of the first time I played through the game.
I would recommend this to anyone who played through the old FF games, or for kids (at least old enough to be able to read well) who enjoy good, long games.

"When will we get a true port of FF III?!", I felt I needed to rate this game due to poor porting.

-->First mistake, porting the only Final Fantasy game that was never released here in the states on a handheld instead of a main console.
-->Second mistake, completely overhauling everything. Simply up the graphics to SNES standards. It's originally a NES game. It's not truly a classic port if things are changed to much. No need for 3D grpahics or extra quests and dungeons if the original didn't have them.
-->Thirdly, Final Fantasy I & II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII were all released on the playstation. Why wasn't Final Fantasy III?

All in all, I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this one. If they would just properly port it to the PS or Nintendo Wii without changing anything except maybe bringing the 2D graphics to SNES quality. Or simply use 256 colors instead of 16.

Special Note: I would actually like to see them port Final Fantasy I thru Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest onto the Nintendo Wii :)

"Great Remake of a classic Final Fantasy RPG", Pros- Great graphics, and great new feature of using the stylus for playing and going through your menus. I've had it for several weeks and it has been fun. I enjoy it alot. Battles are pretty quick and easy to control with the DS stylus feature.
Cons- Leveling up is a bit slow and can get boring and tedious. Story line can leave you not completely sure where to go next.

Overall I think it is a must have for any FF RPG fan.

"The missing link", It's finally here! The final fantasy game everyone thought they had played is here for the first time since its first appearance in Japan. Many final fantasy gamers will instantly think of the characters Terra and Kefka. This is the real FF III never released in the us Terra and Kefka are from FF VI. FF III introduces the job system which lets you change your characters costume and abilities. Some of the most recognizable ones are Black mage, white mage,
thief, and warrior. It also allows you to chat with freinds via WIFI using mognet. Moogles of course run mognet and you can send "e-mails" to other FF III players as well as npcs ( non player controlled characters ). Over all this game is worth the money and time you put into it but if you get frustrated with the puzzles don't give up to easily just keep working at it. :0 : ) =D

"Final Fantasy takes a spin on the DS", Ok, so if you are any kind of an RPG fan you've played Final Fantasy at some point. And up until now, you had no options on the DS unless you picked up the ones for the Game Boy Advance.

Square Enix decided to bring FFIII (you may know this from the SNES but that is called FFVI here in the US), which was never released on any system previously, as the first DS entry. So how does it fair? Let's take a look:

Presentation: 8/10
The game is fairly straightforward but can get downright frustrating at times (forget to talk to 1 person, your forward progress will be stopped in its tracks). The menus are user friendly and the additional perks you can use through multiple DS's via the mail system definitely helps this game's cause.

Graphics: 8/10
Make no mistake, this game looks great on the DS, probably one of the best ones. The cinema's are quite amazing for a small system. Lots of detail in the towns and dungeons. Especially creepy (at first) is when you cross into the dark world with your airship the first time. Square (as with most FF's) has done a great job with the look of the game.

Sound: 8.5/10
Not as great a score as came with, say, FFVII, but when I have tunes from the game stuck in my head it means either I played it too much or they were really good. Keep in mind the DS speakers don't do any sound justice so if you have a great pair of headphones that will definitely help the experience out.

Gameplay: 9.5/10
Now this is where this game kicks some serious butt. The Job system in FFIII is awesome. Want 4 black mages? You got it. 4 warriors? Ditto. You get the selection of the original FF but the ability to have several different jobs leveled up on the 4 main characters. This adds pretty much an endless amount of ways to complete the main quest.

Now, why doesn't this get a 10 out of 10? Well let's put it this way: If you are used to be coddled in other FF's (FF II for the SNES comes to mind) you are going to be in for a shock in this one. Go off on your own early on (even later on) and prepare for a quick Game Over. I saw more game overs in the first 2 hours I played this FF as I did in all of FFVII and FFIX put together. To put it mildly: You better level up or get smoked. Often.

Replay Value: 6/10 (9/10 if your friends have game/DS)
Hardcore FF's and RPG'ers will want to try many different job combinations and Low Level games to see how many different ways you can win. But for most 1 time through will be enough. The mail system will allow you to open weapons, spells, etc. that are not available to a single player/game and offers a better incentive then most games like this.

Overall: 8.5/10
This is definitely one of the best RPG's you have for the DS. Rumor has it that they are doing at FFVI remake (FFIII for you SNES types) that will be on the DS. If that is the case you might just see that become the best one as it is rumored to have extras on it not available with the GBA or the SNES.

If you are FF fan, this is a must play. If you are an RPG fan, check it out. But be prepared to be taken to school if you think you are going to just rush through this one. Old school to be sure!

"Good Fun, Tedious at Times", This is Final Fantasy III, the sequel to Final Fantasy II in Japan. It is not Final Fantasy III as released on the Super Nintendo in the US.

I found the story line engaging, but the job system was a bit frustrating. At times level grinding is necessary. Overall, a good addition to the library of DS RPGs.
