"...Something Dark Is Coming." Battlestar Galactica Season 2 Soundtrack - Bear McCreary.
My Review:
After the recent success of the show, Bear McCreary is making himself a household name, with more than one trick up his sleeve to get you into the swing of his matured and very prominently made tunes. He continues the sweeping multi-faceted talent of Richard Gibbs, who's music provided the style and overall ostentatious feel to the series. Bear McCreary gets really into it, adding and mixing constantly what feels right at that right moment, intricacies levelled throughout the entire album, adding true emotion, you may never catch the deepness of these songs the first time and they only get better with time; with clever cross-cut shots to coincide with his musical taste, drama and real build-up of tension unlike most shows these days.
The reason having the title of this review named 'Something Dark Is Coming' is because something dark looms on a precipice at the end of this season's finale. This song in particular stands out like the many others, all of which relax are carefully interwoven with the gorgeous cinematography of the shows excellence. High quality music, for high quality scenes and show. Some great tracks include, 'A Promise To Return)', the considered flawless 'Prelude To War', the incandescent `Allegro', `Baltar's Dream'. The 80's become almost reminiscent in this album, with tracks like `Gina's Escape' and `Something Dark Is Coming' reminding you of an 80's year type soundtrack you grew up on.
Verdict:
Some shows get it right, this happens to be one of them. The composer knows what he is doing and he will do more with it in time. This is but a glimpse of the extraordinary talent of Bear McCreary. 9.5/10.
"I love Bear's music" I'm so glad that they have continued to use Bear McCreary as the composer for this series soundtrack. His music is amazing, especially his use of other languages and musical styles.
"An amazing soundtrack to one of television's best shows" This is most definitely one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Bear McCreary goes above and beyond anything I'd expect from a television soundtrack (even for such a fantastic show). Every piece is unique and there is nothing to skip here. Nothing. The music is atmospheric, sometimes ethereal (Lords of Kobol, main title), other times simply beautiful (Roslin and Adama, Reuniting the Fleet) and other times epic and grand feeling (Prelude to War, Colonial Anthem). His use of percussion is a major highlight of this soundtrack, as it is for seasons 1 and 3 (particularly 3- which I highly recommend as well). In my opinion this soundtrack is the best of the three, although they're all good.
My personal favorite pieces: "Something Dark is Coming" -my absolute favorite, from the finale "Lay Down your Burdens." A very slow, sad and beautiful piece that builds gradually towards a powerful ending. Great percussion. "Martial Law" -incredible, mournful-sounding piece with more great percussion. "Lords of Kobol" -very different, almost like a contemporary soft-rock song. I don't remember this from the show, but I like it (didn't at first- it grew on me). "Roslin and Adama" -just beautiful "Gina Escapes" -a really unique piece with a great ending. I wish it was longer. "Prelude to War" Amazing, epic piece from the outstanding Pegasus/ Resurrection Ship 3-parter. The percussion in this is phenomenal (The Space channel used it in their "Razor" broadcast) "One year Later" -like Gina Escapes, a completely unique theme, (never heard again) that I wish was longer. Really lovely piece.
As I said before, there is nothing on this soundtrack that I ever feel like skipping. Every piece is top-notch. The above are just the pieces that I have found myself playing over and over on repeat because they're really just that good.
"Battlestar Galactica: Season Two CD" I Loved the series This CD is great as background music or cranked up
"A Perfect Companion" The soundtrack to Battlestar Galactica Season 2 is one of the better television/movie soundtracks of recent years. Throughout the album you can hear the storylines and arcs of season 2 with the use of musical hooks and themes. While almost all the songs are good some of the stand-out tracks are A Promise To Return, Something Dark Is Coming, Roslin And Adama and Prelude To War. Roslin And Adama is by far my favourite piece, if annoyingly short. Its uplifting refrain is hard pressed to top. All in all a good buy for its emotional pieces as well as its status as companion to the series.

What our customer's say!
