"Great Basic Labeler, But Power Hungry"
The "Brother PT-80 P-touch Electronic Labeling System " is a very inexpensive and easy to use labeler. We bought this when it was in the "Lightning Deals", so got it for a very a good price indeed.

Pros:
Solid construction
Easy to use
Easy to get consumables (label cartridges)

Cons:
Eats batteries
No AC adapter

Over all, highly recommend for household/light usage.

"great gift"
we have just loved having this for scrapbooking and also for putting our names in all our summer reading.

"Easy to Use"
This product is very easy to use. You can set up and start using even without looking at the directions. I did have to read the directions for the meaning of some of the buttons. You can adjust height, width and add symbols, etc. I have been wanting a labeler for awhile and read that this one was easy, cheap and recommended. That did it for me.

I have to say as some others have, it does go through batteries. It takes four AAA batteries and after 15 labels that I printed all at one time, it needed new batteries. I'm going to invest in some rechargable ones for this since I already have a charger for them anyway.

This is perfect to label DVDs, file folders and we are building a new house and for awhile at least I'm going to label the light switches so I will know what turns what on. The uses are limitless.

edit: After my labeler said it needed new batteries, I kept using it anyway and have printed dozens more. I am going to keep printing till it stops working. It still tells me that it needs batteries but keeps on working. I think it must be sensitive to the weakness of the batteries but is still enough to work. And I still love my labeler.

"I want to give it 5 stars... but I can't!"
I love this item--it is quick, easy to use and inexpensive. It makes beautiful labels as well which are incredibly useful. The issue has been that it gobbles batteries at an alarming rate! When I read the reviews, I figured I wouldn't be using it *that* much and that the folks who mentioned battery life were probably using it a lot more than I would. Well, I use it pretty darn sparingly (I think I've printed 20 labels total) and, I kid you not, I've been through 8 triple A batteries in owning it for 3 months or so! Not only does that make it expensive, it makes it a pain because you have to keep buying batteries (or invest in rechargeables which are not cheap). Why? All because it DOES NOT have an AC adapter port! If it had such a port, even if it didn't come with an adapter, I would rate it 5 stars. As it is, you have a great device with a serious power issue. 3 stars is the best I can do. If you are using this at home, get one of the other models with an adapter---this way the only consumable is the tape.

"Fast shipping"
Great product. The only thing is that I cannot change the language. Maybe defective. Still need to check.

What our customer's say!

"no battery problems here", I have owned this labeler for a couple of years and use it at school to label my student's instrument lockers. I rarely have had to change the batteries, although I think having to use 3 batteries in a machine like this is a bit much. It has been a terrific little labeler! the tapes are way too expensive, but they do offer nice color combinations.

"A good deal", This is a nice printer. I've been thinking of getting one to organize my carton boxes, but didn't because I knew the replacement tapes were expensive. [...], I just couldn't resist anymore.

I just got it, and could print a label immediately within 5 minutes after unwrapping the box (probably with 3 minutes looking for 4 AAA batteries). I didn't even need to look at the manual to print my first label. And of course with the easy-to-follow manual, I know I can use different styles, size, borders for the labels.

The printing is so quiet and the outcome is just so neat. Believe it or not, my last labeler was a DYMO 20 years ago.

This is just a great deal!

"Eats Batteries - get one with a power cord", I wanted to reiterate that this thing *EATS* batteries. I thought I could combat this flaw with rechargeable batteries, but in the end it didn't work out. You end up getting stuck with a dead device while you wait for 6 hours for your batteries to recharge (Rechargeable batteries still loose their charge when they are not being used). I'm not saying you can't manage your battery usage and make this device work for you, but I will say that I don't have the time to worry if the batteries in my labeler are up to the task.

Eventually I had an engineering buddy solder a power cord to the device so I wouldn't have to worry about the batteries anymore. Yes it's a hack, but it was cheaper than buying another labeler. If you're already looking to buy a $20/30 dollar labeler, I'd recommend getting one with an optional power cord.

"cheap up front, expensive in the long run", I bought this labeling device to organize my laboratory, because it was on sale, inexpensive, and looked straightforward to use. I've since had to buy 15 refill label tape cartridges which have wound up costing me an additional >$225. The machine has an enticingly low price; the company makes up the difference with the expensive tape. Also, the machine automatically puts a buffer of ~1/2 inch of tape on either side of each label that you print, which means that you are automatically wasting a ton of tape for each label - I haven't found any way to change the default settings so that I use less tape per label.

Like other customers, I've encountered the short battery life problem. However, this is less of an issue for me because I have just dedicated four rechargeables to the task of running the Brother.

In summary, I would love to give this device a higher rating because of its ease of use. But if you plan to do a lot of labeling, I think that in the long run you might find a cheaper solution if you buy a more expensive labeler at the outset - one that charges less for replacement tape cartridges.

"Nice little labeler", Nothing fancy, but it seems to work really well thus far. I haven't tried doing anything extraordinary with it, but it does create nice little labels. =:)

"Perfect Little Labeler", I dont use this Labeler for anything too sophisticated, If all you need is something labeled, short, simple, to the point this will do it. I use it to label various small items with my name, and to label little drawer organizers, and file labels. There are some symbols I wish it had that it doesnt, but they are pretty uncommon anyway and nothing a little abbreviating cant solve. It might do some extra stuff, I dont know but ive had it for quite awhile now and it is great, its very durable, the labels are easy to find, and if you ask me, the price is very reasonable (on amazon.com.

"Good basic labeller", I found it to be very simple to use and it creates nice-looking labels. The only downside is that it does seem to go through batteries fairly quickly, but I use rechargeable batteries so it's not too bad.

"Battery Issue", I see now that other people have had this same issue. $29 is a good price until you have to figure in $5 every other month for batteries. I use the PT-80 to make 5-10 labels a month and I continue to get the battery message. The PT-80 actually stops printing and feeding even though the measured voltage on the 1.5vdc batteries is 1.52-1.54vdc. Brand new batteries, they measure 1.59vdc, still get the battery message after printing 5 tapes.

"Easy to use!", I use this regularly in my business. It's very easy to use and I like the quality of the labels.

"Great product", This portable label maker is easy to use and works great. The only feature I don't love is the slot designed to help removing the paper backing on the label. It doesn't help much at all. Otherwise, this product is great.
