Others say...

"I would give it a ZERO!!!"
Horrible, horrible, horrible!

Nuance? More like Nuisance! Basically, you get the privilege of paying almost $200 and get no customer support at all, unless you like paying $$$ to send an email. Yeah, not even a real live person!

I have a consulting business for small business networks. I have had to install this program over 50 times in 6 months. Never, under any circumstances, did this install correctly, work well or not cause headaches. Worst of all, my clients blame me for a product I have known to be GARBAGE since version 8. I have tried under Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista. BAD! BAD! BAD!

It does not even offer automatic updates. You have to painstakingly comb the website, log in with an account, download it yourself and install it. And that is if you are lucky enough to get an update to resolve the problem! A year later and some of my clients are still SUFFERING crashes and random lock ups!!!!

Sadly, Nuance does not have to get off of it's lazy bottom and make a better product because there is NO COMPETITION! I would say that if you are serious about scanning for PHOTO work, check out Vue Scan. If you are serious about business scanning, you would be better off getting a small biz solution from Fuji, Canon, Xerox or Kyocera. Their small biz models have custom and FULLY SUPPORTED scanning software that blows Paperport away!

Do your research, make sure the product is compatible with your situation and hardware and finally, make sure the software is NOT Paperport!

"I was suspicious, but this version really is great..."
I am a longtime Paperport user who clung to version 9 after a horrible experience with version 10 (see my review of that disaster) and after reading all the negative reviews of version 11. Then we hired a new IT consultant and he asked me why I was still using version 9. I told him and he said his firm had been using and recommending version 11 for a year with no problems.

So, with great trepidation, I took the leap about six months ago and I'm very pleased with the program and the new features. I completely agree with Quantumgravity's 5/3/07 review. Since I bashed version 10, I thought it only fair that I set the record straight on this version.

"Wish I could give a ZERO- BUYER BEWARE"
If only I could get the hours I spent, trying to resolve all the issues that came up with this software. This is a VERY poor product. I am a small business owner and this software program has been very costly from downtime. I spent two weeks of computer tech hell. The only way I was finally able to clear all the problems this software caused was to reformat my computer.(by the way my computer is only 3 month old and I still run on xp) I can not believe that they can sell this software with so may bugs and get away with it.

I can not express how bad this problems is. If you want to lose hours of your life and be stuck in some bizarre tech staff hell than this is the product for you!!

"Not ready for Vista"
I have used Paperport for many years and have been very happy with the product. Paperport 11 is not, however, ready for Vista. You will first need to stop over a dozen services and processes working in the background to get this product installed on a Vista system. When you have finally accomplished this feat, you may or may not have all of the functions promised. While I had used Paperport on an XP system at least a few times a week, I found that I avoided using it on my Vista system. It was just too problematic with functions that used to work before just not there. I decided to uninstall the program and that's when the real problems started. The uninstall process corrupted the operating sytem. It took me many hours to retrieve my data and reinstall everything. Be careful. If you choose to try this product out, make sure you have good restore points and good backups.

"Do not upgrade if you have version 9"
I had version 9 which I found stable and very helpful. I fell for Nuance claims Paperport 11 Professional had better indexing and other better features. Very big mistake. This is awful awful software. The indexing doesn't work, what others say about it crashing constantly is correct. The PDFs created somehow are hard to read. This software is a joke. No patches on the horizon. It must be because of Nuance buying the software. If you have a Pre-Nuance version 9, by all means stick with that. The people who wrote reviews praising this software must be out of their minds.

What our customer's say!

"Shameful failure to fix bugs", I've been using PaperPort 11 Pro for two years. It presents a good way to scan, file and organize printed documents. I love the utility it offers.

Unfortunately, the program has critical, fatal bugs. If there were another product that does what PP does, I'd dump this dog and buy it immediately. (Hear that, software developers out there?) Nuance has done nothing to fix the bugs, nor has it offered any updates. Instead, I get regular pop-up "notices" about "updates" and "new features"... that are nothing but ads for other products. Gimme a break.

Key problems: Manipulating large documents results in program crashes. Scanning documents frequently results in program crashes. Adding annotations results in frequent program crashes. Scanning documents results in program crashes. The "sticky note" feature doesn't work. When you attach a note to a page, you can't edit or read the note past the first line.

Related problems: Nuance's web site offers no support or help on any of these issues. I'm not going to pay to get help with critical and fatal bugs. Nuance should just fix them. Nuance couldn't care less about its customers. I give them a big raspberry and will never buy another Nuance product. My problems have cost them many customers because I share my frustrations with others.

A friend of mine used to work for the company. He tells me that since it was sold, all programming for products is done overseas. There is no support of products, no maintenance, no bug fixes. You buy it, it's yours "as is", lotsa luck.

It's really too bad. This product is a great concept, and the bugs are fixable. I will eventually dump the program altogether and kludge together my own way to file and organize pdf's. I will probably buy Acrobat's PDF system, pay more, get something that actually works when I need it.

And that's the reason not to buy this software: It will leave you stranded in the middle of an important project.

