"Plays AVI files"
I had been looking for a player that would play my AVI files. I found this, and not only will it play the AVI videos I've burned to DVD but it will also play them from a USB stick. I love this!

My only caveat is you have to use short file names to be able to read the files. Which means I either don't know the order of the video's I'm watching or I have to re-burn everything to short file names. I'm willing to put up with this, cuz hey I CAN watch them.

The only other thing I wasn't ecstatic about is the remote, very small button. It could have been designed better.

"OK, but limited USB Hard-disc support."
I was influenced by the USB connection in buying this player, thinking I could connect my USB hard-disk with downloaded divx video files.

Unfortunately, this player does not support the NTFS file system, only FAT16 and FaT32. Also, it only plays wma, mp3, and jpeg files and not mpeg. In short, the USB thing is just a gimmick.

"HDDVD EXCELLENT BUY"
This Philips DVD player with HDMI is an excellent buy. It is thin, light, and works like it should. I use it with a HDTV with excellent results. I would definately buy this product again.

"Great little player, however be aware that it won't work with NTFS formatted hard drives"
I purchased this player mainly to play divx/xvid files on a portal hard drive without having to burn DVDs. It will recognize a USB flash drive without a problem, however if you plug in most portable hard drives it will not work. Portable hard drives are often formatted in NTFS format. For example I have an 800 gig hard drive I tried to use initially and it would not open it.

I had to reformat the drive to FAT32 to use it with this DVD player. The downside of this is now only 250 gigs of my 800 gig hard drive are viewable.

Still, it works for me as a "poor mans" media center. It would be nicer to have an xbox 360 to play the files via the network.

"Things are seldom what they seem"
We purchased this set to go with a DVI TV. Bought the unit and an HDMI to DVI cord. When I received them and read the literature I became concerened and called Philips. According to their aupport people, once the DVI cable is plugged in, the audio R/L RCA plugs are turned off and you can't get any sound out of them. Philips site and the literature both say that the HDMI is 100% compatible with DVI but this person told me that was not true. I didn't bother to try and hook it up that way and maybe the person at Philips was incorrect. However, from there things took a step for the worse,

Just before I was about to return the cable and DVP, we decided to buy a LCD HDMI capable TV. Plugged the unit in and it worked fine, for about 2 weeks, whereupon it decided that it didn't want to play any more DVD's. I tried everything from brand new DVD's to ones that had just been played on an extremely cheap player. It wouldn't play anything. I called Philips and they said to power the unit down and then turn it on again, I did so. Not, not only will it not play a DVD any more, it wouldn't produce a HDMI signal to my LCD (i was able to get it to work with component cables accept it only played for a short period of time before freezing up again). I purchased this item based on all the favorable reviews, the upscaling feature, and the fact that it was supposed to be fully cdompatible with DVI. I am returning this product to Amazon and will look for something else.

What our customer's say!

"Decent DVD Player", Works well, only complaint is that it takes forever to open the DVD bay sometimes.

"Amazing", This item is great. I do not see a difference in upscaling, but this unit plays every format imaginable. Highly recommend it. You can learn more about it on forums, just google the model number.

"Excellent Quality and worth the price", I have used the Philips DVP5960 DVD Player for the past month and I am very happy with the product so far. The 1080i upscaling really does improve the picture quality. I have heard that this video quality is comparable to Blue-ray. The USB port is a great feature and is easy to use. I agree with all of the positive comments that previous reviewers have provided. The price is fair and worth the money. My previous DVD player was a cheaper Sylvania model and it only lasted a couple years. I would recommend this Philips DVD player to a friend.

"Extremely pleased...", I am extremely pleased with this product because of the size, and price. The functions it carries out is awesome. This is not a waste of money, and very little money at that! I do have one question though, is there any player out there that can carry out the same functions as DVD ROM...meaning, playing any video file possible. It's amazing the punch that this little device packs and I recommend to anyone who doesn't wanna have to spend hours burning an .AVI file to DVD just to play in your DVD player. On average I was able to to burn 6 high quality (.AVI/DivX) movies on one standard, single layer DVD for playback on this device. For times you may be in a hurry and don't have the time to burn a file to disc, you can just transfer to a flash drive, plug it right in, and play! This thing is awesome!

"Works fine but the DVP5990 is a better choice", This unit generally works fine but the slower USB 1.0 support sometimes produces jerky movement. DVP5990 is a better choice. It is an updated version with better menus and USB 2.0 support. The faster USB avoids the occasional jerky movement

Read this reviews before You buy...

"crappy stuff", this dvd player though seems good from the looks of it and features is crappy as it comes. it does not recognize my external HDD (seagate maxtor) . the remote is really poor, no eject button! the damn player hangs when its not able to read a dvd and i have to plug out the thing to get it restarter.. all in all total waste of money

"Excellent Product", Great Price!!! Great Picture!!! Great sound!!! USB port!!!
It's not a Blue-ray quality of course but you are paying less than $80.
The best: The USB port. I plugged in my external hard drive with tons of music, TV series, Music Videos and it works perfect!!!

"Most reliable brand on the market", I've owned a number of PHILLIPS brand DVD units over the years, only upgrading to get new features. They play almost every disk imaginable, have a streamline design, and except for a bit of a learning curve with the remotes, are very easy to use.

The DVP5960 is my latest addition, purchased for the novelty of playing high-quality MP4 videos on an SD card reader through the USB port. This is remarkable, and the remote even works to start, stop, pause movies, and navigate the SD card.

Others have attested to the quality of the HDMI, I've not yet graduated to HD viewing, I'm usually pretty happy if I can just see and hear the picture.

Anyone in the market to replace their DVD unit would find terrific quality, versatility and value in the DVP5960.

"Failed right out of the box", I was excited to find a refurbished model at a good price (from Amazon's Warehouse Deals).

But it wasn't refurbished enough, apparently.

Right out of the box, it failed to play even brand-new DVDs, displaying messages like "Root" and "Stop," or freezing after playing just a few seconds of the lead track or menu page.

In the first of two phone calls to Philips, I reached a person who held out the possibility of a "rapid exchange" (they'd send me a replacement and I'd then send back the defective unit), but only if I first faxed over registration info. I did that, called back the next day and was told I'd have to return the unit at my expense and wait. (So I'm not a fan of Philips customer service at this point. Too bad, because I liked the USB input feature -- which DID seem to work, although the interface was clunky.)

I chose instead to return the unit to Amazon, at no additional charge to me. But I still need a DVD player.

"must have", Excellent product for price and quality! Installation was very easy. I do not use the usb yet, but dvd&divX are playing very good.
