Others say...
"Good, but hard" The initial missions are prettty hard, but once you get past them, they are pretty fun. Shatner's narration is a nice touch. It's good that they included all trek eras and numerous ships from each era. The controls take some getting used to but they work well once you do. Traveling through rings and warp conduits sucks. I found the Romulan ships the toughest. Each ship has its own different feel. Unfortunately though, many missions are tedious rather than challenging. But overall, the game is enjoyable and worthwhile.
"Star Trek Encounters OK" Star Trek Encounters game was fun to play since it also had two-player capability. I did not like the fact I could not save at key points but it did let you go back if you lost. OK not the best but more fun in two-player mode.
"The worst Star Trek game created to date" So I owned this game for a few days and I returned it to the store because I disliked it so much. The in-game play is terrible and it does not give you the feel of controlling the ship and the challenges is too hard to complete and Star Trek 25th Anniversary (1980)-ISH was a better game than this one.
"User inface causes great pain" I played this game for a few hours and the awkward controls sent me to bed that night with a numb arm and outrageous pain in my shoulder. I thought maybe it was something else, and tried again.... This game looks nice, but is actually a Klingon Pain Stick cleverly disguised as a video game.
I had no choice but to stop playing and throw it away. It was either that or end up in doctor's office. REALLY too bad, I was very, very much looking forward to a good Star Trek based PS2 game but sadly this was not it.
"Star Trek Naval Fun" Single player isn't fun. Very little fighting and a lot of ship following. What does make this game worth while is the multiplayer modes. Whether against friends or computeres, if you want a starship slug fest its worth the 20. There is also a code to unlock all ships, which was a life saver because I did not want to work my way through the single player to unlock them all.

What our customer's say!
"'Conquest', with an inferior interface", Want a starship combat game with decent player interface and strategic element for your Playstation 2/3?
Well don't look here, as 'Encounters' is merely a dress rehearsal for 'Conquest'. 'Star Trek: Conquest' features much of the same arcade-style action, but without the silly 'player qualifying'. I paid my $8 to blast the bad guys, not fly through hoops.
Bottom line: Skip 'Encounters' in favor of 'Conquest'
"Encounters", Star Trek Encounters I didn't get a chance to play it much but it seems challenging enough and the shipping didn't take to long
"Sweet!", This game has so many good things going for it. One of my favorite is the two dimensional three dimensions. Rather than making the game three dimensional where it is hard to orient oneself on a small screen they made the game two dimensional but with three planes. So while there are still three dimensions you get the ease of use of two dimensions! I would recommend this one much more than it's upgrade Star Trek: Conquest since it has more ships and has creative challenges.
"Controls a bit tricky", I like that the game includes all the incarnations of the Star Trek series and it is fun to play, but the controls seemed a bit complicated. I felt like I needed two extra fingers on each hand in order to lock weapons onto a target while running the engines and flying the ship. The overly complicated controls make it harder to progress and unlock my favorite Star Trek series.
"entertained my 6yo for a few days", Way better than Star Trek Invasion, but I found it repetitive and weapons and control were goofy. Good for kids though, with lots of different ship types in it.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Cheap game but good reason for that", This game is cheap so you can't expect anything too flashy. The ship you control is very small and controls are not intuitive. Can be fun in skirmish mode but if you do the missions its a bit of a chore. There is a stupid section at the start where you fly through rings which is almost impossible. Overall not recommended.
"Somewhat Entertaining", I read some of the reviews and agree that the music could have been better. Some of the levels are extremely difficult (in my opinion). But they are doable.
"Game didn't work well", The game froze up all the time. All of my other games on PS2 work just fine.
"bad game, wait for the next star trek game", Many review sites rate this game as a "licensed failure". That is my opinion as well. The game fails at so many levels, it is not worth the bandwidth wasted to attempt to even somewhat glorify this game as fun. The gameplay itself is either very boring or extreamly frustrating. With the horrible ship navigation you would think they would stick to one-plane navigation. You will get carpal tunnel from all the buttons you have to hold down and the fact the some objects are either above or below you ship to give some 3D depth to the game, doesn't work because of the horible control scheme. I got to the third episode and am sick of it already. It is hard to destroy 20 ships coming at you from all angles and aiming with the right analog and steering with the left analog. Then you have to cycle weapons with the x button and fire with R1. If a ship is above or below you you have to hold L1 to go higher or l2 to go lower. But the cruisers seem to roam whereever they feel like and you have to attempt to fire while they still on your 3D plane. Annoying at best. Game is worth about $2.50 and that is only for the 2 player skirmish mode.
"Trekkie Fan", This game reminds me a lot of the old arcade games I use too play when I was 10 year old (back in the 80's) it's reminds me of good old Asteroid Game from back then. Except the ship & stars are better looking in this game and you have William Shattner telling you the story before you began.
But basically same concept you fly through space blowing up other ships and flying around asteroids. It is not a hard game at all, just takes time to get the controls down. Hint when you have to guard a space station lay all your mines down & move off screen and they will wipe out half your enemies and you'll finish the level more quickly.
This game would have been more fun; when you increase your engine speed kirk would say "I need more powers Scotty" but it doesn't there is No talking during the game just the same SONG over and over and it's not even the star trek theme song so my best tip turn off the volume. It is a very basic game, even boring at some times doing levels over and over to beat the clock, but if you're a star trek fan (and an old arcade player from the 80's) I think you'll enjoy this game for the price!!