"Didn't work, didn't start, nada", I installed the "free 15 day trial" version of PP Pro 11 from a website download. The install was slow but successful.

Something did start - an indexing program appeared on my system tray. My first ditch to drive into was to tell it to index the PDF files on My Documents. It indexed every single file there.

Next, I clicked on the friendly "paperport" shortcut on my desktop. Nothing happened. I rebooted. Clicked on the not-so-friendly-now shortcut, again. Nothing happened, again.

Found out I would have to pay $9.95 to report this problem via email.

My next stop was the uninstaller and a visit to Nuance's website to cancel the "free trial" which would have cost me $199.99 in 15 days.

Whew! Close one, Eddie. Such bogus stuff. How did they get to version 11.0? Do they multiple their internal alpha releases by 10 and start from there?

"Stay far far away", I have been a Paperport user for many years. Version 11 is full of bugs, frequently hangs running under Vista, and there is noooooooo help from Tech Support unless you are willing to part with $9.95 per call. Emails to Tech Support are answered with stock replies, if at all. Save yourself a lot of frustration, don't buy or upgrade to Version 11 if you running Vista.

"They ruined an otherwise good program.", We used PaperPort in our network since version 8.0, and we currently use PaperPort version 10.0 (Professional). Although speed has always been an issue, I would have previously recommended PaperPort as long as you had a computer with good processing speed (Note: we have a peer-to-peer Wundows XP Professional network)

After installing version 11.0 (Professional) I would STRONGLY suggest that you look elsewhere if you plan to use this product in a networked workgroup (peer-to-peer). Although they did improve the speed of the program in some areas, it now takes two minutes to save a scanned PDF file to a network folder! In PaperPort 10, it happened almost instantly.

I called PaperPort technical support and got some patch files, but they were of no help. When I called back the second time, technical support was out of ideas and my only alternative now is to return the product.

Once again, avoid this product if you plan to save pdf files in network folders. I have no idea what they did, but it's a shame how they ruined this product.

"I am stupid", My only conclusion, after reading numerous reviews, mostly negative, and purchasing this software (as an upgrade) anyway, is that I must be totally stupid. I suppose I was overly optimistic - version 8 worked pretty well, this had to be an improvement, right? Wrong. This is a totally unreliable piece of software. Despite installations on three different machines with different scanner configurations, the software crashes, freezes up, and/or suddenly rejects the scanner at some arbitrary point during scanning. There should be a law against marketing this kind of stuff and making the kind of promises Nuance does. Criminal!

"Excellent, but must update to 11.1!! Its not an auto update", This is excellent scanning software. The issue that everyone has is that they are probably using 11.0 instead of 11.1. It is a free upgrade, but you have to go to the nuance site to the "downloads" section and download the latest version for VISTA. It is designed for XP as well, but you have to download the VISTA version. This makes a world of difference with the program, night and day! I have no idea why Nuance doesn't put this as an auto update. Once you update it, the programs runs twice as fast, and I have never had it crash on me. Hope this helps.

"Tech Support, Customer Service-Terrible", BEWARE-Tech Support is expensive. Their online "knowledge" base has not answered any question so far. Must pay to email a question. Poorly documented and poorly designed program (from a users perspective). I am guessing it is well designed from a corporate perspective, design badly and then charge for help to figure out how to use it. A good scam if you can run it. The idea of paperport is good but the implementation is flawed. Decent tech support would go a long way, but as it is, look at alternatives. I wish a good company would buy the software and do something with it.

"I Should Have Known Better", I have never ever written a review before about software. I do read them - often before buying. I saw the comments about problems with paperport and thought, gosh, can it really be that bad, after all this is a big company that's been around for a long time.

Paperport would not work at install - had to call support to walk me thru a bug they KNEW existed - why not fix it or at least post it on the web site as a must do upgrade.

Paperport has crashed, locked up, stopped working with the scanner at least 15 times in less than 24 hours. I have not used CTR ALT DEL like this since I had an IBM 360 in 1996.

Last straw (why was I trying so hard to make this work.. ?) was when my good quality xerox scanner jammed on a staple I hadn't taken out, paperport stalled "scanner error" froze up. Restarted and now paperport won't scan at all. Turn off, reboot, power off scanner, etc. Same problem.

Life is too short. Paperport is in the trash can and I'm going to try another solution. Lesson - I won't discount what I read here in the future.

"Not even worth one star", I have purchased PaperPort on Windows since version 10. Version 11 is probably the single most unreliable software product that I have ever paid for and used. Crashes are common and occur when performing the most basic tasks. If there is anything that I can count on with PaperPort 11 is that it will hang. This is true counter-productivity software. Their tech support charges $9.95 to report any incidents. This only reduces customer feedback about their software bugs. Fortunately, only few companies show such lack of appreciation for their customer base, and when they do, it often heralds their demise.

"PaperPort 11 Pro great product", All the great features are here in PaperPort 11 Pro. It is easy to use and provides faster access to important documents. The communicate in color with 8x smaller PDF files feature is a must have.