"A "must have" for your collection. ", I am so in love with the Galactica series, and this cd (+ the seasons one and three) makes it possible to see the episodes when you close your eyes and just listen. Bear McReary has truly managed to find the atmosphere for everything that takes place on the battlestar and its surroundings. So if you are a fan you should really add this to your collection.Amazon.com Exclusive: Battlestar Galactica Franchise Collection (Season One | Season 2.0 | Season 2.5 | Season 3.0 | BSG Razor)
"The best of the bunch", This soundtrack is in my opinion the most varied and engrossing of all the BSG discs. Not to say the others are bad of course!
The following tracks make it worth the price alone;
Roslin and Adama Something Dark is Coming Black Market Pegasus The Cylon Prisoner Prelude to War
I strongly recommend this. Any movie/TV score lover can't go wrong with this.
"Bear McCreary is amazing!", This is my favorite BSG soundtrack, particularly "Prelude to War" (#17). The orchestration varieties and emotionalism of the music continue to be quite powerful (and entertaining) and make the music strong enough to stand on its own without even needing to be attached to the show.
"BSG music #2", Great having the music, such haunting music. It makes my wife and I "see" the show in our minds. Also we can just listen to Mr McCreary's music and hear each note and melody. Great addition to the having the BSG DVD's. Good job Bear!
"battlestar galactica season 2 soundtrack review", I'd have to say, as far as soundtracks go, Bear M. knows his stuff. You get a kind of walk through in the c.d. sleave, Bear tells you a little about each piece listed on the c.d. and its background, and more importantly the feelings of the characters that each piece was composed for. All in all, i give it an "A+". And a "Well done Sir!" If you are a true fan of this show, this c.d. is a must have!

"A New Standard for Scoring", When Ronald D. Moore and company set out to redefine the Sci-Fi drama with their incarnation of Battlestar Galactica, they realized at the very beginning the grandious orchestal scores typical of space genre pieces had to go.
Young composer Bear McCreary was choosen to score the ground-breaking series that has been called the best show on television by numerous critics. McCreary helps set that standard with his dark tones and fierce percussion statements. The depth or emotion present in his scores are the highlights of this re-imagined series and accent the incredible drama perfectly.
Give this score a listen and you'll agree, I'd have it no other way. It's frakking delicious.
"A must for any good music fan!", I enjoy great science fiction. Battlestar Galactica is in my top five sci-fi shows ever and the music for the series is unbelievable! Its great for listening to whenever I need to get away from the day-to-day grind and want to invision myself flying a viper through space. Music that moves you, that invokes imagery, feelings of action, romance, desperation and hope.
"Missing piece", Before I start I would like to say that I am very impressed with this soundtrack. This caliber of music not normally indicative of soundtrack music. This soundtrack is in a class all by itself. I think Mr. McCreary is going to have a hard surpassing this effort in seasons three and four. The other night when I was re-watching the second season for the zillionth time I noticed there was a musical piece missing from the soundtrack. I am referring to the musical piece when Admiral Cain emerges from the Raptor upon arriving a board the Galactica for the first time is not included on the CD. I'm wondering why? There were a couple other music pieces I noticed were not included on the soundtrack that were in the show. Maybe there will be another season two CD cut at a later date that includes these missing pieces. One can only hope. Make no mistake, this sound track is truely one of the finest ever composed; I guess that is why it was nominated for soundtrack of the year.
"Brilliant, Glorius, Splendid, Magnificent!!!", Do yourself a favor, order this soundtrack. Battlestar Galatica, the series, needs to be discovered by EVERYONE. It is expertly crafted, lovingly handled, by everyone involved. What really makes this series SHINE is the music. Put this soundtrack on and let your mind wander the inner reaches of outer space! It is a wonder! Gentle rifting melodies, strings that will make your heart soar, punctuated by perfectly placed drumming beats... I think that Bear McCreary has lifted TV soundtracks to a wholely different level. I am enchanted, forever... THANK YOU!
"Great Album, even for nonfans!", This is a great album of music from one of the greatest scifi series ever. I've shared it with family and friends, who loved it, even those who normally don't enjoy orchestral music. The earthly nature of the music reflects more of a humanity than any of the pompous trumpet-driven garbage of other scifi series. Basically, its as great as the show, hands down.
